Do We Need Music Journalists More Than Ever Now?!

- Today I'm speaking with my favourite music jounalist of all time, Pat Carty, who writes for numerous outlets, but particularly Hot Press, Ireland's leading music magazine. We discuss the merits, the pitfalls and the role of a music journalist in the music industry. Do we need them? Is it important to have curators and "gatekeepers"? Let's talk about it.

Dear Mr. Hawkins, Until i heard your intros i had resigned the notion that i might be able to hear something like an Alfred Deller in my lifetime. - Im thinking of something from Couperin's lecons des Tenebres, but Plaint of the Fairies Queene is the pinnacle of falsetto for me personally. ex. - czcams.com/video/pqwBB8Nut4s/video.html
Also Jeff Buckley***.
Yes, Jeff is from our lifetime but he is also not among us now. But here you are, so i'm asking you: Would you please sing something? Perhaps something like Corpus Cristi Carole. From where i sit it sounds like volume control is right next to vibrato control in making falsetto sharp rather than flat. Is this right?
Also - Shara!!! Another Chance.- czcams.com/video/VcG9UTogtCI/video.html
Thanks for everything.

02:17 Great voice!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
One of the best singers of the theme tune of all the podcast guests!!!👍
True, he was awsome!
I love that Pat’s kitchen looks what an Irish kitchen should look like. So great to hear Pat again - never a dull moment - he’ll never run out of stories. What a fabulous, interesting life. Wonderful. This is just like meeting Pat in Whelan's and shooting the breeze.
Aw, Pat sang the two agains on point! 👌
Loved the honest, informative and humorous conversation. 👏🏻 There is some interesting vibe and banter going on. 🙂
Justin is a great watch.... I never knew or heard your music before I saw you on CZcams... Love both... I am a Northern California man (66) first concert in 1973 (Led Zeppelin) a life long Rock and Roller...
Keep up the great work!! Love your guest would have a smoke with you anyway!!
What a guy, defo get him back 😉👍
I would love the patcast again… please😉
Pat Carty needs to be hired immediately as the Darkness tour director. I'd pay EXTRA VIP money just to wire up the stigmata device.
Brilliant show.
Thank you Mr Hawkins for sharing and you have yourself a great night.
OMG, I miss Pat soooo much. I cannot wait to watch this later when I am home from work 😚
£900 to watch Coldplay, wow! I wouldn’t even watch them if they paid me £900
I think that show's prices are too much expensive nowadays. In spite it involves a lot of workers, technology, etc...paying 900 for a concert... A VIP pass i suppose... But it is crazy at all. The last year GnR were playing in my city. It was the second time the did, the first was in 1992, i was 16.
In that time i couldn't go to the show and it was my favourite band at this moment with Extreme.
So when i read that GnR was going to open Europe tour in my city the past year i was jumping of happiness. But my mood changed soon when i saw that prices were over 70 euros the cheapest. And i would have pay 70 but when i could access the site they were sold out and the only chance was more than 130... My current job is very unstable and it means i don't get pay every month so i couldn't pay this money. I had to shape with the recording that someone did from his cell telephone and added to youtube.
I love going to shows (if i like the artist or band) but i can't spend the money it costs now.
In this subject i think The Darkness has very affordable prices.
The only fault is that they don't come to Spain 😂
I have been checking the prices in different places but "the joke" increased when i have to add travel cost and stay because it would be in another country. But if i had enough money, everything would be cheaper than the price of some concerts nowadays!
More of this❤
Loved this episode. Definitely need to see more of Pat!
Ooh the harmonizing of those dulcet tones 😊
Oh Pat....how I have missed ye! Thanks to you Justin, for bringing him back for an encore!
Bring Pat back on Sundays😉
Paaaatttt!! Loving this already ❤
Ohh I just realized today..... I missed Pat so much!!!
