I think you look so cool with your natural hair. Yes, dreadlocks looked really nice on you, but I feel like your natural hair is so unique that it actually gives you more character. I personally love how big it is. It really goes with your style. Maybe you can try keratin on your hair if you want it less big? Theres so much more that you can do without dreads. Maybe try some cool hairstyles that you weren't able to try before like a half up half down or a messy bun?

I would say wait at LEAST 6 months to see if you want to go back. Go through all the seasons to see if there is any new way that you can style your natural hair! 💛

Elise. I completely relate to how you feel! This is my 3 rd time with dreads. I let people’s opinions, thoughts and their feelings dictate how i felt when i had my hair dreaded. BUT im way passed that now, dreadlocks make me feel complete, feel like myself, and bring me much happiness. Thats all that matters is if your happy! I hope u decide to redread your hair. Thats gow i found you on CZcams and thats how i will always see you! But if u decide not to, i will still support your decision and im invested in who you are and what u bring to the world! Keep being you, no matter what 👏👍💯🌙❤️

Put them back in. I took mine out a year ago after having them for years. I miss them dearly. I did twist and rip the 1st time but my appt is booked and I'm going down to Dollylocks to have them put back in. I have totally unmanageable hair and dreads make my life so much easier. They also brought me joy and left me feeling very grounded. I look forward to following your journey all over again. Love following you.

I brushed out mine 3 years ago and I've had them for 3,5 years. And I had the SAME thoughts as you! where are my wavy hair and I remembered why I got dreads in the first place. I hated having hair in my face and I couldnt style them for a while. three years later...I still miss them but I learned how to "play" with my hair now and I feel comfortable . but it took time... it took mine alot of masks and maybe a year of waiting and preping them to get to what my hair was before dreads. be patience and time will fly by and you'll see you'll get to where you were before. and hi from Greece:p

Hey Elise.. I’ve been watching your videos for almost a year & a half now. You actually inspired me to get my dreadlocks. I’d never seen any like yours before, and after the first pic of you I saw, I knew what look I wanted to go for. Im at 1.5 yrs into my “dreadlock journey”. Some days I think maybe I need to brush them out & cut my hair to a shorter length, maybe to blend in w/everyone when I’m feeling like a freak. But then someone tells me how much they love my locks, & I remember why I love them too. I’m different from everyone else & I can look however I want to. Right now I choose my locks. Maybe I’ll change my hair down the road. But nothing is permanent. Do what you want Elise. I miss your locks too, but you look beautiful the way you are right now in this video as well.

Elise, you should definitely use some coconut oil treatment or olaplex to help your hair get back to it's "normal" state. And pleeeaase dont use any heat on your hair for a couple of months. Your hair is really fragile and needs a little love. It already looks beautiful now. Let alone with a little love and a little time.

Hey Elise I am with you on this journey I hope you read my comment. I brushed out my dreadlocks on Jan 1st, so it’s been about two weeks. What I did to get over my dreadlocks was to decide on a new hair goal, which is now growing my hair long and will take years. But I find oiling my hair every 3 days to be very helpful and wash it out with double shampoo, this is very helpful in cold climates. Oil will help with the shine and frizz. Just love and appreciate your hair and take care of it is helping me over my length loss. I had my dreadlocks for almost as long as you, 4 years. I love your channel Elise and I think you look beautiful either way. I also think you would look gorgeous with a side braid, that helps with breakage outside in winter.

like everyone else is commenting--you look beautiful either way. it's natural to miss something and long for it when you've had it for so long... stay strong! and remember why you brushed them out. ALSO--don't feel pressured into doing your hair... idk if you did anything to your hair for this video but it looks absolutely stunning. natural, bushy, thick hair is gorgeous. of course curled / straightened hair is lovely, but having your natural hair is "grounding," as you put it. I always leave my hair natural and don't do anything to it because it makes me feel more humble and down-to-earth, if that makes sense. you definitely don't have to style your hair if you don't want to, especially if it doesn't feel very "you"!! even when going out you can put your hair in a loose braid / loose braids, or tie some back. you don't always have to make it look super styled and put together. just a thought!

