The "pad" with the drumhead on it is a Korg Wavedrum. It is electronic, but it's not a trigger-based solution. It takes the actual tone of the drumhead and processes it to make different sounds. This means you can play it with hands, brushes, sticks, mallets, etc and get completely different sounds. It's a really cool unit.

It's their ability to work fluidly within that time on the micro-level without actually affecting its consistency on the macro-level of a song that separates actual live 'unassisted' if you will drumming from today's horridly quantized(you better be staying up on your Rick Beato content!) recorded drumming/music. It's the ability to insert a fluid fill inside of an utterly ridgid time structure, it's not a constantly wavering time due to a drummer's variance without a click vs with a click.
If a click changes the way you sound, that isn't the click's fault - [assuming that the song fits within one of course] Danny Carey isn't just miraculously going to sound 'inhuman' or like a 'robot' just because you put a click in his ear

His power and physicality are crazy good for his age. 58 isn't really "old" these days, but it's still pretty damn unusual to be doing what Danny does here at nearly 60. Most drummers will experience something of a drop off in some facet of their game once they reach their late 40s to early 50s (akin to how someone in their mid-to-late 30s will often begin to noticeably drop off in combat/contact sports) but Danny is still killing it and doing so much better than a lot of aging drummers....

Brother, that was the best reaction to this vid that I've seen. Real-time knowledgeable reaction without getting too hyperbolic and admitting when the skills were beyond you. Nice work!

Did you know that Danny’s time signatures are actually the energy produced that makes the tardis fly through time and space

Schools are closed at least until April here, and I'm out of work until then so ya know... you get bored and decide to do more reactions to metal drummers? I'll watch 'em.
Danny Carey is something else... been an idol of mine since high school so I'm interested to see how this lands for you. Take it easy and wash yo hands!

I believe what you're asking about @3:09 is a Korg Wave Drum, Danny refers to it as "the toilet seat" and yes it's a programmable electronic drum.

I honest to God do not think I have ever heard a drummer as versatile as Dany Carey, he has it all..swing, groove, funk, taste, and supreme technical ability. Absolutely unreal!

I love watching drummers' brains turn to mush trying to figure out the time signatures/polyrhythms. It clicks, then they smile. Every time. It's great.

Maynard's Judo throw of a fan who stormed the stage, encapsulates the essance of Tool for me. He opened his arms as if to give her/him a hug, as soon as they embrace, he judo hip tosses them on their neck. Then sits on them with his knee pinning them down and continues singing the song.
