RIP Earl Scruggs
After Dueling Banjos and Jesse James this felt like the one to try. Written by the great Earl Scruggs and made famous in the 1967 film Bonnie and Clyde.
I use a drop-G tuning, (don´t know if it has a name(?), only the A string is retuned down to a G) because then you have the root notes of the three chords used, G major, E minor and D major, as open "bass" strings.
Of course it doesn´t have to be played at such high tempo (but it should be!) - it´s a bit of a struggle (this is like the 100th take :)
I´ve also noticed this style seems to require some nail on the right hand, otherwise the overall sound may become a bit "blurred".
This is just an idea and it could be developed further, with more solo parts etc.

Yeehaw!

Ive been playing for 30+ years. This is probably the most impressive thing ive seen someone do on a guitar. Glad this is still up on CZcams after 14 years
I couldn't go to sleep last night for some reason trying to think of this video and couldn't remember how to find it or what song it was, today I heard someone play foggy mountain breakdown on banjo and it jogged my memory🎉it's probably been 5-10 years since I'd saw/heard it, glad to have found it again. I'll listen to it a few more times to confirm that my guitar career is over.
Sometimes, I wonder if songs like this inspire more people to start playing guitar, or cause existing pickers to throw down their guitars in disgust and take up playing bass.
Five stars, absolutely amazing.
Think again czcams.com/video/HUIsiou0gj4/video.html
Don here from Hamilton NZ, wow I don't use a thumb pick l think I'll give it some practice, brilliant technique, thanks again
😂😂😂😂😂
I been playing for 1 year. And this makes me sick and inspired
@@andrewwhiteheadmaking2murd699 I AGREE 🤣
Hi there, my name is David Skinner I'm a guitar player from ireland. I really never comment on anything on youtube, but I have to say this is genuinely one of the most impressive things I have ever seen done with a guitar. Fantastic work sir.
I've come back and watched this every few months for over 10 years now, so good!
I probably watch it at least once a month 👍
Same here it’s a fucking joke how good this is.
You're not the only one!
aaand me
Indeed.
How does this NOT have 400 BILLION views ?
I second that; simly amazing.
because it's not Justin Beiber stroking his feminine hair in a dance clip about nothing...
kevin lee Simply, because people don’t understand and they are not ready. Let’s take it this way: I’d rather belong to a selected group... It’s a fact
I heard this some years ago and, again, you are still the Man
There’s only 8 billion people in this world you stupid fuck that’s why
61 viewers were so disappointed, that they quit guitar playing and started knitting...
ha ha
I'm pretty sure this would be the only reason for someone to dislike this video haha this is awesome stuff!!
hahaha
15 years later this one still gets my goat!!
This has been my all time favorite CZcams video for 13 years now!! What an absolute shred!! I’ve been a flat picker for 18 of my 32 years on this earth.. I’m still jealous of the insanity in this fingerstyle..
this is the technically the most impressive guitar playing i've ever witnessed
Mr Tallstrom or Sir. Ain't no other way to address you. That was a mind-blower.
The very best finger-picked version of this tune that I have ever heard! Many thanks!
The best version of Foggy Mountain Breakdown played on the guitar I EVER HEARD. Way to go Martin.
I've heard this flatpicked countless times over the years, but I have to say this fingerpicking blows them all away. Earl would be proud!
I come by to listen to this often. I'm still amazed. I also get a chuckle every time at the end when he goes, "Whew." Just outstanding!
I get just as many goose-bumps watching this the 84th time as I did when I saw it the very first time. Excellent Sir. Excellent.
Instant smile. Incredible playing. Whenever someone has this much skill i cant help but laugh!
When I think I'm getting good, I just watch this. The Humbler video. Man, it gets me every time, so smooth with minimal movement!
Still amazing after all these years!
Faultless. Just absolutely special.
i just started picking with my fingers, been just using a pick for years, my guitar saw this video...i just looked at her and said it aint happening...LOL great picking man i really enjoyed your playing.
