I did this exact same thing as temps here in central Arkansas dipped below freezing for a night or two. $250 for a 50ft heated water hose, yeah no. $50 from Lowe's and roughly an hour later and I was done. I too was a bit worried about the 27-31 ft length and "needing" 50'! The heat thankfully carries through the unwrapped length just fine. It's still wrapped in insulative foam.
The only thing I can tell I did differently than you, was while the instructions stated to place the "thermostat" against the "pipe" if you re-read the instructions/warnings it states it only works on "metal" pipes etc etc. I was unsure how it would work, so I looked at my neighbors hose who bought a prebuilt expensive one and it's thermostat was also not on the hose but loose, so I ran with that in mind.
Long story short I left my thermostat outside of the pipe insulation which allows it to kick on/in when the air temp reaches around 35-38 degrees which is when the "thermostats" are typically pre set to kick on. Worked like a champ, glad to see yours did as well! We're do for more freezing temps this weekend.

Great feedback. Thanks for sharing. That makes perfect sense. I may need to go adjust mine.

Thanks for your video. We tried this method and it worked great.. Along with dripping the faucets. We did take the advice of another comments and slightly exposed the thermostat and it seemed to work fine.

My hose hookup comes straight out of the ground, and it keeps freezing before it reaches the rv even though i insulated it. Gonna try the heated cable to unfreeze it today.

Will the heat tape not start to melt and smolder the pipe insulate and cause a fire?

I moved the filter to the other end of the hose, inside the rv compartment by the intake value. no freezing there.

Nope, not since I have made this hose! It works so great I actually forgot it was there during our last freeze

Anyone done this for 0* degree temps?

Last year, here in Troy, Alabama, on February 15th through 17th, it got down to 0 degrees at night. But it did warm up to the low 20's during the day, and we were back up to the 50's by the 18th. It kept my water flowing under those conditions, but don't know if that is that the environment you were asking about.

@@WattsWayFarm perfect, we winter camp at grand Canyon every year. Exact weather 0 degrees at night and mid to high twenties in the day. 👍
