Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Atari 2600) - Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN)

- The Nerd faces the horror of a bad video game for his Halloween that he wishes he could cut apart with a chainsaw, as he reviews the Atari 2600 game based on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. This is Angry Video Game Nerd Episode 35.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is considered one the greatest and most influential slasher films of all time. Although it was a big hit, it was also very controversial being banned in numerous countries for its excessive violence. Throughout the years, the chainsaw wielding maniac known as Leatherface would go on to become a classic horror icon.
In 1983 a game based on the movie was released by Wizard Video Games for the Atari 2600. It was one of the first horror movie video games and allowed the player to control Leatherface as he ran through a field brutally murdering young women. It was nearly as controversial as the film and many game stores hid it behind the counter or refused to carry it at all. Its poor success has made it one of the most sought after Atari games.
In part one of the Nerd's second annual Halloween special, he purchases the game from a local seller for a review. After that he meets his most "far-out fan," is captured by the Leatherface family and gets forced to play through even more of the mad and macabre, doo-doo diarrhea bulls**t of that sucky ass game.

"I'll tell ya hwut... yeah, it's still a hunnerd dollars."
This old man is my hero.
Well, shucks! Yuck yuck he he he!
That farmer dude was awesome.
its james father I think :)
No, its an actor
I think the beep means you are moving it wrong.
I thought so too! But the credits confirm he's not. XP By name, at least, I mean.
Its still a hundred dollars
"I tell you what.."
"Yeah what?" *Reaches to pick up game*
"Yeah its still $100." LOL
In your comment, you can delete the "a" and the "Dollars" before and after the "$100" respectively. Having "$100" alone is correct.
+Mistress Bedlam be quiet honey
Terry Cinco No.
+Mistress Bedlam yes
LOL, yes. I love AVGNs reaction. "Ah, what the fuck, man!?"
All the acting is incredible in this. This is probably my favorite episode.
+dannyphehe I love these older Halloween specials with extra characters.
my favorite also
*****
Hell yeah, let's bang.
it's one of his bests for sure. a classic epsiode
dpsrbi Agreed. This is hilarious.
7:00. If you know the Texas Chainsaw Massacre's crazy hippie character, you have to appreciate the way Mike Matei plays the role here. He's really something. Generally, I think he gives a lot to the AVGN show.
Yeah, and not just when he's on screen. Mike's also a big part of the behind the scenes stuff in each AVGN video.
The hippie is "Chop Top".
@@OMA2k not any more
@@terrencecoccoli524 Well, it was true when I wrote that
i watched this before my slasher genre kick, and thought it was an original character.
Ill tell you what....yea its still 100 dollars lol
aw what the fuck man.. you just said.
he's one of the best actors in nerd series
Why did I read this in Hank Hill's voice?
That’s such a rip off lol
God dang that shit had me laughing so hard!!! 😂😂😂😂
You know what's crazy? At the beginning, the man selling games gave James an absolute deal. What he said about that game is totally true, and totally worth it. In fact, both those games are worth several times what he sold them for. Try buying them online if you don't believe me. With the case, it sells for...$300 dollars. Just like the man says. Halloween...sells for even more. That man was fucking legit.
Prices of retro games shot up, they were cheaper in 2007 (I collected then) but $150 for both would have been about par for the course at the time. $150 for both would be on the cheap side now though. Actually that copy of Halloween was bought on eBay, I don't recall the exact price it sold for off the top of my head but I followed the auction.
VixXstazosJOB "overprized"
Sam Rosenbalm dam
@Sarah's Riding The Storm Wave. forehead
Oh god you're totally right, it's like they researched it or even actually bought it before writing their text for the episode.
1:55
"Whatcha got here?"
"A buncha sheeit..."
Best intro ever.
Thanks betch boi! He he he yuck yuck!
"I got a friend named Lester"
Lester the unlikely?
Alex Fraser That would be very unlikely.
Cairil Yakup
touche
Moe
Walter
Lester the unlikable
some say leatherface is still stuck on that bike
In the original version Leatherface spins around with his chainsaw like a maniac while one of the main characters (Sally) escapes on a pickup truck.
James has done a lot of throwbacks over the years. Showing Leather on the bike after ten years would be the icing on the cake.
I guess they couldn't find a wheelchair for that part
Dam almost ten years
Dusty Jack how’s he been living any walk by or
Drive
11:16 that delivery on the “Ooohhh...SHEEUT” line never fails to crack me up hahaha.
I really liked the hippy. Mike can really play a psychotic character
Cosmo Kramer I love this character so much but I always wondered how come he would burn a wire hanger and scratch his head lol
It’s chop top a character from the sequel to Texas chainsaw massacre
@@GrowlingMudkipz in the movie he burns his scalp and pick bits of flesh and eats it just so ya know
It helps when you've killed a few ppl LOL
"Hippie" is spelled with an IE, not a Y
By far Mike's best acting
DrDizzleFrizzle wasn't he leatherface?
