The scariest part of this entire video is Childress trying to get Austin to talk to him. That's not an owner trying to reach his driver, that's a grandfather trying to reach his grandson.
could you imagine what must've run through Earnhardt Jr's head? seeing that wreck, having flashbacks to his dad's death, in the same numbered car, at the same track, in another last lap wreck. glad Dillion was okay and glad Earnhardt Jr. picked up that win.
I was thinking the same thing and when children's was saying talk to us and he wasn't responding i was thinking not again in the 3 car
In my opinion, if a driver dies in a race, their number should be retired
+Cool Monster Trucks At least the #3, he was the greatest driver ever, he died in the 3 car and they let some kid drive it...
+nathan waskiewicz not just some kid....a kid dale Earnhardt knew and a kid Earnhardt would be okay with driving that old number....a kid who won the truck championship 3 years in a row and nationwide championship his first year in it....dillon is a talented kid and I'm glad he's in that 3 car....and if we just retired numbers because drivers died in them....we would have no numbers left.....a nascar driver has died in nearly every number that is running now....nascar wants to keep their numbers under 100 for aesthetic purposes....Dale Earnhardt is immortalized in nascar history along with all the big names and even the smaller guys who died doing what they love....we just have to accept that numbers don't make the man, what he does on track in that number is what makes him a legend.
Harry Sheldon Wat m8... Dillon is only in NASCAR cause of his grandaddy. Only 1 number deserves to be retired and that's the #3. The Dillons are nothing special
Dale Jr: "Damn man, I was about to start crying. My heart was broken"
It's crazy to imagine all the emotions he went through at the end of the race.
tsr6 cuz his dad got killed in the #3 at the same track. Austin going airborne in the #3 at Daytona was no coincidence
And Dale had a hard crash in the 3 at Daytona and he hit the fence
Yeah I mean all Austin Dillion did was fly upside down and hit a catch fence going 190mph and then get hit again while he’s upside down. But ofc I’m sure Dale JR was worried about him so let’s make sure he’s okay
I can officialy say that racjng is 《《Expletive》》 stupid
That just proves how much the safety has improved with the fenses and the safer barreiers. So glad it has all improved.
Good job to NASCAR
Not just the barriers but the cars as well
True
@@cnnfan293 lots of expletives sounds
I would say not really in 2022
If Austin died i bet Dale Jr would be crying. Same car number same track same lap....
HuntDog044 -Video Games that's why he was on the verge of tears at the end of the video while talking to Jimmie about it.
Sheree Arend even if it wasn't a 3 car that Austin would have died in he still would have been crying
HuntDog044 -Video Games Yea he probably would have cried regardless
I bet NASCAR would of shut down temporarily.
I bet the #3 car is cursed at Daytona ever since dale sr. Died
The #3 is freaking cursed. Retire the hell out of that number.
31,44,15,1,28,4....they are all cursed....drivers died in many numbers but those specific ones are just bad luck for any driver
I was about to type the same thing.
Harvick got a championship in the 4.
Skyshun Leblanc yeah move AD into the 33 instead
Skyshun Leblanc bill wurtz is cursed too almost no videos since this comment was made
I'm so glad that Austin's wreck wasn't fatal. When it was at the moment when he said "austin you ok? Austin talk to us" I wasn't sure he was alive. I was scared. it was tense and if he died, what would Ty have been like...
ManderEveryMinute well, Ty was freaking out just from what happened as it wasn't fatal. Would've been much worse if it was fatal
You can hear the fear in his voice not only was it his driver but also his grandson.
@@kaylafuller8948 That 3 car would have been retired. For good.
This is the most emotional I've ever been before. Hearing all the spotters crossed with the wreck just made my heart sink.
Wesleyem3 they all lived :/
Dale's reaction to that scares me every time... I don't know why. Watching this live was scary as is, but listening to everyone's point of view is even scarier. My god...
Michael_SK Yeah, I would say Jr's reaction on the radio was the most stomach-churning. And then RC saying "Austin, talk to us!" tore at my heart as well, thinking about Dale Sr.
CrazyxRandomxGirl It looked like Austin had similar wreck like Dale sr. in the 1990s @Daytona...
History repeats it's self. Daytona is just a scary place to race
+Michael_SK Probably reminiscing his father.
+Calypso87 he probably was. Same numbered car.
