- What is that semi-circle structure off the right side of the Jones Falls Expressway? Wonder no more-its the Ma & Pa Roundhouse! Enjoy today’s Five Minute Histories video on this special surviving structure of the defunct Maryland & Pennsylvania Railroad.
This is our series called "Five Minute Histories." Twice a week, we’ll record a short video about a different historic place in Baltimore and post it on our Facebook page and website.
Would love to see the roundhouse fully restored, along with turntable and tracks. Glad to see she is still around today!!
We're glad its still here too!
I agree more about the Roundhouse would have been nice, especially if you're interested in saving it. Another term for this would be Engine House. Mostly locomotives were stored for and cared for in the round house. Some repair of rolling stock might have been done. Steam locomotives would have been stored for the night with fires burning but "banked" and a night watchman would have tended to the fires continued but did not damage the structure. In the morning the fires would be stoked, and pressure brought up on the boilers run for the day. If an engine needed repair or inspection, it's fire would have been dropped (extinguished). Thanks for sharing, good to make people aware of the history!
Nice overview of a complex area.
I often see this building when driving on the highway. It was once a beautiful building. I really hope the city of Baltimore fixes it up again. I hate seeing that poor roof caving in!!!
you really didnt say ANYTHING about the Roundhouse .. when it was built how it was made whats its structure made of its walls its roof how many stalls it had ..
I thought you had raided some of my photos! Thanks for the credit to my website.
Thanks for your work!
