      I would neither call it a good or challenging fight... Her moveset was just copy & pasted from Maria of the Astral Clocktower, making it little more than a reskinned boss, ergo easy to beat if you had played Bloodborne. Speaking of reskinning, her whole aesthetic too was just taken from Priscilla.

      @baileydunn7653 Před 7 lety +41

      I mean you're not wrong, but her aesthetic has to be reminiscent of Priscilla because of her character, I mean would you rather fight a reskinned boss that looks like priscilla or some strange Russian crow who's into BDSM and bashes you with a bowl of soup

    I realized something watching this video. I realized that my enjoyment of the buried story that lies within these games comes almost exclusively from watching Vaati's videos.
    I realized this when he mentioned the bell, and that Wilhelm finds it strange you arrived without it's tolling. Then he mentions the bell lies buried in the snow, and that Elfriede may have had something to do with it.
    I would never have made that connection on my own, but knowing it makes the world of the game so much richer, which makes me enjoy the game so much more.
    You have a gift for telling stories, Vaati, and thank you for giving me so much more enjoyment from a game I already loved so much.

      What if the Lord Shards in Dark Souls 1 are actually the fragmented Dark Soul.The Wiki says otherwise but if you think about it, it does explain a lot.
      1.)The Four Kings are in the Abyss which is related to the Dark Soul.
      2.) It explains the whole undead curse thing. The Lords Souls aren't meant to be fragmented
      3.) Gwyn would never give a piece of his ''holy" soul to anyone, especially a Dragon(beings who he despise) or humans(a race who he think is profane).
      4.)Maybe what we call Humanity, are just smaller fragments of the Dark Soul.
      5.) How the heck would Gwyn be able to fuel the flame with his already fragmented Soul.
      6.)For Gwyn soul, it says that he bequeath some of his "power" ,not pieces of the soul itself, to other "Gods"(not depraved dragon and four evil human kings). Notice how all non Lord Soul bosses have there own complete soul despite them all being tied to one of the four lord souls.Maybe whoever controls the Lord Soul can distribute the power of that soul to his or her underlings. Maybe everyone was given a soul(that are tied to one of the lord souls) that could receive power(aka souls) from one of the four Lord Souls.
      7.) Gywn's Soul is still whole.
      8.) The furtive pygmy is dead, so the Dark Soul has to be somewhere.

    So, here's my take. When she was still living, Elfriede attempted to usurp the flame, but she was defeated by the Soul of Cinder (or, depending on how old she and her sisters actually are, by one of the previous lords of fire) and was turned to ash. Eventually she returned as unkindled ash, and just as you (the ashen one) lost a great deal of who she once was. Once, she was the great Elfriede, but now, she is simply Friede, a shell of her former self. In this state of depression and emptiness, she found her way to the land of the forlorn, the Painted World of Ariandel. Here, Friede found a place she felt she belonged, and so, she made it her home.
    Before her attempt to usurp the fire, Elfriede dismissed her most faithful companion, Sir Vilhelm (presumably to protect him), gifting him that Onyx Blade as a symbol of her favor. I can only assume that Vilhelm stayed out of her conflict with the Soul of Cinder (or whomever controlled the fire at the time) out of respect for her wishes. When she returned as Friede, the unkindled ash, Vilhelm found her and stayed by her side as she traveled to Ariandel'e painted world, his loyalty to her having never faded. But here's the hearted breaking part...she doesn't remember him. After returning, Friede lost most if who she was, including most (if not all) of her memories of Vilhelm. Thats why he waits outside the church, why he still calls her Lady Elfriede, and why she never acknowledges his death after you defeat him. While his love and loyalty to her never faltered, he means little more to her than his value as a servant, especially after finding the painted world and creating a new life there.
    Thoughts?

    i find it interesting that the only soulsborne protagonist with the power to actually change anything is the guy who's literally too weak to even be functional kindling for a fire.
    this is a guy too shit to even be a useful meat shield, and he's the only one to ever alter or end a cycle. i enjoy that duality.