Thanks, Justin, Great to see you got Super Fan Pat Carty to do the work on the Permission to Land liners notes, was he biased, or a real reviewer …😅😅
That was brilliant, I vote for more pat, and more arse shenanigans.... Wait a minute..........that didn't come out quite right.
lovely vibrato in Pat's voice.
Recently I received, read, listened to, and watched The Darkness Permission To Land...Again (20th anniversary edition) 4CD & DVD super deluxe set, and really enjoyed it! They did such a great job on this set, and also included lots of photos. I thought that Pat Carty did an excellent job with the booklet liner notes. It's well worth the price.
yes yes go for it, this precious content must be released more often and become public heritage
Diamond. A weeks holiday off work with Jussy Bhoy and Pat Carty🙌🙌❤❤
WTFW!!!! Can't believe who is next guest!!!!!!🔔🔔🔔
Can't wait for next monday!Yayyyyyy!🥳🥳🥳
Brilliant, the time just disappeared. I'm not familiar with Pat's oeuvre, but I like him a lot.
💚Pat Carty!!💚
I sincerely wish you would review Nothing But Thieves. Excellent band.
brilliant love pat, miss you both chatting shite on Sundays, Id love to see a mega podcast with yourself, pat and Jenny. that would be fantastic.
goodluck raining in 70s top Adidas model Frankie for next week, would love to hear from the king of the bass point and microphone haircut.
Pat, glad to see you've found a career that you are happy in (We've at least that in common!). You were always more interested in LPs than IPs! haha.
I was copy editor of my high school paper. A fond memory is reviewing Duran Duran's Medazzaland and beginning the article with the line "They're on the hunt, they're after more." 🙈
Yay Pat 💚
I've so missed Pat Carty, the jokes are thick when Pat and Justin get together. Bring on more Pat MMP.
Justin you were right about George producing the 2nd Black Crowes album, but it was Brendan O’Brien
(Engineer/Mixing) who really made that album sound the way it did. Even the Crowes themselves have admitted it.
This is my first time listening to Pat Carty and trust me it won't be the last...Amazing chat full of stuff I didn't know as usual on this podcast and listening to two old mates just chatting and having a laugh is seriously underrated...Great stuff as always Justin, cheers.
There's a ton of Patcasts on Justin's patreon. Probably CZcams as well. They used to chat every Sunday for hours. I love Pat!!
I don't bother reading album reviews any more after someone said when Journey's album Escape was released it's like a mechanical hare at the greyhound track, it doesn't really go anywhere. Interviews is one thing but reviews is a personal preference.
What’s his day job? He seems busy enough. Enjoyed the chat. He has a great voice.
Finally Frankie!! 🙂
Great podcast Justin, I've never been a music journalist but if I was, I think I'd love to journal the Darkness playing Dinner Lady Arms at Newcastle on their upcoming tour. 👍
If you don't get it i cry...
@@raquelsnt I cry too, but I will comment until Justin confirms it's in the setlist 🤣
@@chefyvr please let us now if he finally sings the song even it be cappella... I love that song too 😂
I see a request for this song to be on the setlist about every other day.
So....your move, Darkness.
I heard a phrase, second-hand, supposedly attributed to Bob Geldof (and this would have been nearly 20 years ago now) that what is missing is "filtered excellence". I don't typically look to him for wisdom, but I thought that was quite well stated. The internet has broken open access for artists, unlike the old days when it was essentially throttled by record labels and radio. That was a very specific, top-down filtering, and while it discouraged some, it probably did screen out some of the junk. I think finding reviewers who you can sense have similar tastes is quite valuable these days to find what's out there, where the wheat is unseparated from the chaff.
Concerts also support local vendors, hoteliers, b n b's, rental companies, local security firms, logistics companies et cetera.
Fair point.
Love ya Pat!
One for comments day: what do artists do on the release day of an album? Obviously there's lots of promo but do they get to decide what they do in terms of meet & greets, interviews etc or is it all decided for them? Perhaps a deep dive episode..
