My dad was a ratel lieutenant, during the conscription period of South Africa.
And the comment on how slow it is correct, he has told stories of them driving through rough brush and small trees at over 30kmph, so i believe that gaijin has just incorrectly modelled it.
Did he serve in Angola as well? And which unit? Just very interested in the Bush War.
yeah gaijin nerfed the shit out of a lot of the wheeled vehicles due to them having good traction right after they nerfed tracked vehicle traction. so now everything feels like a bar of soap to drive.

Watching all those HEAT jets touch ammo directly and just turn them yellow is so sad. 1000 degree jet of molten metal has almost no chance of detonating ammo in snail land.

@@youlaughyouphill842 I mean you are technically correct, but at an average temperature of around 800 kelvin ~1000 degrees fahrenheit is still pretty fucking hot even if the common copper liner isn't truly molten for a few hundred extra degrees. More than enough to explode instead of turning light yellow on contact or somehow defuse a shell making it turn black and disappear.

Thing is that the ratel is actually very maneuverable… in real life at least, but because of the way gaijin processes wheels, it suffers so much
Yarp. The poor thing has a habit of having the wheels sunken a good 5-10cm into the ground. Even when that ground shouldn't be giving way. Still a fun vehicle in game, that 90mm gun is pretty lethal.

From what I've heard, the game is coded entirely around planes and that's why tanks can't climb a 30 slope, as you literally lose horse power trying to climb up (for short)
same as the G6. they were made for offroad sand, and were pretty damn good at it.
Never mind that the G6 doesn't have its 12.7mm coax nor its LRF like it does IRL...

@@LTSarcasm And I am not solely talking about *speed*. Ratel in War Thunder can barely climb over hills without suffering massive speed penalties. Its acceleration on all surfaces (including paved ones) is absymal. I'd have said you had a fair point if there weren't videos of Ratels on CZcams where they not just easily climb over obstacles, but also go *Pretty Fricking Fast*. Gaijin just doesn't know/doesn't want (how to) give wheeled vehicles the mobility AND maneuverability they have in real life.

As a Brit main, the Ratel 90 at the BR was my Ol' Reliable with it being the first tank you can get with HEAT-FS. It's a light tank that can reliably pen heavy tanks at it's BR at the cost of being sluggish, having the turning radius of 1.5 Walmart parking lots, and having about as much armour as a 2003 Toyota Tacoma. Used conservatively, I've top fragged without dying several times in it.

When you main a nation you're bound to top frag a few times in anything. It's just statistics. I've been top of the team with the SU-100Y several times. With good vehicles you can do it reliably though.

The problem with the Ratel is that people expect to play it as a fast flanker when in reality its more useful as a sniper/flanker, its still a huge CAS magnet tho since anything above a 7.7mm can pen it easily, whenever I CAS and see one myself I'll try and strafe it sorry

Given how much you enjoyed the 90, I recommend trying the Ratel 20. You swap out the heat slinger for a slow traverse, limited elevation, low pen 20mm and the post-atgm change Roland. Its like a marder with none of the benefits and even more negatives.
The Ratels are a good IFV family that sadly is not built for the type of combat War Thunder provides and most of its benefits not translating to the game.

MILAN at 6.7 is good. Probably the most maneuverable non bean riding ATGM in the game and smacking Tiger 2s with guided missiles never gets old.

1) Aim up or else it will smack directly into the ground
2) keep mouse steady as even the slightest movement will turn it into a beyblade
3) target drives away before it can reach
4) die to CAS
After around 80 matches with 6.7 SA I had to call it quits and just use the 90. I’ve only experienced this specifically with the ratel, I cant recall other Milan equipped vehicles having THIS much of an issue. Though I have had sucess using it as an indirect fire javelin.
It would also be funny if we got the Eland 20 as a Fox backup😈
@@Creepus_Explodus I miss the pre-tracking nerf roland so fucking bad bro I was smacking CAS left and right with that silly little guy, long before it could harm my teammates. Now they pretty much have to be coming in a forward attack and you gotta hope theyre completely tunnel visioned. This has resulted in much tighter windows to save the victim of a CAS strike.
I dont see why Gaijin cant ever find middle ground. They make it either complete area denial or extremely situation for some reason.

