The best-selling car in America the year I was born (1979)!!! This is sincerely one of my all-time favorite cars for a very special reason. The Cutlass is one of those very special cars, like the Ford Mustang & Volkswagen Golf, that is truly all things to all people. The QUINTESSENTIAL everyman's car, if you will. Want a basic run-around-town car that still has some luxury with good gas mileage? Can do. Want a luxury car that doesn't make people think you are about to take them to the cleaners? Sure thing. Want a fire-breathing muscle car that still has room for the family? You bet!!!!!

I was 6 years old and living in Eugene, Oregon at the time and remember seeing these Cutlasses EVERYWHERE. Very popular car. The music in this video reminds me of the music they played in the dinner restaurants our family frequented at the time. Very fond memories here.

What kind of food did they serve? Fried clam strips? I find it interesting to recreate early 80's food experiences. Nowadays we do greapefruit for breakfast often for that reason. Like Howard Johnson's. And make marzipan cake. Out of style nowadays. Fried liver&onions. And homemade caramel pudding. What else was good from back in the day?

    • @TVHouseHistorian

@@Santor- that’s a really interesting question. I’m a little foggy on those kind of details, but I would bet $20 (which was worth a *lot* more back then) that they served things like steak and popcorn shrimp with a very typical American side salad that had round croutons in it. Maybe a burger with big thick Texas fries. I’m sure they had those awful fried clams too. Shrimp salad… maybe something like chicken cordon blu. Fish & chips. Peach cobbler…Any kind of pie you can think of. Typical American fare in those days looked nothing like what it does today. Now that you mention it, it’s really interesting to look back and remember that stuff.

My first car in HS. I had the blue standard Cutlass portrayed in the film. It was a former Hewlett-Packard corporate car and came with CA emissions on the 3.8 which was indestructible. Car taught my 16 year old self how to drive a slow car safely. With 6 kids in the car it couldn't really go over 75! Best memory - at a traffic light when it turned green I got my doors blown off by a VW Super Beetle - LOL. Good times.

I rode in one this exact color as a kid, and I have to say I was impressed! The loud exhaust outside (hole in muffler) could not be heard inside, it was silent, smooth riding, and powerful (5.0), atleast compared to any other car id ridden in.

Very stylish, opulent appointed automobile. That's what an Oldsmobile was. And yes, it was supposed to be your father's Oldsmobile. The brands market was older buyers, or at least it was successful with that market for decades during it's existence. Marketing lesson....you don't mess with what works.
