What Ireland's history of resistance says about Palestine | Richard Boyd Barett | The Big Picture S2

  • Ireland’s fight for independence from British rule has defined how it sees itself in the world - as a liberated people compelled to fight against oppression everywhere.
    This sentiment formed its proud stance of ‘neutrality’, which saw it refuse to engage in World War II, and defines its strong and vocal support for the fight against Apartheid - first in South Africa, and today in Palestine.
    But under pressure from NATO to join the fight against Russia, is that ‘neutrality’ under threat?
    This week on The Big Picture podcast, we sit down with Irish lawmaker and anti-war activist Richard Boyd Barrett to talk about why Irish people feel compelled to support the Palestinian struggle, and how Ireland can lead the world away from warring empires.

      Palestine has never been “free” of Jews.
      Local Arabs lived peacefully before 1948 without their own state, they were so content they never asked for one before…. and when the United Nations offered them their own state in 1948 they said "NO" preferring to drive the Jews into the sea. Borders change.

      He is an idiot that can't even tell when Palestine ever came to existence. He does not even know there was no country called Palestine ever in history and that this is a false islamic movement to try to destroy the Jewish nation. There were 6 nations that attack Israel when they came back for the 3rd time in history, none of those islamic nations was the fake Palestine nation because it never existed! They are ARABS from Egypt and Jordan, Arafat, an Egyptian was the first self-proclaimed Palestinian in history, before him, the only Palestinians were Jews after the Romans branded Judea as Syria Palestina. Dear Catrina, the similarities are wonderful indeed! My surname is associated with the word Mehr which means love and kindness, It also refers to a messenger who after some time, became a god in myths coming to Europe as Mythra, associated with the Sun! or Apollo in some places which is related to Abraham in the Semite culture! The event of Yalda, which we Iranians celebrate on the longest night of the year, the last day of autumn, is believed to be a celebration of light winning against darkness! This Mythric celebration came to be Christmas when "Merry Christmas" is the sentence commonly used!@@catrinamcdermott4211

    Although he doesn't mention it, the struggle for Irish freedom at the turn of the 19th century was closely studied by other such movements-notably in China (Mao studied Michael Collins and the guerrilla style warfare of the Irish Revolution) but so did Ho Chi Minh. It's nice to know that our struggle and suffering went on to inspire others to take on the behemoth states of both Britain and the US. And, of course, the Irish people were opposed to slavery in the US before this and actually brought Frederick Douglas to Dublin to speak because the Irish saw the plight of slaves of African origin and the Irish slaves and Irish oppression generally. We have been making these connections for a very long time.

    • @susanokeeffe8560
      @susanokeeffe8560 Před 5 měsíci

      Actually it was Daniel O Connell that brought F Douglas to Ireland to ask the Irish who where going to emigrate to America to stand in solidarity with the African American community in America, unfortunate they didn’t and the Irish who emigrated to America attacked and killed them.

      Just to clarify, saying the Irish were slaves is a common white supremacist. My people were not chattel slaves, they were considered indentured servants who were forced to work the land until it was payed off. BIG DIFFERENCE between the two

    • @marykayryan7891
      @marykayryan7891 Před 4 měsíci

      I do have a graduate degree in history so I do not bandy about terms like slavery lightly. In fact, some Irish people were indentured (as were, by the way, some-very few- Black people). But many Irish people were, in fact, kidnapped and sold into actual chattel slavery and worked the fields right next to African slaves. These Irish people were sent to the Caribbean and it was called "Barbadosing the Irish." It was done particularly during Cromwellian times (but also other times) in order to steal land but also just because the Irish were considered an "inferior race" akin to Africans. Pictures of the "debased Irish" who were said to "look like Africans" ran in English newspapers. Here is an entire video on this subject by a young African American man who has just found this out himself. czcams.com/video/icXUl14zjX8/video.html

      We were not enslaved, we were made indentured servants, there's a big difference. Indentured servitude is still evil, but chattell slavery is far, FAR worse

    • @marykayryan7891
      @marykayryan7891 Před 4 měsíci

      As I have said to others. I do have a graduate degree in HISTORY. Irish people were primarily indentured in the United States (aka "the Colonies"). But they were also sometimes enslaved. But it was in the Caribbean they were enslaved on a much larger scale. They were quite literally kidnapped from Ireland and "Barbadosed., which is what this enslavement was called. Here is an entire video made by a young African American man when he discovered this ENSLAVEMENT.
      czcams.com/video/icXUl14zjX8/video.html
      The problem with people who have not actually studied history carefully is that they think that the enslavement of Africans in the Americas was the first and most egregious enslavement. It was certainly egregious, but so were many forms of slavery throughout history and it was absolutely not the former. Do you know who the Mamluks were, for instance? Do you know Muslim laws regarding slaves? No! BEcause you do not know the history of slavery. And just by the by, Africans were also sometimes (rarely) indentured. in the Colonies. And indentured people were often not actually allowed to buy their freedom. So the history of both slavery and indenturing (and serfdom, and villein-ship and, and, and) is complex and interwoven and I REALLY wish that people who know virtually nothing about any of it would just stop talking, please.@@tedthecommenter5364

