I think that the only reason there are even rumors to begin with is because of the new, “IF” movie. Since the whole plot of it is remembering your imaginary friends, but I do agree that they should leave him out.

My thoughts about bing bong possibly coming back so imagine this: *after the credits a black screen fades into a empty room door opens up. man walks in man: “HEY you think this is a good room for her” adult Riley walks in with small, faint, but noticeable grey hairs and with brown roots showing while holding a child. Riley: “it’s perfect” said with a smile. dude: “great I’ll go get crib pieces and the tool box” Riley: “mmkay” while waiting for her husband she hears a familiar voice it’s sorta faint but familiar “HEY RILEY LONG TIME NO SEE ‘S BEEN A WHILE” she turned only to see bing bong waving to her. Riley: “BING BONG” Riley was noticeably happy to see bing bong again(now representing inner child). Bing bong: “hey Riley (sees Riley recently born daughter) aww look at you cutie pie can I hold her wait I forgot I’m imaginary (chuckles) anyway y’know I have a kid of my own” Riley: “really?!” Bing bong: “yeah looks like both of our kids are gonna be friends (slight laugh) well till next time Riley bye” Riley: “bye bing bong” she quietly said. The end.*

I think thats why they made the switches with ennui and anxiety bc it is what an upcoming teen goes through but without the heaviness so you can still make it fun

In a way, Bing Bong wasn't truly forgotten. It was just to symbolize Riley growing up.
Also, in Inside Out 2, in Joy's bed, as she is sleeping, we can see an origami figure of Bing Bong and his wagon, showing us that Joy didn't let him go completely forgotten.
They were scrapped for the first movie, not the second one
