- This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. The ways that people are consuming films has changed radically especially over the last decade, but has the Hollywood business model kept pace? Frank Smith shares his ideas on the nature of change in the movie industry and its value in a personal sense and a business dynamic.
Frank Smith is chief operating officer of Anschutz Film Group (AFG) and Walden Media. Smith has been with AFG since 2003, but currently oversees all aspects of AFG's operations (development, physical production, publishing, marketing and outreach, finance, legal and business affairs). He also works directly with The Anschutz Corporation on strategic planning and general operational issues. During his tenure with AFG, Smith has been lead counsel overseeing large budget motion picture franchise projects, co-production finance and distribution deals with major studios, as well as structuring foreign corporations for multijurisdictional film production tax incentives.

To think only in money is not a good way of creating art, and if your movies are not art the public will get bored sooner or later

Enlightening talk. Change is happening in every industry. It seems that some specialize manual skills rule even though robotics in industry is making headway and jobs are being eliminated. In the film industry manual skills on set is safe. Camera dept, electrics, greens, carpentry, painters, costume designers, hairstylist, makeup artist just to name a few. Love my job as a hairstylist and wig designer, now I pass on my skills to those who want to get into the industry.

Hollywood is just street, we need to expand our definition as of what the film industry is. In fact, more movies and TVshows are being produced outside California. Furthermore, transmedia storytelling is evolving, the audience doesn't want to be glued to just one medium. Now more than ever, anyone with an idea and dream can make the next big flick, just take a look at Paranormal Active or even Blair Witch Project.
Actually, the idea boom has passed and that was at it's peak in the 90's during the bidding wars. Also the golden age of feature film. Now more than ever. You can not have an idea sold. Unless, what you meant was, having an idea, and shooting the film yourself with your own crew and out of your own pocket. Then, in that case, you are right. No one will buy an idea in Hollywood unless you're already well known and established in the business.

Though his talk is just two years ago, it's already outdated. I'd like to hear him do a apt. 2 of this talk; discussing digital delivery of movies from Netflix and others. His mentions of impress speed if Netflix arriving in his postal mail box might seem like a snail pace to today's instant gratification movie consumers getting their content immediately thru wifi . And if he did present a follow up Pt 2 that would probably be outdated within a year or so. As a film production worker and cinema owner I am really saddened by seeing the soul of quality films and the filmmaking process getting pushed aside by "new, improved" digital movies which are less and less a real cinematic experience. True cinema is seeing light projected thru film, at a cinema, a screening room or a real film home theater. I just can't accept the digital imitation of film. Maybe I am just an older,stubborn old filmworker/projectionist unwilling to change? I'm not alone.. Hey Quentin, pass the popcorn!

Thank you for Ted talks about this. I am a movie buff and a group in college Shakespeare in Company 9 I believe that we were going to take the world by storm. Now I am 43 and that never happened, but we have to compete with these beautiful woman nowadays and my time has come and gone to be a model even . My ears were alittle too big, I was not able to stay 90 pounds. I believe I should have moved to California when James Cran asked me to go to San Diego. I am stuck in Ohio. Thank you for addressing this when now they are spending an obnoxious amount of money here, and living like movie stars "are supposed " to be living. CAVS are doing well... something to do with that? Avengers I would say and bankrupting old money. I am a mother of five, in fact my son I had at 21 graduated with honors on Saturday. He has a fresh new start and I have to go back to college. My youngest is 8 years old. I was always compared to Mariah Carey, I have a pretty decent voice and had very long hair . I have brown eyes. I of coarse married a Greek who liked brown eyes.
I will find a movie buff and start talking with them about this. I believe some of it is human trafficking. Where your identity was easier to be stolen I believe a salary , is maybe even better. There might be world violence for a woman to get a 40 million dollar payout. New York is nearby to go do some soap operas. I can't keep the weight off...

Scouring the internet for industry facts, more focused on the independent film industry and good/free information has been hard to come by. If anyone has any recommendations or sources, I'm all ears. Nobody tells you, if you have a story you can hire an Editor to clean it up. My problem is, I have no marketing, I am unheard of and therefore, so is my story. There are a couple of outrageous matters the film industry refuses to address. Not just message and content. But if they depicted a reality based picture they would need every character glued to a cell phone. That's reality

I guess one needs to look at how competitive the market is. I mean, just open up your Netflix and you'll get flooded with movies and TV shows. If you've got big name actors, that helps with marketing. But if you've only got newcomers, how do you sell that to a wide audience? It is a tough market, I think. Especially because so many people are attracted to it!