We are going through the EXACT same thing! I had locks for 3 years and a few weeks ago I shaved them off...I understand what you mean when you say dreads 'grounded' your style. It did for me too. It feels like whenever I get dressed to go out now I just feel like part of me is missing. Sometimes I feel like it was the worst thing I could have ever done, but I also get moments where I know this was the best decision I could have made. My hair was so damaged from where I had dyed my locks and so now, with a freshly shaved head its allowed me to start new again, damage free! You're super brave Elise, I think your hair looks great with and without dreadlocks. :) x

I'm going to be really honest with you- you look really good with dreadlocks, but I love your hair without them. It may take a while for your hair to get back to its gorgeous state, but it will be totally worth it in the end. I also think your hair could use a break for a while to get a bit of its health back again. Another thing- the people I know also have time finding a job while they do have dreadlocks. Even though I've said all of this, just do what seems right for you. We will love you either way. 😘

You could try a larger curling iron or foam curlers; like a 1.5 inch. It will give you bigger, softer curls. Or try a tapered curling wand for beach waves. I have very thick hair as well and it always looked better with bigger and looser curls. Lately I’ve been on a journey of just accepting my hair for the way it is and just letting it be. I was always fighting against it. Best wishes on your own journey!

Hi Elise :-) i totally get you. I brushed my dreads out in September and I kept 9 in the back. I loved having my hair back the natural way but it took a while to get my hair back to its curly self ... lots of moisturizer had to be put into it... anyway just like u I’ve very thick hair and after only 3 months I contemplated getting my dreads back, because I got annoyed with my hair again. I had rather thick dreads so I divided the ones which are left into smaller dreads and I extended them - I love it but they need so much care and fixing cause they’re new. I’m getting my dreads back next month and I cannot wait!!! I’m excited to see what you’ll decide for yourself. I adore ur old dreads :-)

Getting used to change takes time. Especially for women with our hair! When I stopped flat ironing my hair every day it was so hard to get used to it not being stick straight. I had to let it heal from all the damage I did to it and stay away from the hair dryer. It was not easy, let me tell you! It has now been close to six years since I decided to let my hair do its own thing and I love my hair now! I think it looks very bohemian/mermaidy. I didn't know how curly and wavy my hair is or how long it could grow because I was frying the ends off with the flat iron every day. I think you look beautiful either way. :)

  • @minifamilyadventurestravel6917

I had mine brushed out, it took for the natural hair growth to cure my hair. My hair was sooo different, I think when you get older your hair naturally changes but in dreadlocks, it's hard to see. I completely understand how you feel - it's almost as if you've lost part of yourself. But change is hard, and if you want to keep trying something new youll always feel something like this, however - if you want to express something that your dreadlocks represented to you, of course it makes sense that you miss them. Just do what feels right for you, no one else can truly know how you feel in this moment than yourself.

Your hair texture looks very similar to mine, I feel you on the big fluffy hair. It took a long time to figure out, but I got a bottle of Marula oil from The Ordinary. I wash my hair twice a week with a sulfate free shampoo made for wavy hair, towel dry it, put in the oil with my hands, comb through with a detangling brush, then flip my head upside down and shake out my hair a bit and scrunch it a little with a microfiber towel and let it air dry. The less you heat style your hair, the better it will look. Also accepting my natural texture was instrumental in learning how to handle the mass of wavy frizz it once was. (Seriously... It was like an 80s hair metal rats nest) Now it has finally calmed down and turned to a more shiny wave/loose curl.
I wish you all the best in your hair journey, you will know what is best for you when you get there! ❤️

I am a natural blonde and dyed my hair red for the first time when I was 18. Over time I’ve dyed my hair a multitude of colors from pink to brown to other reds to purple to orange and back again. Currently I’m platinum blonde after having been red for 4 years. And after the 5 1/2 hour session to get the red out and three months later I’m sitting here missing my red. Some styles you just connect with - it is you. I think it’s SO important to experience change because quite frankly it helps you identify and appreciate what just feels right. 💛

I know how u feel. I just brushed mine out mid-last month & my hair is sooo hard to manage. Brushing my hair everyday alone makes me miss my dreadlocks. I do plan on getting them again tho.

Have to admit it'd be pretty fun to watch you begin the process since ive never seen what goes into it. And just be you and forget what society thinks. Life is too short to not be happy just being yourself.

