I think you would really appreciate their version of Amazing Grace, My Chains are Gone. This is the contemporary version of Amazing Grace and is outstanding. Each person in the group has their moment. It will also move you very much. Thank you for your comments. I predict you will fast become a Pentaholic, as PTX fans call themselves.

The black guy you just noticed is Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable). Matt is a lyric bass. He joined in late 2017 as Avi's replacement. In addition to being the newest member of Pentatonix Matt is also the youngest member, and I'm told that bass voices improve with age. So it's hard to be certain just what Matt's range is because it's still growing. You've already seen the official video of "Hallelujah," with Avi singing the second verse, right? Well I recommend listening to a live feed of "Hallelujah" from their recent world tour. Matt's arrangement of the second verse is different from Avi's, and seems to have been designed to show off his full range. You can find that here: czcams.com/video/ASYzLoi810k/video.html
Matt is also the lead in "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch," and has a beautiful solo in "Sound Of Silence." His voice makes me think of snuggling under a soft, warm blanket, with a purring cat and some really good chocolate.
Celine Dion's part in "The Prayer" is smack in the middle of the sweet spot for Mitch's voice. And poor Scott. Everyone in Pentatonix agrees that Scott is the member who's most likely to forget the lyrics, so don't you know that his voice would be the perfect one for singing Andrea Bocelli's part in this song? No, Scott doesn't speak Italian; he had to memorize this by rote, and he worked very hard to get the pronunciation right. I'm told that he succeeded, though he does have a strong American accent, which was predictable.
I don't know how much Pentatonix pays their set designers, but however much it is it isn't enough. This set is spectacular!

"The Prayer" was one of the songs released on _"Evergreen,"_ Pentatonix's 2021 Christmas album. If you're only encountering Matt now that means that you haven't watched any video Pentatonix has published in the last five years - Matt is coming up on the sixth anniversary of his membership later this year. In other words, he has now been with Pentatonix almost as long as Avi's total tenure with the band.

The new guy is the new bass singer, it's Matt Salee. He joint PTX after Avi Kaplan, the original bass, left mid 2017. In the end of 2017 Matt joined the group.
That is also the only change. Especially Kirstin (or Kirstie) and Mitch are our PTX chameleons, but is always them. Same goes for Kevin and Scott.
You might love to see another side of PTX, so I would say take Daft Punk (a medley), Sing (original), Can't Hold Us (well, you'll see 😉)

Hi, Kings003! As I understand it, their current bass singer Matt (the tall black guy with short-cut hair) is classified as a lyrical bass, while their original bass singer Avi (short white guy with brown beard in "Hallelujah') is known as a basso profundo (meaning profoundly-deep voice.) Both guys are great singers, just in slightly different ways. Matt has wonderful solos in Pentatonix's official videos of "The Sound of Silence" and "Amazing Grace / My Chains Are Gone."
That latter performance is especially moving with the inclusion of the "My Chains Are Gone" chorus, which was written by musician Chris Tomlin a few years ago for a biographical movie about John Newton, "Amazing Grace"'s composer. The video is performed in an outdoor chapel in California and is just breathtaking.
PTX's "The Sound of Silence" is gorgeous, as well; where Simon & Garfunkel sang it in a melancholy tone, and Disturbed sings it with a mixture of sadness and anger, the PTX version is actually uplifting!

Such a wonderful reaction. I really think this cover is a masterpiece! There are other great acapella groups, but Pentatonix has its own lane where they completely dominate. They never let me down! I suggest you watch the “90’s Dance Medley,” “Sound of Silence,” “New Rules/Are You That Somebody,” “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch,” and/or “Attention” to get a really good intro to Matt Sallee who replaced Avi Kaplan in 2017 when Avi went solo.

Their Amazing Grace is phenominal too. Also, their cover of John Lennon's "Imagine" requires a box of tissues. As others have said, Matt Sallee (the second black guy) replaced Avi Kaplan (the original bass). That is the only lineup change in 12 years. I always say, check the date of the video. If it's prior to 2018, the bass will be Avi Kaplan. If the video is 2018 or later, the bass will be Matt. The date you see on an original PTX video is the day it was uploaded.

Arrrg, I keep thinking of more PTX videos that I think you'd like! (This could go on for days.) Their official video covers of "Amazing Grace," "Mary, Did You Know?," and John Lennon's "Imagine" all allow you to hear solos of beatboxer Kevin's sweet tenor voice. And for fun, bouncy goodness, try their official videos of "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" (Matt sings lead in this) and "Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy" (from the Avi era.) They also rap like nobody's business in their cover of "The Ceiling Can't Hold Us."

  • @Badger77722

This video has a couple of surprises in it. The first comes right at the beginning: The Prayer was originally performed as a duet between Celine Dion and Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli. Because Pentatonix has a great female singer (Kirstin Maldonado), people familiar with the original probably expect Kirstin to be singing lead on this song. Surprise! Mitch comes out and absolutely kills the lead for the entire song, singing Celine's part without dropping a beat. Scott sings Andrea's part (hence starting his part out in Italian). Kirstin's big part comes closer to the end, when she and Mitch do a call-and-echo, with Kirstin only hitting a couple of notes higher than Mitch.
Surprise #2 actually comes even sooner than #1: this song, unlike the vast majority of PTX tracks, actually uses multi-tracking (aka over-dubbing, aka layering) of the voices to get a fuller sound for the more "choral" parts of the song. That's not something PTX normally does, but they apparently decided this song needed it.
If you'd like to hear them perform the song without the layering, here's a link to a live performance on The Morning Show: czcams.com/video/i5xMpjBLLuc/video.html

Matt replaced Avi in 2017 I believe when Avi wanted to do his own thing as a solo and reduce the constant hectic performance life. He is doing beautiful work. The arranging is different as their voices are different. Avi is a basso profundo with a lovely soar into baritone and low tenor. Matt is a lyrical bass with extraordinary upper range. Two fab bass singers. They use both men to perfection. You can hear Matt in several videos but you get Matt full on with his showmanship on display in You’re a Mean One Mr Grinch. .. the live performance is pure art.

I would thoroughly recommend watching "The Beginners Guide to Pentatonix". It is NOT a "Behind the Scenes" video, it is just snippets of songs each member in turn sang as solo to introduce that member. It then goes through the history of the group up to the date it was made (a few years ago now) including Avi announcing his leaving and Matt arriving.

  • @margretrosenberg420
    @margretrosenberg420 Před 9 měsíci +3

I recommend watching PTX's "Behind the scenes" and "Making of" videos whenever they're available, though not until after you've heard the songs. There's a wonderful "Behind the Scenes" video for "Bohemian Rhapsody," for instance, and the reason I know about Scott memorizing the Italian words for "The Prayer" by rote is that I saw him working on it in "The Making of Evergreen." It doesn't destroy the magic to see the kind of work and thought Pentatonix puts into their videos, any more than understanding refraction makes a rainbow less beautiful. These videos serve to bring us closer to the band and make their music feel more personal.
