2001年12月6日に発売されたプレイステーション2用ソフト『ICO』の開発初期映像です。開発チームへ作品イメージを共有するために、1998年頃に制作されたものとなります。『ICO』がどのようなゲームになるのか上田を含めスタッフ皆が見えず、暗中模索していたときにこの映像が出来上がったことで光明が見え、チームにとってブレイクスルーとなった映像です。走査線やノイズなど、映像やサウンドの不備、デバッグ表示もありますが、当時の雰囲気を感じていただきたく、あえて修正や編集は行っていません。

◆楽曲について
当時(1990年後半)は、ゲームに対して専用音楽ではなくポピュラーミュージック、しかも既存の楽曲を使用するという試み自体が珍しい時代でした。たまたま『ICO』のディレクションとゲームデザインを務める上田文人のデスクにあったCDから楽曲を選んでいます。
ターニングポイントになった楽曲が2曲あり、この映像ではMomusの『Summer Holiday 1999』(1999年の夏休み)を使用しています。もう1曲はサイモン&ガーファンクルの『スカボロ・フェアー』で、初代プレイステーションからプレイステーション2に開発移行後、最初のプレゼン用
映像に使用していました。どちらも開発中の映像にとてもマッチし、自分たちの作っているものに手応えを感じさせてくれた思い出深い楽曲です。
そして、製品版では幸運にも大島ミチルさんに楽曲を担当していただけることになり、多くの名曲を生み出していただきました。なかでも、『ICO-You were there』は、『ICO』を形作ってくれたかけがえのない楽曲です。

学生時代、僕はワンダからICOを知ったのですが、もう、ほんと大好きです。めちゃくちゃ衝撃を受けました。ICOをクリアした時リビングで1人でボロ泣きし、全然涙が止まらず親を困らせましたw
それからサントラCDを学校から帰って毎日何度も何度もリピートしました。下手くそながらICOの絵も描いてました。僕の人生の宝物は、間違いなくgendesignさんのゲームです。
スタッフの皆様方のおかげで今の僕があります。これからもお体には気をつけて制作して下さいませ。新作も何年経っても余裕で待てます。僕はあなた方のゲームが大好きだから。

I've never been so moved by any other work of art as I was by Ico when I played it for the first time in 2018.
I try to understand why I connected with it so strongly and I love to discover your influences that help to explain how you were able to create something so wonderful.

Honesty, I love it. I wonder if a version of the beta game could be made with these fmv cg models, considering how current graphics can handle more complex models now.

This video was created in 1998, early in ICO's development, for the purpose of sharing amongst the development team the vision for this title.
Back then, the staff (Ueda included) didn't have much idea of what kind of game ICO would turn out to be. When this video came together, it was something of a breakthrough for the team because it helped provide some clarifying "light", at a time when they were still "in the dark" trying to figure things out.
This video purposefully hasn't been edited from it's original version at all (so things like debug information and sound/noise issues are still there), so hopefully you can get a feel of what the atmosphere was like at that time.
Main points of this video:
- It combines CG with original Playstation footage
- To produce it, SoftImage was used for motion (animation) and Lightwave3D for modeling
- Yorda's design is different than the final released version.
- Ico's horns are different or missing.
About the music:
In those days (second half of the 1990s), using popular or pre-existing songs (instead of creating original music) for games was rare.
ICO's director/designer Fumito Ueda picked music from CDs that just happened to be on his desk at the time.
Two songs served as "turning points" for the project. One was "Summer Holiday 1999" by Momus, used in this video.
The other was Simon and Garfunkel's "Scarborough Fair", which was used in the first internal presentation video for the game after development had switched from the Playstation 1 to the Playstation 2.
Both songs were good matches for videos created during development, and they helped the developers feel a promising response from this work they were creating, so they have deep memories and emotions attached to them.
Later, for the release version, they were fortunate to have Michiru Oshima working on the music, and a lot of great songs were created, including "You were there", that unique song which really solidified and gave form to "ICO".

初期ヨルダが動いているところを初めて見れてうれしいです。
ヨルダが時折自分の腕を見るモーションは初期デザインで腕に刺青があった名残りだというのは何かで読んで知っていましたが、映像を見ると刺青というよりは紋様みたいで、しかも光ってるし、何か設定があったみたいですね。トリコの少年のようにいつのまにか腕に描かれていたのでしょうか。
長年の謎が解けると同時に、新たな謎が生まれてしまいました...(笑)
Ico was ahead of its time in so many ways. The animations, environments (who remembers the leaves on the trees?), a story told almost completely through the players interpretation and imagination, sparse but masterfully injected moments of music that allow the atmospheric ambience to shine, puzzles that seemingly blend into the environment (with the exception of the boxes, of course), I could go on and on. Thanks for reminding me why this is still and will likely forever be my favorite game of all time.
In which way was it ahead of its time? FF8 had better FMV content, if not better game play. Do explain which parts are so groundbreaking.

