Well typical work day for West Coast Cody 2hrs🤷
You don't get where I am by working 2 hours per day,
That is the perfect reply to that statement
Haha! Give it!
Somewhere there is an electrician upset that you tossed the scrap flashing on the ground as trash 😂
As soon as I saw that l knew there is an angry electrician sitting on the edge of his seat ready to pounce on Cody. Probably an east coast sparker
And he did that with a trash can 20ft away, what a power move!
😂😂😂
A barefoot will pick that up later.
One trick I learned this year is to also run butyl tape across tops of stringers to keep moisture from getting between your decking and the stringers and getting trapped there and rotting
11:55 "So... here is our miter"
As a carpenter (of about 14 years) that's a great deal of faith that the deck frame is perfectly square... I've seen plenty of 43.5, 44, 46 degree miters, etc - even on stuff I helped frame! Sometimes it's mistakes, more often I think it's just the nature of trying for perfection in an imperfect world. You can definitely get close, but do enough trim and you'll learn there's basically nothing built PERFECTLY square, level, or plumb - and there never has been.
Always a pleasure. I for one appreciate the “real” world view of how much to expect to get done. CZcams is full of overly edited, make you feel inadequate, 30 minute videos of guys getting a week’s worth of work done… I like some realism.
It took me a month just to build a firewood shed.
Guys and gals, yes, I know what you mean, even though I like ambition strikes it’s a little that way.
The people complaining about "only" getting X amount of work done have never swung a hammer, cut a board, or drilled a hole in their life.
You got that shit right
Tell me about it. My wife watches hgtv and really thinks whole home reno's take 30 days.
But uses a square to make a cut on a miter saw . While framing and that
Plastic decking is HOT when in the sun. As a carpenter, I think cedar is the best if you aren't going to beat on your deck like have tons of stones on your shoes and such. It is naturally rot-resistant, lightweight, and not very dense, so it doesn't hold in the heat. Just my 2 cents, which is probably all it is worth.
Great point!
I had some of the first generation plastic decking at my lake house and man does that stuff get scorching hot during the summer! Had to hose the sucker down before having company over.
Can't stand Trex, and all of the other recycled plastic decking. My current deck is Cumaru. Hard as hell, dense, will out live me, beautiful color, barefoot surface, and a class a fire rating. Ipe and other Brazilian hardwoods are similar in quality.
@wranglerstar love the Old school Champion Auto Parts shirt!!!
Mitre right on the knot with 12” of overhang board still left
Never worry about negative comments. If some / few people don't appreciate your posts then can always switch off and watch whatever - their problem: never make it yours. Thank you for posting! I have just finished an exterior door's architrave all done from scratch based on rough sawn lumber: 3 days in and it will require an extra few hours (4th day). of tweaking so that I am finally satisfied with it... built with time and patience and a source of pleasure ☘
Loved the technique of hand-turning the drill to get the screw below flush.
I'm going to incorporate that. So much care goes into his movements.
lol, looked more like a necessity because the drill was under powered. There is no need for it at all with some trigger control or a clutch that is setup correctly.
@@crapiecornthose m12 Milwaukee's are definitely not underpowered. I have the same ones. He 100% did it like that on purpose
@@johnbrown2030 you have to look a bit closer : czcams.com/video/bP_HPUmpJV4/video.html he pulled the trigger serveral times but the screw is not moving.. even if was on purpose, the plastic housing of a drill is not meant for wrenching on. You 're loading components in way that they are not designed for. So definitely not something you should copy.
I love this style of filming, it helps me unwind and relax. Keep them coming!
Thank you! Will do!
Cody I received my shirt recently and it is very high quality like you mentioned.
I was also very pleased to find a special surprise inside the bag that I almost threw away!
Proho patch is on my edc backpack and the wranglerstar sticker is either going on my live sound mic case or on my video production pelican case
Most of us just enjoy watching you live the life we wish we had. Small plot of land, and the time and resources to learn and build things. Keep making these awesome videos.
