- A bit of a weird one - but I've had a secret desire to build one of these and this deal was just too good to pass up! I'm excited to get back to wrenching with something low-stress I can have fun with. Going to need your help though - because this is out of my comfort zone!!
LZMFG.com
No surprise that john drove it 4 hours lmao, such a legend 😂
Was probably a half hour drive but he drove it round for 4 lol
@@griff420blazer4 If so I wouldn’t blame him. That little car zips tf out and sounds so good 😂
I like the part where he says "had to test if both wheels spin or not"
He can keep anything running. Even hertz’s cars
John said the shift light is set to low it comes on at 6 grand 🤣 love the Vargas bros man
The "wheel hop" you're feeling is more likely axle wrap, which occurs because the diff is, as you said "floating" there are no arms that keep the differential from rotating which causes the pinion angle to change when the leaf springs compress. A simple fix would be a pair of Caltracs, however depending on what you plan to do with the car, drifting, drag racing, or track driving. You may want to look into a parallel 4-link with a watts link or track bar.
Definitely the diff bounce bud we still rock these in new zealand
4 link needed.
Agreed man 👍🏼
Or cal trac bars
I'm probably more excited for this series than any others you've done. The car is cool & we'll finally get a legit collab with both of you guys.
Hell yeah, going to be some great videos. I think the best videos are when they are doing builds together... also gotta love any unique rotary swaps
@@slim_gs3005 p0
Welcome to Datsun life! You picked up a solid little car! The front steering slop is likely because of the drag link. I'm not sure if you can grab a drag link for the 1200, but if you cant look at the 620, 510, and 610. Datsun was really good about parts interchangeability much like the later Nissans.
Another suggestion would be to look for front brake upgrades to match the larger rear brakes on the 9". The tiny front brakes were made to pair with rear drums and sized to marginally stop a 80hp beast, much less 4 times that. I would look to see if you can swap the front struts hubs brakes and all for 280ZX units, which is a common upgrade in the 510 community.
The rear springs on the straight axle Datsuns were always really soft. The soft springs coupled with weak shocks are a huge contributor to the wheel hop. An old trick to stiffen the leaf spring was to add another leaf to the spring stack to increase the spring rate.
Seeing Adam bamboozled by a solid axle made my day
I thought he'd use solid rear axles
@@nicktidey6660Most car builds with a solid axle have a 4-link or watts link. Regular leaf spring setups are pretty much only on trucks these days so it's not surprising that he hasn't seen this kind of thing before
It's mind blowing to me that he's so experienced in cars but has no idea what a solid axel is or the setups lol
An American that doesn't know American stuff 🤣 classic.
It made me so proud that I knew something he didn't lol
Felt like an old LZ video. Probably my favorite video in a long time. Sweet little car man. Glad to see you happy and enjoying it.
Dude, that rotary chop and the revs are so addictive.
I think it’s cool how when FD comes through to Orlando, your compound is now a spot for teams to stop by and fix a few bits before the next round or store the car for the time being
In Aus we put 200B front ends in our 1600s.510s for you yanks.
I believe a Datsun 200B front end well @ least the struts will fit the 1200.
If you want to keep the leaf springs, look into traction bars (also called slapper bars sometimes). 4 link or even just ladder bars would be the way I would go with it though
Second this was thinking traction bars honestly a cool drag car would be cool with the turbo 13b
Caltracs makes some universal kits and some for small trucks that'd work. Make one for a hardbody with a 9inch that'd be close.
iS tHaT a sTrAiGhT aXlE?
iS tHaT hOw a sTrAiGhT aXlE iS sUPpOSeD tO mOuNt? 🥴🥴🥴
Is it a Ford 9in or a 8.8 🥴
@Berm_Blaster the man is messing with something he's not familiar with. No reason to throw shade/make fun of him for it. And an 8.8 has a cover that bolts on the rear of the housing like most rear diffs. So did you mean an 8in? Because it's definitely a 9 like he said lol
That Datto 1200 Coupe will give you lots of smiles. In Australia that rotory swap is very common in those cars. Fit old school Tramp-Rods to the leaf-springs to stop axle hop.
