  • I wrecked my '97 Miata last Spring, and I recorded the repairs that I made - even before I had this CZcams channel created! Part 2 focuses on swapping out the rear subframe...and a few extras.
    Part 1 of this video: • I Wrecked My Miata!! P...
    The subframe was purchased from Planet Miata: www.planet-miata.com/
    The delrin differential bushings are from Garage Star: garagestar.com/blog/product/de...
    All video was recorded and edited on my iPhone.
    Music was written and recorded by me.

    I really like these detailed video's! Are you going to do a separate video about changing the fuel filter?

      @BecauseMiata  Před 7 lety +1

      I'm not sure to be honest. The footage that I have here is all that I got when I did the job last year, so we'll see. I may.

      +MiataMods the more I think about it, yes, I think my channel should have a separate video for fuel filters. It's an important topic that needs to be discussed. Thanks for the suggestion!

    My new subframe is coming this week and I will be taking on this project soon. Thanks for posting the video. Any updates on the alignment since you posted this video?

    • @BecauseMiata
      @BecauseMiata  Před 3 lety

      The alignment has never been perfect since the accident. Even after swapping the subframe. The shell that sits on the subframe is slightly bent too, and that can't be fixed in my driveway. A body shop with expensive tools may be able to fix that. That being said, I've taken it to an alignment shop and it is aligned within factory spec...not perfect, but still within spec. I'm happy with the results.

    Thanks for the video. finally a video for how to remove a mx5 rear subframe. Just want to know the time it took you to remove and refit?

    • @BecauseMiata
      @BecauseMiata  Před 7 lety +1

      +Mana Cassiopaea it took me a few days because I was filming it and also got sidetracked doing other jobs since I already had it taken apart. Check out my other videos that I made during this job. The Upper control arm video first, then this subframe video, then the delrin differential video, then the stainless braided brake lines video. It's an easy job, but the hardest part is just getting to it. You have to remove the brake lines, differential and power plant frame before you can drop the subframe. If I had to do it again without filming or the other extra stuff I did, I could do it in about 5-6 hours. Depending on your skill level and with the right tools, I bet someone could do it in 3-4 hours.

    I took an impact to my rear wheel and just realized i have the same EXACT problem

  • @ricorobinson7418
    @ricorobinson7418 Před 5 lety

    i had the same wheel placement on the same side after i crashed into a curb, I can tell that my upper control arm is bent, cuz.... its bent lol. But where the arm mounts to the subframe, i noticed i kinda have the same gap as yourrs, when you replaced the subframe, did you still have the gap?

    • @BecauseMiata
      @BecauseMiata  Před 5 lety

      Rico Robinson the gap is much smaller now. Still not perfect but it now can be aligned into spec. Before swapping the subframe it would not align.

    If you focused for one 8 hour day on just removing and replacing the subframe do you think that would be possible ?

    • @BecauseMiata
      @BecauseMiata  Před 6 lety

      Eric Kable absolutely yes! I spent so much time working on the differential bushings and also trying to remove one of the axles from the diff. Just be aware that you need to remove the brake lines, so you’ll need to bleed them. I have another video for a one man brake bleed. You’ll also need to remove the power plant frame. I spent a lot of time trying to remove the bolts at the back by the diff. It was easier and quicker to remove the bolts on the PPF up front by the transmission. If I had to do it again, would take me about 4 hours (assuming I didn’t run into any stuck bolts). Let me know if you run into any problems and I’ll do my best to offer guidance. Buy a ratchet gun...makes the job easier/quicker.

      Because Miata that's awesome man! I'm from hammond I got a miata last year and I one morning I fishtailed in the rain and went over a median and it ruined my alignment so I'm in the process of getting that fixed

    • @BecauseMiata
      @BecauseMiata  Před 6 lety +1

      Javier Diaz I’m in Chicago, walking distance from Hammond. Yep I have the same issue with alignment. You’ll mostly need to look at control arms, and subframes.

    how long did this job take you?

    • @BecauseMiata
      @BecauseMiata  Před 5 lety

      Max Crowe it’s difficult to say for a couple of reasons. I filmed it, so that takes a bunch of time. I also decided to install my diff bushings while I had it off the car, and that took a lot of time too. Depending on your skill set, and the right tools it could take 3-4 hours minimum. You’ll need to remove and reassemble the rear brakes and bleed them. Not a big deal if you’ve done it before. It may be a learning curve if you’ve never done it. If you get stuck on a specific step, I can try to help you as best I can online to point you in the right direction.

    • @BecauseMiata
      @BecauseMiata  Před 5 lety

      Wow, that's crazy. Mine arrived in a box, and it still had some places that I had to bend back into place, like the tab where the brake splitter bolts onto. yeah man, look it over to make sure there is no damage.

    diff sizes are different so is you break one you still have a socket for the other- woke.
