I have 4 pre 64 94 rifles. I haven’t tried federal ammo for many years. I have have 4 boxes of Core-Lokt ammo that are 10+ years old. They group very close in all 4 rifles. I haven’t tried the Winchester rounds for twenty+ years. They grouped very well in my rifles. I moved to Core-Lokts because they performed better on elk and black bear. I have taken 14 bull elk and 2 cow elk, 34 black bear and I don’t know how many mule deer with those old rifles. I would still be using them if my vision was good enough to shoot iron sights. For what it’s worth from an old timer thats my experience.

I agree with you on the Marlin 336 .30-30. It is so under rated these days. Thanks for showing what it can do with iron sights, which to me, it was made to be carried with. I tried a scope on mine, but felt like I was defiling it, so I put on skinner sights, and I am so happy how it carries and shoots. It was not to be a minute of angle rifle, but minute of deer rifle. I know that sounds cliché these days, but if you want a minute of angle rifle, buy a bolt action with a high powered scope and leave us old schooled guys alone. We will bring home the meat anyway. God Bless.

During the takeover by Vista Outdoor of the Remington ammunition plant, there were numerous reports of how much the quality of ammo had slipped due to poor plant maintenance - so much that plant production was only a small part of capacity. Vista has been working hard on that plant, and they have expertise and engineers from Federal, CCI, and Speer to draw on. The now have the plant producing at full capacity, and I'd expect the quality has improved too. Just have just introduced a new green ballistic tipped Core-Lokt 30-30 round I'd love to see tested.

I posted an analysis of this test, and the results are that the Federal and Remington ammo score identically. The problem is that a three shot sample size leaves too much room for user error. Even skilled shooters have predictable error. See my analysis of this test. CoreLokt is perfectly good ammo

I’ve got about 15 boxes of the federal 150, but I’ve always felt that Remington leaves better blood trails on deer. I bought the federal because it was cheaper and i like flat nose bullets better than round nose. I’ve been using the federal a for about 7-8 years now and so far they worked well. A couple years ago I took an 11pt whitetail that scored 138”.

After trying various ammo for my Marlin 336 is that my rifle handles the Remington Core-Lokt 170 gr. best. I consistently get 2" or less groups at 100 yds. and have never had a deer take as much as 2 steps after being hit with it. My longest shot over the past 5 yrs. (one kill per year) has been 150 steps, uphill, through relatively dense woods. When I fired, all I could see of the deer was the neck and head and he dropped with a perfectly placed neck shot. BTW, I do use a 1.5 x 4.5 scope.

  • @oldgoat1890

For every test you do with your rifle, someone else will get the opposite results with theirs. I bought a 99 Savage lever gun in .243 Winchester and did not want to start reloading for it. I bought the "Big three" ammo and went to the range. The Winchester threw about an 8" group @ 100 yards (With a scope). The Federal was worse! Both brands were really sticky when opening (Too hot) the lever. I thought I had bought a lemon. I tried the Remington and got a group you could cover with a quarter, and could flick the lever open with two fingers. Some Remington loads may be a little less accurate than others, but the thing that does not change with them is the Corlokt bullet. It is the BEST cup and core bullet out there. I have never had one fail to open up and do damage on either a soft spot or hitting a bone. This is from 15 yards out to 250 yards. Many of the newer bullets are only effective at certain ranges.

My supply of Winchester bullets dried up pre COVID and I was thrilled to get my hands on a case of the Remington SPCL 150's which will last me for the rest of my days. I was not surprised to see the results that you reported on your video with the Remington ammo performing so poorly. Winchester is hit or miss depending of the tier quality. Federal in general is consistent across the line, reliable and good and just gets better as you buy better tier ammo.

Carl Friedrich Gauss, a scientist, the greatest mathematician in history, and a surveyor, observed that the accuracy and error of his survey readings were mathematically predicatable. His readings fell on what is now called a Gaussian, or Normal distribution. You may know it as the Bell Curve.
Anyway, the mathematical analysis of Gauss’s formula results in Einstein’s formula for predicting error in statistical readings … like your gun grouping readings or a national poll on voting, for example. Einstein showed that 64% of the readings fell into an error called the “standard deviation”, which is calculated as being 1/SquareRoot (N) where N is the sample size … in your case the number of shots (3). So, with three shots, your expected error for 64% certainty is 1/SqrRt(3) = 58%. So, 4.75 +/- 58% for Remington and 1.18 +/- 58% for Federal. For Remington: 1.75 to 7.50 and Federal 1.07 to 2.43. So, the error bars, at 64% certainty overlap. That means the ammunition has identical accuracy. At higher degrees of certainty the ammo is even more similar.
Generally, you need to use the deviation from a central point … the bullseye, assuming you had adjusted the sights. Then you ignore the high and low numbers to adjust for abnormalities. If you shoot a large number of shots, you can leave them in. However, the point is that your test isn’t adequate enough to decide between Federal or Remington. You also shot Remington after Federal. Barrel warming can contribute, as can fouling. There are all sorts of variables not accounted for in this test.
I have no skin in this game. I shoot Winchester, Federal, Remington and hand loads in my Marlin 336C .30-30

Good on federal for that ... should add that the Winchester X and the Federal I did not need to re-adjust my scope but for Remington I have to.
Also as a side note the Winchester X 100 year anniversary in the yellow box I had to adjust for with my scope, a couple clicks down and also a four clicks to the left on my scope at 50 yards so that's a lot.

