- On this series of "The Teachings of a Rōnin" I talk over the evolution of Mix Martial Arts (MMA) and how the Special Operations community had adapted MMA into their combative training program. Hear the hard lessons learned from employing traditional MMA into combat. In this video, I’ve discussed my personal journey into the martial arts and why I choose different forms and styles to enhance my abilities as a Special Forces soldier. “I am not interested in learning how to tap or choke an opponent out. There are no do overs, point system, rules or referees in combat. It is important to understand this mindset, the situation and environment.”
Tu Lam (Retired U.S. Army Special Forces- Green Beret) -23 Years Full Spectrum Warfare, U.S. Army Special Operations worked throughout 27 countries worldwide. Team-Leader assignments in Unconventional Warfare, Foreign Internal Defense, Special Reconnaissance, Hostage Rescue, Direct Action and Counter-Terrorism Operations in permissive and non-permissive environments. Composite Special Forces team training and development team leader. Founder/CEO and Director of Training and Research Development for Rōnin Tactics Inc.

Shaun he's part of da familla
Please have Tu on the show!

Tu is a legitimate Scholar of combat. I still can't believe he's generous enough to just give this information away for free.
You need to study Bushindo if you’re wondering why he does this for free.

@@adrienne4213 I didn’t want to edit it lol.
Ten year SOF vet with experience in multiple martial arts. Definitely agree with all of this. Combat is completely different than more controlled environments
I trained my entire life in many arts along with western boxing. I am a Marine and also a blue belt in jiujitsu. I’ve actually worried about what you pointed out but never thought of my knife being taken off me rather I’ve been concerned that while grappling an enemy could easily pull a knife and stab. Thank you for giving us your experience and thank you for your service.
You sometimes see footage of civilian open carriers being victimized with their own handguns because they failed to be aware of who is around them and they did not carry in a retention holster. A predator simply snatched their firearm off their hip and either shot them immediately or held them with their own weapon and got their wallet.
@@connorperrett9559 please share a link. I've been unable to find such videos.
I've only found videos of cops being disarmed and shot by their own service pistol.
@@SoldierAndrewlook on active self protection. There is plenty of them. Two of the recent ones were at gas stations.
Interesting to hear about a troops weapons being taken off their kit and used on them. I'm just a dirty filthy nasty guard. Our "combatives" training never talks about that, is exactly what you say "position before submission".
Great lesson in this vid
You were born to teach these things. Thank you for explaining them in a way in which a regular man like me can grasp the concepts.
Agree with you. Also very well balanced. He's not slamming something and praising something else. Lot of nuance on what works as a civilian (relatively unarmed, facing untrained combatants, not wanting to kill) vs. a soldier (armed, facing combatants with killing intent, and having to kill). Very nice video.
Been waiting for a new video. This man is legendary
Ya. The legend of the GB who shot himself in the foot
@@cameronmyers4143 only person I've seen video proof of shooting themselves in the foot was a big ass dude doing a bullshit class in a middle school. Pretty sure he also worked for atf. To his credit he took it like a champ
Make a video about maybe a nutrition? And gym training. What sessions do you use, what you eat daily ? Maybe even a video like day routine or something like that ?
A street fight is about weapons....finally someone speaks the truth!!! The dominant position is on your feet not balled up on the ground ...again speaking the truth!!! Excellent video and subject!!!
The most legit person, no bs, straight to the point!
Thank you so much, Shifu Ronin!
Please make more videos.

I love the way Tu explains and speaks. definitely one of the reasons i watch all of his videos.
About time I add you to my training bucket list
Definitely worth it
Yes, do so. I haven't attended one of his firearms classes but his knife combat course was excellent.
Thankyou for your service and dedication.

Incredible. This is what I’ve been hoping and waiting for. Keep them coming.
I’m so happy to see fresh ronin content
Tu looks like he should be fighting dwayne Johnson in the FF series.

Thankful for people like you. You and people alike humble the rest of us through your daily actions. We look up to those people to be better people ourselves. You are an example of what I myself strive to be. I've got a long way to go.. but I work on it. I love the opportunity to learn more everyday.
I like to hear your insight on training cause coming from somebody who had as much training as you means a lot to us who have had none
Just thankful you're on our side.
Ronin thank you so much for your service. You inspired me since I subscribed on your page and I saw the first video I have to thank you for everything I learned from you and I have to say it now days I wake up and all can think is in surviving thru the day thanks to you. I would like to go to a training class one day with you as a civilian and with no military experience but I follow a military discipline on my life. Thank you so much for everything you done and you keep doing to teach us everyday.