Logano: ''I hate this racing''. Wins Daytona 500.
JG24Racing What does that have to do with it. Kyle Busch won the first Car of Tomorrow race at Bristol 2007 and still said he hated it. Surprisingly (at least in Kyle's case) they both didn't care that they won. That is great sportsmanship. Also the only case of good sportsmanship Kyle Busch has ever shown.
Guy Perkins how is that good sportsmanship? I beat everyone and am gonna cry because I won a race because I didn’t have fun. If I was in his position, I would have been ecstatic.
People saying Brad purposely hit Austin need to get over Texas. Brad clearly went to break and lost the car, sliding into Austin. Brad is an aggressive driver, but not evil.
BrokenGames|Road To 200! Do you know what he said
Karina Seeley he said oh my God i probably killed him fucking shit.
Uriah Gibson thanks!
Where's the link to find it
Dillon Murway There is none.
3:21 Ahh, so the cameraman that was awfully close to the fence and point of inpact was FOX crew, epic shot but damn that's too close!
I think he just dropped the camera
***** we would have known about it if he had got killed. He sure was dangerously close to the impact though.
When the camera fell, that made the wreck even more scarier...
im pretty sure it was a stationary camera and the force from the impact knocked it over
no, austin was long passed the camera, and you can see it in the live shot, the camera man fell, and, idk if it was accidental or instinctly, pulled the camera down with him.
Every time I see a replay of that wreck, I cringe because that could have been one of the worst, if not the worst, crashes in NASCAR's history. Honestly, I don't think I have ever been so scared in my life. This is a consequence of racing. They sign up to do this and they know something like this can and will happen. As much as I love pack racing (not for the wrecks, but for the racing itself), I hate to see something like this after the finish. But, this shows the safety that has evolved in this sport. However, Dillon was lucky to have not gone into the catchfence upside down. That would have been, and I hate to say this, a fatal crash if that had happened. The catchfence did it's job, but nearly cost a drivers life. The car itself proved its worth as well. No one, and I mean no one, should walk away from a crash like that. Although I'm not a big fan of Dillon, I am glad that he was able to walk away and is going to be with us longer.
***** If that car went roof first into the fence it could have ended up like Russell Phillip's fatal crash at Charlotte
***** You gonna finish your last sentence?
aquariex24 Even though I obviously finished it?
You forgot the period.
***** I was so afraid. When I first saw the wreck I didn't know that he hit the fence I just saw Hamlin's car burst into flames. When I saw all the crews run to Dillon's car I thought the worst. I was so scared
Definitely a scary race. Big Junior fan here and I stood up for the whole thing, but it's was one of those races where it doesn't matter who won, you're just worried for everyone's safety. Been watching NASCAR for a long time and I've NEVER seen anything like that.
I've seen some nasty wrecks in my time watching NASCAR, but that is definitely one of the worst I've ever seen.
PhenomenaL40 Dale sr. had a similar wreck like Austin Dillon's at Daytona once...
+Zach Fisk that along with the Geoff Bodines truck wreck here. that to was so terrible. but they both made it out alive. stuff like Earnhardts wreck never made sense to me after seeing way worse.
TheJrMizzGamingLounge Earnhardt SR didn't wear his HANS device.
ChaseElliottfan 24ever it wasn't invented yet until after that event, sadly that's why he died
Being there live and seeing Jr's crew give the crowd a thumbs up was one of the biggest reliefs I've ever had in my life, especially since I was also there live for the original #3's last race when I was 5 :(
I see these kinds of crashes on CZcams all the time but seeing it live was... different it scared the crap out of me! Glad to see everyone is fine!
Michael Brown I watched a replay of Kyle Larson's wreck, and felt nothing. I didn't see it live. I saw Dillon go into the fence, and I was freaking out.
Because Larson went in at a different angle than Dillon
+AM Gaming Same.... I thought he was dead. just thinkk we just lost Justin Wilson
Five years later, Daytona shows its colors yet again when Ryan Newman is sent airborne right before the start/finish line.
@@acedelta12 oh man, the last reply tagged me with +AM Gaming, good memories. And yeah, I saw the Newman crash lice as well. As a life long Newman fan it was tough sleeping for the next week even though he was released 2 days later. It kept replaying in my head over and over whenever I closed my eyes to sleep... absolutely terrible
3:49 Everybody okay back there? SLAM
Aside from the unfortunate wreak, the 48/88 raced one exciting battle. I loved those two all night.