451,000🎉🎉🎉…yes me again…it’s only Pat Carty!!!😅
Thank you for this! JUSTIN, THE CULT have announced they are resurecting DEATH CULT for a UK 40 year Anniversary tour in november. Would love to hear your reaction to that please!!
Death Cult have announced a UK, US and Ireland tour in honour of the band’s 40th anniversary taking place later this year.
The band, consisting of Billy Duffy and Ian Astbury, will be returning to play iconic venues they previously performed in at the start of their career. According to a press release, the shows, titled Death Cult 8323, will focus on Death Cult and their eponymous EPs, and will also “boast a setlist that spans the three phases of the band, from Southern Death Cult, to Death Cult, and The Cult’s first two albums: ‘Dreamtime’ (1984) and ‘Love’ (1985).”
Justin, do you know the name of the Les Inrockuptibles journalist and author of the book you mentioned? Or even just the book?
01:58 Hello Pat!!! 👋😊
More Pat!!!
Pat fuckin’ Carty 🤘🍻❤️
I think the old style radio DJs have always been the most important. Those who pick & play only the songs they think are good. I don’t think I ever bought a record based off of a review. I do read them, I just don’t buy until I hear for myself. Unless of course the album artwork looks cool. That’s the most important, haha!
Yay Pat!!
Nice one guys
happy Monday
I believe that as a successful musician with a loyal fan base, it is not necessary to rely on journalists to promote your music. You can use social media to connect with your fans and control your own rock narrative.
And looking cute as always JH ❤
Carty!! 🤘
Great interview Justin. Really enjoyed that.
Writing this comment whilst listening to the introduction. I'm no longer writing about music on a regular basis (just when asked/paid), having written for the BBC, The Hit Sheet and various others, but it will be interesting to here what Pat has to say re bad reviews, as I think they have all but disappeared. There are simply no sh*t filters left in the industry now. The great and brave A&R folk have gone, the honest review, positive or not are all but extinct, and the less said about the playlist compilers for radio the better.
I still sneak the odd one in, as the bishop said to the actress.
Thank god for that. @@kingtrashcan A band that shall remain nameless, once tried to sue me for a negative review. Good luck trying to sue an opinion I replied. Didn't stop them trying though.
@@kingtrashcan I do have to say though Pat; Long gone are the days of the NME describing a Paul Young single as "A lank pool of dog semen". 🤣
@@EartwisterTV I did call a recent Neil Young album "arse water of the brownest hue."
@@kingtrashcan 😆Nice work.
I can't find my first comment, what strange thing!
Well it doesn't care i post again!
I have liked the interview a lot, about your final question i think that musical journalism is very important because it is the way to people learn to listen music. Education is very important and the journalist do this job.
Nowadays culture and art are underrated and music, culture in general is monetized. It maybe affects to journalists job too, because they haven't the freedom enough to write or have their or opinion.
I think CZcams is being glitchy. I've seen several comments come and go, looking through the comments section tonight.
@@MariaFrancesca yes!
Mmmmm…nope!..just be yourself and make music you like. Great channel by the way..
I guess the question isn't 'should rock and roll be separated from politics', but 'CAN it be separated from politics'? (as a whole, of course individuals can...)
The point of All journalists today is to gate keep for corporate or political interests. And those interests are not your interests or my interests. Journalists are to News as Simon Cowell is to Talent
At about 1:00:00 in, I remember when punk hit, with the Dead Kennedys, the Sex Pistols, the Plasmatics, Agent Orange, etc., and they were all “f*ck the establishment” kind of bands. Rock, even prior to punk, was similar, though less “in your face” f*ck the establishment. Black Sabbath was supposed to offend someone, just with their name.
If I were in a rock band, I would boycott any country that persecutes people based on their sex, or their sexuality.
(Cue the Offspring’s “Bad Habit” just thinking about those goddamn motherfvckers that punish women and same sex couples.)
I just had a fond memory of Oingo Boingo playing “Violent Love” at Perkins Palace on Halloween.