When Tu's mom gave birth to Tu, she asked the Doctor what gender the baby was. The Doctor said it's a MAN.

Thank you for sharing your life story. You've really just about done it all!
You're my hero in a lot of ways. So thankful to discover your channel.
True legend keep kicking ass out there !!!
I love this channel , I used to pride myself in ,"survival, shooting skills, prepping...etc etc" until I came across him and realized I ain't shit literally it knocked me down a couple notches . To get this kind of mindset and battleworn skills is very hard to come by and he's taught me so much . I love these videos , if you truly take and apply these things to your life and situations it works , it's not just a physical readiness, or skill readiness it's the mindset that is the most important part you can be tough , you can be smart , you can be both those things but if your mental state isn't top knotch none of that shit matters . I'm far from where I wanna be or need to be but the most important thing is that I notice I'm not. Thanks for all of these videos if you were close id be trying to take your classes
I always love your videos. You have a good ability to streamline the information you're trying to give. A talent lost on many. As a kid before the marines I also trained in pencak silat techniques to add to my may thai and traditional wrestling. The theory behind it has helped me learn things from other arts and even doing my job a diver in the oil. Maximizing leverage, minimizing your movement and redirecting energy. Which from person to person will vary, especially when you consider age, what you're wearing and potential limits due to injury
Yet another extremely informative video. Very straightforward and honest assessment of what to look for in learning fighting systems. Simply outstanding. Job well done.
I 100% agree with Tu’s philosophy of practicing different styles to develop well rounded skills, as there is no perfect martial art. 🙏🏻
Thank you for this presentation. I like the mixed style approach. No one perfect form out there, except the one that produces peace instead.
thanks for sharing, Tu!
I love all of your work sir thank you
It was very interesting to hear why you pick certain martial arts over others.Great video as always take care.
Thanks again sir great video. Keep em coming.

I love this series!
You're an inspiration Mr. Lam! Good days to you sir!
Outstanding! Life in every breath. 🤚🏾🤛🏾
I agree with this practical approach and the theory. Thank You
This is good training. Thank you Tu.
This channel is pure gold! So much good info by a true warrior. I was in special forces in my country too, and I came to the same conclussions as you regarding how can MMA be adapted for combat. I do MMA, but tactical/combat is another thing definitely, so I think it needs modifications. For example, sometimes I come to use techniques of the old Japanese jujutsu -which may be obsolete in MMA, in combination with Filipino Knife techniques. Here we are talking about a different breed of MMA, Combat MMA, the art of deploying the elements of martial arts needed for a specific situation for combat. Clearly, this field has still a lot to explore. Thank you sir for sharing your knowledge.
Always looking forward to see new videos. Thank you for your Service and then years you served keeping USA safe. God bless you and again Thank You.
Also great, to see Tu smile more
Thanks for all the Info you gave your community!

It's awesome to hear about the evolution of a topic I had so many questions about. Thanks for the great lesson!
Great Video, I understand the Reasoning behind all the integration of different martial arts into your style. Fascinating. Thanks Tu! I learn a lot in every vid, I wish one day I could get to one of your trainings.
Ronin Sir, I love this video.
Great job, your opinion is spot on, obviously lol. If you don’t mind me mentioning, I think Shim Shin-Do is of worth. SSD saved my life a few times against two knife attacks and several multiple assailant altercations. When living in impoverished neighborhoods people getting jumped is an everyday occurrence. SSD really provides a one stop shop for civilian street survival.
Great video Tu! Very informative, and it added another dimension to my training theory. Life in every breath bruh indeed!
Thank you for insights into the basic art of warfare. Thank you. This is the second video I have had audio issues with. Thank God no commercials interrupted because I always use head phones and I would have probably lost what little hearing I have left.
Thx Tu!

I was trained as a bodyguard where I met several members of the United States military, many of whom were what I believe were US Special Forces and Army Rangers, and most of them shared your sentiments, and not all of them were Filipino-American - some were white, so it wasn't a cultural bias.
In my wrestling days I also got to spar with BJJ practitioners who were from the US Navy and I found that even within the context of sport grappling, FMA did it a lot better.
I study BJJ these days mostly so I know how to counter them, but I find Kali, Silat, and Systema far more reliable in sparring, and would prefer them in real life.
