- Nicolas Forzy is a graduate of the London School of Economics. He started his career as an investment banker, then spent time in the French Army as an officer on a combat helicopter base, before stepping into independent production in Paris then London. An award-winning filmmaker whose first feature film AMBITION was produced for less than U$20,000 and was distributed across three continents, Nicolas is now a professional screenwriter and producer. He has been based in the UAE since 2007 and has recently completed his first novel for young adults, titled ALPHANUMERIC.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Making a film can kill you, but a bad script can bury you. I love film, and I have seen a lot of it in my 40 years but the standard of films being made today is simply dire. I do believe you can make a film on a limited budget, but a lot of them are simply all style and no substance, storytelling is all over the place and we are then sold a 'canard' that this is the next big thing. I deal with people in the film industry who just don't watch enough films, or the ones that matter (in my humble opinion) and now we are left with Avengers 7 and other equally forgettable rubbish. Most of the films of the 60's/70's were made (in the English language) by real filmmakers who had a life outside the industry, read a lot, studied a lot (mostly not film) and that reflects in the films they made. Kubrick/Lumet/Coppola/Roeg/Loach all filmmakers who will, and stand the test of time, how many could you say about the current Empereor's with no clothes today. This is the real difference. Everyone believes they have real talent when in reality they don't know enough, about people in general, go out there and observe and experience life, it is there the real storytellers exist.
Marcus Maher I see what you're saying (I love 1970s cinema and all the directors you named) but there are a ton of great films made in the last 5-15 years. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Memento, Caché, Amour, Birdman, Whiplash, No Country for Old Men, In The Mood for Love, Her, Arrival, The Dark Knight, The Social Network, Inception, Under the Skin, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Nightcrawler, Drive, The White Ribbon, Enemy, Sicario, A Serious Man, District 9, There Will be Blood, The Master, Punch-Drunk Love, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, It Follows, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Boyhood, the Before Trilogy, Downfall, Yi Yi, Amélie, Two Days, One Night, Ida, Son of Saul, Embrace of the Serpent, I could go on and on.
I spent 15 years studying, practicing, making art, reading and honing my skills to make no budget films before even attempting to pursue working in the industry. I was convinced I had to know more to be on the industry's wavelength. Its great to hear someone else say this, because you have no idea how disappointing and frustrating it was to find 90% of the people working in the film industry couldn’t identify a Bergman film or tell me what their favorite Kubrick is or worse. It's not like these filmmakers are particularly underground, either. Meanwhile, the industry is obsessed with outshining new digital cameras, every single year. The tech is so unscrupulously surrendered to some superfluous idea of what's next, that aesthetics are being thrown away before they can even get a foothold. I know there are other factors, like the creation of the Multiplex in the 90s and etc, but this is an unspoken serious problem in the film industry. I like to use Game Of Thrones as an example, where 90% of the industry is trying to make the next Game Of Thrones (for instance), but cant identify the influence of Shakespeare, as well as Lord Of The Rings on Game Of Throne's writing / source material. Worse, the people trying to recreate such things would reject it's influences and then wonder why they cant reach the same heights. Its as simple as that. This is especially bad in the Indie Film World, where they should be trying to find a Low-Budget genius' like Sam Raimi, Cronenberg, David Lynch or a John Waters, but instead they are trying to produce something for Marvel fans, on a shoe-string budget and modeling their production on the philosophies of Jerry Bruckheimer. There are no Roger Corman's or William Castle’s anymore. Its sad.

My first feature film was in high school. I used the school band for compositions. I went to the drama club for actors. You do what you Gotta do when you don’t have the resources. However, the idea that people are fools is just cruel. They are not fools if they got something from it too.
I would question pursuing artistic endeavors on the wings of someone who grew up wanting to become a banker. Notice how many times he refers to money in these 12 minutes. He didn’t get into film to tell stories because he thought it’s the right thing to do, because he wanted to effect change, he realized that afterwards as means of making himself feel better about his failure, because from the start he got into film for the same reason he wanted to get into banking - for the idea of attaining power and recognition. Ultimately the same reason he failed which he never came to understand
Frank Smith's talk was polished and professional, something i guess you would expect in a film maker using other peoples money. But like others i actually found his self confidence off putting. I wonder if he realises he has this effect on some people.
I spent more effort analysing how he was producing this response in me than listening to what he had to say. Fascinating .......!

He went out and did it and that’s the most difficult part of the journey but where the business is going is if one wants to be a filmmaker then their gonna have to blow us away with their film. Because I will not go out of my way or waste my time watching a bore and nobody else will as well. So we’re moving into a new era…it’s not playing the game but it’s what you can do.

B) never go out of your own pocket
C) he certainly didn’t mention the number of really shifty distributors out there

WHY SO SERIOUS i understand both sides of the argument but he was badmouthing the people that helped him out for free but atleast he was honest
I don't get it...he isn't that good with jokes, and people took it the wrong way. He was just trying to get a laugh, and turned people against him. But I really don't get it, he clearly never had his actors carry equipment, and he most likely paid his crew (even if it was deferred pay).
Yeah, like the fact that directing / producing a film wasn't his passion. He hasn't done that in 15 years. Just check out his LinkedIn profile.

On film festival. Major European film festivals like Cannes, Berlinale or Venice have their markets, that's where people sell their movies and find distribution. Also, Toronto Festival and Santa Monica have big film markets

That's what i want to do. I want to make short film and post it on CZcams. Find volunteers cast that willing to work for free first and if the film make money we will share the money.

Pretty much what you can expect from a guy who has only been working independently, not making a leaving out of it. Worst TED talk I've seen.
I'm sorry but the budget for Ambition is set at around 1,000,000 pounds. That's a hell of a credit card...
FYI imdb budgets are rarely correct. Filmmakers often inflate/deflate that number for various reasons. You can write whatever you want in that field. Especially when it's an indie project.

4 hours of sleep on average, huh? Funny, because I'm one of those guys who can function just fine on 3-4 hours of sleep every night. That's just how my body functions even going back to when I was a kid. I researched that it's called short sleeping and it's just 1 percent of the human population that operates like this so it kind of makes me feel special. =)

I'm jealous, I believe it's from a larger hypothalamus, yes it does make you special and me slightly jealous.
I don't have this advantage but, with proper diet and a regimented sleep time, I have managed to squeeze it down to 5 hours and have been doing this for the 3 years. A few more years and i'll move it slowly to 4 hours of sleep.
Also, you are on the advantageous side of the biological advantage.
A small percentage have an OVERDEVELOPED hypothalamus, they need roughly 15-45 minutes of sleep(sometimes more but never more than 2 hours), they have a hard time paying attention, speaking with people, and learning in general.

This is the kind of attitude that ruins creativity and destroys collaboration. Is your actor's involvement bringing something more to your production than someone else can? Yes? Ok, good. Make them a producer and make them get more involved. If not, your real talent is everyone on set. Everyone. IMO it's collaborate or get lost. Stop it with this primadonna nonsense.

Cool, except that he hasn't produced or directed a film in 15 years.. So it clearly wasn't his passion. Sounds like he was simply bitten by some imaginary vision of glory and fame.
Long story short, he used a credit card to pay for everything and did a lot of the crew work himself. Lol! IMO, this was a useless Ted Talk.