Same here in NZ. Along with old E20 series Corollas
For wheel hop, look into Calvert Racing's Caltracs Traction Bars, and a new set of adjustable shocks to dial in your ride quality. At least these are a good place to start. Excited to see where the build goes! I was for sure thinking this was going to be a shell for an Australian style Blower Burnout Car build!
To get rid of that axel wrap (wheel hop) the easy way would be traction bars which act as kinda a lateral bars that you would find in a 4-link but to completely eliminate the wheel hop especially if you plan on putting more power to it definitely go with a 4 link which will also allow you to use coil overs.
This is 100% by far my fave car of yours already! Don't think I've smiled as much watching any of your videos as this. Mega light + Rotary = Awesome
Same. Completely unexpected move by Adam.
@Totenkopf_88 id love to but a decent transverse or transaxle box to fit a 13B ain’t easy and rotary prices have got stupid too so can’t see it happening
As soon as I seen the muffler/tip, I had a feeling it was a rotary. I'd personally swap the rear end to a four link. Would plant the tires so much better and more adjustability. But, if you're wanting to keep the leaf springs, get a traction bar setup. I'm so excited to see the content on this! Good find Adam!!!
Just needs a few extra leaf clamps on the front half to stop when twisting drag racers poor man traction bars
It for sure needs either a 4 link or caltracs. Can't wait to see what he does with it.
Thank you Adam, seeing this car brought back so many great childhood memories growing up. My dad had a baby blue Datsun 120Y here in South Africa and that was our family car growing up. It took us on vacations, visiting family, it took us everywhere, until sadly it broke down and my dad was no longer able to fix it.
I'm super sad that my dad sold the car before I even had a drivers license and to this day I would give anything to have that car in my garage to work on it and drive on weekends.
My one friend had a 1200 with a SR20DET built into it, thing was a beast of note and super fun toy to do skids with 😃
Don't know whether you will read this or not,
But an Australian Company *Maddat Motorsport*
have a crazy amount of Stuff for Anything to do with datsuns with Any kind of engine swap
Alot of Rotary Goodies in there Like.
Brake booster & clutch kit for Rotaries,
Billet adjustable lower control arms .,
Front coilover strut kits,
Adjustable rebuilt front end kits,
Adjustable swaybar .
Strut brace .
Rebuilt rear control arms,
Adjustable rear crossmember
All the bushings
lowered rear springs
front disc conversion Kits
Your rear shocks look like Koni which are used alot
Friggin love it! Collette’s reactions to new cars are always super entertaining too. Talk to your boy Cleet or Chelsea about solid axel hop stuff. They should be able to get you right.
I highly doubt either know how to sort leaf springs
Adam is a certified Puerto Rican 😂👌🏻 this car is definitely the average Puerto Rican mans weekend car 🇵🇷😭
love the Puerto Rican rotary scene, only one that can compare to the new zealand scene, much love
@@cira7354 you’re right about that!! New Zealand’s car builds are definitely top tier 👍🏻 much respect!!
The world's palest (is that a word?) Boricua, lmao.
@@cira7354 aussie too, well some parts of it lol
100% 😂
Brilliant! My first love was the wagon version, we called it Buzzy. I still have a photo next to my bed. They have so much character and you will love it forever. Bloody awesome
The genuine joy is amazing. All the amazing cars and this gives Adam this much joy is one of the many reasons him and Collette are 2 of my favorites
I really hope the two of you do this together. It would be such a treat for all of us 🙏
Now THAT is an absolute beast. So amazing your loving the small chasis car 🇵🇷🇵🇷 rotary for life ! Your slowly becoming borica !!!! So pumped for this been waiting for a big CZcamsr to bring a rotary build into light !
These Datsun models hold a special, sentimental value in my heart. Love the buy!
DAMNNN I like thisssss !!
WHATS GOOD SLAP!! Gotta bang some doors on assetto soon again bro
Yo my man slap
This isn’t nothing new , florida is the epicenter for rotary cars .
No hesi this one !
Who the heck are you????
For the wheel hop, put on some traction bars if you want to keep the leaf springs and adjustable rear shocks, should help quite a bit.
I think the main issue is all the rooted bushings and ball joints lol and old tyres tend to wheel hop.
