  • The second episode of Enemy Analysis.
    Unsurprisingly, the focus of the Boss Analysis series has been on... bosses. Big Bosses, Tiny Bosses, Bosses with low health, Pathetic Final Bosses, you name it.
    But over all the attention I've lavished upon the biggest threats in gaming, their underlings are starting to feel a little left out. But I'm only too happy to change that, though they might not like exactly HOW I'm going to go about it...
    Today, I talk about my most hated Legend of Zelda enemy ever. Er, most hated for gameplay-related reasons, to be more specific.

    I should point out that there is a shop that sells the Magical Shield for 90 Rupees, lower than 130. That's as low a price as it can go. Not to mention Moblins that give you free Rupees, even as high as 100, saying they're 'a secret to everybody'.

    Zelda 2 had a lot of painful enemies too (Hate Blue Fokkas and Moas!) but unlike the original you could elude them. In original far too often the doors would lock or a block protecting a staircase would refuse to be pushed until all enemies are defeated. And Zelda 2 doesn't have enemies that eat your shield or curse you so you can't swing your sword. Just ones who drain your XP...

    • @metaridley2911
      @metaridley2911 Před 9 měsíci +5

      Blue Fokkas I get, but Blue Iron Knuckles, not so much. They fire sword beams (or knives?), sure, but they're easily blocked by the shield if you pay attention to where they're swinging and well-timed jump strikes can make quick work of them. Personally, my vote for worst enemy were Red Dairas from that same game. Capable of cutting through your shield and having similar movement AI to Iron Knuckles means they're tough to fight and avoid unless you're going in the opposite direction from them.
      Not as powerful as either of your choices, sure, but at the point you face them, they are basically the scourge of that game.

      @@metaridley2911 Probably doesn't help that you need the hammer and the raft to get the reflect spell if I'm not mistaken, meaning that empowering your shield with the reflect magic so you can block axes isn't even possible this early.

    There's a room in 2nd Quest (I think the 5th Dungeon?) that's just a spiral. It has like 10 of these bastards in there.
    There is no way to avoid anything here. In addition, I think there's Like-Likes in the dungeon too.
    The only way I ever got past that room was to get a lucky Clock drop.

    Blue wizzrobes are certainly annoying sure, but if you play the Second Quest, it's far more likely that you'll grow to hate Blue Darknuts and Red Bubbles more. Blue Darknuts are simpler than Blue Wizzrobes, but these bastards are damn near everywhere in the later dungeons, and you will inevitably have to fight through rooms of 12 every other time, or even worse: get trapped in a dead-end and be forced to fight your way out. You will particularly grow to hate how obnoxiously defensive and aggresive they are. It's to the point that experienced players, even with the Magical Sword, tend to not bother and instead try to blow them up. Red Bubbles are like regular Bubbles... except that they **permanently remove your sword.** You can get it back by touching a Blue Bubble or drinking medicine, but have fun doing that while getting attacked by Wizzrobes and Darknuts!

    I actually think Zelda 1 has aged better than nearly every other NES game. Oh it’s definitely archaic as heck but I find it more enjoyable to play than most games of the era. But those evil, evil Blue Wizzrobes made Level 6 a nightmare to complete, even with rewinds on NSO. They just spam them in every single room and expect you to get past them when other enemies are after you, narrow walls trap you and Bubbles fly around to remove your ability to stab for a few seconds. They could’ve easily fixed it by allowing us to attack them from a safe distance with arrows or even the Magic Rod, but no! They’re IMMUNE. Completely unfair enemy design further compounded by bad level design.

    One interesting mitigating factor to the Blue Wizzrobes is that you don't have to stay and fight the vast majority of them. Most encounters there's some way to skip fighting in the room all together. There's 1 encounter of I think 6 at once (nothing else) that you have to do and that's the most there ever is at once for a mandatory fight.

  • @hoodedman6579
    @hoodedman6579 Před 9 měsíci

    As someone who has beaten both quests of Zelda 1 swordless, the Wizzrobes are the absolute worst in the first quest. They're notable for being the only enemies as far as I remember that are immune to the handle of the Magic Wand; to all others, it basically functions as a White Sword. As a result, you must kill them with bombs instead, which can be very frustrating when you're stuck with such a limited supply. You have to hit each blue one with 3 bombs to kill them too, which is more than most other enemies. Blue Darknuts can also be pretty awful until you get the Magic Wand, especially since they can block bomb damage (but still act as if they are getting damaged by it) in a weird way, but are a complete joke after you have the wand (at least by swordless standards).
    Hilariously, the 2nd quest is actually way easier swordless than the first, as not only can you get the Magic Wand and Magic Key very early, but there's only one room in the entire quest where you are required to fight Blue Wizzrobes (and any Wizzrobes at all, I think, but it's not like fighting just Red Wizzrobes would be hard), and that comes very late when you almost certainly have 16 bombs, but also just blocks an item so if you do it once you're good forever (unlike some rooms in the first quest that you may need to get past repeatedly). There are plenty you need to run past but that's a billion times easier than killing them.