Daniel 316 he was the hippie Nerd Fan
MasuMasu and leatherface according to the credits
I'd say The Joker was the best character he played.
JustinEvitable80 What about the Lion?
ironically $150 for these two games would be a sweet deal
Midorii because of the hang glider part
But back in 07 that was a lot for those two games because retro gaming wasn’t as popular as it is now
@@professionalmoron1565 Yes, it was just a fringe interest, a bit like finding PS3 / Xbox 360 / Wii games in yard sales *now* in 2023. But $150 for both would have been eBay pricing (or near it) back then, or it would have been pretty close. There _were_ still collectors around, but very few of them (comparatively.)
LOL . That stereotypical texan was hilarious
As a fellow Texan, Texan stereotypes are always hilarious.
The entire "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" franchise was practically BUILT on Texan stereotypes.
Same
that dude is actually a play on one of the characters from texas chainsaw massacre
I tell you whut
I tell you what!
ya what?
its still a $100
ROFL
I believe you meant to say ROLFE*
:D
JAMES ROFL
!!
Come on! what the fuck man? :D :D from the movie...
The Nerd's most "Far out Fan" perfectly represents the internet community today.
Of course!
guess shit never changes in society
DeathGamingXP damn straight.
It’s a parody of Chop Top from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2
VoodooRaisins 11qss
lol I love Mike. I actually didn't know he was the hippie. Such a good actor. I love how James looks genuinely afraid, like there's a creeper in his house and he needs to talk really calmly to not make him angry. lol, gold acting.
The hippie is called choptop
"Right on my ball"
+AllEndsWithYou "Play the fucking game or I'll burn your fucking eyeballs out!"
The Hillbilly has me dying....."yuck yuck yuck he he he .......yeah booooy". Lol!
lmao!!! me too!!!
Hes the best
The laugh almost makes him sound possessed or something.
I know that was hilarious
"Yeah boy" face will be my avatar
Almost 10 years later I'm still watching this episode on October. This is a Classic AVGN episode.
How 'bout now?
As much as I love the fact that James has evolved so much with the editing and content, I love these old episodes. They just seem more real and authentic. Or, maybe it's just nostalgia.
Say no to the great Reset
@@julianborges1569 why do you think we're all getting nostalgia?
Same. I think its the older equipment and the way they were made back then. And some of it is nostalgia.
Sadly, I wouldn't say evolving is the right word. 😮💨
@Marzalification he worked with what he had, and enjoyed every minute of it.
IMO this is still the best nerd episode ever.
Mike is hilarious as the hippy and the end where leatherface gets stuck on the bike is just perfect.
I really thought the nerd was going to do the teletransportation thing...
He wasn't a hippy in TCM the guy was an insane guy who worked at a slaughter house.
+euphoricacid his brother in the second movie was a crazy hippy
I had no idea that was Mike. Bullshit, really???
Wait... That was fucking Mike?! Holy shit. 😂
3:00 makes me laugh hard.
"I'll tell ya what."
"Yeah? What?"
"Yeah, its still a hundred dollars."
"Yeah, uh, what the fuck, man!?"
is it bad i watch this all the time. it reminds me of my dad, cause like a decade ago I was watching it, and he was in the other room and started laughing his ass off at the "shit stain in the bottom of my drawers" line.
love you, pop!
Watching this on October 9, 2019. Yeah that's right, exactly 11 years later.
Me too! Watching my yearly Nerd binge of all his episodes 😁
Will keep coming back too!
A week from 12 years now. Oct 2nd 2020
3:05am. October 9. 12 years later. Scary
@@pfannkuchesindgeil5348 you should have waited a week more before posting your comment. 😁
9:22 "Bitch Boy" was a super hero I came up with in the 4th grade, no lie.
+The Readers Corner LOL
+The Readers Corner You knew how to swear in the 4th grade?! Jesus.....:)
+Qasim Yusuf Ya I knew, I was quite the potty mouth. :)
+Qasim Yusuf I'm pretty sure children know what cuss words are even at a pretty young age. They just don't start saying them until they're a bit older.
shitty games
One of the best AVGN episodes! I still laugh everytime the farmer goes "yeuh boi."
He he he yuck yuck yuck, batter up betch boi!
"you were totally right on the ball, right on the money, RIGHT ON MY BALLS!" the best episode
I think a Texas Chainsaw game would be pretty cool if they made it for the PS3/4 or XBO/360. Just make it kinda like "Condemned" or "Outlast".
YEAH! With multiplayer with one player as Leatherface and the others as the girls!
Shit yeah!