Israel's only involvement in Gaza, has been providing this enemy population of non-citizens with power and water because their own government (Hamas) refuses to build anything except for weapons, tunnels for smuggling said weapons, *and of-course, mansions and penthouses for its top leaders, who live comfortably in Qatar* and Tunisia and watch the destruction they've brought upon their nation from comfort of their luxury abode! Meshal and Haniya are both *worth over $5 BILLION - more than Opera Winfrey,* but they've not build ANYTHING to warrant it. It's literally aid funds siphoned off.
      In 20 years of Gaza being Jew free, and billions of aid annually, they don't build roads, there exist no bomb shelters for citizens in Gaza (they can build km of tunnels but no shelters? asked recently about this, Hamas leader said: _'the UN should build bomb shelters'_). They don't even provide a rudimentary means of power or clean water for their people, no their people continue to be reliant on a nation they want to erase! After the barbarians set our babies on fire and made parents watch, the people of Gaza danced and celebrated, the only time I remember more joy in Gaza was after 9/11 when they danced and celebrated for DAYS.
      If the Arabs would expend 1/100 of the energy they do against Israel to empower competent leaders on their side, this conflict would be over, and they would be the biggest winners. **When Hamas and Islamic Jihad act, it leads to misery for both Jews and Arabs -- why the heck would ANYONE support these monsters?**

      That is because the U.S. has a soft spot for Ireland and, by virtue of being surrounded by NATO countries, has a natural buffer to any hostilities. It is very noble and I have respect for them because, if you can do it, you should and they are. However, geopolitics isn’t as sentimental as people make it out to be and sometimes you have to ally with people you don’t necessarily trust in order to keep a semblance of peace. All of us in the West live in peace because the U.S. is our ally and has a nuclear arsenal that could wipe the world out (essentially, we’re their hostage but only in the sense that we support them diplomatically.) So yeah, respect to the Irish because they are standing by their morals but somewhere like Ukraine doesn’t have as much legroom.

Ireland, like all of the West, won’t end up like Iraq or Afghanistan because we live in the pocket of the U.S. and under their ‘protection’ on their forceful insistence. What comes around most certainly goes back around. This genocide against Palestinians today has hit a cord with the young generation all over the globe. They will be the revolution of tomorrow. The sad part of all this is, the wait, the patience, the bare minimum sacrifices, and all the loss of innocent lives. It will be them to hang their hats and hold their heads high. I will be looking down one day in hooray. God Willing.

There are a handful of them they spend their whole lives fighting and it must be dispiriting ..its also very hard to remove anyone corrupt like Micheal Martin who was found guilty of corruption was still. A td in my area a few years ago. Like there is no court that will punish these people if they're found to be a lair be corrupt etc. If they promise one policy in their campaign theres nothing that holds them to their promises no legal contract and no oversight ..the best that happens is they resign with a fat pension..it should be considered treason in a country where the people are sovereign to screw the people over.

    I am a 4th generation New Zealand citizen of Irish descent. I love our Maori culture and people here so much and embrace the culture. When I realised what Palestine is going through I followed my heart not knowing much history but colonialism is always unfair and inflicted upon the people in such gross manner. Racism makes my blood boil and my stomach turn. I’m only just realising how Irish I am despite not being there. I actually have been struggling with the fact that I’m so very passionate about justice. I feel connected by this because I truly had no idea that Irish people felt the same. Justice for Palestine 🇵🇸 ❤ I will always stand up for fairness.

Parents who are concerned for the safety of their families and him and the rest of the government calling them nazis, far right and racists. But yet there will never be any of them put in his area only in the poorer areas of Ireland. Over a month ago when posie parker was in dublin on her tour , let women speak. There he was stuck in the middle of all the trans who were counter protesting and paul Murphy as well, no support for women's rights in ireland from any of these people. And tonight the communities in Dublin held a vigil for peace and not one politician turned up or anyone that is affected by this conflict. But boyd barrett decided to hold a protest today of all days, it seems he loves Palestinians more than irish people. But i hear he hates the jews and Israel.

    40:40 Yes. In Finland (apart from some individual volunteers), there is no widespread need to involve ourselves with this fight, amongst the politicians or the people, either; thankfully, as that would go directly against our national interests. The problem, and the pitfall I wish the Finnish government didn’t step into, was the paranoia-fueled need to join NATO: ”Now that Russia invaded Ukraine, it’s only a matter of time, before they’ll invade Finland. Better join NATO! 😱”, which is simply not true. Russia has had no need to invade Finland, in decades. If they wanted to invade us, they would have done so, already. Even before the Winter War, Stalin tried the diplomatic approach, before invasion. Invading Finland was basically the last resort for him. Unfortunately, our then-foreign minister, Eljas Erkko, with his uncompromising stubbornness, left Stalin with no choice, but to invade Finland, for a buffer-zone between Leningrad and Nazi Germany. In the Continuation War, we were the aggressor, trying to create ”Greater Finland”. Russia has never wanted to invade Finland. Before the 1808-1809 War, it was mostly Sweden that invaded Russia, using us Finns, as cannon fodder (although, we were the elite forces, ”Hakkapeliitat”); and, after 1809, there have only been those 2 wars between Russia and Finland, the Winter War and the Continuation War, which, as discussed, were the fault of the Finnish Government. In 1808, Tsar Alexander I was pressured, by Napoleon, to invade Sweden, through Finland; and that war turned out to be a major blessing for us, as it brought us autonomy, under Russia, and freedom not seen here, in 700 years. Of course, the Finnish Government is fully on board with the EU’s sanctions against Russia, but they’ve always kissed the EU’s butt, anyways 😒.

