In this tutorial, I will show you how to animate fire and flames in any frame by frame software (I used Photoshop). I will also create a real burnt effect by setting each frame on fire. This tutorial is suitable for beginners - intermediate. Please leave a comment if you'd like me to explain anything I may have skimmed over.

I think you should make merch that just says "we always label our layers".
Haha, I'd love to!! :)
@@BenMarriott please do it!
@@BenMarriott omg yes just take my money XD
@@BenMarriott I would 100% buy it if it has a nice illustration lmao
@@BenMarriott i would buy it :)
Here's what I pulled from this-- when animating, analyze the specific movement pattern and shape of the animated thing, and a base print always helps. Really helpful!
It took me several days to get the hang of it, but I realize that this is just a small part of an entire animation career
Really happy for you you're able to get yourself some sponsorships! Keep it going
Thank you so much for understanding😅
Ben: I'm going to show you how to animate a flame
Me: Okay, that's pretty neat, I'm excited for -
Ben: Then create this burning effect by LITERALLY SETTING THE FRAMES ON FIRE
Me: ........ one sec I need some popcorn.
Haha, thank you so much! Glad you're enjoying it 😊
@@BenMarriott this! I honestly thought the details for each frame and color is so much left now pheww... until he brought the candle in
I've been watching your videos since you started them and I'm very happy to see how much your channel has grown over the months! Keep it up Ben!
Thank you so much for the support right from the beginning, man, i really appreciate it :)
"frame by frame" it's a Magic, Thanks!
flame by flame
Anthony Tonev beat me to it ha
This is genius, haha :)
wow you put a lot of efforts just for this fire animation and now i know why your designs are so unique!! thanks for sharing different ideas and methods! i really love your experiments and learn a lot of things 😍
It's always fun when you end up printing something out and bringing it back in! I love stuff like this.
all we need is evan abrams and we got my 3 fave AE tutors right here (sorry, Kramer, you're more a VFX live action guy)
@@mattcurr9931 Thanks!
Thanks so much :D I'm pretty much looking for excuses to do it these days :)
Thanks @Matt Curr :) Normally we need to wait until the equinox for Evan to join, haha
I was like 'oh nice, I'll watch the tut and see how good it is'.
Then I got instantly sold it out with the intro. Awesome video!
definitely worthwhile, thanks for taking the time to do that!
Thanks! I learned a whole new plugin and was able to animate the fire in my logo with your help! In one afternoon! So pleased and appreciative!
This looks really good
This mans intro is legit!!!!!
I always have trouble animating effects straight ahead, even though that's the recognised method, but for some reason it never occurred to me to map out the wave motion beforehand as a guide! Thanks for opening my eyes to that possibility! I don't think I'm going to be setting fire to my frames though, haha :)
Was literally trying to do this today and struggling but this really helps. Also the burnt page stop motion looks v nice to me, good idea!
Thank you! I'm glad I could help in a small way😊
Really not only a tutorial, an artist experimentation! Thanks, always trying to learn.
hugs from Brazil!
Thank you so much!! :)
Looking to get iPad at some point to try my hand at hand-drawn animation and your tutorials are both helpful, and inspirational! 👍🏻
Look at what you’ve done! Now the animators have to draw all this fire!
The effort though!! Thankiuuu Ben for the tips
You know what it’s missing? Your signature character eyes 👀 Otherwise, you’re amazing for taking the time to burn the frames on real paper. 🤯
Looks awesome!
Awesome and inspiring! Thank you!
I thought I had escaped math but I guess I gotta use calculus whenever I draw a flame or a cape in the wind
I love your channel so much! Great comprehensive tutorial and I really appreciate all the effort and extras you put in. Thank you!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate the support and encouragement
this is freaking great, thanks!
Thank you!
Ben, you're awesome :) Thank you for another rad tutorial!
omg that's a massive work
nice !
keep being an awesome pyromancer! thanks a lot. that was great!
I'm studying this for digital animation for future videos and just for fun, so thanks!
WOW! Awesome!
This is helpful !! Thanks
that's awesome!
Awesome thanks for the video
thank you ben!!!
thank you this helped so much man
Wow! Why didn't I find you before , your tutorials are so useful!
Thank you! Very helpful!
Thank you
Life saver!! Thanks!
This was very helpful,thx
Thank You
Thank you for this. It helped alot
thank you
Just discovered you and I've already binged like 5 of your videos. Consider me subscribed!