***** Thank you Maxwell! Pick away :)
Maxwell Mann You better don’t try to imitate. Play candid your way. It’s like talking; you’re not supposed to imitate somebody else’s voice and/or way of talking
@@danielibnzYou literally learn to speak by copying others, silly comment
this is such a smart arrangement. Perfectly adapted for guitar
I just can't stop watching this. Being a guitar player myself, I know how difficult it is to play at this tempo with clarity. You are just amazing. I love your other videos too, you are my new favorite.
I've probably watched this 20 times already today. Amazing...
Holy jeez. How have I not seen this until today. Unreal
This is the best guitar version I've heard. Insane.
That's the most amazing thing I've ever heard on guitar. WOW
Everything was spectacular. The guitar playing was awesome. The crickets were sweet. The old school film appearance was classic. 5 stars!!!
Best I've ever seen in all my life....I've actually just thrown away my guitar..
Inspires me and makes want to give up at the same time.
That's sooo good ! Listening for the 10th time in a row now and still haven't had enough :)
I'm a former professional bluegrass musician myself. Guitar and bass as well as vocals This is a phenomenal piece of guitar work. But the timin
Best guitar playing I've ever seen, mindblowing.
Still blows me away Martin!
He keeps his finger motions so small - true mark of an expert player. My playing looks spastic in comparison. One of the top fingerstyle players I've seen.
Thank you for the kind words William!
Really? Try billy strings, think you’ll change your mind
@@guitarman1477 Completely different style of playing. Billy Strings was strumming in the video I watched.
The fastest gun in the west, the strings turned red hot. Amazing!
This brings a tear to my eye c:
This video has stood the test of time. You're the man!!! Stellar performance sir!!!
Wow - this is absolutely amazing guitar playing!
Woooow, its amazing how you play the foggy mountain breakdown on guitar, great job!!!
Beautiful - so sweet
Well, that blew my socks off! I just bought a banjo and now you have shown me I could have stayed with my guitar. Great job.
I have been playing guitar for close to 50 years.....FOR SALE: My entire collection of fine guitars, why bother?
That was the most incredible, flawless rendition of FMB I have ever seen or heard. Is Mr. Tallstrom from this planet? Bravo sir, and why don't you have a recording career that we know of... or do you??
Check out billy strings, makes this clown pedestrian
@@guitarman1477 Billy Strings is a great player. But I feel like he focuses to much on speed and looses feeling. This guy almost blows Billy Strings out of the water
@@guitarman1477 It's sad when someone denegrates a fellow musician and calls him a clown, more so when you couldn't remotely hope to hit his level of ability. Keep quiet and stick to your cowboy chords.
@@guitarman1477 It's always the 'fans' who are the petty pedestrians. If Billy Strings heard you say that, he'd likely just look at you thinking who the f is this sad prick.
Thanks for the kind words and support!
Tack, kul att du gillar stilen och skivan, ha en fortsatt trevlig sommar.
MVH/ Martin
impossible to be this clean
This is how music is supposed to be, having fun with the song and having a hell of a time. Cheers.
Damn... speechless
I can absolutely NOT understand the 25 (update: 47) persons who choosed "thumb down" - seems they are jealous :))))
Well done - I like it!!
I imagine there are 25 banjo players that can't play thison the banjo, much less, on the guitar!
Yeah the only conclusion I can come to for someone putting a thumbs down is complete and utter jealousy.
It must be jealousy. Can't think of any other reason. This is amazing
Low-brow to diss the most amazing guitarist on the scene right now
Just flat out amazing! Kudos
Very good, thank you for the moment.
Hey, yer pretty damn good. Funniest lookin' banjo I ever saw though. ;-)
haha
Sounds kinda funny too.
...it's clearly a physically challenged banjo. Don't be rude, they're instruments too.
ending was funny. incred playing!!!
Time goes by and I watch this video every so often, beauuuutiful!
Thank you Martin for your videos! Your playing is exceptional!!
Martin Tallstrom n'est pas seulement un talentueux guitariste ; c'est un excellent musicien
Holy Moly!! Do you keep a fire extinguisher handy?? Fantastic!
