    Just wanted to take a moment and thank everyone for the incredible conversation in these comments, this is what makes the planner community so great!
    I also want to add that this video or any opinion is NOT targeted at any shops whatsoever. Period. Trends come and go and shops do their best to offer a variety of products that cater to different planning styles and we should continue to support them !
    Thank you as always for the continued love and support! ❤️

      Please put up the polls on CZcams for those who refuse to use IG and FB. I refuse to use these platforms from not seeing my nieces wedding pictures, but just things that made me angry. 3 days after the wedding, and I am overseas, I still had not seen them, so I asked if some were posted, and I got told a lot went up the day of the wedding.

    I think a lot of the “less” comes because the cost of everything else has gone up. It’s so expensive to buy food or go out that I now look at purchasing planner stuff or craft stuff in general like “I could buy this or I could go do something fun with my family.” So I choose to use my stash, which to be honest is way more than I could use in a year anyway. 😂

      I agree with this! I’m on a debt payoff journey for 2024 so I’m totally using what I have. I also hate waste. I also fell guilty of getting too many planners and in 2025, I’m going back to two. My catch all and my budget. That’s it. Life is too expensive right now and having to write in too many planners, nah. I just need my basics and off I go.

    All very interesting. One day you wake up and realize how the over-abundance of supplies and accessories causes more overwhelm than joy. ONE year, I stayed in one planner all year. It was the best Planner season I’ve had since I started.

    All of this! After doing some spring cleaning this year, I was literally sickened by the amount of planner stuff I was not using. My son is off to college to study Environmental Science and Sustainability and he had to give me some hard truths about my overconsumption of planner supplies. I have since really scaled back on my purchases. I am definitely trending toward just one planner and maybe a companion notebook for 2024. Do I miss the cute sticker kits? Maybe. Am I less organized now? No. I'm actually way more productive with everything in one place.

    • @SIMulatedSara
      @SIMulatedSara Před 8 měsíci +6

      Over-consumption was something that struck me immediately when I joined the planner community. I studied ecology and sustainability in for my undergrad, and I was truly shocked to see the massive amounts of just.... stuff. Over-consumption is something that I feel like the planner community (unintentionally) preaches. It takes vulnerability for you to really take what your son said to heart, and make changes that feel good for you. Glad to hear you're more peaceful with your planning now, that's what we're all working towards!

  • @apayne205

    I totally agree that functional planning is being simplified accross the board. I think we should also consider planning to be functional/efficient vs planning as a hobby. For example, I use A6 rings to functionally plan my life, but I like to memory plan, I like to journal with planning supplies. So I may buy some pretty things because it is part of my hobby, but not purchase kits or “functional” items because functionally, I just use pen and graph paper 🙂

  • @HoneyStyleJoy
    @HoneyStyleJoy Před 9 měsíci +14

    Very interesting!
    I do feel like the collective consciousness of the planner community has moved through an experimentation stage and is now definitely streamlining and simplifying our systems with more self-awareness - which may or may not mean a change to their stacks or style. Like, now that I know how I need to use stickers and/or pens to plan for how my brain actually works I don't feel like I'm missing something shiny over there anymore! I have a better sense of how I can use what I have. I can look at a launch and know whether they're actually marketing TO ME or not.
    I think the economy (!!!) and the way social media has us completely overstimulated and overwhelmed has everyone craving more simplicity.

    I am here for these trends. I’m new to the planner community and accidentally on trend. I’m on a tight budget and having fun. I splurged on a Hobonichi order with one Weeks and one Cousin plus new covers for the planners and a Weeks pencil board. I’m reusing my Cousin cover and cover on cover. I have a couple of calendar sticker books I got on sale. I’m shopping my stash and focusing on fountain pens (all but two under $30) and the journaling and memory keeping aspects of planning.