Rock is not supposed to be “politically correct” (a term that didn’t exist in the 20th century). It’s not supposed to be a safe little bubble of obliviousness, like a Perry Como song. It’s supposed to make us think outside of what we’re taught to think. (Cue Queensrÿche’s “Mindcrime” album, or Elton John’s “Burn Down the Mission” (the song that got my 7 year old butt on a piano bench, determined to play like that).
Great conversation, guys. I do miss guitar magazines, mostly for the interviews with guitarists like George Lynch, Chris DeGarmo, Paul Gilbert, etc., but never gave a f*ck about reviews. I let my ears decide what I like.
There’s a new-ish band, and their catalogue of music is still pretty small, but they have some good songs, and I’m hoping you’ll check them out. Their name is Fencer, and the best songs, so far, are “Pitchblack,” “growingupselfish,” and “Sleepcount,” though, to be fair, I haven’t had time to dig deep into their newest album. Avoid “June Bug”- even the writer/lead singer/guitarist hates that one.
They’re kind of a garage-y sounding rock-punk mix. “Come on, Keep Screaming” is off the new album. I think Justin might think they’re fun.
Add a San Diego date to your tour, and pick them up in LA, and I’ll buy a ticket (please play a smaller, theater type venue, like the HOB, or the Observatory at North Park).
Yes, we want to hear more of this. Pat is fun. Sorry I don’t know how to vote with my feet 👣.
Superb as always. Yes! More arse please 😁👍
All I know is that Pat Carty has the appropriate level of reverence for Phil Lynott and that makes him supremely qualified for anything.
Plzz review the action Bronson NPR tiny music performance. He’s a rapper but he added an amazing live band
Love ya Justin. The fans are the only ones that matter. Not the fking journalists.
Correct.
Yippee it's Aldi Pat
you should give one or two, a recent steve lehto video talks about a newspaper, recently, that has been raided by a police department that didn't like what they wrote, patently illegal, reason to care, cause, they'll just as likely go after you if you show up in their town.
Jesus, for a second there I thought jenny may finn had really let herself go,
Harsh, but fair.
@@kingtrashcan you are a beautiful looking man, but in fairness your not a great looking woman. That's all I meant, honest, now turn that frown upside-down handsome and go get 'em tiger.
@@johnnyjohnsonmusic "you are a beautiful looking man, but in fairness your not a great looking woman." Ha, Ha! I'm forced to agree with that.
in the age of streaming, there is no point..........just check out the music
I never read music mags growing up or now because there were things I loved that if I listened to others, I would never have listened to. Everybody has their own tastes. You don't know if an artist was bad if you didn't try them yourselves. Even then the review might have been correct for you, but not right for the guy next to you.
Justin Fucking Hawkins Rides Againnnnnnnnnnn! 🎶🎶🎶
You never said it, but for a lot of people, the ire of FOMO is serious. As a person who had to save up to see a concert, FOMO was just the norm. I couldn’t afford to see Whitesnake, Ozzy, Darkness, or Don Broco. The people who will be excited about the record will not be able to be see the show. They will will buy the record, live the record, but will not be able to see the show. That’s horrible.
As an older person, I lived to see GnR, Prince(several times), the Cure, etc… the opportunities were there. Make the tickets available!! That’s where the longevity happens.
Good point.
Depends on the ethics of the journalists
I would just love if bands would actually play and sing on recordings without computer correction. You can have perfection or transcendence, you can't have both.
i think the person that they were talking about that lost the plot is either axel rose or kanye west
I thought Morrissey and guess Pat thought that as well. Now I'm really curious?? 44:00
Ah, different genre. It's gotta be Kanye as a guest of Travis Scott.
Although those two and Morrissey could be the power trio the world deserves right now.
ahhhhhhhhh @@eddiebrown8715 thank you of this ! Was on the Morrissey bandwagon too
Music journalism is a hard one. it’s definitely been one of the best and worst things for music in history.