    • @mechagreat9105
      @mechagreat9105 Před 7 lety +12

      Yal Rathol well not really, your right bit also wrong. the curse was made by nature or the cycle in a way to end the age of fire, gave humanity the means to power but they had to find it and the drive to achieve it, they aren't exactly weak

    • @Yal_Rathol
      @Yal_Rathol Před 7 lety +80

      MechaGreat the cycle of light and dark happened because of gwyn. the undead curse and the cycle are a perversion of the natural order, it's just that nobody could figure out how to break free, until aldia. aldia and vendrick knew how to break the cycle, they were just too late and never got the word out. then you stumbled across the solution by accident.
      and not humans being weak, that's not what i said. the good hunter of bloodborne is a human, and they slay gods in their off-hours for fun. no, UNKINDLED are weak. they are people who tried to set themselves on fire _and failed because they don't have enough stuff to burn_. the weakest of the soulsborne protagonists (the good hunter, the chosen undead and the bearer of the curse are all significantly more powerful than the unkindled) is the only one to break or alter the cycle.

    • @mechagreat9105
      @mechagreat9105 Před 7 lety +7

      Yal Rathol sort of wrong again. Evidence sort of shows the cycle was a thing before, first age of ancients, than of fire which would've been followed by age of man but gwyn resisted thus the curse arose to give man a chance to fight for there age

    • @mechagreat9105
      @mechagreat9105 Před 7 lety +14

      Yal Rathol And the unkindled are weak, if anything they just weren't strong enough, that doesn't mean they were weak. the flame requiered greater and greater force each time.

    • @Yal_Rathol
      @Yal_Rathol Před 7 lety +50

      MechaGreat ....the age of ancients was timeless and eternal. there is no "before" the age of ancients.
      the age of fire happened spontaneously. the first flame just appeared.
      the first flame should've died, creating an age of man. gwyn got scared and burned himself, extending the age of fire and creating the undead curse.
      now, the world is trapped in the cycle of fire and dark, unable to move on because of gwyn.
      this is information provided by aldia and the first game. where am i wrong? and more to the point, where am i wrong in saying that the unkindled is the weakest soulsborne protagonist?

    Re: Vilhelm, the sword explicitly says he was relieved from Elfriede's service. I think it's more likely that while he no longer officially serves her (which is why she never acknowledges his presence, even after you kill him), he still follows her around like a spurned puppy and attempts to eliminate threats to her. It may even be that she forced him to leave her service, once she decided upon this path, hoping that he could be happy within the Church (turns out he wasn't; he showed up in the painting, after all).

    I'd still rather see more about the Profaned Capital and its namesake flame. We know almost nothing about that area, and it plays a very big part of the story. AoA gave us a reasonable amount of extra info about the Sable Church and Pontiff Sulyvahn, possibly enough to get a decent idea of the early history in Anor Londo, but we need to know what drove Pontiff Sulyvahn to do what he did.
    Furthermore, it'd be awesome to see the DLC's compound with each other. The Profaned Flame is often associated with the Dark Soul, so perhaps we'll continue the story of Aria and Gael there. Maybe even Liliane might show up in search of it too, and it would give us a much better narrative than just going back to Londor, which is probably just New Londo.

      The Eleonora says the oracles of the Profaned Capitol are relatives of a "Certain oracle" (the only other oracle being the Daughter of the Abyss, Alsanna). My theory is that the Profaned Flame is the remnant of the Old Chaos that has been tainted by the Dark/Abyss after centuries of Alsanna praying over the Old Chaos in Eleum Loyce. (the Profaned Flame is tied to the Dark according to some item or spell descriptions).

