The Quest 1 was and is my first headset ever, it took my life savings and a lot of family members to help me buy it, some months later a better and cheaper version of it got released 💀 I still feel scammed to this day and it sucks that the Quest 1 will be completely obsolete
that's sadly how it is with current day tech, one day you'll have the best device currently out and the next there's 20 new products that do it better
Save up for the Apple Vision pro for many years, Apple doesn’t just kill devices. Some of their 20 year old Macs still work great.
Me2 dude, I paid 800 for Quest 1. Then, a few weeks later, they dropped Quest 2, and now I can't play really anything on it 😂😂
i feel you man same here
Similar thing happened to me with my quest one.
It still pisses me off to this day.
The day my headset got to my house like two days later the quest 2 was announced
We need a way to choose our social VR spaces by age man. We make these choices all the time in real life.
For that to work the company running the VR space would have to verify users age.
Maybe some spaces for over 18s that require ID could work.
@@Toby-Wan-Kenobi No thanks for those IDs, there are plenty of ways that already exist to separate social VR spaces by age without IDs.
@@Monitice i agree, but without active or community moderation, squeakers will always find a way into where they shouldn't be
@@Moniticehow? I thought it was either privacy breach or not secure enough?
@@Monitice What's wrong with the ID method?
I just see the whole Quest thing as: You paid for a thing. No matter how old it is, you still have it, it still works, and you should be able to use it. Maybe it doesn't connect to the storefront and can only be used as a PCVR set, but it should still *work*. I can understand shutting off services for an out of date product, but the device should still, at the very least, work as it did with its final major patch.
The Quest was always e-waste-in-waiting due to it's non user-replaceable battery.
@@zig131 And I should be able to use it until the battery goes. And anything is user-replaceable with the right tools and knowhow.

Hi Thrill! Thanks for answering my QOTW and apologies it was long XD
I just wanted a professional VR user, like you, opinion on Metas "move" to PCVR. Performance wise makes sense, and so does making more apps for Meta users, of course steam VR will be available no doubt. I am very excited and thrilled (no pun indented) for the future of Meta. Thank you so much for answering my QOTW. Have a nice week!
-Much love, ArcticWolf
Thanks for putting in the question! I really appreciate it and I really love answering and giving opinions on QOTW. Thanks for being around! Much love
@@ThrillSeekerVR hi should I sub?
Wait, I'm confused. Why would the Quest 1 become a paperweight after official support ends? Wouldn't it continue working as always, but without updates? Surely Meta wouldn't brick devices.
You would not believe what meta would do lol.
Edit: Why the frick is this at 101 likes.
That's what I would think unless issues are caused with lack of updates
I’m guessing you can play your games but won’t be able to play any multiplayer from the sounds of it.
My Oculus Go was basically bricked shortly after support for it stopped
Other companies have done that before, like Samsung with their S3 and the 4.3 update being the nail in the coffin.
Damn. I was actually really really hyped for the mojo lens. As someone who wears contacts daily it was a perfect idea.
The vast majority of Quest owners didn't learn of the Quest until early 2020 (Covid Lockdowns), and it was difficult to attain from 02/2020 - 06/2020. So for most users, Quest 1 is only 2.5 years old.
I understand the end of support for the Oculus Quest but getting rid of basic social features like making a party has no excuse, you’re telling me I can’t play games that the Quest 1 and Quest 2 can both handle in a party with my friends, it’s a shame and knowing Meta they won’t give anything to any remaining Quest 1 users to at least make it somewhat worth having
The quest 2 might get longer support but it’s important to remember that the quest 2 is being sold today. It’s not about the first buyer getting appropriate support; it’s about the last buyer getting appropriate support
Yeah exactly, this is why I'm holding off buying one until the Quest 3 comes out, 'cause I damn well know they're gonna stop supporting it way too soon as we're already going into year 3 of its existence.
@@firalia at that point you might want to look into other headsets

So happy about Roblox, might actually get kids out of VRChat and into somewhere (slightly) safer.

Roblox would definitely be a safer place for them and roblox is also in general a really good platform for games already probably one of the better companies to try to compete with vrchat
Definitely only slightly lol
@@shujihar2410 roblox is the safehaven for pedophiles its not good.

