Australian Igloo: 28 nights out in the Australian backcountry.

My partner Indi and I set off on an adventure to the Australian high country. Inspired by the Inuits traditional shelter and building methods, we aimed to build an Igloo as a basecamp shelter to live out of while we explore and ski nearby terrain. While the 2023 snow season in Australia turned out to be far from an above average season in terms of snow fall, we still managed to successfully build and spend 28 nights in our Igloo. The igloo was first built on 7/8/23. Eventually warmer weather and lack of snowfall made it too much work maintaining our shelter. We left it to melt away on the 5/9/23.
Last season some friends and I did a similar thing and due to much higher snowfalls the igloo lasted an impressive 59days! (30/7/22 - 26/9/22). Peak wall thickness of the 2022 igloo reached 1.2m after heavy snowfall and a double layer construction.
This seasons igloo featured a new design we were exited to try out, combining two domes in the one igloo. The smaller dome being the bedroom, and larger open cooking/dining room being the larger dome. It also had a bench seat/spare guest sleeping platform. Roof height was over 2m so walking around in this main space was comfortable. Small solar powered lights lit the space easily.
A regular commute was made every 4-5 days to resupply with food and carry out our waste. A huge part of living out in the igloo was doing so with no impact on the surrounding environment. A seperate small outhouse was built to make a stormproof toilet, and lined PVC tubes served as poo storage.
When the weather was good, we found ourselves exploring high on the main range and around blue lake, in poor visibility however, we stuck to nearby slopes and sheltered inside. The igloo is 100% windproof and surprisingly quiet during a storm.