Have loved this song all my life on a banjo, really like this on guitar as well!
You can always tell when an arrangement is "right"... this is simply terrific.
Damn Dude!! thats NO JOKE!!
I like how at the end it says "Free Tab"
Go to his website it is there for free
Very clean, I keep finding myself coming back again, and again.
I just love this acoustic guitar version of this song. I always come back to watch it frequently. For 1min & 34secs, I can break free from this hectic and crazy world.
You need to do a road to spencer solo. Now that would be awesomey amazing 👏
Time to smash my guitar...
bob murray best comment XD
It makes me put down my guitar, with a sad face :)
lol
Its hard indeed to get motivated after watching this hahaha!!
NO! just practice more...
Thank you SO much for making your tabs open source and easily accessible. I will learn a lot from what you've shared and will share it with others.
Absolute perfection!!! stellar playing man!
I just peed a little.
yo!
whaaaaaat
Hope you caught it in a bottle just in case of a drought..
Yeah.. me too!
I shat my pants
Hi, I like being able to use a little bit of nail because of the extra treble, clarity and precision they add... But, there´s really very, very little nail involved here - if I hold my hand up so I´m facing the palm, I can´t see any nail over the fingertip.
They do get a lot of wear and tear, I keep filing and polishing them, nearly every day. That, and the more you keep playing steel strings, the harder they get. I haven´t broken one in years (knock on wood)...
I don´t use any glues etc.
When did you record this? I post a daily Song of the Day online and usually do a little write-up about the song/artist posted, and this recording is up on deck.
Incredible wicked fast precision and playing, I can't stop watching this! Thanks so much for sharing and inspiring, you are a credit to all musicians!
Most worthy!! Have had this un my Favs folder and watch it all the time. Cheers
WHO COULD POSSIBLY GIVE THIS A Thumbs Down?????????
.
What brand of guitar is this?
i'd love to have a talk with the 38 "thumbs down" people and ask them what exactly they do not like about this performance..
+Louis Verrone ~ Maybe it's the crickets and he's dressed for outdoor activity not performing.
THAT was fantastic! Loved it. Thanks
Absolutely stellar performance! Thank you.
Is the video sped up a little, even just a little? It seems impossible to play that fast even for a player as good as Mr. Tallstrom.
excellent, that looks a lot of work to play on a guitar. much easier on a banjo
i keep coming back to this video because the playing is absolutely fantastic. bravo!
Damn Boy!!!! That is absolutely hot as hell, take no prisoners
Your playing stands right besides Tommy Emmanuel.
just bloody fantastic.
Now that is art at its finest. Thanks for sharing your talent sir!
So. Damn. Clean! I’ve watched this multiple times for several years and holy crap man. Good work.
Thanks Martin, for the post very cool mate. and awesome sounding guitar.
❤️🙏
I thoroughly enjoyed that. What a talent !! One of my favorite songs and I could only wish to play that good one day!! Thanks again for sharing....
simply incredible---Thank You !!!
Always loved this, not listened in a while. Still blows me away :)
Awesome rendition of this bluegrass classic...I love it man!! Thanks for posting and providing me with the inspiration and motivation to keep picking :)
Wow! Super terrific.
Best. Ever.
So smooth and well played.
Thank you for the tabs too!
I'm going to try to learn it over then next two months.
I can't get tired listening to this!
I watch this video when I haven't played in a month or so and the way you play it makes me tap my foot everytime and am reminded why I wanted to play in the first place.
Awesome! Best I have every heard.
I have no words. This is amazing.
What an inspirational guitar player you are, glad to have found your channel and thanks for sharing
Wow. Absolutely Phenomenal. Perfectly on beat and flawless!
Amazing, incredible, perfect version of foggy mountain breakdown. You are one heck of a player!!
Fabulous! Thanks for the video.
This is incredible! Inspiring!
That is amazingly clean!!
Nice touch - one of the best I've seen.
Wow! Was looking for a tutorial on a simple way to pick this song. I think I’ll just throw my guitar in the fire instead! Lol. That was awesome.
Beautiful!🤩