1:33 Clint bowyer 😂😂
god...even now re-listening to this after it already happened 2 years later,i may not be a NASCAR fan but hearing the owner of the 3 car begging Austin to talk to him just hits me hard. it was nothing but a Miracle that Austin survived that crash,Dale Sr must of been watching over him
Crystal sanchez the sad thing was that the driver who crashed into the catch fence was his grandson.
Unbelievable no one was killed.. I love the plate races, but that is just insane..
Modern nascar is really safe! I’m still in shock since he had nearly no injuries
Man watching those team members run over to Austins car in a panic show that teamwork is key to everything. Everytime I see this I start to tear up. I am so glad he made it out alive and unhurt. I remember this race all too well.
just hearing the panic in RC's voice scares me still
You can also hear the relief in his voice when they told him Austin got out of the car
Wow, that ending was heart pounding! Great editing by the folks over at FOX to but that scary montage of the final wreck together.
From what I heard, they decided to scrub Brad Keslowski's (#2 car) radio audio cause they were saying he was an absolute wreck, and kept rambling since he thought he just killed Austin Dillon.
Dude, we should have heard that.
The first time I saw that wreck. I thought the number 3 had claimed another life.
man god bless Jr. i woulda been in tears thinking of that #3 car
Jackson Harvey why be in tears he's just a whiny baby trying to erase the memory of the great Dale Earnhardt the real #3 not that cry baby.
david white Whiny arrogant hater
david white seriously? HE HAD A WORSE IMPACT THAN DALE! HE DESERVES TO BE REMEMBERED! IF IT WAS IN 2001 LIKE DALE SR' S WAS, HE WOULD HAVE DIED!
The remnants of Dillon’s car are displayed at Bass Pro in Springfield, MO. the entire car is crunched up except for the driver’s seat. Really eerie to see in person but a real testament to how far NASCAR has come in terms of safety.
Imagine what Richard was thinking?
Same number, same car, same place......
Not quite the same place I don’t think. Same track yeah, but I think dale crashed on turn 4
3 IS A MAGIC NUMBER. JUST LOOK AT THE OTHER COMMENTS
Brayden Taylor 3 likes
Thanks Fox for keeping these going. I really enjoy hearing the crews.I look forward to them every week and glad you guys still are doing it even with NBC doing broadcasts
Carl Edwards: "Checkers or wreckers."
Daytona: "Both is good."
At the finish line was very scary race. But thank god Dillon was okay.
Have a good night tonight.
*Flies into catchfence*
Every single time I watch this crash it gives me the chills
3:27-4:06Gives me the chills
Props to Dale for not celebrating till he knew the outcome of the crags. *cough Denny*
Junior has class unlike any of The Arrogant Gibbs Drivers
Holy shit! 1:52 Sam almost went over!
Surprised he didnt
+Bot pixel They didn't even hear from Sam. Must have not been as entertaining as Raines.
I was at this race. Cool to see the audio from it now.
That race ran till about 2:30am I believe. Stayed up to watch it and couldn't sleep because of that crash. Man I'm glad Austin is okay. Love watching that kid in that number 3 car.
Dale Jr. is one of the most sincere nice guys in sports
*the catchfence is killed... and it scared the crap out of Dale Earnhardt Jr. WHY RESTRICTOR PLATES!?*
Its not a restrictor plate problem...it was just a matter of circumstances....he just happened to hit a car just the right way to get in the air like that....the flaps keep cars on the ground EXCEPT under certain circumstances
the restrictor plates made it safer. without it, dillion would've hit the fence around 205 instead of the 180-190ish he hit it at
Why!? Why does everyone always say that a thing is something else to ME!?
+TheSuarez19 //NASCAR because it's true
Idc
This had to bring back bad memories for Dale Jr and Richard Childress, especially the later because he was radioing his grandson the same way he radioed Dale Sr in 2001.
Props to the people who build these cars. So so glad Austin was ok.
