Looks like a lot of fun. Like someone else already said. Tall skinnys and chains will make you unstoppable. I had a similar power problem in my 63 109. I could only run one thing at a time or the battery would discharge. Hard to do in the Alaskan winter, you could see or stay warm but not both at the same time. :-) I upgraded to a disco alternator and solved the problem.
I have winter tyres on my BMW E60 530i and my '87 Ford (Granada) Scorpio. I was going up slopes in the Scorpio in the snow that FWD hatchbacks couldn't do.
:) this is less snow then we have daily all winter. My LR s2 had never problem in 50cm snow. But 2cm and 0 degree could stop it. It's the temp that make snow slippery. With studs no problem.

Hi Hayden, that was a great trip, nothing like trying to drive in snow, I have not seen snow like that since ChCh was closed down for a day in 1992, safe driving and keep safe, best regards from a ChCh lad living in Melbourne.
@@hayden_jones Series Land Rovers still seem to be very capable, a good few years ago an old S2 88" diesel outperformed my Td5 90 offroad and l the reason became apparent when the driver told me he'd fitted front and rear difflocks! also had a heater unit out of a 1990 VW Polo fitted complete with the 3 speed fan, it certainly made a difference to his interior, a good mod for Series Land Rovers in cold climates is heated windscreens, had them on an ex MOD FFR l had and never needed the blower for the windshield, great scenery by the way.
Thanks for the brilliant comment. I've always wondered about heated windscreens, I'll definitely look into it because my front windows are nearing the end of their life.
My '96 Disco, petrol, automatic can do 24 inches of fresh powder through the woods and pastures, with no roads. My (past) '61 2A 109 could do more. I think it's the tires and the style of driving that make the difference. Also, here in the U.S., we'll use the strap and branch method of getting unstuck.
I run heated screens on my series 3 Make such a difference and the elements built in are so thin you cant see 15 amp per screen so can select driver or driver plus passenger side but have 70 amp alternator
Hi, I normally take my red series 1 on trips but occasionally the RRC comes out to play. It's an early MY84 built around Sept 83 so one of the first 5 speeds. Has the carburetted 3.5 V8, wonderful at turning fuel into sweet noise (-:
@@danielfoster1956 yes, I remember my 78 RR ... in New Zealand, uhm ... you got the metric system, right? Well it was the 3,5l. Hayden, as Canadian who lives in the snow belt known as the Kootenays, I can honestly say that after a lifetime of shoveling this white shit, ANY SNOW IS TOO MUCH SNOW. The fact that you have to drive to find it is the only redeeming factor. I always thought that I would put a snow shovel on the front of my truck and head south until some asked what is that? 61 years this year is enough winter for me... How much snow....all of it. Hahaha Get some quality snow chains. They work well on mud and rock, not just snow and cheaper than lockers but not quite as good.😉
Newest Landy here is 20 years old. Audi Q5 is a modern vehicle that isn't really that good. Put it up against a similar age LR, like a D4, and see which one wins. My $$$ is on the LR.
@@hayden_jones For most outside shots a Canon M50 with the kit lens or a 50mm F1.4, for the inside vehicle shots and some outside a hero 10 and I also have a Dji mini 2
Nice ride folks! What was the tyre pressure you used in that kind of snow? I´ve heard some people deflate them up to 12 lbs ...Amazing vehicles and great craftsmanship!!!
I can't remember what psi we had, I think we were all fully inflated (30-38psi at a guess) but yeah I think dropping to 17-18 psi is good, more grip, and less chance of the tyre coming off the rim.
Hi Hayden, I also tried to drive my 2x4 last month in snowy region of Pakistan. It was my first experience to drive in snow. I concluded that, to enjoy the drive in snow one must have an off-road 4x4 vehicle with chains on its wheels. At one point in the journey, I got my car towed by a Toyota Landcruiser to get it out of snow and mud. Have a glimpse of the journey: czcams.com/video/zgMqEPftF7Y/video.html
235/85R16 are by no means "big fat wheels". They suit my land rover for what I use it for. I can't go any bigger (or fatter!!) And if I have smaller tyres I'd really struggle getting to a lot of places. This tyre size is very common on old landy's 😁 Hope you enjoyed the video
Hey mate, thanks for chiming in with your hilarious take on my bonnet figurine! I must admit, I sometimes wonder if it brings a curse upon my car rather than good luck. But hey, every time it falls off, I just stick it back on and pray to the car gods for divine protection! Maybe one day, it'll gain superpowers and start granting wishes. Until then, let's hope it at least scares away birds from using my car as their personal runway. Thanks for the laugh, and remember, if you ever need a good luck charm for your own ride, I've got just the thing! Stay awesome! 🚗✨

We drive RWD cars on roads like this in Norway. The only difference would be actual winter tires. Makes a huge difference :-)
Night and day difference, especially with some chains, since your wheel speed is so low off-road.

Yes, I know but dragging with summers isn't as effective as pushing with winters.
