  • The Coast to Coast is a very popular and famous Cycle route throughout the year, but is primarily and at it's heart a Road Cycling route when mentioned to most folk.
    Tim Woodcock devised a primarily off-road Mountain Bike route from Wainrights walking trail which takes in some simply breathtaking scenery and amazing climbs and descents as featured many years ago in MBR Magazine. I was blown away over the whole 6 days, as well as blowing out of my ar$e despite being on an eBike. I was expecting this to be a fairly easy route, but I was wrong.
    The route we rode starts in St.Bees and ends some 225miles later in Robin Hoods bay. We did this 'assisted' using a tour company over 6 days which even on an eBike was a great challenge mentally and physically.
    We all had 700wh batteries on our Specialized Turbo Levo 2019 bikes. I would not say this would be feasible on a 500wh battery unless your super good at battery management or have another battery or plan on stopping enroute to charge. There are plenty of places to do this, it will just take some planning and a lot longer.
    This video is a VLOG of Day 1 of our adventure which took us from St.Bees to Eskdale. The tour company couldn't get to us on day one due to logistics so we had to carry our overnight gear with us which meant I couldn't take the drone but it was with me for the rest of the trip. In our bags of course we needed our chargers and overnight kit but none-the-less it was a great days riding. Of course, we smashed the first 19 miles in no time as it was mostly fire roads, but the climb up Black Sail Pass is a bridleway, but rideable by horse, cart or ebike!! So it was a Hike-a-bike for us..

    Very scenic ride and nice to see so many Levos (same as my Expert green) That ride got very interesting at 7:00 when you guys started hike-a-biking up that steep slope. I would find it more brutal to carry the bike than use walk mode. I realize some parts were very steep and maybe a carry is the only way. An alternative way I travel off trail is to flip the bike upside down and walk it like a wheel barrow in front of myself while holding the handle bars. That rocky descent was crazy rough. You were lucky on your crash into the the rocks at 13:41 It looked like you were going face first into the rock! I always wear a full face helmet and chin mount-- much safer for your jaw. Your buddy in front caught some nice air at 15:20 Thanks for recognizing me on the live stream with Rob today (Feb. 5, 2020). I was surprised you knew who I was and you saw my 1500 mile review of my 2019 Levo Expert.

      Yes mate do for sure. What I love about an eBike is it gets you outside your comfort zone and into areas you wouldn't normally venture, so for me it's about adventure..I never would have considered this ride on a normal pedal bike..

    Excellent video I live locally and knew what was to come when you were taking a break at Black Sail hut! The road version of the C2C passes my house and I'm bemused by the number of folk doing it on conventional mountain bikes which are hard work on tarmac especially the brutal second day. Looking forward to episode 2.

    • @TheBikePilot
      @TheBikePilot  Před 5 lety

      Yes the road riding was so hard, harder than being on a trail and there is around 30% of this I would say. I didn't enjoy the road riding to be honest..
      I wasn't prepared for that push up at Black Sail pass at all..But it was a great challenge and enjoyed it a lot..

    Superb video John, had the bug for getting a emtb now for about two months......definitely gonna get one but we are at that time of year now where next years models are beginning to show so I'll most probably wait till September now before I get one. Had a giant trance on demo for nearly two weeks and loved it I'll be 54 later this month and not having cycled properly in years and really let my fitness go I thought I'd give them a try. I was massively surprised by how easy you could get Up even the steepest of hills it was great, anybody who thinks you are not getting a good workout is totally wrong. Put it this way I pedalled non stop for over 4 hours on one trip so no matter how much assist you are getting you are still getting a good workout and without being knackered at the end of it........Whatever exercise you end up getting it will be more than staying on your couch. Looking forward to part 2 😀😎😄👍👌👌

      Not a huge deal, the Brose motor is certainly, for me, the best on the market and the frame geo works well for me. Plus I get excellent dealer support from Berkshire Cycles. I haven't tried the Jam but that's supposed to be a great bike and no doubt there will be some good deals out there with the new motor coming out..!

    Great video, looks like good fun doing it with mates, I finished this route yesterday. Was awesome fun and weather but you look like you are much better prepped. If you find some Specialized sunglasses that I lost on the way up to Tan Hill from Winton then make good use of them :D. Plus if you can work out which way the bridleway is supposed to go both prior to the river Belah crossing and then up the bog fest to the top then you did better than me. Good luck lads.

    Excellent vlog that is my kind of ride great trail planning. Just out of curiosity when you had to carry your bikes was that a footpath you had to follow for that part or still hell of a bridleway. Look forward to next episode.

    • @TheBikePilot
      @TheBikePilot  Před 5 lety +2

      It's the Black Sail Pass which is a 'Bridleway' but not really passable for a Ponie or a Bike!! From the bottom section of the trail after the Youth Hostel it was pretty much a push up all the way up the Mountain to the ridgeline. If it wasn't too steep, it was boggy/rocky. The mileage on that day looked light on paper but this was the challenge on that day and it was pretty arduos as the vid shows, I hope!! There's quite a lot of boggy field crossings throughout the route. It's a 'proper' mountain bike ride in so much as you go right up and down a mountain via walking trails and are treated to truly epic views..Also, the GPX files on other days are not 100% accurate we did take a couple of wrong turns and ended up the wrong side of a field boundary as always with these things but if you pull it into Google Earth or any other mapping software you could see where we went wrong.. Next episode should drop before the end of the week. Thanks for the comment, I really appreciate it :) J

      @SimplySimos Před 5 lety +1

      @@TheBikePilot Yours video certainly did bring it across as arduous and even though there was a group of you you still need to keep your wits about yourself including your map reading. The vid is a refreshing change to the other mtb related vids on CZcams.... ride to the top of hill then down... ride to the top then down 🙄 your vid is a genuine epic mtb ride keep up the good work 👍

    • @TheBikePilot
      @TheBikePilot  Před 5 lety

      Thanks mate. It's so hard to make good content for CZcams mountain biking and I've been guilty of doing what you say but it is a little lazy and believe me asking the other guys to stop and VLOG means you do need them onside, and when I got the drone out they had to stop riding or I had to interrupt their ride for 15 minutes but they were all super cool about it but I was mindful of not interferring too much...! Glad you enjoyed the vid. More to come and we are going to Megavalanche next wee so loads more content to come..

    Hiya, I'd love to do this. Which tour company did you use and did they plan the route? Sorry if you've already answered this below, had a quick scan through!

    • @TheBikePilot
      @TheBikePilot  Před 4 lety

      No problem Miranda! We used a company called c2c Packhorse in Kirkby Stephen. I didn’t reference them as we weren’t super impressed with them. First day your on your own having to carry your overnight kit. The bike storage area wasn’t really adequate. On other days they lost a couple of bits of our kit and ‘told us off’ twice about how our kit was packed up and we felt it was the tail wagging the dog. I think they are great for walkers but for Mountain Biking or bike tours they weren’t superb..Hope this helps..

    • @TheBikePilot
      @TheBikePilot  Před 5 lety +1

      Day 1 was a relatively short day in terms of climbing and mileage. I was left with 3 bars and used mostly Eco and Trail. My Eco on Day 1 was at 35/50 and Trail 60/60. It’s a 700wh Battery on each bike. Day 2 used a bit more and I dialled back the settings. I used mostly Eco on every day so it never really felt like a true ‘eBike’ Ride. The other boys did this 2 years ago and at the end of the trip said it was just as tough physically but you pedalled more climbs whereas you would have pushed up more on a pedal bike 😁