The Picture Frame style gives it an extra touch of quality. You will be happy to see it every time you step onto that porch for many years to come. The temporary plywood decking can be a protective covering during construction. Happy VidCon. Cheers.
Always mark your spacer with the side your are using.
That looks good Cody!
I like to put flashing tape on top of my floor joists on a deck, which makes them much more rot-resistant.
💯
If you run your boards wild, you can come back with a track saw and cut the boards to fit the picture frame.
You can use a round over bit on the ends to make a nice smooth finish for your feet.
Also corner edge fastening lets the wood shine and no popped screws as the wood dries.
When you install the square cut ends, router them to match the factory profile. Also, should put rubber flashing on top of joists. Serves two purposes, protects joists from water rotting them and also provides a bit of camo looking from above to not see the joists. Nice cabin, I've always dreamed of one for retirement but now I'm fully set on the barndominium!!
Thank you for the tip, I will do this, can you recommend a product?
@wranglerstar Gracie Vycor comes in a 3 or 6" width for window flashing and we'll just cut into strips for the thinner joists. Also, take that blocking and pitch it slightly down towards the cabin and it'll let water run off. The blocking is thick enough that you'll still have enough nailer even tilted.
Wrap the blocking before you install it too, sorry a lot of details I've gotten in my head!!!
@@jlm08742sounds like experience 😎🙌🏼
I love the fact that you show all of your work.
Don’t change a thing because of what people say!
They are just jealous of you.
❤️🙏❤️
The importance of proper posture while operating a motorized hand drill cannot be overstated, what a display. 👏
Cody is looking fitter and healthier in each video.
Go you Mrs W 😜❤👍👍
Beautiful work!
That cabin is just beautiful Cody, I’m happy for you and all that tender love and care you’re putting into making that just as perfect as you are able to is something that the family will appreciate for forever
Some of us ladies enjoy you prescision of work I woodworked with some disabled men on a program making toys, doll houses, rocking horses, cupboards, repairing, draws for elderly people in unit homes simple things,I went to our local school took a woodwork class in the evenings to learn how to use a router, drills power saws,no funding for this equipment, bought my own,we had a workshop in one town with an instructor 2days 2 days in back of a health center first project was to construct a work bench we bought to our health center and put together before that we had a kitchen table the men were satisfied we could use without worring about any damage the program lasted 6 years.thats why I enjoy watching you build we could only work with pine and plywood. WATCHING FROM AUSTRALIA
Love from Sweden! When I build decks like this I usually put the boards first and then the border. That way I can put the deck down and then take my track saw to cut the deck straight. Then the transition from border to deck looks better in my opinion!
Nothing to say about the content, its superb filming with the slow sliding corners film takes and have a safe trip to LA. I see a significant improvement in filming as always and keep up the good work ;) Much Love
Take your time, this is the kind of content i subscribed for
It is good to see the entire process like this.
The highly edited content out there can give a false impression about how long it takes to do things properly.
Thank you for the good, quality content, and God bless.
The level of care and quality of work you put into things is amazing. Definitely proho and not some fly by night contractor work!
I appreciate your attention to detail and varied content. Watching your videos brings me solace in this crazy world of device content. I see you walking the property and tending to your forest or cutting one board at a time and it makes me long for the simple but meaningful life. Keep up the great content and share your thoughts, concerns and desires!
Better than Discovery Channel!😜
You are doing an amazing job taking time recording and editing any material. Please continue and share with us. We enjoy
Beautiful..... Just beautiful. The cabin, the music, the lanscape, the education. This suburban dweller longs for gor this lifestyle, hopefully sooner than later.
Such a blessing to be able to take your time with a job and do it right! I really enjoyed this video. Thank you!!
You don't want aluminum flashing in contact with any pressure treated lumber including the top of your posts. It will cause the aluminum to corrode and bleed onto your wood.
I am a licensed electrician in Indiana. And I absolutely could watch you work all day. You're professionalism is number one I love it. I love watching you, brother.
Beautiful work so far. Love it a lot.
Whenever I see your side-by-side I have a chuckle because, to me, the rims look like the WS logo. That’s some true style!