    28:33 Exactly! That’s also one of the key reasons for, why I’ve always been against Finland joining NATO: NATO would only want to use us, as a buffer-zone, against Russia; and it would needlessly sour our relations with Russia, who’s always been our #1 trading partner, in terms of both import and export; and who liberated us from Sweden (which we could have and should have done, ourselves; but were mostly too brainwashed, to do so), elevated us to amongst the nations, with the autonomy they gave us, significantly improved our industry, economy, and living standards (our ship industry was #1, in the world, up until recent years, thanks to Russia), and granted us independence with no conditions, simply for asking for it. Even the war reparations, imposed on us by Stalin, served to improve our steel-industry, which allowed us to conserve more of our forests (Finland is still the most forested country, in Europe, at 75%), and further improved our economy, thanks to the orders (as in, requisitions, not commandments) from the Soviet Union, for our goods. Tsar Nicholas I has also been quoted saying: ”Leave the Finns alone! In my vast Empire, they’re the only ones, who haven’t given me grief!”. Russia, not the West (Sweden, the EU, the USA, etc.), has always been our friend. Sadly, most politicians, and even people; nowadays, here, in Finland, seem to have forgotten this. NATO could also want to use us for America’s wars, in the Middle East. As for the conflict, in Ukraine; while the Russian invasion of the whole Eastern part of Ukraine, may be seen as overkill, the annexation of Crimea and Donbass into Russia, was, in my mind, a righteous and justified response to the bullying and discrimination of the ethnic Russians, in the region, by Poroshenko’s illegal junta, and the realization of the local people’s will to join Russia: In the referendum, ~90% of the people voted for joining Russia/seceding from Ukraine; after which, the referendum was declared illegal (at least, here, in Finland; the media touted the referendum as legitimate; *_UNTIL_* the results came in; at which point, the referendum was declared illegitimate, and the rhetoric immediately and completely changed) 🤔. It’s just that Russia, maybe, should have stopped there (even for the sake of *_THEIR OWN_* interests, as the war hasn’t exactly gone, as planned); but Putin was provoked over the edge, by Zelenskiy’s refusal to re-open the negotiations, regarding the ”Minsk II” -treaty.

    • @PC_Simo
      @PC_Simo Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@zerotoleranceforsataniceli4794 You’re welcome! Not many people, even here, in Finland, know most of that stuff; but I have delved into my country’s history, quite well; and I can read in-between the lines, allowing me to figure stuff out, even from the official history teaching, that they don’t want people to figure out. I also follow non-mainstream sources, like Johan Bäckman, who exposes the truth from the russophobe propaganda, and is pro-Russian, for a reason, like me.
      Indeed! Russia won the 2nd world war, and lost more lives, and contributed more, than everyone else, combined! Yet, when Russia brings this up, the West tends to claim, paradoxically, that ”Russia forgets all the support from Europe and the USA.”, or that: ”The loss of lives was mostly due to Stalin’s incompetence.”, even though, Stalin, unlike Hitler, quickly realized the gravity of the situation, and was not as certain of victory, as Hitler was; and, subsequently, let his generals and field marshalls, like Zhukov, handle the strategic leadership of the war. Luckily, there are some independent filmmakers, in the West, who don’t follow their respective governments’ dictation, and admit that Russia (and Stalin) saved Britain (Prof. David Reynolds, in ”1941 and the Man of Steel”), and that Russia would have won the war, regardless of the support from the West; that the West, at best, helped speed up the victory.
      Also, yes; Israel, definitely, supports the Nazis, in Kiev; and they’re Nazis, themselves, seeking to perpetrate their own Holocaust, on the Palestinian population.
      Also, very true that the West supports and wants Russia to support the Nazis in Kiev; and are interested in prolonging this war that they can’t win; resulting in much more needless bloodshed and loss of lives, on both sides. Very evil, indeed 😔.

    God Bless you and Thank you Sir, Richard Boyd Barett. Your voice gives courage & hope to me and many others. I watch helplessly as the world leaders choose economical terms over the genocide & aparthied as happenning in Palestine. Women, children are the victims with no play in this war. Keep your voice loud. Thank you !

      follow him! he has many, many inspirational and eloquent speeches, never afraid to stand up for his beliefs. Even the party he stands in 'People before Profit' sums his values up.

      Conor McGregors a fuckwit and not many like him over here if thats who youre referring to. Just because he wraps himself in our flag doesnt mean he speaks for us. Hes an embarrasment acting the fool for Yank money.
      I appreciate the sentiment otherwise though. Just speaking the truth