PC*
it's gonna make GTA look like child's play.
I'm sure it would make *"Manhunt"* look like child's play.
I'll tell you what, yeah it's still $100...
That part killed me 😂
that part cracks me up every time
One of the best simple jokes I’ve ever heard lol
......
"Batter up, bitch boy"
Still the best AVGN episode to date... the old guy absolutely steals it
I find it highly significant that the Nerd is confronted with three different villains, each symbolizing a different mental state. The game vendor/hillbilly represents the jaded, defeatist attitude ("if he doesn't like games, why does he still play them?"). The hippy/fan shows the fear of obsession, the concern that reviewing the games might swallow up the experience of actually playing. Finally, Leatherface is his own primal, unfocused rage. While it is crucial to his identity as the Angry Video Game Nerd, it nevertheless threatens to destroy him. In the end, the Nerd is able to escape them because of his knowledge of game mechanics (Leatherface is blocked by the bicycle). This is to say that the Nerd maintains an unwavering commitment to the games themselves. He thereby elevates the psychological state of play from one of stress and focus, to a freedom wherein he is able to transcend the bonds of the anxious self.
Okay so maybe that was complete and total bullshit. I loved this episode though.
Kiri Laing Hey, would you please send me some more existential stuff? I'm loving it... Like, send me a picture of someone looking up into the sky saying "WHAT IS LIFE" to a emerald-green book about popsicles...
Kiri Laing No, watch Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2
+Kiri Laing this is more or less why many film subtexts are completely subjective and most likely were never intended.
I guess the couldn't find a wheelchair
It's fun to speculate on, BS or otherwise, same way people read into the original TCM movie as a full allegory for slaughterhouses (like the meta structure as opposed to just the character backstory)
8:00 I think Lester eventually did find his way into AVGN. In Lester the Unlikely...
Mike is genuinely a good character actor. I love all of his roles in these videos.
I feel like im watching a Texas Chainsaw movie. They really nailed the atmosphere
Did anybody notice that the farmer is dressed like Mario?
SamuelXproductions you're right on the ball man!
Omega Slav banana is a banana
I think red shirts and overalls predate Mario
Mario doesn't wear a wicker hat
@@bugsfm8840 Right on my fucking balls!
6:45 James mentions Mortal Kombat while playing Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and then 9 years later Leatherface appears in MKX.
R.I.P. Gunnar "Leatherface" Hansen
He died?!
+spite jenni not the actor for avgn. the actor for the original tcm. the guy that plays in this video is still alive
+Perry Cox they mean the actor . Duh . The actors name was Gunnar Hansen
+Maximus4587 That sucks. The original Leatherface, God rest his soul, is still the best.
+Anita Sarkeesian leather face was real his house is in Tyler Texas you can take a tour of it
If the Nostalgia Critic in 2019 made this, the scenes would look extremely low and they would be very long, and then Leatherface would say Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees ripped him off. It would be shit.
And there would be 0 talent.
Just the thought makes me quiver. Why does he have to drag things out for so long.
man after watching the original texas chainsaw massacre this episode is 300% better
But it caricatures the 2nd movie though.
7:51
When James says “I know”, he briefly looks at the camera as an inside joke referencing how many fans had emailed him, telling him that he had accurately predicted the then upcoming Rambo movie’s title correctly.
The effect of the to be continued still makes me get a chill up my spine. Had to watch this before October 31 at night to get the full feeling on Halloween
Nerd in his prime, better acting than modern horror movies
This episode is just so creepy. Specially after you've seen the Game Theory about the AVGN.
"Wait a minute."
"Yeah?"
"... It's still a hundred dollars."
I lol'd hard, lmfao
The salesman scene is my absolute favorite AVGN piece
Rewatched all the episodes for the past three days... Got to this one and man... This really was the best episode. The production value, acting, plot was all really spot on.
The game seller is the phalanx game cover dude's brother xD
if the guy with the chainsaw could just got out of fuel, then the nerd comes back and kick his ass that would be hilarious lol
claro señor presidente.
Creo que eres un farsante porque peña nieto no habla una mierda el inglés.
jesuss0077 Tambien hablo peruano :C
jesuss0077
I think you're a fake rock that grandson speaks no English sucks?
Did Google translate have a stroke again?
You're bolud and you dont have eggs
That scene with the fanboy coming in is like the ideal Dead Rising psychopath cutscene
Every time James puts his name in the credits, it's always at the bottom of the list or at end of the roll. Very subtle example of how humble the man is, I have a lot of respect for him as an amateur film maker
its still 100 dollars.
"Ahh what the fuck man??" LMFAO!!!
The game salesman is fantastic. One of my favorite side characters.
11:51
How to easily beat Leather face in MKX
This is actually one of my favorite AVGN episodes. 11 years have passed and the quality is still amazing.