    @jayceofspades7195 Před 9 měsíci

    This variation was also in the later dungeons of the Oracle games, but at least there's a few things to make them easier. Free movement, long sword swipes instead of stabs, the ability to jump over their magic, and the fact they don't actually disappear as they float around: just turn transparent so you'll know where they are at all times. Agree with you though, these guys in the original are heccing annoying.

    I'd say my least favourite enemies in Zelda would be Four Swords' version of the darknuts. They only lower their guard when attacking. Aside from having high durability, they often appear in groups and are rather fast. Not a fan of the design either, they look rather underwhelming compared to previous and later versions of darknuts and iron knuckles.
    The cherry on top is that you're constantly being timed throughout every stage and few things make me want to speedrun a game less than enemies that I need to counterattack acting inconsistently.

    On a swordless run, they're even more of a pain. The only reliable way to take them out that doesn't use consumables (bombs) is melee hits with the magic wand. Problem is, the way to get the wand in the 1st quest is to bomb your way through OTHER blue wizz-d1cks AND walls in the right dungeon. (I believe it was the 6th) Enemies I hate? More like MEGA-LOATHE.
    Also, avoid the magic book like the bubonic plague. The fires it creates with the wand hurt you more than your enemies in the long run. Why in the name of all that is freakin' holy they decided to make it so your own fires hurt you, I'll never understand.

    If you didn’t like zelda 1, what do you think of crystalis? In my opinion this is a better game like zelda than zelda 1 on the NES. Because for one the control is not completely rigid like zelda 1. 2. The story and challenge feels better in my opinion. The only things that suck are that the third to last dungeon deserves to be in worst levels ever. And the game is a bit cryptic.

    Oh boy if you hated that enemy, you must really hate the blue dark knights or the blue fokkas you find in the last Temple in Zelda 2. Those bastards suck for the same reasons we hate the blue wizrobes but really its the fokkas you will hate here.

    I don't feel like the original Zelda aged very well. People might complain that modern games do too much 'hand-holding' but I think I'd rather have that than no idea what you're supposed to do. Between hiding secrets in completely unmarked and unremarkable locations, cryptic clues that leave more questions than answers, items that have functions that aren't explained in any way, and spots you might have no idea what to do with at all unless you happen to have a specific item you have no other need for, it kind of feels like the player experience wasn't considered at all. I don't even have that much problem with the gameplay in particular, it's the design philosophy I don't care for.
    Zelda 2 is...not significantly better, IMO. It has the same obtuseness problems, compounded by slow text that has messages that either did not translate well or just weren't written well, and has a difficulty level that borders on absurd, combined with a 'continue' mechanic that requires tedious retreading.
    To be fair, though, most early versions have roughness. When lessons are learned and applied to future installments, that makes the early roughness worth it. And often the ideas are sound, it's just a matter of execution.

      Yeah, the NES had involved experimental handling to say the least, and it shows its age as a result. The SNES library still has its own issues, but at least games like Link to the Past and Secret of Evermore got a handle on what they were doing, and this is keeping in mind that I'm particularly interested in the upcoming Super Mario RPG remaster because it shows it's going to update core gameplay like Pac-Man World Re-Pac did, when I actually wouldn't have minded SMRPG remaster keeping the same old blatant imbalances and whatnot even if it wouldn't convince me to buy a Switch. In all honesty? I think game design should start to learn to standardize TLC.
      In regard to Zelda, LTTP added a chargeup attack in the spin attack, so that right there is a MAJOR improvement. It's also surprisingly overall fair to Minimalist/No Damage Running aside from a few cheap moments of potential RNG spike or other overwhelming idiocy. Bosses still have hit-or-miss gameplay design, but overall does still have Helmasaur King and Kholdstare at the very least aging well and does still have boss design be more methodical in general. Oh, and yes, as you pointed out, the puzzle solving is actually improved, and it especially helps to make Gargoyle's Domain my favorite dungeon in LTTP.
      Oh, and Wizzrobes in LTTP? They aren't the cheap nightmares that they are in both NES Zeldas. Granted, they are practically junk mooks, but at least we don't have either what this video shows, or random telefragging mixed with a God damned spell cast requirement.
      Still, good point about lessons and all that at the end.

      As someone who played the game for the first time recently, I think it aged a lot better than most people think. It's just that the game is designed for you to play with the manual alongside it. For example, the manual shows a "?" on many of the screens that have secrets, explains what the items do, hints where the next dungeons are, etc.
      I did get stuck a few times (feeding the Goriya in level 7, bombing into a room that isn't on the map in level 7, and finding the tree for level 8), but I managed to beat it without having to resort to a walkthrough.

    0:16 I think the closest you came to featuring the original Legend of Zelda (until now, of course) is featuring the Legend of Zelda section in Abobo's Big Adventure (if I remember correctly)