I bought my Quest 1 in July as a collective birthday present from my family members, after 1-2 months of having it they suddenly discontinued selling. I don't have spare money to get the upgrade so I've been stuck with a dying headset, which is so frustrating since I've forked a lot of money into making this little guy a comfortable and fun experience.
Exactly, that's the scam. All of the hype of the Quest platform as Cheap VR ignores the small fortune people spend trying to make it a tolerably comfortable experience if they don't just leave it in the box in a closet instead. The Quest platform has been a downgrade in value from the Original Rift for PCVR, and almost no one who becomes an enthusiast will remain content with stand alone VR.
That's a bummer
I’m glad you said something, the exact same thing happened to me to. I bought the headset in July, then was kicking myself when the quest 2 came out a couple months later. I feel your pain and wish Meta had at least refunded quest one users, but instead Im stuck with an old outdated headset.
its been out for a while
That's what happened to me with my Oculus Go. I got it in late 2019, and they stopped supporting it in 2020.
Thanks for featuring my LabWorks trailer!
It was very well made! Good work
@@ThrillSeekerVR runoff is coming soon :)
I hope that quest 1-s PCVR capabilities will not be removed. we have a ton of those at school and it would be sad if they became useless
You got VR headsets at your school?!
I can't believe the original Quest is only 4 years old, it feels like it's been around for so much longer, it's a shame Meta likely won't open it up in any way, there could be tons of life left in them, feels like a waste to just make them essentially useless.
Do you think an update to Quest 2 will ever bring support for background applications to run like a built in twitch overlay to see chat or stream right from the headset to twitch?
I don't think it has enough RAM to do that and run games
thats hardware not software
Well, the head set clearly already has overlays with the menus as well as the casting already being a thing. As for the ram. I don't see how it would take up more space than the casting system already would.
that’s possible with openxr as long as running multiple apps at once is possible on quest which I don’t know.
It would be really nice to at least be able to have 1 or 2 browser tabs open while in a game, have a wiki or video open.
Still on Quest 1, still on legacy Oculus account. It never forced me to switch, and still giving me firmware updates.
I use it as a PCVR headset, that OLED is too good for anything LCD to impress me.
COLORS > resolution.
This is pretty punk
Agree 100%! The Q1 is faltering in terms of standalone performance and is heavy, but PCVR is great with it at native resolution and without a wire.
QOTW maybe?!
How far off do you think we are to having gloves and electrodes suits for our VR set ups?
It'd be cool to see a video on the history and future of AR wear. What are the most promising AR developments and companies?
Even after the Quest 1 support drop. Doesn't the quest 1 still work as a pc vr headset? its not like the headset will brick or become completely unusable.
Love seeing your videos show up on my recommended, keep it up!
There's this magic button, it's called the 'subscribe' button, it means you don't have to rely on the recommendation algorithm youtube feeds you, you can CHOOSE what you watch...
Loved the vid! What do you think about cloud streaming in vr, such as a stadia vr headset? Could slimmer headsets use this to their advantage?
Amazing episode brother! I felt like I was watching a Hollywood production! Transitions so smooth couldn’t stop watching.
Dang, 2.6k views in 12 minutes, nice
Always enjoy your editing and opinions, thanks for the video!
As a Quest 1 user, it's disappointing to see that they're dropping social features and I don't really get the decision frankly. I get stopping updates, that always happens, but I don't see why they'd drop social features specifically. I use mine with Virtual Desktop as a wireless PCVR headset and it's still going strong, so I'll continue doing that for the foreseeable future.
And I'm honestly not sure when I'll upgrade, I'm really just waiting for a headset that does everything my Quest can, but is significantly more compact and comfortable. Even after doing upgrades like the Vive strap and VRCover interface, comfort is still my biggest issue with my Quest.
ok so the end screen on this video was a strait up banger. I love the work you do on your videos and I love how you are constantly improving them. you do great work man. keep it up 👍
I love the outro song. Keeps me watching till the end. Always a quality production.
Quest 1 will always have a place in my heart. It was the headset that introduced me to VR and it was my first vr headset. The VR industry right now would be so much different if the quest was not made. Sure VR had a very small but dedicated community before the quest, but the quest made VR more wide stream. RIP quest 1.
Same for me. It kinda got me through the pandemic... Psychologically mostly intact.
Surprisingly Quest is the most affordable as a gaming device and pack full features than anything before or after it
Yeah, the quest 1 is the thing that got me into vr and got me through the pandemic, it sucks that they're just going to drop it, so much nostalgia from it.
@@jaxmax9618 Drop what?? I heard you can still use it to play apps, games, and online
@@jaxmax9618 I mean it makes sense. Older software holds back developers for the new headsets. It is what it is.
I still have have original Quest and I've always looked forward to the idea of upgrading to the Quest 2 and passing my old headset to a friend so we could play together. The fact that that's no longer an option almost makes me not want to buy the Quest 2 at all. If I've already missed half of its lifespan and they're just going to brick the last gen a couple years after a new one comes out, what is even the point of getting a Quest 2. What's preventing them from discontinuing service the moment the Quest 3 drops. Buying a VR headset is not a an inexpensive investment and I hate the idea of it not being fully usable in a year or two.

I really want to upgrade from my Quest to something that is preferably pc based since the oculus air connection has been incredibly shaky for me lately. I still think an Index would be the best option, but I still feel like maybe I should hold off on it since Valve is supposedly still working on a new vr headset.
Wait, wouldn't it be cheaper to just buy a link cable? My 16ft long one was $20 on Amazon! Consider that instead
@@biankah That was one of the first things I purchased when I got my headset. The USB port on it won't hold a stable connection to my pc anymore.

