Following the Trail of Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little Houses

  • On the 2nd weekend of July 2013, we followed the trail of Laura Ingalls, by visiting her birth place, The Little House in the Big Woods, at Pepin WI. Then we headed west to Walnut Grove MN, and the Dugout House on Plum Creek. Finally on to De Smet SD to the Little House on the Prairie, and the 160 acre homestead. We saw some American History, and had a nice camping experience.
    This video is a very short, compared to the weekend, summary of where we went and what we saw.
    In March of 2014 we visited Mansfield MO to see Rocky Ridge Farm, that video may be viewed at: • Visiting Laura Ingalls...

    I was probably in second or third grade when i found laura Ingalls Wilder books. I had a big imagination so i could imgine myself back there with laura. Her books were fascinating so i couldn't put them down. She was so full of spirit and curiosity just like me. I also had wandering feet. I've read all her books. I am a senior now and always wanted to visit the museum. I don't think I'll make it now but I'll meet up with her in heaven one day . Along with pa !

    I went on my Little House vacation 4 years ago when I was 53. I have always been a real fan of Laura Ingalls Wilder and I can tell you it was the best vacation ever. We left from NY and the vacation took 3 weeks. I visited all of Laura's homesteads. I just loved it. Des met and Missouri were awesome. Saw everything from her birthplace to her grave. If you are a fan I highly recommend the trip. The next year we went to upstate NY to visit the Wilder farm in Malone. Also highly recommended .

    I am crying w/ tears of joy; because....Laura lived it + wrote about it & its my favorite book series ( + I adore all things Laura ) & have always wanted to make the same trips to all locations you were at....because You filmed this & shared you have made my mothers Day...BTW I'm disabled & could not make the trip now ( & it was my life's dream to go); so because you took the time out of your life to film & share...you have made my dreams come true & gave a little bit of Laura back to all of us who loved her...& the same generosity you have shown IS the message I get back from Laura's life~Blessings to you & yours~... Words can't do justice to having ones own dream come true, due to the actions of a stranger~ THANK YOU~

      Ruth Smith Ruth - your comment on my video blows me away. When we, my wife and I, took this trip, I knew virtually nothing about Laura, I'm just a guy taking videos of our travels. My thoughts were to share this with members of my family to show them where we went. I am thrilled that you, and others, have lived vicariously thru my videos. Thank you so very much for your kind comments.

    I drove 1,000 miles round trip just to see Pepin Wisconsin and the location of the Ingall’s Family “little house in the big woods.”
    I cried as I sat under a shade tree and contemplated the love that was shared by the Ingall’s Family. The heartfelt stories I recalled from the books written by Laura Ingall’s. Then my mind went to the hardships endured living in a time before modern medicine, before electricity, the automobile, and so much more. A simpler time when ma’s and pa’s and their children went to church on Sundays, when families gathered at the table for supper, when hunting and fishing didn’t require a license and both were done not for sport but instead to feed your family.

I am also and old "grammar" fanatic, you should have said "Laura too" not "Laura to", I hope as you continue through school, that you learn a great deal about US history, the times that Laura lived through, and that your teachers stress correct word usage to you. This is nothing like being there yourself! This video was awesome to watch, but I've been to the Ingalls Homestead several times (granted I work there) and it is so much more fun to be there in person! Also this video missed some of the most fun parts of the Ingalls Homestead because he didn't film the classroom setting, the Flindt's Garage, or the Church!
      This video was so different than the other videos of the Ingalls Homestead, because it is newer and I know ALL the workers in this video! So great to see! I might have been in it too, if he would've filmed the rest of the places to see and things to do there!
      Great video, though, akes me excited for summer so I can go back to work there!!
      I also hope to someday visit the other LIW home sites!

