i think azhdaha being able to take elements from the irminsul is because of the geo element itself, and to be more specific i mean the crystallize reaction, crystallize is basically geo crystal that stores another element inside it, and that's what azhdaha probably did, this would explain why azhdaha doesn't use anemo and dendro elements because geo doesn't react with them.
He's also connected to the leylines. The leylines also have elements flowing through them
Another thing: the girl Azhdaha possesses calls Rex Lapis an usurper. Apep calls The Heavenly Principles usurpers. Hmm…

Plus the Earth element is the basis of all life and the origin of alchemy (art of khemia is an type of alchemy that focuses on CREATING LIFE). The record on Zhongli being atronger than Azhdaha is marred I think. Azhdaha states that Zhongli was the strongest but Zhongli later states that its not necessarily the case, believing that he may not have been able to seal Azhdaha if Azhdaha didn't possess any will to allow it.
Also, we now know that the dragons that roam Teyvat now are weaker than their former strength. So we can potentially add that, plus the erosion that was weakening Azhdaha as a factor here.
Also, given that the tree we see was just the tip of his tail, we can scale that to the rest of his body to get an idea of his true size when he roamed the earth. We also have to remember that Azhdaha may yet still have been even bigger than that because if he was the original dragon, he would have taken a beating from first decenders before being sealed and robbed of his body by them.
I believe that Phanes used the dragons to make Teyvat as we know it, a lot of the water will be stolen from the water dragon, the earth, the earth dragon, the trees, the verdure dragon, the sky, the air dragon, etc etc. The elemental realm, the light realm and the vishap realm are supposedly one in the same, therefore, it stands to reason, that the make up of Teyvat and its current elements, was robbed from the dragons domain, which from what I read of the Fontaine wings, may well have been the elemental dragons themselves.

I like the speculation. Sadly i dont think we'll ever know if Azhdaha was a Sovereign. Liyue Arc is pretty much complete so it's unlikely, unless Hoyo decided to revisit it

A TCG card for him calls him the Geovishap ancestor, that + his boss drops are good enough indication for me.
Also, now with Chenyu, I think its pretty safe to say that Liyue lore is not complete.
Zhongli didn't create azhdaha he only gave him eyes later,zhongli says liyue storyteller stories are mostly false,so Azhdaha is geo dragon.

I believe all sovereigns are as big as Apep in their true form.

After completing zhongli story quest I also believed that azhdaha is a geo sovereign because the effort made by morax to believe him was a great accomplishment for Liyue people he helped him in archon war without him zhongli would have lost the archon war
And he basic thing i dint understand why people called morax as a weak when they compared him with neuvillette as a saw some theory they said about morax that he was unable to seal azhdaha because of his own power the Yakshas also did not help him to seal so basically they trying to say that zhongli so weak with his power that he can’t even seal azhdaha can anyone explain this to me ????
I didn't really get your last question, sorry. But I'd like to bring something to your attention: Morax' temper.
Idk who ever said Morax was weak or wouldn't have won the Archon War without help, but they surely tripping. Morax was already alive before Phanes terraformed Teyvat to house humans, he survived the times of war between the Usurpers and the Vishaps, he's one of the most ancient deities in Genshin...and he was absolutely ruthless until Guizhong's death, some 2000 years ago.
To sum it all up, Morax had help from friends during the war, yes, but he'd fought alone and didn't care about making friends or alliances, he would have won his Divine Throne way faster than anyone else by simply slaughtering anything and everything in Liyue, be it other deities or their populations. That's how dangerous Morax was back then.

Idk know about this... I remember one sentence in Zhongli story quest which... Zhongli see a mountain that doesn't have an eye... what I remember is Zhongli the one who help to get that mountain a pair of eye from sun... and Azhdaha is just a rock without an eye that can't do nothing back then... so I think Azhdaha isn't a sovereign dragon and I think since morax is dragon himself... I bet he is the sovereign dragon of geo
