    Being a car enthusiast in Italy is such a pain. I have a 2011 Impreza STI, nothing THAT special, but I always get the attention of the Police or Carabinieri. And it’s stock. Also, it’s a 13 years old car and I still have to pay over 1000€ in taxes per year. I’m lucky enough to be able to afford (somewhat) the incredibly high cost of taxes, insurance and premium gasoline (over 2€ per liter) for this car, but there’s no much money left to do cool stuff to the car. Also, I’m worried about being pulled over and get in trouble if I do some nice mods to the car. Really, I’m upset because my interest and passion for cars is slowly going away. I literally have the car that I dreamed every single night when I was a child, but just because I live in Italy, I feel like I can’t enjoy it as much as I would love to do.

    Welcome to most of Europe. I'm Portuguese and there's a guy near me with an impounded Golf IV, because his replacement OEM shocks are orange (Koni brand).
    They literally told him his car was modified because the color of the suspension. Car has stock height too. It's so bad that a CZcamsr got the community together and took it to court.

      @Danteska90 Před 3 měsíci +3

      Don't quote me on this, but I think that here in Spain the replacements can be of any brand as long as the OEM ones are discontinued. So if the car is old, you have more freedom regarding this aspect. If it's not the case, then you can always homologate the change to make it legal. Is it not the same in Portugal?

    • @Fabio4Coelho
      @Fabio4Coelho Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@Danteska90 I believe it is the same, as long as the replacements have the same specs as OEM. And these ones did. If they don't, it can't be sold legally as replacement OEM parts.
      Even the head of Koni sales was pissed of because it was hurting they sales, after the videos took off on youtube, a lot of mechanics stopped using their shocks with fear of having client's cars failed in the yearly inspection.
      That's why they took it to court, and as far as I know, they already have the car on the road after only two months, after the guy fought for 3 years alone with no results.
      This whole thing started on a traffic stop, and the police follow a very old sort of guideline manual for traffic stops. In that very manual it says clear as day that if the shocks and/or springs are colored then it's modified (And a some more bs like that) .
      There are people who have access to this manual that confirmed it, even with photos.
      Then there's another whole thing with the inspection where they failed his car for no reason (Even the radio was not safe xD) and it snowballed from there until court basically. Bit of a long story.
      Even tho they have the car on the road now, they still want to continue the fight on court so this sort of thing stops happening.

    • @Danteska90
      @Danteska90 Před 3 měsíci

      @@Fabio4Coelho it's quite the story, but seems weird to me. I follow several Portuguese pages and I have been here in several car events with people from there who have more taste and passion than most of the Spaniards, and if it were like you say, half the country would be in jail. The first Eurocrew in 2016 had about 20 cars coming from portugal and I was amazed by the quality of the modifications, and every year cars have continued to come from there...

    In Italy they do everything they can to make you hate cars! Taxes are insane, even for cheap cars. We have to pay an annual "bollo" tax based on the car's KW, and the ownership transfer fees are probably the highest in the world. A few years ago, a "technical" government introduced the "superbollo": if your car has more than 250 horsepower, the annual tax increases exponentially for each additional HP regardless of the value of the car. The roads are disaster, full of potholes. Car tuning are almost always forbidden, except for minor changes. Basically, only rich people can really enjoy their cars, since they don't have to worry about all these costs and problems.

    • @gio0042
      @gio0042 Před 3 měsíci +3

      I want to put on perspective the ownership transfer fee: a 100 CV (75 kW) car will require that you pay around ~520€, so even if you decide to give me the car for free i still need to pay the fee. I don't even know how is this thing still considered legal, no politician has ever made an effort to change this, nobody does anything. We just suck it up and go about our pathetic life

    Same in Germany. Your car can pass all checks and be 100% legal but if some cop is bored he can say it needs to be checked again and you're not allowed to drive it until it's checked again. The best thing, you have to pay for everything, even if everything is legal. Car culture in Germany is dying slowly and it's all planned

    I'm from Italy and own an Alfa Romeo Giulietta. The only thing I did was slightly modify the ECU just to get from 105 to 120 hp, changed rear bumper and mounted bigger wheels, and I am almost borderline illegal (bumper and wheels are legal only because they are already omologated by Fiat and made especially for that car). In car culture our country is a total joke, the trick to not get caught in a modified car every time by police is just don't making it too obvious.

    38:12 Shame the cops are being weird about gearheads in a country that has done so much for the automobile.
    Also, the U.S. _does_ have quite a lot of history with Alfa Romeo. It was, after all, a Giulia GTA that won the very first Trans-Am race, and the respect Alfa garnered back in the day hasn't worn off if you ask the old heads around here. The problem nowadays is that Alfa Romeo's reputation for......suspect reliability in the U.S. market has gradually worn away at their ability to sell cars here. I'm sure more than a few enthusiasts went and bought Giulia Quadrifoglios, but there is a good reason most of those types just grab M3s or something. This, coming from someone who ADORES the Giulia, even in non-QV form.

    i'm a huge jdm fan and i'm italian but japanese cars here are basically unaffordable unless you have some privileges or you work hard and give everything to cars but for being able to afford a simple S15 you need at least 5-6 years of work with the average salary, counting that the S15 went from 20K in 2018 to 35/40ish K it takes a lot of sacrifices to own one, i still have my first car after many years and i have too choose between owning a house or owning a car

    The situation in Italy is way worse than Larry said "the police seems like doesn't care", the problem is that the police/carabinieri don't know shit about cars, they can see an open hood and check the engine, even if you have a swap with evident parts modified most of the times they can't tell but they'll make sure to give you a ticket on something else that they can be "sure" of not being right.
    I'll explain myself better, in Italy an officer can't issue a ticket on Doubts or because he thinks the car is Suspicious, they have to be SURE that something is wrong, so they write tickets in what they think it's sure isn't right even if the laws makes them legal, a good example are the Strut Bars, that have been made Legal in 2010 if bolted to the stock Coilovers attachment points, (if welded you can get the car impounded), most of the officers don't know this or still think that those are illegal and they're surely going to issue a ticket or worse (funny thing is that you can get tickets or impound removed if you prove to an office called "Motorizzazione" that you're right).
    The bad thing is that those events have been so much common (ticket issued when they shouldn't etc) that a big branch of tuners/car enthusiast, left the scene or stopped modifying cars because they got tired of this bad behaviour from the police officers, because even if you're right you're still losing time to have the tickets remove and etc... so in the end, other than all the things we said the last thing is a big plague.
    Here in Italy, talking about JDM cars there's an iceberg to dive, most of the people that claim themselves JDM Cars Fans in Italy don't know shit about JDMs other than the most famous ones, if you ask one of these what a Verossa is, they wouldn't know😅 this makes the community a Copy/paste of other people builds and a somewhat limited variety of cars at a meet, I've been to JCM (Japanese Cars Meeting) the biggest Jap meet in Italy last year, and the entire parking lot was covered in EK Civics, mostly of them 1.4 D14s straight piped and on some shitty coilovers, yes there were some cool cars and some rare cars but 3/4 out of 90/100...

Low with a subtle rake and Cragars. Under the twee little derrière that makes up the engine lid is a Ported Panda 30 head, blower cam, Volkswagen cylinder barrels, stroker crank, Jahns pistons, Shorrock supercharger, SU carburettor, open headers, lightened flywheel.