Damb I am glad Austin Dillon is ok. That would be scary af
1:27 Clint Bowyer: The Caution Is Out
i can't imagine the sheer terror that RC was feeling after seeing his own grandson almost die
he went through the same thing when Dale Sr died, it's like a nightmare just came back
“How about the grandstands” you know that made me teary a lil bit cause the drivers willingly accept the possibility of something like this happen when they get behind that wheel…the fans how ever do not, they can’t help or predict a car flying into sold out stands at 200mph….him caring for the fan’s safety means a lot
I was in that race once I saw Austin Dillon flip I did not even care about who got the win I cared about who CRASHED
Then I saw Brad coming in then I saw the number 3 I'm like OMG is HE DEAD
dude which driver are you
+Seth Morris He's not a driver. I promise you.
+Seth Morris he was probably saying that he was watching the race in the stands
Seth Morris When Brad came in, everybody was already almost or at turn 1 so he couldnt have seen it if he was a driver.
2:25 well he called it.
ryan newmans wreck this year reminds me so much of this wreck right here and the reactions of everyone was the same as this...scary
ya that last lap crash scared the hell out of me when i saw that that night especially after he took a second hard hit from brad i thought he was dead thank god for the advancements that nascar has made on safety
1:04 YAY! HE'S NOT BEING A BABY!
"I can now say this racing is fucking stupid" -Joey Logano 2015 Coke zero 400
And that same racing won him the Daytona 500. Lol
+Jorden Gillespie all of the drivers are yired of restrictor plates
+IanNascar48 He's a rich boy that complains about everything that doesn't go his way. While other drivers learn to suck it up.
IanNascar48 every single driver hates restrictor plate races.
HeathNation2465 I hate Logano but lets be real here every driver hates restrictor plate races and has been vocal about it. Gordon talked about it this year even
That wreck was deja vu like crazy even though I have seen that wreck so many times I just can’t stop and think about 2001
Watching this back now is still scary. Thank NASCAR for safety improvement.
It's been a month and a half. A month and a half and this wreck still gives me the chills it gave when it first happened. Hearing the drivers' concern. Hearing the fear in Richard Childress's voice trying to make sure his grandson was okay. It's just an unreal situation that unfolded. Honestly, one that I don't think will have its impact toned down any time in the near future for NASCAR. The cars, the tracks, the sport is getting safer. But, this type of crash is never going to be completely avoidable. It's a risk drivers take racing at this speed and one fans take by attending the race. Hopefully this won't happen again any time soon. Glad everyone was alright in the end.
+BottleRocket13 Watching this two months later and I get choked up. The sport will get safer due to their history of innovation, but will this type of racing get safer? Restricting the cars more will remove excitement, yet increase safety. Removing all restrictions is also a bad idea. It's a risk to race at high speeds, but it's a death wish to race at 200mph with cars all around you. One bad move, one mistake... many things happen. But yeah... this was scary nonetheless. Richard Childress got me the most emotional... behind him was Jr and how he felt towards the accident. We can only hope this doesn't happen again.
+Michael_SK Oh yeah, the sport will do everything it can to make things as safe as possible. They've shown what they can due with their drastic and positive changes over the past 15 years alone that have, and I can guarantee this, saved many driver lives in that span since Sr's death. It's something they do surprisingly well. Unfortunately, the only thing they can do to make this type of racing safer, is to slow them down. But at the same time, I'm sure they realize that doing that to Dega and Daytona is shooting the sport in the foot. They know these are the two most watched tracks probably in the entire series because of how tight and exciting the racing gets. But, as you pointed out, that's where all of the problems stem from. One small mistake like Harvick pushing Hamlin up, then Hamlin trying to hold it straight on the point of the track where the car is lightest, can spark something. Something as big as this if they're right at the front of the pack. There's just nothing you can do to avoid it. Racing is racing after all. They've pretty well solved the issue with car turning backwards and getting air, but it's nearly impossible to stop them from launching off of another car or rolling if they're hit at the right angle and speed in the rear corner panel. It's just plain impossible if you're running faster than 150 mph really. It'll definitely be intriguing to see if they'll make any changes come next season, but I don't really see what they can do about it. They've been working on newer, safer cars since Dale Sr's death and implemented an aerodynamic package that wouldn't bump draft too much at the Super Speedways. We saw Dillon walk from a 200mph-0mph collision like nothing. The fence kept his car on the track despite the sheer force of the impact and very few fans were hurt. Really, everything did its job and did it well beyond expectations. I guess we'll see come next February!
