- The Timothy Dalton James Bond era came to an end with 1989's LICENCE TO KILL, one of the most controversial James Bond movies ever made. A notable disappointment at the North American box office, many thought the film was too violent and owed too much to contemporary action films of the era, such as DIE HARD, LETHAL WEAPON and TV's MIAMI VICE. It would take six whole years for the next 007 outing to get made, but it would be without Dalton, who would leave the role in 1993, with his proposed final outing, THE PROPERTY OF A LADY, never getting made.
However, the years have been kind to LICENCE TO KILL, especially in light of Daniel Craig's acclaimed run as a grittier, grounded 007. In some ways, Dalton was doing what he did, but was simply ahead of his time. Plus, the film had an outstanding villain in Robert Davi's Sanchez, along with a young Benicio Del Toro as his right hand man Dario. And then there was the gorgeous Carey Lowell as one of the toughest Bond girls ever, CIA pilot Pam Bouvier, plus Talisa Soto, a larger than usual role for Desmond Llewelyn as Q and more! He is still under appreciated. As Bond and as an actor. The Living Daylights is my favorite Bond movie so far (and I'm old enough to have seen some of the Roger Moore movies in theaters) and I also love License to Kill. It's a shame Dalton only had 2 movies as Bond. I mean, I understand them wanting to go back into the sorta wacky gadget-fests and what not with Brosnan etc. But Dalton (like Connery before him) brought a way more gritty, realistic Bond to the screen. And while I love both Connery and Moore, Dalton just, I don't know - looked like Bond more to me? Daniel Craig has also kinda hit that itch of being gritty and realistic (though as his movies have gone on, that's kinda been minimized as they go lol)

Favourite Bond, favourite movie. I think its funny how Q is always telling Bond to bring his equipment back in one piece and cussing him for not respecting his work but in this movie Q uses the gadget hidden in the broom and then straight away throws it in the bushes!
That's kind of Q in a way, though -- he's the guy who has a combination speedboat/assault craft as a "vacation boat"!

This happens all the time... I am hesitatant to say, but the Ultimate Edition of Batman V Superman is an incredible film. That still gets talked about and discussed often and probably will for a long time. I think it was very ahead of its time.
I rewatched MOS, BVS:UE and then ZSJL and I know that I will always watch those movies. Same as I do stuff like Ghostbusters or Terminator2, films I've watched for about 30 years. Don't get me wrong I like the MCU a lot but the action comedy formula is a trend and I have forgotten so many of those movies. A few like Dr Strange, Thor Ragnarok and Winter Soldier stand out but that's it.
Stuff like Blade Runner, Brazil and The Matrix will always be talked about because of how different they were from that time. Gritty Bond in 80s was crazy when you think of the previous two with Roger.
Just the fact that Pam was such a counterpart to Bond, not a damsel or sidekick, but fully fledged counterpart was forward thinking. The grittier, more down to earth espionage thriller genre didn't really take off for another few years after this.

I am fully on board for even a female spy in same universe... Have Q pop up or something... Sly wink and nod to audience about 'him'...we had Pam. We had Ripley. We had Sarah Connor. Both older and new version of Lara Croft. Angelina in Wanted. We have Black Window(Florence Pugh is going to be great) and ♥Lorraine Broughton♥...actually ya know Gina Carano did a really good job at a kick ass spy in Steven Sodebergh's 'Haywire'... I seen it on TV in a hotel one night my ex had drunk too much too early. It caught my eye because there's a lot shot in Dublin(Stephens Green and coming onto Dawson St is one particular chase) and Michael Fassbender is in it. Its an odd choice for Sodebergh but she kicks ass!
The issue I have is things blatant in your face like that dreadful scene in Avengers Endgame or a mediocre film and mediocre performance by Brie Larson in Cptn Marvel sort of you being TOLD how amazing it is and if you don't like it or her and don't go see it or say anything less than stellar praise? Then you are a scumbag! And as for the craziness that is Batwoman...'it's perfect when it fits a woman'... 'I don't want a man taking credit for a woman's work' etc etc...even my fiancé said 'turn this off'
I really don't see why establishing new characters is such a bad thing and why changing so radically and retconning others is so good. James Bond was written by a middle aged British Upper middle class man in the 50s. It reflects his views quite a bit. That's cool. It's 2021 and someone like Idris Elba would be amazing as Bond.
But Bond is not a woman. Bond is into them a lot however. He is suave, sophisticated, has impeccable taste in everything from jam 'Tiptree Little Scarlet Strawberry Jam' to watches to guns to cars. He is a trained killer, he doesn't care about feelings or Blofelds childhood, he doesn't respect safe spaces, he can be un PC, he can be icy cold and ruthless and quite callous at times. He likes women. Of all colours and creeds. He likes going to bed with them and he probably won't call or make a blog post after or worry about being 'cancelled' because he ghosted her, he eats meat and enjoys it immensely, he won't worry about the little lamb as he is tucking in. As much as I would love to see a real big budget 60s Bond film made now, he has to move on with the times sure. But he shouldn't bend to the teeny tiny crowd on twitter who screech about who he is.
By all bloody means, create characters who are women or trans women and minorities and who don't shoot the enemy they ask them into a safe space and converse with them and try to get to the crux of the issue... Have that character a vegan, quadruple-deluxe-pan-bi-tri-sexual in a polygamous relationship with only trans folk of colour, have that character cycle an upcycled bike and work for the people instead of the evil government and don't give them a number because that's discrimination... WHATEVER!!! But leave Bond alone.
Leave the characters already known and established alone and make new ones.
Like many people, I’ve always said Dalton was my favorite Bond (well, Sean Connery is the champ by default). I met Pricilla Barnes a few years ago and we agreed that Dalton was woefully underrated.

