I've heard so many people say, "Well Squire was the only one who was on every album." That may be true, but Jon Anderson's vision made Yes what it was. Squire is the best rock bassist ever, but his songwriting doesn't come close to Anderson's. Steve Howe is my favorite guitarist, but his personality was always off-putting and now he's just a grumpy old man. It's a shame.

    • @playlistmaker90125

Chris’ songwriting doesn’t come close to Anderson’s? Bro Jon wrote LYRICS, LYRICS. Chris wrote MUSIC, alongside Howe/Rabin, White, and Wakeman etc. Besides I think Drama is better than ANYTHING Yes did in the 60s or 70s. Jon’s solo career SUUUUCKS. I’ll take Wolf, Can’t Look Away, and Rio by Trevor Rabin over ANYTHING from Olias Of Sunhillow. What’s your favorite Yes song? I’ll bet you that whatever it is, it was Jon who wrote the lyrics and the others who wrote most of the music…

I was fortunate to be introduced to the magic, mystery, and majesty of yes when I was but 15, back in 1972. This year I turn 65. For me this has been an endless spiritual connection, a continuing journey of self discovery, the "ever opening flower" in my life. Like many, I have never grown weary of exploring the underlying meanings of Jon's lyrics coupled with the minds eye construction of their incredible musical virtuosity.
I'm not at all a religious person, but I could never separate the spiritual aspects of Yes from the songs they have created, nor would I want to.

Jon is my favorite singer since 1973. Yes finished the 2004 35th anniversary World tour; Jon states here that he needed a break, and I don't blame him. However, between January 2005, until his health breakdown in 2008, Jon went on 5 different solo tours: Tour of the Universe, With the school of rock, 2 works in progress tours; I saw Jon in March, 2008 @ the Trockadero, Philadelphia,Pa. Jon did a 3 hour performance with the school of rock, great performance, fun, but the absolute constant discussion was when after four years, will Jon return to YES?!
In fact, when band members were asked when YES were to resume in and around 2007, Steve Howe mentioned that one member was reluctant, postponing the resumotion. Then JON, sadly gets ill. Throughout the initial part of the illness, Jon was listed on the official site as a full member of YES. Even after it was decided that YES embark on a late fall tour in 2008, Jon was still listed as a full member, and Benoit David, was the tour singer, replacement singer. That status changed in 2009.
This whole issue has been real tough as a fan. Now with Chris Squire having moved Onward from this mortal coil June 27th, this series of events with Jon here is less of an impact. No matter what happens to YES in 2016 and beyond, the 45 previous years of YES music in studio and in concert featuring 18 different musicians, was quite the journey!!

Considering Jon got sick & the band felt the need to press on touring may be somewhat understandable, .... but the fact that the band knew Jon was on the verge of death, & didn't even bother to keep in touch w/ him is extremely appalling. After believing for decades that yes was the classiest group of musicians to ever grace the rock stage, .... Boom! ...not so sure about that anymore.
Looks like the ol saying "Things are rarely what they seem" is right on target.

DonTerhune1200cc Well, a similar dynamic appears to be happening with Bill Ward of Black Sabbath. I don't buy either story. It's just not very plausible that it's true. Jon is leaving things out, as he must to bolster his narrative. Fans will believe whatever they want to, because that's just the way things are. That doesn't make it true.

    • @screwyootube1
      @screwyootube1 Před 9 lety +4

+Gordon Freeman As far as I know, Sabbath hasn't told Bill Ward to, (paraphrasing) "Get better, and we'll reunite when you're up to it. Meanwhile, we're moving on..." Ozzy & Co. were right upfront with Bill, and told him they believed he wasn't physically fit to continue on with the band.
Jon was told they would reunite, when he was able. Squire's exact words, "We're not replacing Jon, we're just going to continue touring while he gets better". Then they left him behind for good.