I have usually done the frame after the deck boards. I can then use the track saw to cut the deck boards perfectly.
Eye spy a fancy German made carpenter's pencil....quality "marksmanship" there.
It gave you the “fizz” didn’t it. 😃
I ordered one yesterday
I came here to say that😅. I'm ordering a couple now.
God bless
taking your time is the best way to spend your time. keep up the good work. God bless.
I don’t know if it matters, but you can lay your center deck boards down first, then use your track saw to cut off the ends and lay in your picture frame after. It makes it pretty nice.
Your flashing should have included a “drip-edge” in several different locations around your building and deck. I would always use hemmed, drip edges. Much stronger, less chance of destruction and the rounded edges virtually eliminate any chance of someone getting cut in the future. Your flat flashing will just allow water to run down it and onto the wood. Not so good. Even sealers, stains or paint will be affected in the long run. You can get some drip edge flashing made by a local sheet metal shop. Matching color/material as your existing flashing will extend the life of all your exterior wood and minimize upkeep and maintenance. Fantastic cabin, coming along nicely. 👏🙏✌️
You should definitely put another joist under the PT backing you put in. That will prevent any sagging or flexing where your 20’ deck boards butt against your boarder. I really enjoying watching your cozy cabin build. Looking great!👍🏻
I love the content! always a pleasure watching. I couldnt help but notice how you snuck that support for the picture frame in at the end. I knew you did not install it before the flashing. but it looks great!
Love watching your content, it’s good for the soul…
M12 tools are the bees knees
Love it! What a great work station setup!
you are building on one of the coolest things a man can own.. There is NO RUSH here sir. The out sider channel did an amazing cabin and it took him a good long time to get it done. But the out come is BREATH TAKING. The front door alone was a 2 or 3 part video. Love your hard work brother.
Looks great Cody, can't wait to see the railing up. Thanks for the video 👋
Good to see you Cody
You’ve earned the right to take as long as you like to do whatever you like. Good for you I say. Also I like the slow pace makes me feel better about the pace I work 😊
It is coming along nicely. I am really enjoying these building videos.
Run all deck boards a litlle wild, then come back with track saw to clean it up. Then border it. Leaves you with perfect gapping. You're welcome.
There is a jig similar to the Kreg’s. It allows you to space the boards while hiding the screws! Brilliant
I'm a Carpenter by trade and a General Contractor. On all your joists you should add some sort of a deck joist tape to protect the tops of the joists. I tend to use some sort of a thicker tar tape used in window flashing and cover the top of the wood and drape over the edges. (for a 1.5" joist i would cut the tape around 3"). What this does is when you put your decking on top of it, with proper spacing, it makes the top of the joists appear black. this helps make the end product looks nicer as well as help not only protect the surface of the wood but help seal the screw holes of the decking. PLEASE READ!!!
Secondary thought and suggestion I think you would like! For the boards inside the picture frame add the same round over, with a router, as the side lengths of your decking to the cut ends that die into your border (I believe the round-over should be 1/4" or 3/8"). It will take the deck to another level! I also appreciate the consistency of screw spacing throughout. You can have beautiful miters, decking material, and even hidden screw heads with plugs but screw spacing is very important for a quality deck's finish look.
Got it, I'll have to get a router bit,
Watching you build things is therapeutic to say the least!!
Another beautiful day in paradise!
I woke up this morning in northern arizona, chino valley, to the smell of the hot wet pines all around, reminded me exactly of my yesr in washington, almost brought me to tears...
