I visited Croatia last year & fell inlove with the place. It did gave me a feeling of “I want to live here.. I want to retire here..”
Another country that gave me that feeling is Portugal.
But Croatia is definitely on top of my list.

Croatia is much nicer than Portugal. We went for two weeks to see if we wanted to live in Portugal. we didn't like it at all. been to Croatia 7 times. That is the place to live but they will only let you live there for 2 years and you have to leave for 18 months.

But you can find very decent place to stay for very acceptable price. And in a pre season and post season the prices are lower. Just goggle it. Get informed. Everybody can find what they looking for. Croatia has it all.

I am Croatian, Born on the Coast. Near Rovinj. A tip for retirees who like work - like I plan to be - Who want to stay productive and help humanity, may enjoy cities such as Zagreb, Varazdin, and more, where there is less red tape and access to universities and talent. Personally, as a Croatian who speaks 7 languages and has lived for extensive periods of time in various cities for work and adventure, the great moment will be when things can get done in Rijeka or Split with the efficiency of Varazdin or Čakovec. What I am saying is that seaside and hot sun is just a small part of Croatia. You can retire and improve the Dalmatian dog breed for example. You can restore olive groves. You can advance sustainable farming. You can work with Croatian high tech and develop eV industry. I don’t understand why people just talk about the sea. You can be in an amazing cultural town and renovate a decrepit monastery. When you want to go for a swim, it’s only a 2 hour car ride from most places. Poke around. Go to a place like Pazin or Buzet , you will be amazed by the education and international experiences people have, but it so easy to overlook when you are just rushing to a crowded beach.

Although it is good starting point, there's actually much, much more to Croatia than it's coastal parts that are most known, internationally presented and extremely exploited for the sake of the tourist industry!
This guide is based only on Adriatic - maritime part of Croatia that is, at best, only about one half of the country!
There are many interesting regions, cities and places in continental Croatia that are undeservedly below tourist radar like amazing capital of Zagreb, baroque jewel of Varaždin, fairy tale town of Samobor, Karlovac-city with amazing star shaped fort and old town, beautiful Osijek with baroque fort and old city, medieval town with preserved citadel in Ilok, Požega with preserved old town and famous Kutjevo wineries, Đakovo with majestic cathedral and 16th century horse stables, Vukovar, Slavonski Brod with one of the most preserved and largest star shaped baroque era forts and old monastery and so on, so on...
Also You've only prevented cuisine from the coastal areas but Croatia has HUGE selection of local culinary traditions practically unknown to the foreigners that are aggressively presented only maritime specialties! Croatia has larger number of regions, sub-regions and even more local areas with fantastic local dishes, great local traditions and interesting local styles of living!
Someone who's considering living in Croatia also should know that anything in coastal areas is considerably more expensive there: food, housing, monthly costs, public traffic, services... Cites like Dubrovnik and Split although beautiful, are extremely expensive in all areas of living! In some continental cities that are also beautiful you can get a whole lot more usually for the much less money and without annoying hordes of tourists and huge traffic jams!
Also there are many breathtaking small villages in beautiful nearby countryside!
Don't get me wrong, coastal Croatia is very worth mentioning but from the prospective of locals it is very annoying to see this huge foreigners obsession with only one part of our country that is much more than this super hyped coastal areas!
Best regards from the continental Croatia!

Croatia has a new Nomad visa if you work online and tax free for oINE year. Regarding applying for visas temporary or long stay, if you are American the #1 thing you need is the FBI background check and Secretary of State Certification. Without that you can’t apply for anything in Croatia but you don’t need a lawyer now since Croatia has made it pretty easy with their new website.

Very good question, very simple answer: your Grand pa probably left the Island because of the grape phylloxera diseas which was a disaster for wine producers who used to live from this business in the Island. In that period, Korčula, Vis, Brač and Hvar lost half of their population in few years, moving to Chile, Argentina, USA etc. because then it was the Eldorado of the New World. Tragic destinity for good People who travelled from their sunny homr Island without trip back possibility to other continent (can you immagine moving from Brač to Punta Arena)?
