The truth about Iowa women's basketball is that they are currently the number one draw for fans. All of their home games are sold out. For their road games, their opponents are selling out or at least drawing multiple times as many fans as normal. This game, for example, attendance was 18,660, a sell-out. For Ohio State's other ten home games this season, average attendance was 5,668.

I think you are making too much of one game, an overtime game at that, against a team I considered to be the favorite to win the Big Ten title this season. Remember that Iowa had a 12 point lead on the road in the fourth quarter. That they could not hold off Ohio State means they are vulnerable. But having such a lead in the fourth quarter means they are also a threat to anyone.

I never claimed that Iowa's non-conference schedule was particularly difficult, but neither was it it the cupcake which some some commentators claimed. Kansas State's current rankings are #4 (AP) and #8 NET). Iowa is the only team to have beaten Kansas State thus far. Virginia Tech's current rankings are #19 (AP) and #18 (NET).
Overall the Big Ten strikes me as weaker this season than it was last season, which surprises me because I had thought several teams had improved their rosters in ways that have yet to show themselves in actual games. I have no trouble saying that UCLA's schedule thus far has been tougher than Iowa's. But I will note that at present, Iowa has more neutral site wins than anyone else.
But all of that misses my basic point. MaxPower247 is prone to these grandiose generalities and exhibits less than objective assessments of his favorite teams. Iowa (#2) loses an overtime road game to Ohio State (#18) and the Hawkeyes are "exposed" as "not top tier". UCLA (#2) loses an overtime road game to Utah (#16). I am simply asking when the negative analysis of UCLA is going to come?

Iowa had national player of the year Megan Gustafson just two years before Clark arrived, as well as Kathleen Doyle. The talent pool in Iowa and the surrounding states is incredibly deep, and all the 12-14 year old girls in that region currently worshiping Clark will undoubtedly produce some amazing talent that will want to follow in her footsteps in the next four to six years. Iowa will have no trouble remaining very relevant

You don't copy somebody else but you do get inspired by their skills. Caitlin was not born with the ability to do what she does. Those who have never worked with elite athletes think that the great players are merely gifted with talent. What they do not see is that 99% of the time the great players have worked harder, smarter, and more diligently developing their talents. The very best spend enormous amounts of time learning and perfecting the skills that separate them from all the other players. It is usually only a few skills that separate the all time greats from the average high level players. Unfortunately these few skills take a tremendous commitment to learn and very very few individuals put in the practice to master them. Most athletes when they reach a certain skill level focus on practicing those skills that make them look good. It takes a special athlete to focus on the skills they don't yet have, and put in the tireless hours learning them. By seeing the things that Caitlin has put the work in for, junior girl players who worship her the barometer has now been set on the things they need to develop. How many girls do you think were actively practicing (as in every day for hours) long range three point jump shots before Caitlin? Zero. How many are starting to practice this now? A lot. This happens in every sport as the once unthinkable becomes the possible. Before the first four minute mile was run this was considered impossible. When Pete Sampras won fourteen grand slam titles it was thought to be unreachable, and now Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic have all eclipsed that mark. And I am so tired of the myth that Caitlin can't play defense. Maybe other conferences like the SEC are known for good defense mainly because they are bad shooters? You see it isn't so simple is it? If Caitlin's defense is so bad, could you please list ten games over the past four years where the girl she was assigned to guard just lit up the scoreboard? How about five specific games? Ok, how about three? @@jjx1207

Also hannah/kate having a bad game during OSU game really killed iowa. I was also surprised on how much CC was passing in the second half. Usually in these situations she takes 30+ shots but her night ended at 24 which i found very surprising. I agree with you but it's somewhat debatable. Like you mentioned they destroyed Indiana and Indiana is a decent team. But the OSU loss, even though it was in OT, was still pretty decisive with an 8 point margin at the end.
And the Hawkeyes do have a weaker schedule. It feels like a down year for the Big Ten. Iowa also barely beat Michigan State at home.
Iowa really doesn't have a great supporting cast around Caitlin. I think they're sucessful similar to Lebron's Cavs in 2007 or Dwight Howard's Magic in 2009, because they have several role players built around a superstar. They are a good team but don't have what it takes to win it all. The talent Iowa has outside of Caitlin is very average. Kate Martin is averaging double figures for the first time but she depends on Caitlin's creativity. Bluder has just begun to trust Hannah Stuelke which is baffling to me because she seems the most capable helping Clark. They just don't have that consistent 2nd option like Monika Czinano.