That may have been a lie, uttered just to provoke Leiter (e.g. her dress is not torn).
Severne (?) being killed off in Skyfall or Vesper Lynd being drowned in CR may well be the second darkest moment of the EON 007 movies.

I wish Dalton had done more Bond films. I always though he was a very good Bond and 2 more good films might made him the best Bond. And "Licence to Kill" was brutal, rough and realistic. Imagine more of this!
I liked Timothy Dalton as Bond. He played him as a hard bastard. James Bond isn't meant to be Mr nice guy.

The action set pieces of this film are brilliant. The water skiing, the execution of Krest and the finale are amazing and old school. Also Pam Bouvier, along with Goldeneye’s Natalya, the most underrated Bond girl to date. Great character.

Genuinely, if it wasnt for my unwavering love of On Her Majesty's Secret Service this would be my number 1 Bond film. This movie is genuinely brilliant all around; from the score, the action set pieces, the characters, the way Bond uses Sanchez' loyalty against him, this movie is just top notch all around.

“You earnt it. You keep it, old buddy!” Dalton’s portrayal of Bond is IMO the best. The rage, is beautifully juxtaposed against the cheek he shows when he looks up Pam, and the sensitivity he shows towards Q. Just take a look at the scene when he is interrogated by the HK agents... “P**s Off” 007 snitching on Q?! Forget it. Also just take a look when he kills Sanchez, he is sitting on a boulder rock, bloodied, beaten and close to tears. Beautiful absolutely brilliant

-A fish called Wanda was so hilarious and top 5 comedy of the 80s.
-Indiana Jones 3 was really awesome and fun as hell, better then temple of doom.
-Batman was a new dark movie with a really great story, villain and atmosphere
-Tango & cash with Kurt Russell & Stallone was a fun flick.
-Glory is still the best civil war movie ever made and excellent performances and story
-Born on the Fourth of July is still one of the best Tom Cruise perfomances and an excellent movie about the war veterans when they come home, really great but very sad
-Look who is talking was a nice comedy with a charming story and great chemistry between the two actors, also was John Travolta big comeback
-Lethal weapon 2 was a really better sequel, more fun, better story, better cinematography and joe Pesci was hilarious.
-Ghostbusters 2 wasn’t a great sequel and in some ways bad, but was a decent movie for a night
-Back to the future 2 was a really fun sequel and awesome continuation of the franchise, love the sci-fi tone.
-Uncle buck was probably one of the really fun charming comedy of the 80s, with an awesome script and excellent hilarious John Candy, man I miss him, one of his best roles
-And then an awesome underrated dark James Bond movie with nice action sequences.

I would not call it Bond movie. It is Scarface pretending to be a Bond movie.....That is the main problem with it. Too serious, extremely violent and even depressing. Standalone it is great action flick but as a Bond movie it is somewhere at the bottom.

Timothy Dalton is such an amazing Bond.
I just watched this again the other day. I have to confirm that his movies have aged so well. At the time of release though, I recall that he was getting panned for being too dark, too gritty, too straight-laced. Bear in mind, we were just coming off the Roger Moore Bond movies. And it was jarring to see the Adam West goofy style of Bond movies switch over to a Christopher Nolan Dark Knight style. But to more modern eyes rewatching these Dalton films, you can't help but realize that they were years ahead of the times...

Also benicio Del toro was good and hot and the ending truck chase is one of the most awesome action scenes maybe of the 80s

I've always seen Tim's Bond to be a man who just doesn't care about fashion or looking clean and cut, he just wears whatever he has to get the job done. To me that's just another part of his character.
Thank you for pointing out that this movie has more Ian Fleming in it than most entries. Timothy Dalton is the only actor to play James Bond as Ian Fleming wrote him. He's my favorite Bond.

this is my favorite bond movie and favorite theme song.
This was the first Bond film that I ever saw. When I was a kid, I thought it was just another action film. At that time I didn’t realize that it was part of this legendary film franchise. This one is always going to be memorable to me for being my first Bond flick.