I've seen people use washers instead of subframe bushings for wheel hop
This thing is definitely getting built like the CRX and I’m so excited for it. I freaking love old cars! This is like the perfect project car.
Oldest car me and a bunch of friends got to work on was a 1932 Buick s class . Really a experience you can never forget. Turning a pile of rush and scattered parts into a run in inline 8 that does burnouts
Cal tracks and adjustable shocks should fix the wheel hop. I love the sketch level of this. Sounds so good too.
The old Datsuns, where everywhere when I was a kid.(120,180,240, sunnies, bluebirds)Even had a few mates owning them for first cars.. they got parity cheap here in Australia back in the day.
Old cars just give the right cruise feels LOL that little thing is deff cool! I like the Weld wheels and your reaction to the shank lug nuts. My 90 foxbody also has four lug fronts, converted the rear to 5 lug when I built it up for drag.
Such a sick little rig 👌 So glad it’s not getting a fart box SR in it! Please keep those wheels on it too, they suit it so well 😎
25:04 "Oh, you looking at my 9 inch?"
Behave big fella 😂
You can’t go wrong with the sound of a rotary !! 🔥🔥🔥
Awesome car! My best mate had a 1200 coupe with a big lumpy cam in it which sounded great. He has now passed and this video has made me really think about building something similar in his memory.
I love these rotary car videos.
I absolutely love adam and I'm glad there's alot more rotory content
You can get rid of wheel hop with traction bars if you're staying with the current axle/leaf combo. If you need more knowledge then I'd look at classic American muscle cars or even street truck builds that have kept the solid axle setup. Glad to see you journey in to classics cars finally! 😁 Also axle wrap is a thing with leaf springs
Wheel hop cause by the leaf springs wrapping under load, a slapper bar, cal tracs, or some traction bars will fix most of the issues with wheel hop. Imo traction bars are the best about of all these giving the axle a stronger connection between the chassis of the car and the axle and a more rigid and longer lasting set up.
I have a soft spot for old Datsons. First car I ever drove was my mom’s 210 wagon in ‘86 ‘87. We drove that car from Iowa to D.C. to Virginia Beach to Iowa to Colorado and back
Great idea to do a build with Collette
Love the datsun! The first thing with a atraight axle is make sure the shocks are in good condition and not blown, second is the leaf spring bushings, third is make sure the lead springs arent weak and the last is tires. Run the right air pressure for the weight of the car.
My heart melted when she asked if it was already warmed up lol🥲😂
The wheel hop is a combination of things. Under load torque twists the whole axle on the springs and could break the leaf springs.
A full link setup and coilovers would be the ultimate fix. Or run track bars/ladder bars with the leafs if you want to keep it simple. Decent shocks will help but wont eliminate the issue completely.
I love Pete just sitting in the background at 24:30.
Lol Colletes face when she turned around hearing the engine, and her instictually climbing under the car haha!
Bud I really love Collettes style in dressing really different... she wears what makes her happy...
I had a 510 as my first car and a mate from school had a 1200 coupe.we both wanted a 1200 ute.70's datto's have a special place in my heart
Keep the rotary engine on it 👍🏼👍🏼
That's such a perfect combo of a car + motor, so entertaining watching Adam get this happy 😂😂
Brings me back to the late 90's and early 00's, we use to see these roam the streets in Australia. Hawkin's can probably tell you some great stories of rotary powered Datto's
I love when Adam and Collette film content together. 🥰🫶
A live rear axel, common with ford in the 60's. I think we in the uk call that an Atlas The tech is still raced to this day. i raced them for years, Super light weight (700lbs 200-240 HP)simple high grip race cars called Mallocks. Similar system but no leaf springs and with a double watts linkage ( mumford link)with trailing control arms with 3 or 4 pickup points on the chassis for honing the suspension on the rear end. It puts the theoretical roll centre 3 inches below the road surface. Massive amounts of mechanical grip.
I love that car and the rotary is the cherry on the cake. I am looking forward to seeing the build series on this car more than any other car on this channel. I hope you put it back to new and rebuild the motor with a bigger turbo. 600 hp on that small car will be insane. Congratulations on this beautiful car.