Yep, The Law Firm of Czinano and Clark is what got them so far last year. Nobody's filled Czinano's shoes. Same with McKenna Warnoch leaving. The rest of the current team is just average, but it might tend to appear that way from being so outshined by a luminary like Clark. But I would be really surprised if they got to the sweet sixteen, if that. Just the way it is.

  • @RichardII_Lionheart
    @RichardII_Lionheart Před 4 měsíci +5

The Hawkeyes are my team to root for, and I do. But I try to be as objective as possible. Iowa's roster consists of Caitlin Clark, whom I consider to be the best active college player and one of the very best in NCAA history, and a slew of good, but not outstanding players, each of whom brings skills to the court, but also limitations. For whatever reason, Iowa has never been successful recruiting multiple highly ranked players out of high school. Just compare the high school player rankings for Iowa's roster with the rosters of Connecticut, Louisiana State, and South Carolina. This immediately puts them at a talent disadvantage.
Still, Iowa has proved to be a very dangerous team which no opponent dares to take lightly. In some ways, Iowa has been better this season than last, when they made it to the national title game. But it is a stretch for me to expect another Final Four appearance. If they do make it that far, the reason will doubtless be they have Caitlin Clark and their opponents do not.

Richard, think how good Iowa would have been had Ava Jones not been in that crippling accident. She was at least a 4 star player until a drunk driver drove right into her family while in Louisville for an AAU tournament. I doubt that she will ever shoot a basket after all of her ligaments were torn in both knees and she got a TBI from it. I'm sure she had other injuries, but these will cripple her the most. Iowa would have really done well again this year as well as the next 3 years with her, because she would have been another large draw for women's basketball. What is so impressive about Iowa is that knowing she may never play, they never took away her scholarship, and for me, that was the right thing to do. After all, we are Iowa, and that's how we roll.

It is difficult to know what a healthy Ava Jones might have contributed as a freshman. She has some height at 6'2" but was listed at 150 pounds. That's pretty thin for 6'2" whether playing the wing or, especially, the post. It appears from video that she had some basic moves in the post and a pretty decent mid-range jump shot, but there was no clue there about the extent of her effective range. Alas, we will never know.

As John McEnroe famously said in a different context: "You cannot be serious!"
The fact that the game went to overtime is irrelevant only in terms that one team ended up with a win versus a loss. It is not irrelevant in terms of which team (both really) could have won in regulation.
Your supposed "better truth" is true only in a wildly hypothetical way. That game I can play just as well as you. Cotie McMahon had not just a season high, but a career high with 33 points. Had she scored her season average rather than her career high, Ohio State would have lost rather badly in regulation. If Clark and McMahon had both scored their season averages (31 and 13 respectively) Iowa would have won convincingly in regulation. If Clark and McMahon had both scored their season lows (21 and 1 respectively) Iowa would have won convincingly in regulation.
But games are not won or lost by an "if...then" dynamic of hypothetical propositions based on hypothetical "facts". The truth for this particular game is that Ohio State played better than Iowa and won a tight, contested game at home in front of a record home crowd. This did not particularly surprise me. By definition, an OT game means both teams had chances to win. No matter how you pretzel your logic, Clark scored 45 points (on a mediocre 7-18 from 3 by the way) , and her team lost by 8. Clark scored, what? Over 35 points in regulation, and the team tied a solid, but not spectacular OSU team. These are the facts that on one hand, you seem to promote and relish. Yet how interesting that you can chastise me with seeming arrogance for my "if" scenario and then engage in a series of speculatory "could" and "ought" scenarios, and think that faulty logic proves your argument. By your poor logical sequencing,, Clark "could" have hit one more FT and would have won in regulation, or she "ought" to have scored 54 points and they'd have won in overtime.

You are arguing against a statement I never made, which suggests either an unwilling deficit in reading comprehension or a willingness to misstate and mischaracterize what someone else has written. But even then your argument actually proves my point. An overtime game, almost by definition, could have gone either way in regulation. My own hypotheticals were clearly labeled as such and were intended to show the idiocy of what I took to be your attempt at serious, and seriously flawed, argument.

