You are spot on with the pros and cons!! The traffic is awful and the drivers are idiots. I’ve lived here since I was 15 and I just turned 71. When I moved here, we were around 50,000. 1967. Regardless of the cons, I love this city and wouldn’t live anywhere else. It has grown gracefully over the years maintaining its beauty and dignity!!

Another pro is the healthcare in Tyler. You need not go to Dallas to get state-of-the-art care. We have 3 large hospitals and yes they stay busy which is frustrating. There are long waits for some things but overall it is a huge Pro. Another con is the wages paid for the common person. Minimum wage or slightly more is the norm. Most spend more than half of their monthly income when renting an apartment. That sort of defeats the low cost of living. If you attend the Universities or have a high income if you transfer here, you will do well financially.

The pros to living in Tyler Texas is that it is in East Texas. Lakes, Forest, great weather, honey, fishing, and halfway between Dallas and Shreveport basically.
The cons of living in Tyler Texas is THE TRAFFIC. I live in Palestine Texas 45 miles south of Tyler, Palestine is very quiet and if you want entertainment you can visit Tyler and then come back to Palestine. LOL 👀 👍🏻
I'm not sure really why you bring up a small portion of the city that needs some care or is a little run down, because every single town and every single City that exist have older parts and that can be a little rundown or need some TLC. That is a constant everywhere.....? Other than that, pretty good video.

Loved the video! We used to have a club scene before covid. Although, I think it went downhill a bit before then as there were more people that would head up to DFW for a wider variety. Give it a few years and I am sure something else will pop up. Something that I did when I was looking to buy our home in Tyler, was to research the historical data on tornado paths. There is a handful of sites that you can find that show the history and path of past tornados dating back to 1950 in Tyler. There have only been a few since 1950 that have touched down in Tyler since then, most of the tornados that touch down and travel in the area happen outside Tyler. Either just north or east of Lindale or south of Tyler towards Whitehouse. That's not to say we don't get our share of hail and microbursts during supercells. I actually like to go out during the storms to watch them. I even took a few classes/lectures about inclement weather and spotting. I personally think the storms add a certain charm to the area, but then again my wife does say I'm a little crazy...

    • @livingintylertexas
      @livingintylertexas  Před rokem

Thank you very much!! Yeah I know what you mean, with all the growth Tyler is getting it is probably inevitable that a small ‘party scene’ will develop.

Ahah yeah when we had the tornado scare a couple of weeks back, I found myself just looking out the window, excited for it to come. I’m a little weird too though 😉

    Hi Ronnie,
    Some thoughts on your vid:
You're right, Tyler has a small town feel but has everything a big city could offer me.
You're right 2.0 that the people here are friendly. There is a huge difference between how strangers treat me here in Tyler and Dallas and other big cities. You can't even stand in line at the grocery store without someone chatting with you. I've even had people try to talk to me at a stop light. Personally, I like that even though I'm a shy introvert.
3.0, Yes downtown is so much easier to navigate and park than the big cities, love it.
About traffic, yes, growing, and during Christmas time people come from all over neighboring cities and counties to shop. I really like the growth here, Tyler is alive. I've seen other small towns that are dying and it's a terrible feeling. So, I'll take growth and traffic any day. You showed an overhead picture of heavy traffic, where was that video taken?
Heat? Yes, Texas, and we all have air conditioners in our cars and houses and stores, with the tiny exception of a few antique malls.
Rain? Yes. Once we got 11" !!. The first thing I noticed different about Tyler 20 years ago when I discovered it was that flowers and grass grew here! Going west like to Abilene, almost everything is dead and that depresses me.
Tornadoes? Yes, but I've lived in North Texas for 55 years and have never seen a tornado. The first question my friends from California ask me is "How do you tolerate the tornados???". After I answer that I ask them "How do you tolerate the earthquakes and mud slides and taxes and forest fires and riots and poo and needles on the streets??". haha.
Cost of living, yep really good, but also there isn't as many high-paying jobs.
Bugs? ok, I'll buy that. Snakes? Yep, 6 years ago I walked outside at midnight barefoot to pull the garage door down and stepped on a copperhead. It swelled up and I limped for a week. I set out a minow trap with an egg in it and caught him. True story.
Scenery/greenry - this is one of the big reasons I moved here, there's something about driving down a road with 60 foot pine trees hovering over the road that lowers my blood pressure. When I visit DFW the concrete begins to wear on me.
Party scenes? - ok, I didn't know that was lacking because it's not what I do, but you're right, anyone can drive to DFW and get probably whatever scene they want. Just stay overnight and don't drive impaired. BTW, I saw ZZ Top here in Tyler last year, and Ringo Star IN TYLER a few years ago.
Last con - some areas are old looking. Yep, every city is like that. Yep, you have to find the place in each city that you want to be. I find it fascinating how some cities grow to the north, some to the south, and the forces that drive that. Usually it's land pricing based on how water runs.
    Welcome to Tyler Ronnie.

I was born in 1947 in Tyler, raised there. One of the best days in my life was watching the city limits sign get smaller in my rear view. I was heading to greener pastures, Vietnam. I thought to myself, nothing wrong with Tyler that the death of a lot of the city fathers would not fix. They died, but alas, their kids apparently filled the role, no difference I am told. Now the grandkids are up to bat…I wonder? Will it be the same old bigoted, hypocritical Bible Trumppers? Living in Fort Worth by way of Houston, both are preferable!