As a British main, the ratel 90 is actually amazing, especially if you get into good cover that only shows the turret
And it being bad isn't the vehicles fault, it was quite maneuverable, even off road

Also the transmission is so weird on the ratels, why is it in 6th gear when you're driving at 20kph? If the Ratel was at least fast, it would be usable, but in it's state, it's total garbage

Spookston coming in expecting the worst tank ever and coming out with: It's actually alright. Definitely my favorite thing about the Ratel 90. On all accounts it should be terrible, but it's raw empty space + the fact that the 90 Heat ends essentially everything at the tier with a well placed shot... it's a forever tank on my lineup whenever i'm around it's BR.

Attempt 57 Challenge: For high tier support a nations MBT with its respective APC/IFV counterpart (ie Abrams/Bradley, T90/BMP2M, etc.) Challenge is keeping the other player alive and supporting it without stealing kills (breaking barrels, tracking, repairing, etc) it being a random should help make it interesting.

I recently got the zt3a2 at 8.3 which uses the ratel chassis. It has missiles and 1 7.62 machine gun and probably the most useless laser range finder in the game.
Its one advantage is its so tall that you can shoot missiles over soke buildings without exposing yourself much

Spookston is dead on when he called it a bus. It’s an APC carrying a 90mm gun with HE shells for infantry support. It just happens to have theoretical access to HEAT-FS. I’d guess that IRL 99% of the time it didn’t carry more than 2-3 HEAT rounds if any at all.
As a tiger 2 player i can safely say that anything with HEAT-FS eats my vehicle
LazerPig's CZcamsr friends did a livestream recently where they did the Elbonia thing. One recommended the Ratel as the main Elbonian AFV because it can double as a school bus and save the state money. But also because it's a piece of garbage and would get permanently stuck in Elbonia's world famous mud. Then they will become improvised houses for the Elbonian revolutionaries.

Crazy theres still over 1000 of these things in worldwide service. And according to wikipedia, this gun is still the best thing it has. South Africa awarded a contract to produce a successor in 2007 with the Badger IFV and by 2023 still nothing has come of it.

As a South African, I’m glad we got some publicity for our vehicles, but I don’t think this is the good kind
Glad to see you figured out how to HEAT tigers after a few matches. Once you do, HEAT becomes much easier to use on most tanks. It's a bit contrary to what you expect, you literally want to UFP them down the middle as much as possible or ammo rack frontally like tiger. Roof is also great if up on a rare elevated position left in the game.

Fun fact: The variants of the Ratel were able to go to 90-100km/h just like the Fox. Reason they lowered the top speed? Just Gaijin, making the light tank line up harder to grind at 6.0 and up(also why does the G6 exists in the Light line up? I mean wheeled vehicle yea but its a so called TD)
I really used to hate facing the Ratel 90, not because it's to good, just because as a newer player I always aimed centre mass on light tanks and side on you just punch holes in that thing.
The Ratel 90 with the automatic gun and ATGM is epic. It’s low tier as well so only meets Tigers usually.
Man, Ratel 90 was one of my favourite vehicles in UK tree, it's so bad that you feel so good being on top of the team.

The ratel is one of the vehicles that I refused to grind because it was so horroble and those were the days that the Eland was around 6.7/7.0. The Eland however, is such a fun vehicle to play
The ratel 90 is surprisingly fun to play. Getting used to the speed and size is the hard part. I have been playing the desert warrior recently and I think I might call it the worst vehicle in the british tech tree at this point. So if you are going to avoid another vehicle skip that one. The regular warrior is decent.
You know what isn't depressing? The Crusader III at 5.7. Pure catharsis.
I love the Ratel 90, you can scout in places that folks don’t normally think of.
After suffering with solid shot for so long as a british main, to finally unlock the Ratel with HEAT-FS changed my outlook on the game. It stayed in my line-up for a long time, probably up to 7.7.
The British tech tree would be very bleak without the South African vehicles.

Also Spookston: Gets a 10 kill streak in said trash vehicle.
Meanwhile me: Struggles to get even 4 kills in a good vehicle, despite employing a lot of the tactics I see Spookston using in videos.

Use the BTR-80A in a high tier game mode! I have heard talk that it is awful in its respective tier but it is really good in higher tier such as 10.0.
I'll say the Camper Mod for interiors is gonna fit well within the spirit of the challenge. You can survive better with a mobile base and you can decorate it so the carpenters of zomboid shoud be also satisfied