Datsuns always bring smiles!
I have a Datsun 240z, fucking love it.
Adam wheel hop can be easily fixed by installing a traction bar. Caltrak makes a kit. Your car sits high at the rear, which amplifies the problem. Also, put a good quality adjustable rear shock in and install a limited slip differential
If you want to keep the leaf springs.. You can replace the shocks with better omes. Along with adding helper springs and trac bars. That will make a ton of difference. The other way is going to a 4 link setup
I would love to see you do a full resto mod on this. Custom chassis, custom suspension, it would be sick to be able to actually use the 500hp without possibly dying
Keep it simple
Date night cruiser
worth more the way it sits than customizing stuff lol
Mint little car brother hilarious seeing you and Collette head out the compound bouncing seeing Collette’s face 😂😂 she’ll be right! Unique little car too minor mods do so much for something like that so we look forward to it join the squad 🙏💯
There are many things that can control wheel hop. Traction bars, ladder bars or a pinion snubber all would help but the go to solution these days for leaf springs.seems to be Cal Tracs. You might want to talk to Jackstand Jimmy . He runs an Import Drag Solutions 8.8 conversion in his 240 so they may be able to help you out.
Getting rid of wheel hop on a lixe axle you generally want stiffer springs, good shocks, proper ride height and a full 4link system, don't bother with a panhard or some halfway solution.
Otherwise you can ditch the leaf setup and fab in some trailing arms, a wattslink and use coilovers instead.
absolutely LOVE that car! perfect old school fast import. i'd keep the Weld Draglites on it and preserve the overall look of the car. for the wheelhop you can do old school traction bars or the newer style Cal-Tracs. Nitto or Mickey Thompson drag radials too
already my favorite car you own. need to do a tip in with it for sure 🇦🇺
I love it mate im a hudge old school Dato fan. That will be a little weapon once you tune it & tidy a few things up. A 13B turbo PP in a 1200 is off the chain. Definitely worth putting a 4 link rear end in it.
I love that your girl loves it.
Yes!!!! I have one with turbo 1.8ltr. caltracs (traction bars) eliminated wheel hop completely.
Love this!! We have a lot of Datsuns with swaps and a lot of 120ys and more with swaps🇹🇹
I love how excited Adam is to build an old Datsun. I know the feeling lol.
Get rid of the leaf springs and go 4 link, gives you all the control you want over the rear. Chelsea has that setup on his foxbody, and its what most solid axle dudes run. Then I'd swap out all the drums to an endless kit, clean up the engine bay, fab new exhaust + wastegate(fab work sketchy rn), fix the sketchy fueling and wiring, and a cozy interior, not much else, already makes too much power anyway haha.
First thing I said before he even fired it up...Puerto Rican Car! I found my love for KP61 from them except I run a SR20DET in mine.
Nothing like a rotary can't wait to see what you do with it
Excited to see what you do with this fun lil guy! ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥PS I loved seeing Collette's reaction. I knew she would love it. When you get it all fixed up, you gotta take us with you to a BBQ! Brraap Braap!
Cal-tracs will fix that wheel-hop for sure! They plant the rear tires without binding up the suspension, and are very easy to install.
Wheel hop stops with ladder bars…the reason it’s hopping is the leaf springs turn inside out and back a bunch under power…that’s the reason for a 4 link rear, because the rear ends so soft
New shocks in the rear would help with the wheel hop. Great find by the way.💯🔧🚗🏁® And old school traction bars.
I don’t think just shocks is gonna do it. I’ve experienced This before and you’ve gotta get something to brace it
Yeah I said shocks would help. You can also get traction bars!!!💯🔧🚗🏁®
This is 100% the best project you have done ahaha
Adam I literally jumped out of my chair of happiness when I seen this 😍 this is the best car you have
I saw so many of these cars in my early days...
Slowly, they disappeared from the streets.
I started seeing them all rusted out, on people's land.
Nowadays, I really do not see them for years.
I am glad there are still good units out there, so younger people can see the design of older cars.
Moreover, they can see how tiny cars were sufficient in the past.
Can't wait to see what you do with this.
