    TIMESTAMPS BELOW!
Many of the most influential Vice Presidents in United States history have gone on to become Presidents, among their many accomplishments. Men like Lyndon B. Johnson and Theodore Roosevelt were called upon to take over the Oval Office after Presidents were assassinated, while VPs like Gerald Ford took the highest office due to scandal. However, men like Walter Mondale significantly changed the office of the vice president. WatchMojo chooses the ten most important Vice Presidents of the United States.

Media is the one that made him look like an imbecile, and he took advantage of this so that he could further do what he sought as people would blame it on his intelligence rather than be concerned about his ethics. To add, despite people hating Bush, excluding the war, the majority of his choices were popular and liked by the public.

this entire list is misinformed, teddy roosevelt even admitted he had no contribution as vice president. he's just number one because he's a great president. also many of these guys were just famous because they eventually became presidents, while none had that much clout until the 60s-70s with walter mondale etc... simply because the power of vice-presidents was extremely limited until ike eisenhower and so on gave more cabinet power to them. apparently it was because Ike learned about how truman had absolutely no inside in the presidency and only met fdr TWICE! he literally relied on his guts to become a successful president. but still, that shows how powerless vps were until the last 60 or so years.

George H.W. Bush should have ranked at least within the top five.
      (1) Bush was able to balance the ticket as Reagan's Vice President, after losing the Presidential nomination in 1980...LBJ provided a similar balance in 1960.
      (2) Bush was able to expand the role that Vice Presidents had as a senior advisor, ambassador-at-large, legislative liason, etc...
      (3) Bush served two full terms as Vice President, the first VP since Nixon (1953-1961).
Truman was Vice President for three months, but had little effect on policy during his time in office. Truman had one major assignment from FDR: to get former Vice President Henry Wallace confirmed as Secretary of Commerce.
TR was Vice President for six months with no major duties assigned in his time in office. But, he also was the first accidental President to be elected to a full term in office.
      (4) Bush provided continuity whenever the President was ill...Presidential Power was transfered to the Vice President for the first time when he was VP.
      (5) Bush was the ONLY incumbent Vice President since 1836 to be elected as President of the United States.

I agree Henry Wallace should probably take Cheney’s spot. And actually FDR really liked Wallace but the Democratic Party wanted someone else and since he was considered “liberal” for the time it would seem as if a bad choice to put him in vp because Roosevelt’s health was very scary. Nonetheless he probably would have been a better president than Truman.

I agree, though if you see this go back and correct your spelling on the first name lol
It's unfortunate the Democratic Party dumped him considering he was anti-segregation among other progressive views for the time. You can't say Harry Truman ended up being a bad choice considering how he turned out, but Henry Wallace probably could've been the greatest president of all time given his open-mind and level head.

I loved the video but I strongly question the choice for 4th, due to the criteria of the relationship the president was imperative which was non existent between Kennedy and Johnson. I would strongly urge that you replace Johnson as the 4th best Vice President instead it should be George H.W Bush.

This is a ridiculously dumb list, especially since you're mainly just choosing VPs who became president after, regardless of their actual roles as VP. You mention Nixon, when Eisenhower infamously said, when asked to name an important decision made by Nixon as VP, said 'give me a week and I'll get back to you.' I'm a huge fan of Harry Truman, as I believe he was the 7th best president in history, but Truman was VP, as you said yourselves, for all of 82-days. And in those 82-days Truman was never even told of the existence of the Atomic bombs. Truman stands as the most important VP pick in history since the Democrats who chose him in 1944 knew that FDR was dying and would not serve out the full term (FDR planned to retire from the presidency after the end of WWII and birth of UN), but that doesn't make him a great VP. And Teddy Roosevelt's another choice who was VP for almost no time, and to say that he played a big role in McKinley's re-election in 1900 is laughably wrong...from 1860 until the 1912 election of Woodrow Wilson, the only Democrat elected president was Grover Cleveland, so McKinley was pretty safe in a rematch with eventual 3-time loser William Jennings Bryan.
But lastly, Dick Cheney? Regardless of his having so much power in George W. Bush's first term (Cheney's power waned in the 2nd term), he was a horrendous VP. Legalizing torture? Being perhaps the major architect of lying us into war with Iraq, a decision we're still not recovered from and who knows if we ever will be? How on earth is he on this list as one of the BEST VP's? Powerful does not mean best. Becoming president later does not mean best. What a joke.

If Theodore Roosevelt could come back from beyond to comment on his 6 1/2 month tenure as Vice President, he would rate himself very lowly as Vice President. In fact, if a political cartoonist pictured him as Rhett Butler and the office of Vice President was Scarlett O'Hara and Theodore mentions Rhett's famous last words, Theodore would certainly have highly praised the political cartoonist.