@@hacktheplanet. Why do you have to be combative about it? ICO's a 2001 game with clearly exceptional graphics and animation for early PS2. It was a game that also inspired many games and for people to even become game designers-- the creator of Dark Souls has stated that there would not be that game without ICO's existence. FF8 has also been inspirational for its own reasons... Have you even played ICO, though...? Please stop tearing others down and trying to start arguments for no reason. I don't understand why people have to be hostile all the time.

ICOの高い彩度や、細やかな自然音、トゥーン調のキャラを知っていた自分としては、ここから開発陣があそこまでの完成度に持っていったのかと感慨深いものを感じました。
こちらのゲーム会社の作品は、プレイ中に作り物だということを忘れさせるような没入感があり、唯一無二な存在だと思います。

This game was visually groundbreaking even in its prototype form. genDESIGN is one of a kind.
I still remember that next gen windmill with physically correct water pool underneath. Long live to Ueda san and all the people from genDESIGN.
服装から現代的な人物背景が伺えて「へぇ~!」と驚かされました。
「この映像がチームにとってのブレイクスルーになった」との事ですが、凡そプレイから20年を過ぎた私が見ても、製品版ICOをプレイした記憶が蘇りました。
音楽、ビジュアル、世界観が大きな魅力だった事は記憶していましたが、今見るとキャラクターの動き一つ一つが非常に丁寧に作られており、この動きを見ている事で、キャラクターが生き物の様に感じられ、より引き込まれていたんだなぁと改めて気づきました。
プレイしていた当時を思い出し、何かこう、「ぐっ」と来ました!
キャラクターデザインが発売されたものとかなり違いますね
ステージギミックは思い起こさせる部分もありますが。
PS1発売予定だったとは聞いてましたが、今回の映像はどれも初めて見るものばかりでした。

Thanks a lot for uploading this absolute gem of a video. ICO on the original PlayStation has always interested me as soon as I knew it existed, like how it differs from the final game on the PS2 and so on. I can recognise a lot of the areas and the level design doesn't seem to have changed that much. I enjoyed every single one of the your games thoroughly and cannot wait to see what's in store for us next. Thanks again for creating such wonderful experiences that stick with you forever.
I discovered Ico for the first time last year and fell in love with it 💕 there are games that remain timeless and universal and I think Ico is one of them.

For me, it's quite incredible that some areas seen in this footage actually made it into the final game (the courtyard with the sewer system underneath, the bridge in front of the waterfall and its surrounding areas).
I guess they decided that these areas would be beneficial or fit the tone of the direction they persued during development and decided to keep them while other areas (e.g. the statue room) where either altered or replaced by other locations.
Thank god they were allowed to hold off till the PS2! Thanks for sharing this wonderful work! :)

It reminds me of my favorite moment of another "ICO PS1 prototype trailer" at 1:29 seconds with the freedom to fully realize the game's vision, which came with switching to the PS2! But nowadays many ICO fans look towards those mysterious times when ICO was still on PS1 and wonder how they unfolded. Because every good thing is a product of what came before it, and every moment is precious.

I believe Kenji Eno helped create some of the CG on this early build. This would have been a great swan song for the psone, but probably got more exposure from being a launch PS2 title.

My impression of this video is kind of like the impressions the I got from the puzzles in The Last Guardian where the boy is trapped in an elevator and stuck by his collar to a tree branch.

La utilizamos para la primera presentación tras la transición de la PlayStation original a la PlayStation 2. Ambas canciones encajaban a la perfección con los efectos visuales en los que estábamos trabajando, y nos hicieron sentirnos dueños de lo que estábamos creando.
También tuvimos la suerte de que Michiru Oshima escribiera la música de la versión completa, y creó varias canciones estupendas. Entre ellas, "ICO-You were there" es una canción insustituible que ha dado forma a "ICO".

Well, bluepoint had already done an Ico remaster for ps3 and it's great.

Hopefully Shadow of the Colossus gets the same treatment on it's 20th Anniversary as well.
ICO was a wonderful game and once I realised it had some sort of connection with it's sucessors just made me appreciate more and more of TEAM ICO/GENDesign games.

Is there any chance, that You can update The Last Guardian to support 60 fps on a PlayStation 5 since we know that console could easily handle it? Unfortunatly, it doesnt look like Sony is interested in doing this... It would also be great to give us an option to disable button prompts that pop up in the game. Both this things would make this excellent game even better.

This video was made in 1998 internally and shown to other members of the development team and Playstation itself who needed to know how the game was coming together. The 'Coming Soon' was likely them making a promise to themselves that the game would be finished in a playable state. However, it turns out they needed to wait longer for the tech to bring their vision to life.

That's an FMV shot also from the PS1 version. It was shown briefly in an earlier ICO PS1 Prototype video released in 2011.
