MOONRAKER: Roger Moore: James Bond Revisited

  • James Bond in space! I know, I know - sounds crazy, right? Well, it actually happened back in 1979. In the wake of The Spy Who Loved Me's major box office success, another Bond movie was greenlit, and originally the plan was to do For Your Eyes Only. But then, a little movie called Star Wars came out and the decision was made to compete by making the next 007 flick sci-fi. The result was a Bond film that's often much maligned by fans, but still has its silly charms as we'll discuss in this instalment of James Bond Revisited!

    I must say that Moonraker was the first I saw in the cinema and has a special place in my heart. I know the film gets a panning but it is just Bond at its most over the top and I love the film for that.

    I really like this James Bond movie. Sure, there are some silly moments oh, but it is still well shot. The sky diving opening was awesome, John Barry's score was great, JAWS was fun, and the space special effects were decent.

      this is the Best Bond movie. Nobody can deny this. Critics try to find faults with it but their criticism is not based on quality. You have judge a movie based on its quality and Moonraker was really good. Yes it was obviously heavily inspired from Star Wars but all movies are inspired by some movie. If Moonraker would not have been a good movie it would not been a record breaker which I believe was broken by Goldeneye, a movie released almost 15 years after its release. Those were not the days when hype and publicity alone could drive a movie.

    Excuse me, but wasn't 'You only live twice' about space? Bond was literally ready to pilot the rocket in that film, but was discovered. 'Diamonds are forever' is also about space. The only reason there wasn't more space stuff was the lack of budget. Anyone who says 'Moonraker' was some shocking weird turn away from the established canon is out of his mind. It made perfect sense to introduce a villain who wanted to annihilate humanity from space, and frankly, the scenes in space, accompanied by music from John Barry, were sublime. Thank God they made that film. I absolutely love it, it is a fond childhood memory, and anyone who doesn't appreciate this film probably doesn't even understand what the Bond franchise is about.

    I saw Moonraker in the theater at release, the audience actually cheered at the end of the opening sequence when Bond falls out of the plane, as well as at the conclusion of the film. As cartoonish as it was at times, it delivered what audiences were looking for back then and was one of the most financially successful installments of the series. There were great individual scenes as well, particularly the G-force simulator. Also of note is the scene where Drax unleashes his attack dogs on the woman that Bond had a fling with in Drax's mansion. That was a very effective, even artful sequence as unsettling as any of the death scenes throughout the series.

    Jaws got the prettiest chick in the movie. And Drax had a pile of gorgeous models as his female space crew. I don't think Lois Chiles made it at all as the main Bond girl. She can 't do a sexy role , and have heard her say in interviews she is not really into men(though she has been married), and you could tell in the movie , it seemed there was no feeling/chemistry between her and Roger Moore. One of the better Bond films though, , and the furthest in "camp", even past Golden Gun.

    • @mrjones29
      @mrjones29 Před 3 lety +4

      You are joking right? Lois Chiles was a former supermodel in the 1970s. She was all sexy in Moonraker and one of the sexiest looking Bond girls of them all. And that chemistry you picked up from her performance may have something to do with Lois losing her youngest brother to Cancer at the same time of filming. You gotta know the whole story before slagging someone off.

The silliness as you say is what makes it so fun. Bond even kills a giant snake with a poison pen! I would give this one a solid 8. But keep the reviews coming, thx.

    I kinda an agree with you, but however I liked Moonraker movie because it had a creative storyline. Roger Moore really fit well on James Bond doing a space mission, Lois Chiles really made Holly Goodhead a great Bond girl with some unique traits. Also liked the idea of Jaws turning good at the end because Jaws need to redeem himself. I liked the chase scene with the creative gadgets. Also like some of Roger Moore one liners. The Corinne Dufour scene where she dies from the dogs makes me nervous about dogs in the future. I had wished that Corinne Dufour could have had more scenes in the movie, or some scenes with James Bond, and allowed Bond to help Corinne Dufour escape. Also in Moonraker I liked on how Bond plays detective style to investigate different things. I give this one a 8 out of 10.

    This movie is fantastic! What’s not to love? It has a chillingly sinister plot (mass extermination of humanity), sinister villain (Drax), exotic locations (Venice, South America, umm… SPACE!), humor, amazing action scenes, hell, they brought back Jaws. Roger Moore is in his 4th turn at Bond and has mastered the character completely. Seriously don’t understand where all the hate comes from. It’s entertainment people.

    As a Bond fan, I find this movie frustrating. It could have been the best Bond movie ever. It has some brilliant elements to it. Like Drax, Jaws, the set pieces, the plot etc. But it felt more like a parody of the spy who loved me. I wish they had taken this film more seriously and not gone for cheap laughs and gimmicks. They have wasted the potential of this movie.

    Moonraker is one my favorite Bond movies of all time, it's a perfect movie. I don't know why people find this Bond Film silly..? We have an International Space Station for over 22 years right now since 1998, so the plot could be real. And I love the special mix of locations, Venice, Rio de Janeiro and at the beginning of film the location of the French castle. And I find it's the best Bond film of Roger Moore as 007 after "The spy who loved me".