    • @scott_chocolate
      @scott_chocolate Před 7 lety +6

      I have a theory for Pontiff Sulyvahn's motivations, but this theory requires buy-in on the identity and history of Velka. So, I'll start with my Velka theory:
      Velka's full name is Velka Darkmoon the Goddess of Sin. Thusly named because she (as The Ashen Hollow theorizes) is the original heir of the Dark Soul, the Furtive Pygmy. She is the goddess who originally created the Blades of the Darkmoon. A covenant which she named after herself before her son Gwyndolin assumed command and she vanished from Anor Londo. Gwyn is the father of the Firstborn, Gwynevere, and Gwyndolin, however the Firstborn and Gwynevere have a different mother than Gwyndolin (possibly the goddess Fina). The Dark Sun Gwyndolin is thus named after his Father (Lord of Sunlight) and his mother (Darkmoon). Gwyn sacrifices himself to link the flame before Gwyndolin is old enough to ever know his father (see Hawkshaw’s amazing timeline video). Velka remains in Anor Londo long enough to raise Gwyndolin as a daughter.
      Some supporting evidence:
      -- Velka is described as a witch and possessing a great deal of influence as far as gods are concerned (Vow of Silence) -- Gywndolin's magic is strengthened by Darkmoon power and he was raised as a girl due to his affinity with the moon (Crown of the Dark Sun and Moonlight Robe)
      -- Velka’s pardoner’s and Blades of the Darkmoon use Velka’s Book of the Guilty.
      -- Velka’s pardoner, Oswald of Carim, stands in the bell tower in a pose that the player never acquires. (He does teach the player the gesture "Well! What is it?" that is slightly similar to his idle pose, but is an entirely different pose and motion.) Velka’s statue in DS3 is doing the very same pose as Oswald in DS1 with only one arm as her other arm is busy holding her book (of the guilty presumably). We have no way of knowing what the name or purpose of this pose is… But, it looks just like an inverse Praise the Sun to me. I’d call it Praise the Darkmoon.
      -- Yorshka says the Blades of the Darkmoon were led by Gwyndolin. She does not say they were created by him. She also says that she inherited leadership from him which could imply that he was only Captain of the knights.

I also personally found the story of bloodborne more compelling and it's a shame we won't be getting more lore from it from him but I guess I can't expect everybody to love things as much as I do haha. If you're interested, maybe check out Jerk Sans Frontieres! I think that in an one last act of despair, the Father consumed and twist the fire he protect so he could pass it on to Friede preventing its alight and reviving her. Usurping the flame in a way, that is why the flame turns black, cus it was supposed to consume the Father and the painting not be consumed. That what he means by saying "Thou'rt Ash, and flame befits thee, of course..." he twist the prophecy trying to contain the flame to alight on the world, and letting it alight Friede instead. But you kill her and liberate the flame. What is a great parallel to the usurping of the flame in the outside world, and her own relationship whit the Church. That is the way a see it.

    I do think the idea of Londor being the final DLC is probably pretty likely.
    After all, Uncle Gael needs to bring Adorable Painting Girl the pigment for her painting. The Dark Soul of Man. And where better to find men than in Londor. Land of hollows. I mean, I guess we have our own Waifu of Dark, Karla, but I don't see her getting much use in a DLC when she's a permanent addition to our base of operations. So I feel it's more likely we're going to classic Dark Soul territory, where the Beef Jerky roams wild and free.

      DLC2 is going to be the last segment of the Dark Souls story from what the creator has said. While those mildly interesting points could be expanded, Dark Souls doesn't answer all the questions you have. Ever. It seems far more likely that they would chose to end Dark Souls where it started, in a place with some meaning like Londor, instead of wasting the last bit of Dark Souls story to explain some low-level shit like where the Profane Flame came from.

    Such is the conceit of the self-proclaimed seeker of truth.
    But in the end, you lack the stomach.
    For the agony you'll bring upon yourself"
    That's just Miyazaki DIRECTLY telling everyone "Stop with the lore analysis. Stop going through every single little detail. You won't uncover anything. I left it as vague as possible. You're only wasting time. And if you uncover anything, or come up with a theory. You'll think 'that's it?' And then everything will be ruined for you."
    And that is awesome.

    In Irish mythology one of the oldest deity is called Dagda ("Good Father"). He's a god of fertility and one of his attributes is bottomless cauldron. Although Dagda is one of most powerful and potent deities in Irish pantheon, he is often depicted as clumsy and overgrown. Just saying :)

    I just read the description and I'm sorry to hear there wasn't much enjoyment in making the DLC videos.

    What if they make a spinoff game that takes place only in a painted world that isn't considered dark souls?

    Your voice is truly soothing. Also, amazing content, thank you. I didn't even finish one soulslike game but I absolutely adore learning about lore, it's not so spoilerish for me as I will probably not finish any of DS games... Well, maybe you just inspired me to start again with DS1 remastered. ;) Those vids are perfect, gloomy atmosphere, tone of voice I have already mentioned and bliss of swimming deep in pure sweet information. Thank you!