I think all the points are valid, Iowa did get lucky with playing the teams they did up until the final four last year (with Georgia being the toughest team for them until the SC game)
The one argument i would say is that a team still needs to bank on a high octane offense to keep pace, or a wonderful defense to stop Iowa. K-State won through a defense, and Ohio State through offense. Not a lot of teams can match those qualities, or execute ar the level when playing with the pressure of the best player and more faces watching then normal.

Yes they outran South Carolina because the Iowa girls were in much better shape for running. SC game strategy all year was to jack up a brick then have three players bouncing up and down like jumping jacks rebounding and putting back additional shots. The main way Iowa beat SC offensively was isolating them into a two on two game with Clark and Czinano running the pick and roll. Boston tried to switch onto Clark but was simply too slow to match Clark’s speed. If they doubled Clark Czinano broke to the basket for an easy layup.

You screaming does not make your analysis intelligent; IT IS NOT !!! And remember, Foghorn, IOWA was 10 up on Ohio State shortly before the refs started calling fouls on IOWA every time Cotie bulldozed her way to the basket. There is a reason you have less than 2 K subscribers. Try speaking softly and do it after you perform a more in depth analysis. Consider, did IOWA expose South Carolina last year? Here you had an LSU freshman hit 42 point on 15 of 50 shooting which is 75% from the field in regulation and not a mention by this institutions of her prowess. That’s one terrific performance but Clark has put together four unprecedented years of performances. Setting records nobody else will come close to. You’re fixated on something Clark can’t control and you’re so obviously obsessed with this that it is truly sad. She is promoted because she is once in a lifetime talent. I’ve never seen in my life one player in a team sport move the needle compared to her peers as much as she has. This hurts you which is obvious. Also promoting Clark helps all the teams in the NCAA including yours. A mature person would celebrate what her popularity is doing for the sport and for all the young women of all backgrounds who play D1 basketball. Money and attention are pouring into the sport largely because of Clark. Girls in youth basketball are seeing the insane things she is capable of and it raises the bar of expectations that they have for themselves. This will enrich the sport for a generation to come. I’m black. And honestly, her popularity is not because of her skin color. She is a flat out baller. And the things she is doing is bringing positive attention to the woman’s game. It reminds me of when Stephon Curry was at Davidson. He too was heavily promoted and rightly so. And it had nothing to do with ‘the way he looked’. He was bringing immense attention to the college game because of his insane talent. And Clark is doing the same. Does she push off, yep. Does she get calls on ticky tack fouls, yep. Not her issues. That’s on the refs. Remember, Michael Jordan got a lot of calls too. Ask any older Knicks fan. But there’s no denying her talent and gifts. But the video was acknowledging that the team is not as good as the pundits are saying and I agree. They can’t play defense and that will hurt them when they play offensively gifted teams. By the way, I think you meant 15 of 20.

You are so right but 100% wrong. No one in the basketball power structure cares about your opinion or analysis. The asset owners by hook or crook will have Clark in the final four and most likely the championship game. They are going to set up the tournament and arrange refs to ensure they get their money maker in position to keep loading up their tournament pockets. If Paige doesn't get hurt UConn will be the likely tournament opponent the other two teams in the final four will likely be coached by white males. I said that before the season even started. These institutions the NCAA, ESPN, Media and WNBA promote the players, teams and programs they feel will serve their buying audience and will maximize profits. They can make mega dollars positioning those two assets Iowa and UConn in the championship game. They not tolerating no more predominantly black teams in the championship round so SC and LSU can forget that dream. These institutions don't want the SEC in the conversation. If it's not looking like Iowa and UConn in the equation then it's going to disturb the cash flow. Yep SC is the best team hands down but if they want Catlin or Paige sporting that ring it's going to happen by any means necessary. If by happen stance SC finds a way to smash Iowa or UConn after 50 fouls then so be it. They'll will spend the next year smashing SC and trashing their name, their characters and accusing them of ungodly things. Capitalism is a cut throat, low down dirty underhanded game. Anyone who gets in the way of Catlin's March to glory will pay way more than price of admission that LSU paid last season they will be destroyed. It's market manipulation and there is no market on earth that is not manipulated by capitalist 😂.
