+Off The Starboard Hull - Hi Scott and Laurie - SD60's are fine - we got them started today out of the water. It has been a bit frustrating and when all was done and dusted we discovered the props were in counter rotation, so ... changing brackets out tomorrow and hoping to get wet. Enough of that though - loving your vids and love to see more of you two who have been chatting to us all along the way. I admire the sailors who can produce vids every two weeks - we don't seem to be those people! Happy sailing guys - we are keeping an eye out for you and sure many folks around the world are going to enjoy your shares ... cheers for now :) Brent and Ana

      Hi Brent and Ana -
Having the props in the wrong rotation after you thought the job was done does sound frustrating. Hope you can get in the water tomorrow.
We love watching your videos - your lifestyle is one we hope to follow - it will be a real change to slow down and enjoy an ever changing array of breathtaking anchorages.
We are trying to put out a video every week, but it had been 3 weeks since the last one. Not sure how we will do once we are traveling. We will see.
Fair winds and hope to meet up with you at some point.

Great video. I have not even been sailing yet but I own a 5.2 fibreglass and play inland and occasionally out to close shores. Getting more interested in sailing the more I watch. Need to do a sampler holiday to see if the reality of it is as good as the fantasy. Thanks for making this, you will never know if you have saved a life by making it but I am sure you will have one day somehow, good man.

      Saving lives?
I have not cured cancer, all this stuff is fairly common amongst the sailing community, how its used is as important and having it onboard.
If you have the kit on your boat know how it works and keep up to date with by practicing.

We bought a 2015 450. It was the owner's 3rd Lagoon and he ordered it with some mods that he had learned from owning the previous models. Sailed it last month from PR to West Palm for some mods and will be bringing it to its home in New Bern, NC. Learning to be an electrician, plumber, elctronics installer etc :) (as you know). We appreciate your content and will stay tuned for more.

I really like how you have multiple points of redundancy on your vessel...awesome! Whatever you do, however, do not become complacent. The best thing to have out in the open seas is the ability to troubleshoot when caca hits the fan. I.e. a something hits your rudder or puts a hole in your boat...do you have a way and the ability to calmly remedy the situation short of abandoning the vessel.

    • @offthestarboardhull8913
      @offthestarboardhull8913  Před 5 lety

If I had a total destruction of both hulls, my inflatable, and my life raft That would be hard to handle.
There is so much more to consider than just the logistics of the the systems on the boat.
Everything you do to help is like dropping a coin in the piggy bank.
The coins can come from a variety of places.
Not only is it reasonable to have a prepared boat but also a prepared skipper and crew.
Most horror stories you read about almost always come from a situation that should have been avoided.
Do not sail in Hurricane zones, don’t sail from a good anchorage because your guests arrive in 2 days, don’t be sucked into the harbour chat regarding weather.
If you have common sense and time you should rarely be in any situation that makes you uncomfortable and or at risk.
Almost 3 years out and we have seen 30 knots twice and both time we were vert close to shore so we dropped the anchor and waited it out.
The second time was 4 days ago.
When you are out cruising the world the general shape of most boats is good but there are about 25% that are disasters waiting to happen.
Whether it’s the boats condition, the captains condition or both.
When I refer to the both I mean we sailed from Mexico with about 50 boats, in the Group was an old man in a piece of shit boat and going solo.
He did not make it, no sign of the old guy and no one was that surprised.
2 other boats were crap and they called MayDay enroute and were saved by other boats.
So the wrap up it’s not just the equipment onboard it’s the ability to use and the mind set of everyone onboard.
      Cheers

Interesting take on GPS, but even with all those ways to receive a GPS fix you should still route plan with a set of paper charts. Look at Vestas Wind's grounding during last years VOR, the nav completely missed the reef because of the zoom level he was using on the electronic charts, but that reef was easy to see on the paper chart of that area. Plotters are great, but paper lets you see the big picture as you plan. I'm also surprised you don't have a sextant, if for nothing else than to learn a new skill.

Scott I think you make a good point. I plan to use paper charts to dead reckon as a backup to electronic GPS. A simple lightning storm can take out all of those GPS units. I think using charts is a must when going offshore. If he's just coastal cruising he should be ok, but to each his or her own :-) Peace and blessings...

I can't help myself, I have to add one story. Wife and I had many discussions about the need to carry a weapon and eventually decided it was worth the risk. Anyways the story...In some foreign ports we decided to not declare the weapon (9mm handgun) and we would hide it where we thought inspectors would not ever look...the oven. Before undertaking a passage to the Dominican Republic, where we were spend some time and have wife's parents meet us there for some R&R, the gun was stored in it's secret hiding place (the oven). After going thru the process of sailing into a new country where the inspectors came aboard and then meeting up with the family that just flew in from the states we began to make supper for everyone. We totally forgot to remove the gun from the oven as we began to make oven baked snacks before the big meal. Before this incident I was very proud of my Rosewood grips on my Berretta 9mm, not so much any more. And no, the ammo did not explode. Just my pride.

Greetings and thanks for the video. I see we share a lot as far as safety is concerned. I have a lot of redundancy on my own boat, yes even the spray that is not for bears :) . Particularly thankful for showing the thermal camera. Good idea!. So my actual boat is now for sale and am thinking of getting a Lagoon, on which I plan to save a space for a workshop as you have..so here's my question: how did that work out for you in terms of loading all that weight on the port bow? Did you do anything to ballance it on the other side, or do you store the heavier stuff there to keep even?. Thanks for any insight you can give me on this, and happy sailing to you both., Cheers Jose

    • @offthestarboardhull8913
      @offthestarboardhull8913  Před 8 lety

      Hey Vid,
First off lets get this off the plate; if I was to be in the market right now I would buy another Lagoon.
If money was no object it would be the new 42, if money was a concern it would be a used owners version 400S2.
That said my boat is loaded and yes the port hull is in the water 1 inch more than the starboard hull.
I have taken heavy items out of the workshop and put them under the Starboard hull bed, the results were marginal.
This brings me back to why i bought my 400S2, this boat still sails well loaded, I have sailed with 3 Leopards, a 48, 44 and the new 40.
My fat loaded Cat lead the pack. I have to add that I own every sail known to man and I am not lazy, I put out and trim everything I have onboard.
I find that it is very easy to reach 6 and 7 knots, beyond that i need wind and trim becomes crucial, 9 knots happens often 12 and 13 knots not so much.
I think because the loading was done a bit at a time i have not noticed much difference but my gut tells me if this boat was empty it would perform better, that said I'm cruising in comfort and no regrets.
Hope this helps, if your serious about the Lagoon we can get into the details if you like.
Make up 10 well thought out questions and a video would arrive custom ordered.
      Cheers
      Scott and Laurie