It took me nearly a year to get past NOT having my dreads. And i can't really say i ever did since I'm growing them back out now.

  • @chilllmama4460

So the reason I got dreads was because my hair was the same as yours. Big, fluffy, and SO thick! It would take me hours just to do anything with it! I hated it so much. Then I found your channel and I fell in love with your dread locks and I decided to finally get them!! Now I love them so much and they are short and really not that heavy compared to my old thick hair. If you do decide to get them back I would definitely just leave them short with no extensions! I think its better that way because you can watch your dreadies grow and lock and start to get longer. Its also not as bad when you sleep with it being short. Hope this helped beautiful Elise! ❤🌸👋

Yeah get your dreads back I loved them. I'm only going for one year now snd get frustrated somedays cause they not mature yet, but I don't regret at all getting them. The heaviness is a issue but try keep them at a length that will be comfortable for you. You are beautiful no matter what, from my point of view....get them back ❤

hey , are u using anything to get volume on your hair like when you dry them, spray or ? because you got so much volume even after take off the dreads that's crazy!! normally when you take off the dreads you loose a lot the volume you had before making them no? and you said you had 40 dreads, there were or true then? I didn't had much volume and I have only 23 dreads but I dont have all the head, but its so frustrating I would like more dreads...

The stigma associated with having dreadlocks is what keeps me from getting them all over. I currently have 5, all in the back of my hair, underneath where I can tuck them away. I am also a nurse, and I worry about what people would think of it in that setting, and if it would be considered "professionsl," but I love them, and I would love to have all my hair done. I think you are beautiful either way, but it is all about how you feel about yourself that matters.

Dear Elise, I‘ve brushed out my dreadlocks almost 3 years ago. I‘ve had them for three years before I decided I needed a change. I’ve always had that feeling, that people reduced me and my personality only on me being the girl with dreads. They expected that I would be super cool and chilly just because I looked like this. And I started to play a role. After I‘ve brushed out my dreads, I was so sad about not being able to express what I wanted to express by my look anymore. I felt too usual and ununique. But I‘ve learned that this is absolutely not true. Now I feel so much more like myself. And people like me because of who I really am. Get used to your new hair and you‘ll get over it. By the way you look fantastic :-)

I can somehow relate to this. I've been dyeing my hair black for almost five years. Then one day, three weeks ago, I decided I wanted some change. I went to the hairdresser and got a ginger ombre... Now my hair is three colours: ginger, black and my natural brown on the roots. I lowkey hate it and I kinda regret what I've done. My hair is sooo dry now, too. But I've spent too much to have the courage go back to my black. I'll just wait to get my whole head ginger... And let's see how it goes.

I can totally relate to your thoughts. I´ve gone through these arguments like you, when I brushed out my dreadlocks. The reason was simply the length of them, i felt they where too short (they where about 8 to 20 cm long). In the end I could just have let them grow to the lengh i wanted, but I didnt had the patience to. After I had my hair loose for about ten months I made really long woolen synthetic dreads of my own and crocheted them in because my own hair was still too short for making longer dreads. And the length now is a problem like the other way round, they go down to my hips and sometimes I sit on them or I get problems while cooking or eating because they´re hanging in my meal and all that stuff. :D But I thougt it would be better to have longer dreads and being able to cut them shorter if that was necessary instead of having too short ones again. :)

  • @emiliiajayne

I feel like you needed to brush them out anyway because of the pressure they were putting on your scalp and to remind yourself of why you got dreadlocks in the first place! So maybe just enjoy having quick-drying and comfy to sleep on hair for now and see how you feel in a few months time as like you said, you can start fresh dreads now which will be much more fun as you would have learnt a lot from the first time you got them :) ❤️

When i first took out my dreads I didn't like my hair at all but then I got it trimmed and dyed it and loved it again! You could try dying it a cool color or getting bangs or just something different. Also I did end up dreading half of my hair again but I think I might take them out soon lol.

if you do go back to them id advise not doing any crochet hook-ing, ive heard from loads of people that it weakens the hair, it *can* break hair in the dreads which leads to thin, weak dreads, also when/if you brush them out you lose a lot less hair. just a thought :D also could you maybe try doing some videos on mens fashion, ive been looking for ideas but no-one has any good videos on mens hippy/bohemian fashion.