Great job enjoy watching your build from 🇦🇺
Hello cody. I just want you to know that i've been watching your channel since I was a boy. I'm now twenty-eight years old. My mom passed away when I was sixteen, my dad when I was twenty-four. I just want you to know that I've always learned and felt welcome from watching your videos. when I feel stranded as a man, I always know that I have a community That brings me closer to god!!!! From a loyal subscriber out of northern california, Thank you for doing God's work!!!! Thank you for bringing strong men together!!!! I'll keep you and your family and my prayers!!!!
i like the relaxing music you used..... a nice use of a beefy baby light stand for your miter saw helper :)
Proper work takes time. Especially when it’s not something you do everyday
Beautiful work, proho! One literally "magic" thing I've discovered over the years is called copper naphthenate if you're really looking to preserve end cut wood of any kind for many many years. Highly recommend it for situations like you have with the perimeter plywood end cuts where flashing alone will tend to only draw water under by capillary action and trapping it. Copper naphthenate is widely used in the utility pole and commercial fence post industries.
its kinda funny how you used a impact driver to drill your holes and a drill to screw in the screws
Prayers
You are a top mate brother God bless you and keep you safe
Love the music you have using for the build videos!
Stay safe see you next video looking amazing.
Looking great, but, missing something, oh yeah, it's missing some "hand forged by Cody" ironwork. Add a cool look and a personalized touch to boot. From door handles, door knockers, to curtain rods, possibilities are endless. Fire up that forge and let that anvil ring Cody.
Blessings!
The forty-five seconds of piano music were delightful.
Cody I must have been watching you for 10 years, I must say you are aging like a fine wine! I take inspiration from you by slowing down taking your time and doing things right. More than anything I appreciate your faith in the Lord. God bless you and your family. 🙏
I build decks for a living in Nova Scotia (as about as far east as you can get haha) that cedar looks awesome to work with. We install a lot of composite decking and it does not give me the “fizz” Nice miter’s by the way. 👌🏼
I don't understand people who complain about the amount of work is done. This man explaining what he is doing and why. This way everyone who is not proficient in this kind of work can understand it and god help maybe learn something. I really appreciate this kind of videos and enjoy it. Thank you.
Thank you from Denmark 🙂
I am here to watch you cut corners. ❤
Trex gets way too hot it the sun. I used to do Ipe decks around portlandia
If I could work where you are in all that beautiful scenery it would take me much longer.
That beautiful cedar would look really fine if screwed from underneath.
It's also nice to have videos that are a little slower so than your mind can relax
Looking good that’s for sure
I love your content!
we drill holes through the corners of the miters and glue dowels in to keep them level and strong instead of screw or nails
Lovely materials to work with, such good quality timber.
May be get yourself a couple of long wood clamps ?
Love your work, watching the channel. I'd use joist/rim joist flashing on everything. (Flashing roll) It's a cheap way to extend the life of deck. Cheers!
You are a pro with that aluminum floor trim. Thanx
Nice work!
Cody your Craftmanship is Outstanding. Absolutely stunning. Great Job my friend.
You have to be very brave to post a deck build online
Looks like new Milwaukee tools. ❤😂
I enjoy your videos and also a Milwaukee fan!
@@joshuag7604 must be nice. Our government is so messed up!
I like this I’ve done something like that for garden walkways looks cleaner than end grain and where you walk I put aluminium edge to protect it 🙏
I'd watch you drill holes and align boards all day brother. Heck if you make a members-only cement mixing stream I'd join the membership in a heartbeat
It truly amazes me watching him build anything. Just like cutting that backing board and making it fit snug where it literally friction fits.. and he does it quickly. We have seen it unedited before! Dude if I tried that I’d spend like 20 minutes measuring and still completely biff the cuts up and it either wouldn’t fit period or it would be too loose to use. 😂
That content is way better than any Netflix .... out there 😅❤
If you have one, use a screw impact driver to drive in long wood screws. If you don't have one, get one. Makes things a million times simpler. Especially in odd angles.
If you run a hand saw through that not-quite-right miter, it will match perfectly without having to measure. That said, every craftsman does something differently. There's no right or wrong way as long as it's strong and pretty. Thanks for allowing me to pick my nits here. :D
Then the boards will be too short,
@@wranglerstar Not if you reduce the overhang by one kerf width. Your way works just fine, too. And concerning your request: prayer is never a bad idea. Blessings on you and yours.
Pocket screw the miters if possible! They will stay tighter.
To see quality is outstanding. To smell air quality in a forest after a rainstorm is even better! Time and Patience are the greatest warriors!