Rifles can be fussy about what they like. However sometimes the difference between best and worst at 100 yards isn't enough to make even the worst group unusable. Something to consider in an ammo famine. Point of impact is sometimes your biggest issue rather than the accuracy.

Interesting. My 336 has always done well with Remington 150gr. In fact, it was the best factory load until LeverEvolution came along. I haven't tried any of their going-out-of-business ammo, or any of their back-in-business ammo. I'll stick to hand loads except for the occasional factory load just for comparison. Sierra 125 gr and 150 gr are just too hard to beat, at least in my rifle. Others get their best from Hornady, or Speer, or Nosler, or other.

  • @johnnorman7708

In regards to point of impact differences in .30-30, I have observed as much as a two notch elevator difference on a 94 Winchester between factory loaded 170 grain CoreLokt and a top end hand load using 170 grain Hornady flat nose Interlock. That was a valuable lesson. If you are going to use various ammo, you need to make an effort to confirm point of impact.,

    • @johnnorman7708
      @johnnorman7708 Před 2 lety

@david wilson Brian Pearce did an excellent article on ..30-30 almost 20 years ago. I took note of the fact that at about 20 degrees Fahrenheit his 20" Winchester test gun wasn't even breaking 2000 FPS with some of the 170 grain factory loads. Typical reported speeds from similar guns was usually in the 2050 FPS range. I'm guessing the cold or his barrel or both had pulled that down somewhat. That certainly would kill deer all day at moderate (usual) ranges, but it also would change points of impact significantly if compared with loads that were doing what they should. I've seen groups between various .30-30 loads wander around the target at 100 yards noticeably. They are just different enough to show up on a target range. The reason few people ever see this is because the error isn't often enough to miss a deer out to 100 yards, and most people don't change ammo types or shoot at paper regularly with iron sighted .30-30s. They just go hunting with what worked last year....

I don't know what is going on with remington with its' financial problems. I may have to find another type of ammo. I still have some of the older ammo so it might not be an issue for a while. My Marlin 1894, 44 mag loves Win White Box ammo... 240 gr, RNSP

We also had very good and consistent performance with the core-lokt in the past. Their QC may have suffered when they found out they were going belly up. Who knows? Thanks for supporting our channel!

Not surprised. I have the same gun but in 35 Rem, and mine likes the Hornady best, with Federal blue box not too far behind, and the Remington a distant third. I will say that I’ve been more impressed with the Cor-lokt bullet on deer, though. Anyhow, I’m really hoping the Remington quality control has improved because I have a box of their 180g Core-lokt’s to try in my new Ruger American Predator in 308 Win. We’ll see real soon!

Marlin recommended sighting in at 25 yards after bore sighting . Did you you clean the barrel between shot an between the change of ammunition ? Now Federal Ammunition is making Remington Core Lokt ammunition! Suggest a do over, an some rifles prefer some ammunition over others an also prefer certain bullet weights over others try some 170s or. Some160s or 140s by Hornady!

@@BlackBearOutdoors My Marlin JM SS $5-70 Guide Gun drives tacks with the Hornady.
My pre 64 Win 94 30-30 likes the 170 Rem better than 150 by a bit but Win 170 has a tighter group.
The Hornady 160 Lever Evolutions group tight but pretty high.
The Remington 170 I had shot when I bought the rifle used did pretty decent with buck horns but not much later I was having sticky extractions and accuracy fell off. Perhaps a peep for the rear sight and give Vista some time to work things out and then maybe give Remington a go again.
Your rifle shoots 150 grain really well , surprising because so many Marlins love 170 Core - Lokts. Like you said -never know until you try.

Have a 2021 30-30 Henry, it groups 170 Remington or federal better than 150. Using holosun 2.MOA dot, 170s 1.5 inches at 100 yds, 150s 2.5 inches. Every rifle has a unique preference.

My Ruger 10/22 has more power than a M2 with Black tip ammo......it's TRUE! Bcuz it's MINE and I do not own a M2....
In all seriousness man excellent video. My Henry side gate 30-30 favors the Rem core loct 150. Leverevolution 160gr. 160 gr hard cast. 150 gr American white tail....then the 30-30!!! Became the most sought after round in America apparently costing 120-160 dollars a fckng box so I set her away for storage untill I can buy ammo here "in the real world again"
I'm going to set a leapers scope on her, any recommendations as to which model? Ya the Hornady LE 160's extend the range but she's no 338 so we both know extreme range isn't even viable

I put a 6.5 Grendel together about two years ago. Fortunately, I bought ammo before the big shortage. I bought Federal Fusion because it still had a lead tip on the bullet. I bought a couple boxes of Russian steel cased HP just to get it close on paper. The Russian ammo shoots just as good as the Federal Fusion. If it had a better bullet instead of a HP, I would just use the Russian ammo to hunt. Don't be misled by sales hype. A lot of these new "Super" bullets are really poor performers when hunting. Anybody that says he shot 5 deer "In the vitals" with a 30-30 and they all "Dropped right in their tracks" probably meant the tracks 60 yards away from where he shot it.
