  • Welcome back to James Bond Revisited, where we take a look back at all the 007 movies counting down to the eventual release of No Time to Die, which should come out... someday. This week, we're taking a look at Roger Moore's much-maligned second-to-last James Bond outing, Octopussy, which went up against Sean Connery's Never Say Never Again in the 1983 Battle of the Bonds and won!
Here's the thing - I love Octopussy. As a child, it was probably my favorite James Bond movie, so I have a weird, elemental connection to it. Is it critically a good movie? You tell me in the talkback below, but as you'll see in this video, it's a movie that's close to my heart. But, did you know James Brolin was all set to take over the part and Roger Moore only came back at the last minute? Check out our video and see why for yourself!

Never apologise for loving "Octopussy". It's a stupendous movie: a glorious ride of non stop action in a neo-vintage adventure movie style. In short, a superb addition to the James Bond canon.

Moore’s third best Bond film. And IMO it would have been the perfect swansong for his tenure as 007. Yes, there is a Tarzan yell, there is an out of date reference with the reference to Barbara Woodhouse (SIT) Yes, there is a Merchant Ivory carnival vision of India... But this is a Moore Bond film, and tell me, which other screen hero could not only dress up as a clown, but look serious whilst defusing a bomb?
Maud Adams looks good and is very decent in the role. Louis Jourdan was born to play a Bond villain, and his line delivery and dialogue is fantastic. Steven Berkoff as General Orlov is just bats**t crazy. The guy probably drinks a mug of espresso laced with cocaine. The action is okay, the set pieces look good, the song is okay but IMO it fits in with the idea of Moore of leaving on an All Time High. Barry’s score is good, and IMO it was his best Bond score after over a decade on autopilot (nowhere near as great as his last Bond score, but its good to see him putting in the effort)
Shame this wasn’t Moore last Bond film, a nice swansong... but sadly it wasn’t.

Octopussy is, along with TWINE, the most underrated film in the series. People don’t take it seriously because Bond is wearing a clown suit while attempting to disarm the bomb, but they’re missing the point. Bond has done everything he can to get to the circus, and nobody is believing him, and it’s all thanks to convincing Octopussy that the people are saved from the bomb. Plus, it’s here that Moore’s seriousness inspired Dalton for his run as Bond. It’s my 3rd favorite Roger Moore film, and one of my very favorite films of all time high.

I love "Octopussy." I think it's Moore's best performance, which can be summed up in two words. "Double sixes." If you look past the circus trains and tiger hunts, General Orlov's plot to detonate a nuclear weapon on an American military base in Europe is the scariest villain plot in the entire series. In fact, Frederick Forsyth used the exact same idea, though played much more seriously, in "The Fourth Protocol," which was published the following year. The film version features Pierce Brosnan as the Russian villain. I have several friends who love "The Fourth Protocol," but I find it very dull and will argue that the story works much better with circus trains and tiger hunts. And Roger Moore.

One of my favorite Bond movies, easily in my top five or ten. It's so much fun. At some parts it feels like a legit Cold War thriller as the Germany segments are great with tense moments thanks to John Glen's directing, John Barry's score, and Roger Moore's acting. When Bond has to defuse the bomb in the clown suit, it really showed how good of an actor Moore was. Moore played the role lighter but whenever he played it serious we pay attention. It takes talent to manage that so well.
Funnily enough you mentioned wanting to see Daniel Craig have more fun? So does he. It's been apparent from Skyfall but more so Spectre how he wants to lighten up the role again. With No Time To Die, I really hope he gets to go out with a bang but also with that signature Bond balance.

I loved the way you expressed how wonderfully Roger Moore played the lighter and darker sides of bond. You're absolutely right, when Roger Moore's bond was funny, he was funny, but when he had to be serious he did it with a raw intensity that was believable, and didn't need swearing, screaming, super-fake and elaborate fight scenes that go one forever, and a constantly brooding look that makes me cringe. I have remembered it over 20 years. Everything else in between is just pure fun. It is the most colourful and comix like Bond ever made. You can feel they really had good time doing it and they did excellent job. I love all Moore's movies except AVTAK and Moonraker. Maud Adams chemistry with Roger is superb. At one point I read that Roger really enjoyed working with her. She makes this film fun and special. Louis Jourdan was a superb villian. This was the last Bond film I went to see with my Father before his heart disease and cancer. So I think of how much we enjoyed seeing this together. Now it's 41 year's ago and I look back on the great memories it has for me. Kristina Wayborn is also great in this too and the John Barry score is so good. I just bought the expanded 40th Anniversary CD film score of "Octopussy". Bond films used to be fun and pure escapism. This was a very special film and time for me in my life. Yes, I also watched this as the ABC Saturday night movie of the week. And it’s also my favorite James Bond film. It just has everything that defines a Roger Moore Bond movie and if Moore is your Bond, then this is the movie for you IMO. Now some trivia: the story that Octopussy tells about James Bond allowing her father to save face and honor was the entire plot of the original Octopussy story written Ian Fleming.