Jon Anderson is the voice & soul of Yes. Any other so called "Yes" band without him is a ludicrous joke. Yes could never be labeled as any specific kind of music genre, with aspects of Rock, Jazz & classical in their songs. They have a sound that's unique and very hard to copy. I think Anderson's songwriting was the KEY to their success. He has often mentioned the spiritual aspect of his music. I had the opportunity to talk to Steve Howe, Keith Emerson & Carl Palmer on a local radio show promoting their tour & I asked them about this "spiritual" aspect. (specifically Howe) Howe threw Anderson under the bus in his response to my question. (he wasn't touring with them) He kind of "pooh-poohed" the spiritual aspect question, but the host made him answer & he claimed HE "didn't think so." I've always considered Howe to be an excellent guitar artist, but this incident & another where I witnessed him screaming at an audience have made me change my sanguine opinion of him. So I moved on quickly with my questions to the other guests. I would have never thought "back in the day" that Emerson, Palmer & Howe would EVER tour together...there I go thinking again! Peace.

I think "Relayer", with Patrick Moraz, is their best album. When Rick returned after that it was a step backward in their progress and they would never regain their momentum after that. As for Jon, there's one Yes album without him that I think is very good, and that's "Drama."

And saying Going for the One is there last great album is almost insane for a Yes Fan.What were they supposed to do record 15 new installments of Close to the Edge.Tormato,Drama, 90125,big Generator and Talk were all fantastic albums each with songs that were or should have been massive hits. The calling in 1994 would have been a number #1 hit if released by U2 or Coldplay. But some fans think Yes should have stopped innovating in 1977.Going for the One was their best album but comeon they could not stay the same.

The chemistry that made yes is now an artificial clone hybrid, without this man the dna of yes is missing a major building block that binds it and makes it resonate. The big heads of these band members think they are like Gods and when the music fame and money becomes more important than the needs of your brother, then you missed the meaning of why you were here in the first place and ironically the name YES which is a positive message suddenly takes on a new meaning in a negative way. All the things they sang about, all the deep thoughts and messages of love from yes are now shadows and faded. Like they really needed the money, the selfishness of this band is a disgrace. But for Jon, yours is no disgrace.

Jon's the real deal, and the most authentic and human member of Yes. He's the central figure in the imagery of light and hope. After him, Wakeman, Rabin, and Bruford are the other nice guys. At the other end are the jerks like Steve Howe and the late Chris Squire, who put the "business" of the band above the people in it. Without Jon's light, and with Howe's death grip, the "band" is comatose.

When Yes first "exchanged" band members, then split into 3 groups, way back when, I was very disappointed. Jon was the one who explained it best when he said "Yes", the band is designed to have different inflections of itself, and the side projects are a way for the 20 or so members to stay creative and if you notice, members have been flowing in and out of the band in a beautiful way. I've heard most of the side projects and liked most of that too. They are musicians who started this entity called Yes and, of course, yes means...anything goes. They put rock music on its own plateau, above prog rock even. C'mon Jon, stay with the program.

I hope Jon reads this comment.
I have this interview of Jon on a DVD. It's a three hour documentary of YES. For a while I felt sorry for Jon and thought YES had treated him shoddily. Then I found out Jon wasd telling lies! The proof is in what Jon was doing. YES were having a rest from the years 2004 to 2008. Jon had been busy doing solo concerts. When YES were ready, Jon had made himself ill. His illness was nothing to do with YES. Later on Jon asked YES who were on tour if they would make an album with him. They couldn't. Did Jon really expect them to drop the tour for him?
Jon also knows the legal restriction of him using the name YES. Jon had lost rights to the name YES when he had left previously. It left Chris with sole rights. In return for Chris' extreme generosity in giving him restricted rights to the name YES, Jon readily agreed to only use the name as a member of YES. It meant not using it with a supergroup. Chris gave Steve and Alan the same rights. It means that whoever of the three would be the last member, they would have sole rights to the name YES. It means if Jon wants to legally use the name YES he must do so in YES with Steve and Alan. Chris as dictator of the conditions said nothing about a a deatrh nullifying the agreement. That was invented by Jon after Chris had passed away to get out of the agreement. Jon forgets what he has said. At different times, it has all been openly declared by Jon himself online.
Jon can consider himself very lucky because Steve and Alan are not planning on taking him to court.
It appears they are treating him as more of a friend than he is in his treatment of them.
If Jon does read this then he needs to reflect on if or not his word has any meaning. Currently it has none.
