I think that Death being a Big Bad Wolf is more in line with classic children's fairy tales...kind of like how the entirety of the Shrek franchise was based. Off of those very same Fairy Tales.

I would say this was a a very interesting take on portraying Death as a character. And he makes for quite the example of a pure antagonist. I don’t like calling this character a villain, that’s Jack Horner, as he isn’t a bad or evil entity. He just is. He wants to teach Puss a lesson and calling his bluff of his ego.

I feel like the reason why Death enjoys his job in the movie, but still decides to stop the hunt once Puss realizes the value of his life, is because his joy is less in his job, and more in him taking down people who don't fear him, and don't value their lives specifically. Basically, it's like the same feeling as when you one-up an arrogant a-hole. And Puss realizing the value in life means that he isn't arrogant anymore, at least not in that aspect. So there's no satisfaction.

The Hellhound is actually a very common mythological theme throughout the whole Europe. Sometimes it appears as a dog and sometimes as a wolf and sometimes as a hound, but in all versions it is a canine. For example, the moors of England are famous for legends of wandering black hounds with red eyes and a monstrous physique and folklore says that these hounds predicts/foretell death or some other evil. In Finland, the equivalent is known as Hiiden Hurtta ("hound of Hiisi") or alternatively Manalan Rakki ("mongrel of Manala") or Surma (literally "death") or Kalma (another word for "death"), and it has been a feared bringer of death in folklore. In Scandinavia, the corresponding hound is the wolf demon Garm.

Its easy to gush about the Death Wolf now in retrospect, but its so hard to put into words the effect this huge tonal shift in the first 15 minutes of the movie had on unsuspecting viewers like myself. All I can really do to adequately describe it is that I imagine THIS is how audiences must have felt watching Janet Leigh get knifed and murdered in the first 30 minutes of Psycho or watching Drew Barrymore get killed off in the first ten minutes of Scream. It was THAT kind of a rude awakening

Death Lobo is an amazing character. He's also very persistent in his goal of going after Puss that he doesn't really chase him but follows at his own leisurely pace behind only catching up when Puss has been at one place to long. Lobo didn't go after Puss when he stayed with the Crazy Cat Lady cause he knew that life with her would be terrible for Puss as the cat loves being in dangerous situations, the CCLs home may be safe but it's so boring to Puss that he mentally suffers from living there.

I guess you could argue he is more prone to getting killed bc of his arrogance, but tbh, it doesn’t make sense that death would be “chasing after him” since his attitude didn’t change his physical state throughout the story.
If death was killing him just bc he was arrogant, then that ain’t him being loyal to his code of not coming for you till your time comes.

In regards to versions of Death personified as wolves, or at least dogs, there is also the myth of Hellhounds in Europe and... Appalachia apparently? Which are often seen as omens of Death, or if you look into its eyes three times it kills you or whatever, y'know, Black Shuck and myths like that.
Which might also come from similar origins to the Gwyllgi(took forever to figure out how to spell that), which you mentioned in this video, though for the life of me I can't find out more about them from the quick google searches I'm doing, but they are pretty similar with the red eyes, black fur, all that.
I could also argue that the Beast of Gévaudan from France also has pretty strong links to death, though it's also helped by the fact that out of more modern(depending on how you view it) mythological creatures it has easily the highest human body count.
Though, I don't know if people consider cryptids, like the Hellhounds or the Beast of Gévaudan are often considered as, to be part of folklore or mythological creatures, but I personally view them as the same.
Edit: And also in the Beast of Gévaudan's case, it's unclear what it's supposed to be, but it's often described as a wolf like creature... And in reality it was likely just a wolf, or pack of wolves.

Personaly my opinion on Death being a villian in a movie is pretty simple. I like both interpetations when they serve the movie well.
Charachers like Litch king are death and evil personofied in one and they are great.
Some media even subverts the idea of death being a person like in the Castlevania cartoon.
Death is an abstract concept so obviously people will see it different. That is why I love Death as a person trope

  • @RossPitSharkHunter
    @RossPitSharkHunter Před rokem +3

I love how this film makes the character of Death value life, while ALSO keeping him an antagonist. Most depictions of Death will only keep one or the other(at least from what I've seen in the western world, I have very little knowledge about other parts of the world regarding this subject). If Death personified is an antagonist they'll hate life and want to kill as many people as possible, or something. If Death is nicer or a protagonist it'll often depict them as caring deeply about life, or learning the value of life.
Of course there are other depictions that don't fall into those camps, like versions of Death just doing their job, or versions that are more just a concept with a character design and no personality(which honestly works better on Death than any other character in history that I can think of). And of course there are also allegories to Death without it being an actual character, monsters, forces of destriction, yadda yadda, but I'm of course mainly talking about characters who identify themselves as Death.