This was my first James Bond movie I ever saw in theaters with my Dad one of the things we watched together and both loved. It will always have a place in my memories as well loved.

Dalton's most memorable outing as bond and one of my favourite bond films ever. Easily a top 10 bond film and the best bond film of the 1980s. As an action film alone it's great and yeah I have to agree they were trying to follow the trend of Scarface and Miami Vice. However in my opinion this film is the most Ian Fleming bond outing ever. I give this film 9/10

License to Kill is one of my favorite Bond movies, and Timothy Dalton's version of Bond was the best one so far in my opinion. I am a huge Robert Davi fan as well. I consider this the most underrated Bond movie.

Dalton chose not to return due to the fact that by the time they got the legal battles sorted out, Dalton was nearly 50. He only wanted to do one more film due to his age, but Cubby Brocolli didn't want to relaunch the franchise with someone who was only going to do a single film. At that point, Dalton stepped down.
I was always watching this, my dad's video of NSNA, and AVTAK. In Ireland we had the uk TV channels and they always had bond on. I was crazy into Goldeneye when it came out, I was 11, but from a young age I was familiar with Bond. LTK particularly is burned into my memory. When I was older I read the books and appreciated Dalton even more. The Bond films can be sometimes topical so this definitely fits the end of the 80s. Had the third one happened then it would have involved robotics and China and Hong Kong. Some elements being used for Tomorrow Never Dies (97 was when the handover happened)
With Dalton you definitely get that cold, icy streak and he can appear like he is scanning the room and is always on his guard. With him you really believe he is in fact a Commander in the Royal Navy. Dalton can tell you that Bond has seen things with just a glance.
While I enjoy the Bond girls (Eva Green, Monica Bellucci, Barbara Carrera, Britt Eckland, Famke Jannsen and of course Ursula Andress in particular) it makes sense a killer like him wouldn't be attaching himself so easily to many women over the course of a mission. He can be utterly charming and witty but there is a real cold determination to him and you wouldn't want to fuck with Daltons Bond.
I recently rewatched a bunch of Bond and while I know every beat in this I enjoyed it far more than I thought i would. It is so solid. The set pieces are great and having a few gadgets thrown in, Talisa Soto, a sort of female counterpart and a brilliant villain makes this one of the best.
Technically I think the game James Bond the Duel was Daltons last official Bond outing... (note to anyone who hasn't played Everything or Nothing??? Hunnt it down and play it. Pierce, Dench, Cleese, Willem Defoe as zorins protégé, return of Jaws, Mya who also does theme song, heidi Klum and Shannon Elizabeth... Different styles of gameplay, great story, great locations and tons of fun... A brilliant send off to Brosnan, waaaaay better than the movie one!) but he was just on the cover in 92/3 I think.
A good point btw made about how violent the original books were. I recently went over them again and besides getting hungry and thirsty(he writes so well about food and drink are great) and chuckling about how parts of it are soooooo of it's time (the whole Pussy Galore thing in the book) is how violent and dark at times the books get. It's not even for violence sake, but Fleming I suppose considered that not many spies retire and at times its kill or be killed, and you weren't going up against reasonable people...
So I can see why after the raised eyebrow and quip heavy Moore films the change in pace was jarring but it was a different time and IN the source material.
A shame he didn't get another chance, because I am sure a comfortable Dalton would have given something special for Bond of the 90s...but we got the fantastic Goldeneye so not all bad!!
Always amused me when Brosnan was cast... The whole British Isles represented in Bond then,
Connery for Scots, Moore for English, Dalton for Welsh and Brosnan Irish. (Lazenby Australian too not forgetting love for you guys!)

It's my birthday in April and planning to make Vespers for first time. Probably not many because of how strong! (Unfortunately I can't have the real Vesper)And hopefully order a few of the products he liked so we can have Bond meals too. There a great website on Bonds food, drink, smoking, gambling habits etc. Some of the products are still available and it has insight to how Fleming got the idea for certain things. Great reading for Bond fans.

Timothy Dalton made really 2 solid Bond entries and this movie features my favourite Bond girl in Carey Lowell's Pam Bouvier. Q giving Bond a signature gun is something they revisited in Skyfall.
Dalton was always my favourite, especially after reading some of the Fleming stories.

I think he was never underrated. It was the content and style of this movie that killed his career as Bond. It is basically Scarface pretending to be a Bond movie.
It's funny how we, as adults, make a big deal of who plays Bond and how he played the character but watching these videos I've realized that I saw these movies as a kid and I never really cared about stuff like that. Sure I noticed it was a different actor but really couldn't care less. It was more about the girls and the gadgets if I'm honest and personally, Carey Lowell and Talisa Soto were always my favorites.