    • @curmudgeon66
      @curmudgeon66  Před 10 lety +1

      babylover0990 You are correct that I did not video EVERYTHING, there is a limit to the time that one can put into a YT video, and one must do selective editing.
      We spent a few hours at the Homestead in DeSmet.
      We spent a few hours in Walnut Grove, both at the museum and at Plum Creek.
      We spent a few hours in the Pepin area both the museum and the cabin site.
      I could have done three separate videos but chose to do one to give a high level perspective of our trip. I never intended this to be so detailed that it covered every aspect of each site in every detail. Our trip to these sites took 4 days, my video is about 30 minutes, it is a SUMMARY of what I considered the HIGH POINTS of the trip.
      I have no idea who you are, nor if you were even there at the time that I took the video, I never intended to show ALL of the people who work at these sites.
      Of course it is better to visit the places yourself, I agree, but for those who can't visit, or for those who are planning a visit, I hope that this gives some idea of what is to be seen. We highly recommend that others, who can, take a trip to as many of the LIW sites as they can.

    • @babylover0990
      @babylover0990 Před 10 lety +2

      curmudgeon66 I didn't mean that you should have or needed to put more on it. I was just stating facts for those who watch it, so they know that although it looks like a lot to do at the Homestead, there is even MORE!!
      And I didn't mean that I wanted to be in your video (in fact I prefer not to be in it, I don't like the idea of being on youtube) but that I might have been working that day, and if you would have included video from the other places on the Ingalls Homestead, that I might have been in it. There are only a few days that I can remember when all those people worked in the area that they worked and I was also working.
      I think this is a really great video!! It is a great summery of the trip, and since you're an adult, your high points are going to be different than those of a kid's and even those of other adults.
      Please, don't get me wrong, I really LIKED the video!! There is nothing wrong with it! I was just adding details and commenting that simply watching the video is nothing like actually being there, because the video may be Extremely awesome and fun, but being there yourself is EVEN BETTER!!

They are very worth your time and effort, but you will have to plan to go by car, as there is no public transport to any of these sites, and it is a long drive. One of the things we learned on our trip was that by following, in general, the route used by the Ingalls family we got a better sense of what their travels must have been like.

    I just stumbled upon your Laura Ingalls Wilder videos. I would love to visit some of the places you visited and recorded on your videos. Many times when I come home from work, I like to alternate between watching "Little House on the Prairie" or "The Waltons" during dinner time. I find watching both of those shows to be relaxing, peaceful, while feeding my heart, soul, spirit, and mind with good & enlightening lessons to learn. I just watched an episode of "Little House on the Prairie" tonight during dinner time. It was titled, 'Gold Country, part 2" about people panning for gold in South Dakota and how some people let dollar signs and greed get to their heads and they end up doing selfish and bad things because they focused their minds on striking it rich, etc.
    I really enjoyed your video. I felt like I was traveling with you. I haven't been on vacation in a very long time. So, I'm thankful & appreciative of CZcamsrs such as you who show and share your travels with us. There are many people who haven't found the time to explore the great places that the U.S. has to offer. Videos like yours help us learn more and help us decide where we would like to visit in the future. Thank you for taking the time to share these videos with us. Keep up the good work. I wish you a good week, & a great Fourth of July holiday! :-)

    The cabin near Pippin COULD have been that big. Pa would have had help to build it, from family. If you ever get to Mansfield, Missouri, don't even BOTHER to take your camera.... you can't even take photographs.... we enjoyed it very much, but found the ladies that ran it to be rather crabby and not overly friendly.

      Everyone that goes there says the ladies are very snobby and not very gracious to visitors. That is a shame! People go because they love the Ingalls family story. If you hate what you do, or think that you personally own the story....quit doing what your doing. People are curious and have questions if you can't be bothered quit your job! This should be a happy place where they bend over backwards to answer questions and be accommodating. Pa wouldn't have liked their attitude. Nothing like 2 Mrs. Olson's running the place, lol!

    I am THRILLED that I just happened to stumble across this video!! I just spent the last half an hour living vicariously through your trip-you can't imagine how happy this has made me!! I absolutely adored all the Laura Ingalls Wilder books when I was growing up, and have read them over and over. I didn't really her House in the Big Woods is only about 5 hours from my home. It is incredibly difficult for me to travel, due to a spinal injury 10 years ago and 4 subsequent failed spinal surgeries. But if I take it slow-and can convince my children(who are in their early teens and not interested in much of anything besides video games), maybe we could make it to the home in Pepin, WI. I always loved that part of her books the best.

I fully realize that the buildings are not the original, but the places are, and buildings are a fair representation.