Doubt this will be seen by many, but this has inspired me to share a few of my favourite anthropomorphic personifications of Death in various media.
First off, DEATH from the Discworld novels, if my use of Anthropomorphic Personification didn't already give it away. The Reaper as depicted by Terry Pratchett (may he rest in peace) was, and possibly still is, one of the best. He's cold, but not heartless. Has a sense of duty, but also tries to show humour at times. He has some very human attachments, such as his living horse, assistant, granddaughter, and even Death of Rats. THE FACT HE TALKS IN ALL CAPS AND WITHOUT QUOTATION MARKS MAKES HIS SPEECH STAND OUT, as befitting such a fundamental force. He, ultimately, treats everyone fairly and equally, regardless of who they are or what they've done.
Second is The Raven Queen, from the world of Exandria of Critical Role, The Legend Of Vox Machina, and Explorer's Guide To Wildemount. The mysterious air about her, the whole raven aesthetic, and the masked visage of her depictions all create a sense of unknowable determination that gets me hooked. And like all good depictions of Death, she is officially Lawful Neutral. She does not choose sides between Good and Evil, merely existence.
Third, Hades from Spiritfarer (very highly recommend this game by the way). I'll try not to spoil too much of the plot, but Hades appears as a toweringly tall owl made out of clouds. He is imposing, deliberate, and undeniable. He cannot be fought or deterred, yet he is in no rush. There's a certain patience to him. You know he's always there, just beyond where you can see, simply waiting for his time.
Finally, a version of Death potrayed by the TikToker, FlickerSpark. Not much to say other than fun. Not malicious or cold at all. Simply an immortal being that meets with people when they die and has a blast doing so. Except, possibly, when too many Karens have gotten involved close together.

I am so happy they toke death serious. Yes it is a funny movie but it is also a intense, dramatic thrilling ride of a movie too filled with emotions. And Death was not ridiculed for the sake of the plot or to make Puss look good. They respected death, the audience and the characters in the movie. I am so happy Dream Works can do this. I mean since Kung Fu Panda 2 and How to Train your Dragon I saw potential in them making more serious animated movies at the same time making Trolls and Boss Baby I will not deny people that. Only hot take I will give is.... I thought the story in "Bad guys" was just okay, more leaning towards goofy then emotional. But the style was great and this one even greater.

One of the very few movies that deserves that pg rating and it isn't played off in one scene either. I have a disabled brother who is mentally is 5 and he gets upset at scenes like this because one cant understand why death is after Puss. And is like that with young children. Sure it's a movie about a cat but there's so much behind the movie that the adults can enjoy. We dont ever get that in a film like that today. Even the r rated movies where they hardly show death like that. Death here is straight up scary and you actually experience what Puss is feeling and that's hard to do.

I don't truly believe that Death _enjoys_ making his "victims" (idk what else to call them) afraid, or that he likes killing/reaping the souls of living things. Rather, in the context of the movie, he _does_ enjoy instilling fear in the people/creatures who, like Puss, take their life for granted or believe they are immortal, untouchable beings who have no fear of death.
Death himself explains to Puss that the only reason he even went out of his way of pursuing Puss, was (besides have 9 lives, which is fair, but it also plays into the main theme) because Puss didn't _value living a truly fulfilling life,_ which was made worse by the fact that because, as a cat, he had 8 lives to spare, which mean there was no real fear of finality. Until he's down to his last life.
I think Death liked chasing Puss and scaring him, because in his eyes, he was proving to Puss that he wasn't, in his words, "an arrogant little legend, who thought he was immortal."

I think the movie is great because it has three antagonistic factions to the main character that embody very different types of struggle.
You have Death, who is playing a role of Mentor towards Puss, teaching him through trial of fire about the value of his last life. But you also have Jack Horner, who embraces villainy to the most extreme extent, and Goldilocks, who is after the main characters because she has a desire to fulfill.
The difference between Antagonists, and the difference between the outcomes of each antagonist makes the movie for me.
Like I said, to me Death is not even a villain, if Death had wanted to, Puss would have died 20 minutes into the movie, but that was not Death's goal, it was to make him understand that his last life is valuable so he would make the most of it.

    • @ryanhoule4415
      @ryanhoule4415 Před rokem

Feels more like they embody three prominent antagonist archetypes: you have Jack Horner as the pure evil selfish man-child, he has everything anyone could ask for but he still desires more to the point of taking magic away from everyone else and hoarding it for himself. Goldilocks and the Three Bears are the sympathetic villains who are open to redemption as they are not really malicious and do have understandable motives. Death is really less of a villain and more a force of nature as what is good and bad is typically determined by societal norms and values and that just doesn’t apply to him, all is fair to him regardless of moral opinions.

I was terrified for Puss; even though he hardly shows up in the movie, every time I heard the whistle I was brought back to that first moment, and I'd be just as terrified as Puss every single time. Jackal, and he was the world of Death Rituals, not of Death itself, the closest to a god of Death would be Osiris, who would judge you after your passing.

@@613-shadow9 He was not killed because killing death in a movie that tries to be mature about the topic would be extremly childish.
Puss killing or just defeating death would be the same as him actualy getting infinite lives. It would show he did not change, he did not learn to not waste his life and that death waits for no one.
That is why in the Adventure time they never really killed the Litch king. He is death of all. The great end. He was always here, he is always here, he will be always be here.