This really helped, first animation done :)
Nice!
a really cool idea! For me i think the only reason the end result looked a bit odd was that it was too abstracted, and there was no environmental context for it (maybe some logs underneath it or a fireplace around it would've helped idk i dont wanna backseat design though it still looked good)
every helpful !
thanks !
Love that!!! Just what I would like to do !! Thanx :)
Hadnt even seen the whole thing, instant like for gramps at the start :D
Mike, you da bomb.
omg thank you!!!
Thanks a lot...
great one)
Now this is a tutorial. Most other toon flame tutorials here on youtube are After Effects "Do this, enter this value, do that, theres a flame" with no explanation for why something is being done. Basically creating a massive army of unskilled labor and not artists.
It's definitely a fascinating experiment, even if the results weren't quite what you expected. It's a good learning experience, right?
Speaking of learning experience, I wish your series was around when I was learning animation, because fire was one of the hardest FX for me and you break it down so beautifully here, it's helped a ton.
Thanks man I didn’t know how to get started practicing animating snakes or dragons
Awesome
U rock sir
Good!!
I love that no one dislikes these videos
Haha, me too actually :)
Keeps you creating ;)
You are my most favorite ❤
like the flow
its cool
Lets make this the first video on CZcams without a dislike
Haha, fingers crossed :)
Hey Ben, great video. If you're ever thinking of ideas for videos, I'd love to hear your thoughts on steps that can be taken to give a motion design project a cohesive overall look.
bro this vid is fire
r/technicallythetruth
Interesting
Hey just a thought, you should start putting the logo of whatever software the tutorial uses in the corner of your thumbnails! This would make it easy to quickly sort through your videos
Once again, thanks a lot for your video. Very useful as usual, is there any chance that you could do a duik tutorial please ?
Hey Ben! Do you use a sketch pad to draw or do you use a mouse? If you use a digital sketch pad, what type would you recommend? Thanks for your tutorials!
I think it turned out really nice.. I'm trying to do this but in stop motion for my cave fire scene.. look ing for a way to guide me to create the right shapes for the wool or wire I'm using...
Thanks you a lot>w
Ooooooooooo Fire
hey man how are you ?
great videos, I mainly animate in Toon Boom, and I was wondering if you know
how to add diferent textures to the color layers, because I actually have no Idea. cheers
Hey Ben,
why Photoshop is your tool of choice for this one (and also in the previous tutorial) and not After Effects?
Thanks
I did this looong ago (maybein the 90s? yeah..ok boomer), but I used a small soldering torch for the burn effects. It would scorch well before setting on fire.
If I was to do it again, I would use some Nitrogen (from a mig) and fill the area and then bring the flame down. Im curious how the naturally snuffing flame (from the N2) would look.
I can't call myself an animator, but every few years I do a project...(doing one now, which might end up a trend in my vids, because working on pieces of junk with a crippled and broken spine wasnt hard enough...)
It was a cool flame. And I understand why you dont post the final product. People steal everything...
Please make a video about neural network animation
Do you use a cintiq or just a graphics tablet
Try zooming in (ctrl+scroll)
Maybe a silly question but is there a way to insert a frame between 2 existing frames in Animdessin2? The "create InBetween" button just seems to stick a new frame at the end of my timeline no matter where the playhead is or what clips are selected. Do we really have to drag and drop new frames from the end to the place we need them?
me: banning head on desk for 2 hours. youtube: HERE YA GO!! honestly thanks for making this.
Animdessin hasnt worked on the last few versions of photoshop... For me anyway... If you know another technique please inform... Also I do not see the link in description
Hmmm, I should work on at least CC19 (I haven't tried on CC20 yet)
Here's a link: github.com/sbaril/Photoshop-Animation
Works for me on CC20
@@BenMarriott Thank you for the link and of course the great videos as always... I will give it a try tonight...
Can someone please tell me why it takes so long for the render dialogue box to open once I click on render video?
Does anybody know how to install AnimDessin2 on PS CC 2020?
How DO I Install The Extension?
Frame by frame is not the easiest method. I think you can do this animation entirely in AE and it will look the same
I can not get the wave to loop, any one have an idea what I could be doing wrong?
how to install .. AnimDessin2 .on windows?
How to do the sine wave looping... I m not able to get it
Hm i don't know what it is but it's not waving it's just going up kind of like stop motion? Any tips
is it on purpose that it says "rough animator" and "rough animtor" at 0:29 ?
uma das desvantagens de falar português...