You can hear the concern in Richards voice. You can tell that Richard was thinking "I will NOT lose another one here."
+ShadowStarz83 yeah.
heck yah jr glad Dillon is ok
I was there and when it happened it scared me and gave me chills it was my first nascar cup race
“Austin, you alright?! “Austin, talk to us!!!!!!!” Gives me the chills every time. If that 3 car had gone upside down into the catch fence, he would’ve been trapped and not able to get out and another possible fatality in the 3 car. Retire that car, STAT!
0:53 that aged well huh
3:25 the wreck
holy shit those new angles are wicked especially the one where the camera fell wow
After I seen this wreck the first time when I was watching it on NBC I swear I could see a perfect vision of Dan Wheldon's crash at Las Vegas in 2011. I have never been more scared or traumatized with a wreck so severe like this. Thankful that Austin walked away from this wild and horrible crash. Hopefully the fans that were injured on that night are doing better and okay now. I hope we don't see another horrible crash like this again.
People are saying "this is one of the worst crashes in history" but, I would not even put it in the top ten. For instance the 2012 pocono race, when Elliot Sadler hit the inside wall.2001 Daytona 500, Adam petty'a louden crash, mike harman's Bristol crash, Kyle bush's xfinity Daytona crash. The worst crashes are head-on, not in the catch fence
I respect your opinion but the reason why they say it's the worst crash in history is because the fans could have been hurt in the crash
Devon Barry Sorry but that crash is among the worst like it or not
It is worse than most crashes in NASCAR, but head on/driver side crashes scare me more than stuff like this
Half the crashes you named weren't even scary? How long have you been watching the sport? Dale's crash wasn't even scary, it's was just a sad circumstance controlled by the guy above. This is definitely Top 3 of scariest crashes ever.
Even Elliot Sadler's crash. I have watched NASCAR since I've been alive (2001) the catch fence crashes don't scar my as much as head on. I was just stating my opinion
0:16 you do not know what he is in for
Holy crap...I saw this race live...man, I was almost crying when I saw that...shows how much safety we have these days.
these are just so epic!
Can we have tandem drafting back? Its been a while since we had a close finish at a plate track.
BrokenGames|Road To 200! highly agree
BrokenGames|Road To 200! They could get close finishes if they allowed bigger spoilers, it would punch a bigger hole in the air for cars to draft off of.
BrokenGames|Road To 200! Not to mention that the larger spoiler actually makes it more difficult to pass. A lot of drivers are complaining that it makes the "dirty air" more pronounced and basically stalls the trailing car once it gets to the rear bumper of another car. The racing would be better if they got rid of the spoilers altogether.
BrokenGames|Road To 200! YES!! I LOVED the tandem drafting. I was sad when they did away with it. It forced everybody to race hard every lap. I hate how there is a second pack of cars just hanging out in the back. Tandems could actually pull away, and it left them no choice but to try to keep up.
saadesigner07 Yeah, at least make it like 2012, where you could tandem draft, but if you push the wrong side into the corner, you'll turn the guy in front. It'll keep the drivers on their toes. HOWEVER, the guys who got to test the 2016 rules package over the winter said that the way the cars handled was like that of 15 years ago, so maybe there's hope.
What pit crew ran out to help Dillon? I don't think it was his crew
KevlarKev judging from 3:59 I'm pretty sure it was Dale's, Kasey Kahne's, and Casey Mears'
Dale jr's for sure.
KevlarKev all of the closest ones
KevlarKev Casey Mears
KevlarKev I saw jrs mears and someone's else's crew
That wreck was AWSOME
The music used for Austin Dillon's wreck was also used in Carl Edwards's 2016 crash at Miami.
God, the piano version of "Escape from Darkness" is such a mentally disturbing song due to the events it's associated with...
That wreck with Austin was almost a complete copy of dale Earnhardt sr death (gives me the creeps cuz the both drove the #3 car
***** let's just hope it doesn't happen again to any other driver
Even two years after this accident and I watch this video I'm surprised he survived.
Ok I know this comment is 2 years old, but no it wasn't almost a copy. Dale Sr. 1 O'clocked into turn 4 then got hit simultaneously, Austin flipped into a catchfence, two completely different wrecks.
Did you even se sr. Wreck.