  • @farihienne
    @farihienne Před 9 měsíci +5

    Never bought a sticker kit in my life. I use one planner a year and stick with that. I do like fountainpens and ink but since i don't enjoy a lot of color, i'm very picky with what i pick up. it's so easy to get caught up in all the things 😂

  • @elenamfit
    @elenamfit Před 9 měsíci +11

    I hear this! I didn't buy a lot initially in my journey, and finally allowed myself to go on sort of a 'spree' earlier this fall, as I had never really LET myself buy fun stickers or washi as it's my first year really in the 'planner community.' Honestly, I'm glad I did because now I know what I ACTUALLY am going to use - and now I can be more discerning with my purchases in the future. :) Planning to shop my stash more in 2024. My rule is if it doesn't currently fit in my desk area, I don't need anymore 😅

    This was a great discussion! I agree (and hope) that we are trending away from heavy stickering and huge planner stacks. I’d like to add my perspective as an student living in finland! Finland has it’s own planner/journaling/junk journaling community mostly in Facebook. When I joined the community, happy planner was really in and I feel that people bought so much more things. Like you had to have 5-15 sticker books and then all of the premium washi tape like erin condren etc. However most of the people in those groups are not the most wealthy and in the past years i feel that more people are using what they have buying mostly cheap things but saving money for example the hobonichi planner. I myself as a broke student have done that and I love to look back at my self made journal with little washi and some stickers from childhood. Of course over the years we now have our own stationery shops as well and it’s grate because now we can at least get some of the nice things out there. Few years back it was really hard because the shipping is so costly!

    I've been a planner person since 2015, but this is the first year that ive really watched a lot of planning content. With that said, I loved this video. I've been coming across the 9 planners with a sticker kit per week type of planning and have been tempted, but it wouldn't work for me at all. I am a very functional planner. Loved this video! Yes to the trends you mention. I like one primary planner....It took me a few years to figure out that its not efficient for me to write stuff in more than one notebook. I might as well go back to mountains of sticky notes, which is what I did before I found the EC planners in 2018. Happily spent 2023 in the Hobonichi Cousin and will in 2024 also. I love the flexibility and gobs of room. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and "survey results". Most enjoyable. And we all probably could do with a little more 'planner / supplies no spend' days....

I love embellishments/stickers and layering so a planner or memory keeping product needs to be in rings or discs because it requires bulk! I have never, ever, ever been able to use more than 1 planner. I have 1 and only 1 for every year and absolutely everything goes in there. I would definitely get way too much anxiety trying to keep up with everything. Being over whelmed and then probably just end up using one planner and I guess because of my style of planning I have been using disc bound planner for about 8 years. Because its so friendly if I needed to add a section or remove them if I no longer needed it.

    I still love watching ya’ll decorate your planners to the hilt. But, I’ve moved onto my Plum Paper Vertical Priorities for my daily use and my Plum Paper Horizontal Priorities for my Reading Journal. Since retirement I’m reading 200+ books a year. So I do use Peanut Butter Taco stickers on every page. But they are geared toward book types, not kits. And they are bright primary colors. Color makes my heart sing.
    I also bought a budget planner designed by SaraMarieStickers since I learned my pension budgeting from her system. I think that planner will be more cost effective than buying an EC Monthly Planner and buying stickers to set up every page. This system has really helped me managed my money, so I consider it money well spent. My sticker purchases seem to be limited to text only. Not cheap, but time savings.
    Now for the shocker. I started out as a Happy Planner girl and love the fact that my PPP are all punched for disk use. You can’t take the disks away from a Happy Planner girl! 😂

    I am completely with you regarding the minimalism in planning. Most of the time I stick with only one planner per year, but I used to use a lot of stuff to plan: stickers and all the things. I have adopted the book-bound, pen and highlighter with minimal stickers (only because I want to use what I have). And let me tell you, this change has been liberating!

    L O L - i just joined the planner community this after being so bored with hobo (after almost a decade) I came to see what else was out there. I am super happy I did - after experimenting with a LOT of things, I ended up with a A5 discbound plum paper planner, that I have turned into a larger planning system. I can decorate my dashboard pages with deco stickers to my hearts delight, and have more 'pen and paper' type sections as well. This has been my only planner once I decided, and i have bought the same for 2024. I might end up with a weeks for travel, but haven't decided yet. Everything I own fits on a single craft cart, and I plan to keep it that way! Fun video, thanks!

    I found myself COLLECTING planner supplies, not utilizing them. I don’t mind spending money on something if I’m actually using it but I wasn’t. Also, I found myself spending money trying to make spiral bound work for me. It just didn’t and now I have tons of spiral bound stuff. I have always been a minimalist sticker user. I use a planner to clear my mind and have a clear vision of my goals and needs. Sticker kits were to busy for my needs.

    I like stickers for important things or my vision boards but I’m a Tombow and dot marker girl. I use fitness and self care stickers when I need extra motivation and I really like month / day and goals / action header stickers for things that repeat throughout my planner because I like the consistency of it. I set that all up when I move into my planner every year. If had beautiful handwriting, I would probably just write it tho honestly.