That may be the most Puerto Rican car ever 😊
or aussie and New Zealand.
Love the pure excitement on Adams face driving this car.
Adam, I love these car. Keep the road reading it the best way I can think of of getting rid of axle. Tramp is tramp bars that go from the front of the leaf spring to just underneath the diff that's what drag races use back in oz with leaf spring rear end. Once again, love the car
Hell yea more rotary content 🤙🏾
The smiles and laughs after buying a car is a feeling a man HAS to feel in their life (I havent bought my first car yet)
For wheel hop we GTI guys usually upgrade the dogbone/pendulum/rear engine mount to reduce wheel hop. Its pretty affective.
Im from Australia and ive only ever known wheel hop as axle tramp and to fix that issue would be a set of tramp rods (stabilizer bars) under the leaf springs , they use do this with old holdens back in the 70s and 80s
20:00 Adam’s fed up 😂😂😂😭
niceeeee. more old school japanese builds please. 80's or 70's preferably!
Wheel hop probably from shocks being old/soft/blown out with old leafs. get better replacement shocks and a new slightly stiffer leafs and itll help immensely
Fantastic buy Adam!!! Well done!!!! In RSA🇿🇦, these are very popular... Datsun1200gx.... Rotary swop is awesome, as you can swop almost anything into it.
Ps, buy the sunny truck (datsun1200/1400 champ) from Rudnik, and swop a 350z engine into it. We have one going on the local drag scene, and it's a mad sleeper. We have a 7 second 2jz engined one on drags as well. The sky is the limit. AWESOME BUY!!!!!
Damn, @colletedavis turned Adam into a rotary boy.......nice.
As soon as I saw the wheels I had a strong suspicion that it was a rotary lol
Being Puerto Rican I knew before I even clicked on the video so much nostalgia
@@Lsx_Penguin exactly, bro acts like florida isn’t the epicenter for rotaries sport compact cars . Hopefully he supports the osw import races
being aussie I knew it had to have a rotary in it
lol ikr the wheels were hella suspicious, knew it right away :)
@@wishtheyunderstoodme Yea same, as soon as i saw the 1200 i knew she'd be 13b
I don't know if anyone has said it yet but the old haltech ecus worked on injector on time in milliseconds at any engine load and rpm bracket, not the easiest thing to tune as there's a lot to account for and it takes a while, but deffinetly doable if you're willing to put in the effort, just have a external wide band o2 up the exhaust and tune to the afr
Solid axle causes wheel hop go 4 link and the arms keep the axle from rotating or 3 link with a panhard bar to keep the axle stationary coilovers or different shocks will also help also shiming the leaf springs to get a different angle to change the driveshaft angle will help also
but! can it drift?
Rear axle would separate from chassis
This needs to be a drag build!!
GODDAMN!!! Not gonna lie, I'm SERIOUSLY looking forward to seeing the progress of this build.....I'm already booking flights from Scotland to get over and see this 🤘🏻😁🤤❤🤣
In cape town south Africa we strap the diff with chain for the wheel bounce ...or use another set of leaf springs and join the two to make it stronger 💪
Man this is sick but would still love to see a sr20 in it lol
The first car I remember was my Dad's car a Datsun 180B. The 1200 ute is also a beast some in Australia running a CA18DET are running 9's. If you want a real gem with a rotary engine go an old skool Mazda RX3 these are all classic JDM Aussie delivered cars.
Very Australian as well as Puerto Rican, they have plenty off them build like this over there. Ask Cleetus; they deal with this all day in drag racing and fairly recently added a full custom 4-link setup to the back of Leroy. Or have a look at the Skid Factory where they put one in both his big block Crown build (and did a good explanation on geometry) as well as the drag car they are building now. 4-link is the way to go if you want to get it done right the first time. Given the popularity of the chassis I wouldn't be surprised if somebody makes a weld in kit for it.
The floor BTW is just replaced by flat sheets of metal, OEM it would have beadrolls in it the strengthen it up.
Following from PR…I had 2 Datsun 210….need to redo the rear…reinforce the rear before you lose it…3/4 chasis with ladder bars adjustable front links and adjustable shocks…the brackets to the leaf springs are its weakest points…heads up