Was looking at the meganex but the HTC vive xr elite seems to be the only alternative to a small new generation form factor from any major company.
As a quest 1 user, I don't fully expect full support, but do not hinder our ability to exist, yeah the natural evolution leads to pcvr, a lot of virtual desktop vrchat over the last month, but I really don't want them to treat this as if it's the 3ds of the modern era, (the version getting abandoned by Nintendo) It's just hard knowing such an important piece of vr history, to me and many others might just be nothing more than a mention in the empire of vr meta is building. Forgetting who helped them build it.

HEYO thanks for putting me in the meme break. Much love bro
I started playing roblox in 2007. I was the 350,000th ish account. I would cry if I got to see some of my childhood places that I spent time as a kid in VR. Roblox would make an ABSOLUTE dent in the VR game space. There is something for everyone on there. Everything from fleshed out shooters to kids games.
Want phantom forces in VR. Heck Starcape too so i have something that even remotely looks like No Man's Sky
Yeah, the Vr Hands experience in Roblox is pretty well done. If they can invest into making games like that officially supported, it'd really put a fire under Meta's ass.

Quest 2 already exists
Well it'll look like shit, but you can actually lower the resolution in SteamVR. Also obviously it's not the same, but VRChat at least can actually be played in desktop mode, and it performs a _lot_ better.
Did you get the 2 year warranty? If so you can break a part like the controller and bring it in and claim the warranty and you will get a quest 2.
@@lucasonfire_5214 First that would be immoral. Second, no they just would either deny it or send you a refurbished guest 1.
@@TheWildcat_YT First, who cares if you think it's immoral or not, you are getting a horrible deal with your quest now not able to be used. Second, they would not deny it as it is a 100% warranty, and they will give you a quest 2 (as long as the monetary value is the same or you may have to pay a bit more) as they simply do not sell quest 1's anymore. I know this because this is how I got my quest 2.

Oculus Quest Support change was invitiable, but atleast do it as on the go and unlock the os. BUt i guess meta likes to produce e-waste
I'm kind of confused why the Quest 1 would become unusable for PCVR as you mentioned at 5:39.

Also I'm rather glad they're tearing out all those "social features" if I'm honest.
Is there any word on how long the store for the Quest 1 will continue to be available?

Ask Reddit, they know everything
My bet would be that the Quest 1 itself would be capable of using PCVR, but the Oculus desktop app will likely stop supporting it. If I'm right, you could still use it as long as you make sure your Oculus app can never update. And even then, the internet is full of people who hate facebook so they may take it into their own hands anyway.
He didn't say that.
@@chibi_bb9642 Good thing I've never used the Oculus desktop app for my PCVR adventures then :P
@@cenciende9401 he says the following "I do actually know quite a few people that love the original Quest not as a standalone headset [...] but as an OLED PCVR link headset. And to those people, yeah it actually does kind of suck that a headset that could be used indefinitely [...] is pretty much just getting the chopping block after this year".
While he does not say it outright, it is heavily implied with this choice of words. Otherwise, why talk about it getting the chopping block in the context of PCVR?
To explain why the PSVR2 probably won't work on PC, it's mainly because the tracking data will be in a proprietary formate meant only for the PS5
The thing about the PSVR1 is all the tracking was done externally with lights on the headset and controllers, so it was easy to reverse engineer that, honestly "reverse engineer" is a bit of a stretch, it was more so just tracking the lights
But the PSVR2 uses inside out tracking with infrared light, so we could at best externally tracking the controllers, but the headset tracks itself, so you'd need to be able to get and use that tracking data
And this all assumes Sony doesn't try and actively stop the use of the headset on PC, they could easily make the headset check for a PS5 and shut itself down if it doesn't detect one
It does suck that the quest is going. It’s my go to wireless option when I don’t feel like dragging around my vive pro. Hopefully someone can release an open OS that let’s us use it for PC still
It’ll be interesting to see how Rec Room will be able to handle Roblox should it officially come to quest. If enough worlds support a VR mode it could destroy rec room.
Without traditional VR support Roblox will not be able to get even close to Rec Room in terms of VR popularity

id say you should get a valve index. i mean, its in the price range of the index! but really its a good headset but the one tip i have if you get it is to take it off and wipe the lenses if you sweat too much, then use it again.
So I want to get back into PCVR. My Rift S died last year (suddenly and immediately after a firmware update, and Meta customer support was not very supportive suggesting my cable must have broken in the time between by using it and the update finishing an hour later) and I don't know what to do now. I really don't know if I want a quest 2, because like I said, customer support just sucked and I am afraid it'll lose support long before I'm done using it. And I can't exactly afford a new headset every couple years. Do I actually have any options? I heard Pico are impossible to get right now and also have mixed reviews.
Ooh Cabby made it on Thrills meme break!!
Cabby is awesome
curious to see if AX1690 $30 upgrade card will actually work? From what I read, they want you to upgrade to newest intel cpu to gain this support...
what vrchat world was that in the meme break? It looks awesome
Love to see you do a video on the quest 2 and issues with linking to pcvr.
I know I'm not the only one out there with issues. Virtual desktop works great, but sometimes you need a cabled link
I did not get the aspect of no PC gaming on Quest 1... Why would it not work?
Will you still be able to use the oculus store on a quest 1?
