RR lived across the street from a close friend throughout my childhood. In my experience, and those of others whom I know, he was a very warm and engaging man. Although we were aware of what we assumed his lifestyle to be, and some of the resulting challenges that he faced, in Southern California it was common and ubiquitous, and not much of a factor for most. I remember thinking that he must have been a lonely man in that big house, despite being one of the most well known and well liked actors of the time.

I had no idea that he was a student at The Royal Academy Of Dramatic Arts in England. Alot of US Alumni attended there from Tamara Braun who played reese on All My Children who was part of the first Lesbian Wedding on a Soap Opera. Other alumni were Gillian Spencer who worked behind and in front of the Camera as Daisy on All My Children, and a Writer as well not to mentin Another World. Ray McDonnell who played Dr. Joe Martin was the only "original" male actor who was on the show from 1970-2011. He was amazing in Roots.

Robert Reed found it very hard to do the Scene in Roots where as William Reynolds sold of Kizzy for knowing how to read and write and forged a Travelling Pass for her boyfriend Noah. He had given up his parental rights to his daughter Karen because he felt as a Gay Man, he couldn't be a proper Father.

The Brady Bunch got 'green lighted' after the huge success of Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda's 1968 film "Your's, Mine and Ours." Sherwood actually had the idea for The Brady Bunch years earlier, in 1963, even before Gilligan's Island, but TV execs thought the idea of a blended family too far out, so it was iced for several years. Although the series has had the overused word 'groundbreaking' used to describe it per the blended family, that was short-lived. In reality the sitcom had much more in common with '50s & earlier ''60s predecessors, 'Ozzie and Harriet' and 'The Donna Reed Show'. It was perfect for the '70s, that (after the tumultuous '60s) was a decade that wanted to BE the '50s more than anything. So it was the right show at the right time. Whatever faults Reed had with the show, feeling it was 'beneath' him, he really cared about the 6 kids and was very good to them.
It can be very hard on a Shakespearean trained 'high-end' actor (or actress) to find they've made their fame and fortune on something they didn't care for. This was also true for actor Jack Cassidy who though got some great TV roles, struggled for years not hitting 'the big time'. He was frustrated (and jealous) of his son David's overnight success on 'The Partridge Family'. To add salt to his wounds, David got a feature in LIFE magazine AND a cover, which had always been a dream for Jack himself never realized. (For those who not familiar with LIFE, it was a weekly mid 20th century large-size picture news magazine that carried more weight and status than any single fleeting unimportant medium of today does). So he sees his son getting this major honor barely one year after starting on 'Partridge' and felt it was unfair to him who'd worked so hard for years. It no doubt contributed to Jack's drinking, smoking and unfortunate death in 1976 at only age 49.

I once heard from somebody who had a book on the Brady Bunch, that has a few episodes messed up, said that when the bully's father would not do anything about it, according to the book, Mike beat up the bully's father off camera.

I can appreciate his desire for realism, but it was basically an escapist show, the fantasy family that lots of people would like to have. Some have blamed Mr. Brady as an architect for having six kids share one bathroom, but only three boys were sharing it before Carol and the girls moved in. Besides, we don't know that Mr. Brady designed it.

Robert Reed proved that He was a Great actor, But also emotionally trapped by a five year contract! I always heard that Robby Rist aka Cousin Oliver was the start of Reed's Major Problems with the show as well as final Fifth Season Episode: "The Hair-Brained Scheme" Was the last straw for Reed Not taking part in any of the last episode show's filming! Reed, Always did rub me the wrong way because I could always sense a disliking in him for some reason! If the Brady Bunch after a Five year Season Run was all that bad, He sure had no problems showing up for other related things later such as The Brady Bunch Variety Hour as well as Three Reunion Movies! Reed played a Great Father Figure! But to me a Better Villian! He did so many other shows as well as movies! HIV Pretty much triggered his colon cancer death. To Me! Brady Bunch will always stand as a #1 Hit on the TV Charts and Is So More Hiley Watched and Loved Now more than Ever.

Having a “Prefect Family.” You can have a family who are kind carding , but having one who none of the kids never gets into trouble, being rel kids. Marcia , I forget her name, maureen McCormick? I just can’t see every sibling telling the parents they broke the vase. So Peter can go on his camping trip. and he had to assign punishment to the other kids and they did them so Peter can go. And, of course, at the time Peter is about to go to the car to leave he broke the vase. I just don’t think. Most families would act like that. If he wanted to do Shakespeare, then by all means, he should have done so and to get it out of his system. Nothing worse than being frustrated. I get the impression he never found a loving relationship and felt isolated. No one acts up without an underlying cause. He used coldness to cover up for his sadness.

First of all, so-called "Robert Reed" wasn't even his real birth name? I think it's a disgrace and shows complete disrespect of one's heritage to change their birth name, unless when a woman gets married. If a woman gets married and DOESN'T change her last name, that shows no respect to her husband. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the name "John Robert Rietz Jr"?! The change was probably made as the result of a greedy Business Manager, with respect to perceived anticipation of greater recognition and subsequent monetary gain?!

Most likely the change was made as the result of a greedy Business Manager, with perceived notions of greater recognition accompanied with monetary gains? In reality, it's also shows blatant disrespect for one's parents & their family heritage, just to possibly obtain (not earn) a greater buck?!

Narrowed down to the one essential meaningful fact ...
Robert Reed hated the Brady Bunch because he believed it was far beneath his acting skills. True enough. But that reason alone isn't enough to hate it.

@@karenharris722 - It's been said that the reason Robert Reed did not leave the Brady Bunch is because he knew the young actors, the kids, were having a truly great life changing experience as young actors, and he didn't want to ruin that opportunity for them.