That was nothing like it
Oh no, Austin Dillion’s wreck was a lot worse then sr’s had Earnhart wrecked like that in his fatal accident, he would of been mangled due to old safety features. Or lack there of
3:53 Childress sounds like he watched his grandson die
That wreck was just insane what scarey thoughts for Earnhardt Jr and Richard Childers
3:21 most famous catch fence wreck and dale jr win ever
Joke: Austin became a plane.
All jokes aside, that was horrible crash. Felt the terror in Richard Childress’s voice.
The Camera Man At 3:26 (That Fell) Was He Ok
N1SC4R i hope he was...
Not allowed Stop trying Ok 👍👍👍👍👍
Was anyone listening to Brad's radio when he ran into Austin? People are saying it was really intense. Can anyone remember what was said? Or is there an archive of in car audio for past races somewhere?
Smile4me1214 he tweeted that he hit the brakes and the car just spun out
Smile4me1214 it look like that once Brad saw the car he immediately tried to slow down but their was oil n the track and it just spun
Right. I meant what was Brad saying on the radio? I've seen people saying whatever Brad said was too intense to play in the Radioactive video. That he was freaking out. So I was just really wondering what was said that was so intense.
Smile4me1214 he said oh my god I probably killed him fucking shit
Xodus/Mistic Lots of oil on the track will cause that. Brad probably hit fluid on the track...you can see that he's already out of control on the replay before it focuses on the 3.
2018 Daytona 500 champion ad=Austin Dillon
The reactions of all the drivers and the crew chiefs and the pit crews really made the wreck as scary as it was. Especially when Richard Childress said, "Austin, talk to us!"
Lol 1:00 that's what she said
Lol
They all thought the witnessed the death of Austin Dillon 😂
Thereal Games I AM HEAVILY OFFENDED DO NOT LAUGH ABOUT THIS WRECK AUSTIN ALMOST DIED!!!
You think this is funny...?
gahhhh I forgot how scary that was. hearing all the spotters too with it made it crazier
I Like how dale jr's pit crew went out to help austin dillon after that terrible crash
great sportsmanship.
I agree with Joey at the end NASCAR racing is stupid
Well, that was pointed more toward the 500 he might hate racing, I don't know, but a lot of the drivers are not fans of Daytona becuse the turns are steep enough that they don't have to slow down that much at all, so that makes the crashes suck a lot more for them.
Well that's a great statement. *sarcasm*
Not as stupid as F1, Rally and Indy racing....all three are way more dangerous than nascar, especially F1 and Indy with their stupid open cockpit design which has killed and or seriously injured many drivers even very recently....all in all, yes nascar is stupid but its one of the safest motorsports in the world
Then why are you here?
I was watching this race on TV and I was absolutely terrified.
Crazy that he survived that crash! I'm glad.
I love Jr's reactions. He's a real man and human being.
A great thing hearing everyone's concern over that wreck. Just like Allisons and Edwards wrecks at Dega, the catch fence DID do it's job and held that car inside. Damn scary though.
This was very emotional to watch (live and video, but you gotta admit that 4:05 was kinda funny with him yelling to stop...
And I knew Austin was gonna go in the catch fence because of the way Denny turned
crazy to think that this was 5 years ago
Holy crap! The shrapnel flying at the 88 crew at 3:44...
I swear, I saw this live on TV, and I thought I’d just seen another #3 go to Heaven. One of the scariest crashes in history. Thank God, Austin was okay.
"He stopped dead nuts in the fence." - best quote
i wacthed that wreck unfold as it went on... scared the living daylights out of then... and it STILL does scare the living daylights out of me... but man... Daytona night racing is fun to watch and one day... i'd love to experience it in person.
Didn't see those angles before...holy shit! I'm surprised Austin Dillon was able to walk away from that. Also notice how everyone's concern is for potential injuries first.
Adam Moreira maybe there was an angle in hus car that angle was Dale Sr
Cory McGUCKIN ok?
My reaction was just "OH MY GOD" but I couldn't start yelling because it was almost 3 in the morning...Clint Bowyer's "caution" comment is gold though
When I saw that wreck my stomach dropped. After watching it over and over time and time again, I wondered what Austin's wife was thinking.
i was at this race. that wreck happened right in front of me. i still look back at the photo i took of the destroyed catch fence and think about how lucky i am that it was able to keep debris out of the grandstands.