    Definitely agree when it comes to kits! I just got back into planning and was thrilled about all the kits available because I’m not super artistic. I bought some to try it out, but found that I missed decorating my spread based on my mood and using my random creativity on any given day. Plus, kits add up and get expensive.

    I love that I changed to Swen bound planner with She Plans. It is a Beautiful sewn planner, with lots of options, easy to carry, sticker if you want, lightweight to transport in purse or on own. Split into quarters so much less bulk. I use some stickers and some pen. I love it seeing both! Not commented to either. Think about what you want and have fun!!! Thank you, Julie for this video and encouraging change!! Person specific but nice to watch videos

    I agree with pretty much everything you said. I feel like while not quite minimal we are looking at lot less sticker heavy planning. More use of what we have which I really think will spawn creativity in a different way. I also think with mental health things the way they are we will see more using your planner to cope or maybe that’s just me. :)

    Fun video! I agree other than coils. Even though I switched to rings this year, I don't think coils are going anywhere - like you said even ML switched to coil. Agree 100% will the sticker for everything. I am currently debating getting rid of all of those stickers. I still like a simple 1/4 box for events so I can move it around if something gets rescheduled. It also helps it stand out for me more than pen alone. The no white space planning has always blown my mind. I could never - my brain couldn't handle all that stimulation.

    New subscriber here 🙂 I loved this video! There are a lot of things I agree with. I have fallen victim to the overconsumption in the past and it is something I have been working on. I look at the vast amount of Tombows that I never use, the washi tapes I thought I had to have but don't love, alllllll the notebooks. Okay, I have to admit, I love notebooks and tend to have them on hand for various things. I did the planner hopping thing a bit at the beginning of 2023 and in the last half, I have settled in my Cousin Avec. It truly is my brain on paper and fits all of my needs (work full time, full-time student, mom, wife, house to run, etc). I do have a supplement book on the side for when I need a blank page (collections, etc) and I love the Hobonichi notebook for this. One thing I can't get past is the planner stacks! I am completely shocked seeing the stacks that others have. The continuous planner hopping that happens is just exhausting. And expensive. I think people feel FOMO. A popular CZcamsr that I follow switched (again) and the comments from her followers were along the lines of, "Now I need this type of book!" I do admit, I enjoy the stickers and kits. I will make the occasional purchase from TCMC and do love her washi (her washi is so cute and I love to use it) and I do have some kits lined up, but I have started going with purchasing printables that I can buy once and print as many times as I want on my Cricut. It works great and it is cheaper. I am definitely more about function over form and planning is first, stickers are second, but I do like to look back over my Avec from July and see how my year evolved and the stickers to tell the story a bit. I see the fun in that, haha! I think your video was well presented and you laid out everything well! Thank you for sharing! Looking forward to your content!! 🥰

    I agree with all of it!! I bought a MomAgenda spiral planner after watching AmandasFavorites review it and I am so happy with it. I have always been a paper planner and am guilty of planner hopping!! I have finally found one I feel 100% content with. I will wait until the 2024 one is finished and then I will try my first ever softbound (from MomAgenda) I am in the stage of life where I want to downsize all my stuff and be more mindful of what I bring in. I feel like many in the planner community are leaning towards simple and what truly works for them now. Stickers are fun but I really only use them for holidays so I do not need to buy tons. Thanks for the video, its nice to see others that are feeling the same.

Once I become a planner girl, I can't go back to "nothing" so for next year I have only one Midori Poket Diary planner, b6, ready structured by months and weeks, ready decorated and for daily appointments at work/life I have most simple & cheap but beautiful hourly planner ... that's all folks! I agree with you for so many of these points! I've downsized things and was almost to the point of going Hobonichi alone (a shock, since I've always had a 7x9 vertical planner!), but added a small daily to the mix just for work items. In addition to feeling like I don't need to buy all the things, I was also spending so much time just updating all of the stuff and deco-planning. However, lately, we've been focusing on traveling and doing things outside of the house, and my planning time has reduced. We are still trying to develop a good routine for processing our digital memories and memory-keeping in general. I'd love to hear your thoughts in this space.