Set pieces like the crowd oohing when he hits the guy with a tennis racket are really great, set the right tone are fun and don't take themselves deadly seriously. That balance is very hard to do and is what people loved about Bond and Roger Moore in particular. That miniature jet scene stands out as well.

Octopussy is on my top 10:Bond films. As silly as it was, it has its darker moments. I always remember Bond tracking down and ending the assassin who killed his fellow agent. Moore goes deadly serious and says, with perfect venom “That’s for 009.” I also remember Octopussy because my mom loved Louis Jourdan watched it just for him. She would get this cute little grin and pronounce his name with the appropriate accent, and a look that said she had a secret, or knew something I didn’t. Maud Adams and her “amazons” were awesome too. Anyway, very entertaining film.

“For Your Eyes Only” was Roger Moore’s best Bond film by far. He managed to give Bond more humanity, balanced with his natural charm. Excellent cast. And the script had roots in two Ian Fleming short stories, with some thrilling action.
But then he and John Glen drew up a new “To Do” list: crocodile mini-sub, Tarzan yell, dated joke about pet training, tennis racquet fight, gorilla suit, clown suit, and a fight outside a plane. Add a stereotypical view of India: rope tricks, snake charmers, nail beds, crowd scrambling for cash. A scooter-taxi chase - filmed at Pinewood. (All devised at their “home base”: the most expensive five-star hotel in India.) Stir in Moore’s idea of wit: “Here, this should keep you in curry for awhile.” Top it off with a Swedish leading lady, and a Frenchman as an “Afghan” prince. (What, no Indian actors were available?) Perfect list for a genuinely annoying film, striving to be a more expensive version of “Man With the Golden Gun.”
Moore could have made a graceful exit then, but noooo . . . ! He had to be laughed out the door, after an extra layer of make-up and a sexual encounter with Grace Jones. Nice one, Roj !

Even though I wasn't allowed to go see it, I did collect some pretty cool stickers from Shredded Wheat cereal boxes at the time! The scene at the end where Bond hangs onto the plane as it takes off and twirls through the air trying to throw him off is simply breath-taking. It's just such a completely nuts thing to do and every time I watch it I find myself biting my nails, hoping that he doesn't lose his grip. Hanging onto the roof of a plane at god knows how many thousand feet? WTF? (and yes, I know it's just a movie). Classic.

Moonraker might have worked, because it was done well before the actual space shuttles took off and people viewed the space station etc for mildly realistic. Lois Chile played a reasonable modern woman and "Jaws" ... had some fans, I guess. Where Moonraker fell short, was the ... short villain, Hugo Drax, and this is, where Octopussy caught up.

The railway scenes for this picture were filmed at the Nene Valley Railway, a preserved railway near Peterborough in England.
I visited at about the time they were filming there, and it was bizarre to see a small British country station, Water Orton, with station signs proclaiming it to be Karl Marx Stadt. More recently I visited Chemnitz (which is what Karl Marx Stadt is called now) and the large station with many tracks is about as different from Water Orton as you can imagine.
I remember seeing a pile of smashed-up Mercedes cars, which were presumably used in the stunt where the car is thrown up into the air by the train. There was also a large hydraulic or compressed-air cylinder by the side of the track, which was used to throw the cars in the air for this stunt. And of course there was a Mercedes on rail wheels, as well as rail wagons marked up for Octopussy’s circus.

Having said that, I still think is one of the best Bond films, if not the best one. Sure it's campy but there are scenes that nail James Bond as a character. When he goes to the auction and bids on the egg just to see how interested Kamal Khan is, and then he switches the eggs just in case... M screams at him and tells him he should get to India but he already has the ticket... as he leaves M smiles as if saying "this guy is a fucking wild card but damn he gets the job done". And then, Bond confronts Kamal Khan and straight up puts the egg as collateral for his bet. This scenes tell you how this Roger Moore 007 work. NO violence but straight up confrontation. He lights the fuse, there's no bullshit with him. Also the opening scene is great, that little plane it's still pretty cool, even to this day. We should all appreciate that all this stunts were done for real!

Here's something to ponder. The plot of this movie revolves around a renegade Russian plot to smuggle and detonate a nuclear weapon on an American airbase in Europe to lead to nuclear disarmament. Shortly afterwards a Fredrick Forsythe novel was made into a movie "The Fourth Protocol" (I think) where the Russians try to detonate a nuclear bomb near an American airbase for the same reason. Forsythe novels are not known for their hokey plots, but the fact something from Bond might have inspired or influenced this other movie, which stared future Bond actor Pierce Brosnan, makes me wonder.

People, including myself, may disagree strongly on certain films but you have to be true to yourself & i'd hate to see you change a rating based on others thoughts. After all, opinions are extremely subjective, based on a persons' individual life experience & perception of a topic, which varies widely. You stated the reasoning of your thought process, thats all one can ask for. I thought i'd seen all the bonds yet this looks unfamiliar! Once more unto the breach!

The stunt work is absolutely top-notch, the settings sumptuous, every actor is giving it 110%, and the pace never flags - it is pure entertainment from beginning to end. James Bond must be the only franchise that successfully reboots itself every few films.
