The comparison between the 180i and Vtec gearbox in this video is based on a few different factors. How the car feels/reacts, The final drive, The Km/h reading through each gear at a certain rpm's, etc.
This comparison is strictly between the 180i and Vtec gearbox. These are not comparisons between opened gearboxes with different gears/final drives.

Is there any physical way to identify if a S4C gearbox is from the 180i or VTEC? Or do you have to open it and count the final drive gear teeth?

You either have to open the gearbox or fit it in the car to check the ratio's