    Agree with all of this especially the planner stack/overconsumption aspect. I’m relatively new to this community but I have about 4 planners for the past two years that I had to say RIP to. But that was after I had purchased only God knows how many 7x9 stickers only to be in the Hobonichi Cousin for this year, so those stickers have literally been collecting dust. I will try to use up this next year. I’m looking forward to only carrying 1 cousin and 1 weeks for next year. I don’t do well going back and forth between planners so for me less is more. 1 everything planner and 1 health planner. Hopefully come this time next year I will still feel this way! I will say, your videos, even old ones help me figure out how to use up my stickers so that’s really helpful. Thanks for the videos.

The thing I have to do is stop subscribing to all these planning subscriptions. Cutting them all off in December. I’m definitely a one planner lady but this year I did try using two and I didn’t like having to update two planners plus journaling too. It’s all supposed to be enjoyable and if you make it turn into work that takes away from your hobby.

    What is interesting is here in the UK, a lot of stationary shops have closed, it made the planner community really change. The planner conferences are fewer and people have gone to the basics. Coiled planners are not that popular, unless it’s a soft coil, that people can take off to include more pages, and different types of paper. The American brands are way to expensive because of the postage and Amazon seems not to sell refills or the season some of them were sold is like three to four months out of date. In a place like London, space is a premium, so to have a lot of planners where there is no room to pack them, has allowed for down sizing. Just to mention stationary shops closing, to get anything local is difficult, and to rely on online products when you cannot see how it works can be costly. So in the UK it’s had to downsize.
    Want say thank you for this video, there needs to be discussion on buying what we need instead of trends. Like it’s been mentioned before, the planner works for you, instead of working for the planner.

    This has been the best journal vid with value! I was swept up initially with fomo. Until I became anxious with the task of storing everything .
    If it is packed away it isn't used and that won't do. I have recently joined a journaling meetup and it is so great to try a little this and that when shared versus buying all the latest washi ,stickers and so on. It reaffirms I want my journal to be a representation of me and not the other 400 journals using the same stickers ( no disrespect to the creatives making beautiful items) I now enjoy using my little hoard and not making things so precious. I agree, bound is the so nice! I have rings and spiral but was gifted a Hobonichi and the Flat life was everything. lol I didn't know I needed a planner with this layout. Love this video... I've just found your channel. I used to use Franklin Covey. That's right. Strictly for work and it was so costly. When I saw the lady drop her Palm Pilot in the Franklin Covey store and bust out crying like life would end because she just killed her device, I said I'd never get one of those! But then I got a Blackberry and several types of planners I didn't stick with. I've always been a paper list girl so when I discovered Happy Planner CZcams videos that used a bunch of stickers, this scrapbooker lost her little sticker mind. But I finally tried a Hobonichi Weeks. I can list till my heart is content AND it will fit in whatever purse with my big iPhone. Yes, the stickers still tempt me but I'm walking away. I have enough sticker books to last me a lifetime now if I feel so inclined. Plus those things are like $22 dollars now! That's a large fries at Five Guys LOL.

    I totally agree with less planner hopping. I think the last couple of years, people were trying to figure out what was going to work, so they switched planners mid-year or had a big planner stack. Now that they (and I) have figured out what works best, we can just buy what we need. For me, that’s an Agendio Planner (that has monthly, weekly, and daily spreads) and an Archer & Olive Bujo for journaling and memory keeping. Thanks for the video!

    I think that a lot of the things that we see in the planner community are a result of the pandemic and economy. People are not going to be able to keep up with buying all of the things. I wish as a community that we would stop encouraging people "to buy all of the things". I know we need to find what we like, but there is a line where it becomes excessive. I think people are still going to have planner stacks because it is the only way they can use all of the planners they have or want all at the same time. It also helps to justify their purchase. I personally think people have moved to bound books because it is trendy and it forces people to only carry the essentials, as you cannot stuff the bound book as much as rings and therefore it becomes lighter and easier to carry. I personally am trying a two planner system this year and next, because anytime I try to use more I end up not reaching for the third planner. I even stopped purchasing stickers because I was more concerned with having it look eye catching than the actually planning. It actually caused me anxiety to use stickers. Tombows, pencils, washi tape (my favorite) and paper for me. How I plan to get me giggles is to just switch covers, but even that will have a limit. I have been planning my planning system for over 6 months, including budgeting for it so I don't go into debt, the accessories, everything and I have to admit that it feels good. I am someone who thrives on restrictions because if left to my own devices I would ensure my own destruction lol