One of my favorites as well. I much prefer the grittier, more intense Bond films. The only thing I didn't care for is Dalton's Bond hair style. It's almost as bad as the villains.

The Dalton films were my favourites back when I really liked Bond films, so when I was about 11. A fair amount of time has passed and they're still my favourites
People might have hated at the time but it's still my favourite, totally underrated and completely agree with you Mr. Baumbray, Dalton's Bond was so close to Fleming's character

Actually, an expected swing (of the pendulum) towards the "serious Bond" after the poor critical reception of DAD, as well as a certain degree of recoil against the Austin Power films. Still, LK (and OHMSS as well) may serve as an inspiration for the gritty tone of the current entries.
I'm glad you really liked this one. There are times when I feel I am one of the very few who appreciated it.
This film was ahead of its time and very under-appreciated. Craig’s films basically used this as a blueprint
I liked the living daylights much more than this one because I felt this movie went back to the old tired formula. However, the stuff with Q is so charming, the villain is pretty cool and I loved Pam Bouvier. ohh and of course I love Timothy Dalton as bond, probably top 3 for me.
The "villain" Sanchez is not sadistic..he's real. Loyalty is rewarded, betrayal is punished. It doesnt matter who or what is loyal or betrayed. Brutal, yes. Reality, yes.
I always thought he, as a Bond villain, was involved in the wrong business....having said that, he is a refelction of how reality works.Do good, get good..do bad, get bad.

Agreed. He's the kind of villain you didn't want to see die since he and Bond really seemed they could've been great friends in a different lifetime. Like Al Pacino and Robert De Niro's characters from Heat

Best Bond Film Ever... Yes it has its problems, the films looks at times as a TV movie, Talisa Soto, absolutely beautiful, but terrible in the acting stakes... but IMO it really is the best Bond film. Those who says that this isn’t a Bond film... well they are wrong, the setting maybe then contemporary... but the tone and subject matter is very much Fleming.
I always thought one of the problems here is that it's a "change of pace" Bond movie before Dalton even had a "pace" movie (since TLD was mostly developed when they thought Moore would be back again.)

Some of the best action scenes ever. Dalton was very close to the Fleming Bond. Probably in the top 5 of bond movies I rewatch.
Side note: A film company I was working with in Phoenix had a delay thanks to License to Kill. We were renting Uzis from the same supplier. The gas tanker shots went beyond their shooting schedule. But what a thrill to handle and fire the same guns as James Bond.

Robert davi made a great villian cause his character is somewhat likeable even tho hes evil
License to Kill is in my top 5 Bond movies of all time. Timothy Dalton, aside from Connery, is my second favorite cinematic Bond as he is the closest that comes to the literary Bond of Ian Fleming. Overall, very underrated film... I remember opting to see this movie over Lethal Weapon 2 and was never disappointed that I did.
Dalton's two bond's stand out in the franchise mainly because of his incredible acting talent. The plus in this second dalton film is looking at cary, she is so hot.

Living Daylights is still my favorite, but this is close second. I def prefer John Barry's score...but the plot of this one is pretty great
The film works/has worked over time because it takes the plot points & qualities of book Bond that adheres to those late 80s action film tropes, so it doesn’t feel too much out of character and still works in favour to that particular zeitgeist.
Thank you for the positive and glowing recap / review of this film. Not only is it my favourite Bond film, but it’s probably in my top ten favourite films period -it’s nice to get some sort of reassurance from somewhere! I still remember being heart brokenly disappointed being taken to Indiana Jones + TLC on my 14th birthday in Leicester Square, when THIS was also playing across the way in the bloomin’ Odeon no less (parental error thankfully rectified a couple of weeks later; though grudgingly, the Indy film was OK too). Kept the LTK poster in my bedroom for all of my student years. Special mention needs to go to a) the tanker chase at the end which is filmed beautifully and is amazing that it’s largely devoid of score, which in itself is kind of awesome, b) the opening gun barrel intro - best in series in terms of dramatic opening music (Kamen knew his stuff) and c) Carey Lowell’s face when she downs the martini! Dalton is the strongest most talented actor to undertake this role, no question. “Don’t you want to know why?” still stays with me. Goldeneye is my second favourite of the franchise (though obviously, Sean Bean should have been the lead!) so looking forward to the next entry.
Dalton is criminally underrated as an actor...he was great in early film roles in Cromwell and Mary Queen Of Scots, through his Errol Flynn phase (Flash Gordon and The Rocketeer) up to now (Hot Fuzz, etc).
Dalton was underrated as Bond and the films were massively underrated. License To Kill in my humble opinion is one of the best of the franchise. Your reviews are fantastic keep up the great work JoBlo.