Although I am from 3th countery world and an refugee in Germany, I dream all the to make my career in Hollywood.
it's sad that so many beautiful tales need to be told that are not being told too much anymore in Hollywood (it seems). the older days showed very meaningful stories that had many levels sometimes. taking in these stories improved my quality of life as i watched what they showed, thought about them, and began to understand more about life; especially the less commonly noticed, though extremely important aspects of life. idk why, but it seems that something went askew.
perhaps the types of films cater to the level of consciousness in the audience... as audiences have become more materially obsessed, soulless, self centered automatons without patient and careful wisdom, so do popular films begin to reflect this lack of thoughtful depth.
Because not all people are same as you. You must accept every people around the around have different taste. More people wants pop corn movies because of stress in life work etc. they only watch movie to relieve stress.
@@carloconopio6513 Films can appeal to BOTH audiences at the same time. I know it's foreign to imagine, but something can indeed be both an easy breezy popcorn flick while also having a great story too.

If you really believe that the tremendous rise in convenience in entertainment and countless other things is just something that occurred without the intent of someone to use it to foster a state in which NOTHING is special that used to be, then you have no idea what is REALLY going on in the world.
Thank you very much, my modest messages for the film producers could be something like those for instance: Make more art and less profit, try to be creative rather than commercial, create more anarchy and wisdom embedded inside of your films, don't try to lower down the current cultural level of the public that is so weak already, stop being corupted, end this barbie culture and instead try to create an intellectual society through your productions as much as you can.

Peter John. I don't understand your point. It isn't quantity that matters. It is the quality that succeeds. History is relevant if you are teaching a specific subject. It is important to cover the before and after to explain the here and now.

I think it ironic that Hollywood's genesis was 'get a story out there'. Wow audiences with drama, adventure, romance, horror, comedy. Be it silent, B&W, bad quality print playing in Poughkeepsie with a lousy piano player as the soundtrack - people want the illusion and the story!
Whereas today, it's 'the medium - rehash the message'. So concerned about 3-D, HD, BD, 4k, DVD, Streaming, Digital UV, Knock offs, torrents, Netflix, Amazon, etc. 101 ways to get ONE story. And what's that story...? A 50 year old classic, a remake of a 50 year old classic, a sequel to a 25 year old cult hit, a prequel to a 25 year old cult hit. 75 to 100 year old super heroes, on their own - or all together. For the last 20 years of Hollywood cinema, only 5% of it's overall output has been original and engaging stories. Imagine if that was the attitude when Hollywood started? "We'll just show Edison films and Woodrow Wilson over and over again. And we'll eventually add color and sound to them when the technology becomes available. And maybe combine Edison with Wilson like they were partners which will really excite audiences...." Anyone with a dollar to burn would NOT invest in that gimmickry and lack of creative substance. So why today...? Because Hollywood wants YOU to invest in that gimmickry and lack of creative substance. They don't want to give you a story anymore, they want you to GET the story. Find the Easter eggs, criticize or marvel at the CGI, defend it at the next comic convention. The ultimate proof of this - Tommy Wiseau. Literally he's taken every cliche from Hollywood, spent too much money, and over acted everything in The Room - and IT WORKS! Not that it works as a good story, or expression, or even shock value that John Waters sought after. A tragic romance with nice scenery and bad acting is all. And people worldwide LOVE it now! And Hollywood can breathe a sigh of relief, and follow suit with slightly more professionalism - but not THAT much.
And chop it up into seasons if it's really lacking anything worthy.

I agree to the extent that the focus is more on profit and less on art. Anytime you put the word "industry" behind something it all becomes about profit and padding your bank account as quickly as possible while the quality of your product diminishes. This is sad in film terms because it means that likely the quality of story and social consciousness that some films used to emphasize are gone in favor of violence, sex, noise, and whatever "quick fix" sensation can be replayed over and over again to keep people glued to their theater seats.