I do think he should try out some n64 games.
I mean some more.
Jason Mingo I think only Superman 64
aMAXproduction maybe theres not many bad n64 games/
nes is his thing but he's running out of those games. presumably he'll move onto primarily snes games
Dan Harvey He did Reviewed Sonic 06 in 2017 and another nes game called treasure master.
I will assume that this video was the birthplace of the old story of the guy who bought a cursed game at a garage sale.
expect he lives in the end
The re-watch value of these classic AVGN episodes is priceless. This one in particular is just awesome!
I binge-watch all these Halloween episodes during October.
3:20 "F R E E E free." Classic
Hippie guy made me laugh so hard.
This episode is actually scary and funny at same time
3:02 The earliest days of Bamboozling. Also, this is one of my favorite AVGN scenes. Just cracks me up every time I watch this one. Solid humor all these years later! That's quality! 😁👍
07:00 i love how James just mocks all the typical fans
The part where the nerd fan comes in is just fandoms in a nutshell...
That's Chop-Top from TCM 2... That's a reference to a scene in the second one.
It was a part of the Sawyer Family from the TCM films.
I actually played this game. 5-year-old me thought it was the most absolutely shitty thing I'd ever played. At least in ET you had holes to fall in.
Ian Sheridan why did your parents let you play this?
7:05 Anyone else thinking of Cool Cat when you hear this guy's voice?
Is crazy the acting was was really good in this. Lol just scrolled though comments seems I wasn't the only one who noticed. Awesome video.
I just watched it again and I was blown away....🤣
I wonder if "Lester" was in the movie's review of ET
He was talking about Lester the unlikely
Prolly
Great episode! I love the elaborate nature of this one, really feels like a horror movie. I also like that there’s a “hillbilly humor consultant” in the credits.
8:30, the only good use for an Atari 5200 trackball controller. Lol
You guys went over the top with this episode! The production really is spot on to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies especially number two. Great video!
So is the hick Papa Rolfe? Considering they're all from Jersey, he does a pretty killer southern accent. Mike was hilarious too, especially the part where he busts into his room.
Nah. He's actually an actor in the area. Idk how they hooked up.
Eddie Murphy?
This is my favorite AVGN episode. It's just so well done and works as a great parody.
4:46 I can't unsee a water faucet sprouting out of his chest
It's been a decade and this and the Halloween review are still my favorite!
Eggman's voice from Sonic for Hire, i just know it!
MoonlightandSilver CatandHedgehog the crazy hippie guy
I love your picture, my ordinary life!
TAYGAMES! that's Mike
MarkP I thought mike was leatherface?
One of my favorite episodes . That hillbilly guy is amazing
LMAO I love those stupid dance moves of Leatherface with the chainsaw just like from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2
One of the best youtube videos ever made. I see you put lots of effort! We video game and horror fanatics worship this video :D
When Leather Face was chasing AVGN, I really thought AVGN would teleport away.
One of my favorite AVGN episodes for sure! LOVE the crazy characters in this one!
They made a Texas Chainsaw game...for the 2600?!
Have to watch this every October! One of the CZcamsrs that still puts out amazing content. I can’t thank you enough James!!
I don't know why, but I crack up every time James says doodoo, poopie, poopoo, etc.
I actually find that to be pretty cute.
12:15 This teaser for the next part was so hype-worthy.
(In retrospect the music probably could’ve been better timed to start when he flips the cartridge over, but eh, what are you gonna do?)
this must be one of my fav episodes I reach this all the time u stick to the second Texas chainsaw movie so perfectly it's just amazing perfect work thanks for all the great videos u guys r the best

I just love this AVGN episode. I keep watching it every now and then up to this day.
Cause if ur gonna look at it u can put it right back on that FUCKIN TABLE!
this was better than the movie

You mean the 1974 classic
The Nerd on his prime. Love it and miss these older styles of episodes.
That scene in tcm 2 with chop top in the record studio with leatherface doing the jumpscare hit me hard. It’s up there with “the thing”’s heart attack scene and the scene in Halloween where the girl gets killed in the car.
I love that intro, it is one of the best things ever, it's got a great back and forth but it feels natural. I'm rewatching just for that.
Who was the actor playing the banjo player he actually did a rile good job
It's the funniest intro with the Texas chainsaw disclaimer
This is my favourite episode. The ending is so fucking hilarious, so much quotable moments!
In honor of the new Texas chainsaw game releasing why not go back to a classic video
Me to
“I’ll tell ya what... yeah it’s still 100 dollars”
Lol the scenes with the farmer dude near the end are literally the best stuff the nerd has put together. Funny af, great acting from mike and that farmer guy.
11:04 all the years of me watching your videos I've found the head. Awesome easter egg
