  • Payday 3 was highly anticipated, but after seven years of development, it launched with multiple bugs and far less content than its predecessor. In this video, I'll break down what happened to this once-promising game.
From the troubled development history to the missing features, we explore why Payday 3 is struggling. Is it the financial issues Starbreeze faced? The lack of offline mode? Or the disappointing in-game content?

What happened to Payday? All the people who made it good, and understood what made it good, left the company.

@@BurnoutJack Fun fact: Out of all the people who worked on Payday: The Heist (who went on to create Payday 2), there's only one left that works at Starbreeze, and I think he's the guy that designed the masks.

PayDay 2 is on Skyrim Legend Level. The Soundtrack from Simon Vicklund and LaCastle Vania just is amongst the best Soundtracks ever presented in a Videogame.

4:22 That's basically it, dude. OVERKILL were the ones that designed the gameplay for PD:TH and the sequel, all that Starbreeze did was screw things up after the original devs left in 2015 and OVERKILL essentially disbanding from that.
Starbreeze had little to no input in the design of the first two games, they only offered some support sometime during the making of PD2. But even then PD2 was built literally on top of PD:TH, you should consider watching some E3 and Alpha footages so you can get a better idea of this, you could use voicelines from The Heist in 2 if you knew how to code mods and even Houston had some leftover Hoxton voicelines.
The majority if not entirety of the PD:TH code was reused in the making of 2 with new features being added onto it so it was ultimately an upgrade or a remake.
Starbreeze was only able to touch PD2 after CrimeFest 2015, which, well.. resulted in the Goat Simulator DLC. Not a very good start and a sign of future going slowly downhill eventually.
The game was meant to be focused on the rather hardcore part of the PD:TH community I believe, requiring teamwork and some kind of plan to succeed in more difficult heists, letting you have bragging rights in the said community when you finished a difficult heist in full stealth or beat it on highest difficulty etc.
There was a lot of neat little things that were sprinkled in to keep things dynamic, unpredictable and.. feel alive, I guess? Cops were able to react and get suppressed when you fire at them, stopping their objective, losing accuracy or outright trying to get away from your line of fire, hostages would delay assaults, the difficulty would increase with every assault survived, there were actual Hostage Rescue Units coming in for your hostages instead of regular cops and finally, the game's name literally had a meaning to it, everything costed money so you needed to undertake longer and more risky jobs to get your PAYDAY to fund a shiny new gun or a skill you want, it made you want to keep playing and keep upgrading yourself while trying all the new things that youre slowly unlocking one after another.
I don't think that the amount of heists available are the problem but the general feeling of how the game plays and how it works together with all of it's other elements including how the game encourages you and your team to actually try to work together.
6:40 The game was announced in 2019 but wouldn't be in actual development until late 2022 (I think). The time between 2019 and 2022 was mostly spent looking for a publisher and also on design phase. A LOT of stuff regarding models and artwork was outsourced during the period of actual game development.
You can find a PD3 Prototype on Internet Archive if you want to see how it could originally have been like.
Anyways, you got PD2 and PD3's animator to reply in your comment section, that's cool. He makes interesting insights on how various trailers were made or why there are no facial animations in the game etc.

Im so happy i didnt buy pd3, owning all the dlc for pd2 and imo the current rival to payday in general is crime boss. I hope all the devs that left to start developing den of wolves make it how pd2 was. They even proudly boast about being the original devs of payday2 in their trailer.

I mean payday 3 is really good mechanics work new maps are cool ehootings feels very good
    But then those stupid decisions
No singleplayer no crime net the progession system the lack of content
I mean sure making maps is hard but atleast give us old classics including the forst few for free lile the last game
Uncopopular oppnion but i dont think its bad to have less weapons and putfits/masks
    I never used it
Ansbsomething payday 2 players forget pd2 had the litteral same problem incluidng missing content that was promissed at release
But yea i just hope it gets better with the time maybe in 1 or 2 years

I think the key difference is payday 2 improved upon the original payday, payday 3 feels like a step In the wrong direction.
I’m still gonna play payday 3 when new content comes, but whenever I get the itching to guest pd2 is where I’ll go.

First day bugs doesn't really show much. If anything, it's expected, and it doesn't amount for that much of disgruntled player base. Besides, these are all fixable.
Lack of critical features present in previous game and generally feeling like a cash grab instead of a game is the main one.
It really feels like the game was developed by a completely different studio, as if this one suddenly forgot all their experience in how to make a good game from the pd2. Or maybe that 25% layoff was the critical people like game designers who were actually responsible for quality checks.
