Wish the Thousand Sons box swapped 1 squad of marines for 5 terminators, I don't want to buy that combat patrol lol... I wonder if they'll do IG and Votann boxes... maybe too recent? They won't put new stuff in them, so probably Scions, Ogyrn etc for IG....?
The Ork one probably gets such a high rating because it's a good building block for anything ork'y. Fine in basic Arks of Omen armies, fine in combat patrols, fine in boarding actions. And they can be tooled-up a bit, or be used in over-all strategies in Arks. It's nice where your core melee infantry and elite tactical "meta" choices are in one box. The hero character is beside the point, but nice to have, to make it feel "special" (I reckon every ork player would have rathered something else, but Snikrot ain't "bad", and it does theme the box well on boarding patrols. He's probably "not-overpowered" on boarding actions, but wow, maybe he is. Not a bad 95pts anyway). The snagga boyz and kommandos are *great* though, whether you're just starting out, or want to bulk up an already established army. And most orky owners always think "I wonder if I can make Flash Gitz work?" at some point, so now you've got just enough of them to kitbash another 5-10 of them out from the box to see if you can, and they'd easily be tournament legal squads (look, a couple of them aren't kitbashes, so it's obvious what they are 😋). But 3+hit, S6 -2AP 2Dam shooting is never *bad*, at d3 shots per model, even with Heavy and only 24" range. It's not the heavy support shooting you want, but it's averagely ok'ish heavy stuff, sort-of. Simple and easy, so you can focus on what will really work, in any case. (And they work in boarding patrols, so that's nice too. Kind-of like mini-Nobz, in a way. And the odd burna or bomb or klaw makes the kommandos feel great as well). It's not like you can't "feel the Orkyness" on what you could fight a basic Boarding Patrol mission like, but they're good for an army too. The box works great in Goffs, Deathskulls or maybe Bloodaxes too (and maybe Freebooterz, Badmoons, Evil Sunz or Snakebites, depending on shootyness or movement or enemy weapons, alongside a few additions to it. Especially in combat or boarding patrols, but still army++ regardless) so you've got plenty of army play variations with them as well. It's generically orky and good, which is what most boxed sets should be like. There's no truly bad models in it, and you'll always get use out of them if you want to, so there's no true waste. Four'ish out of five stars is fair, assuming they're the full model kits (you get plenty of gubbins in kommandos for modelling purposes). You could buy 2 boarding patrol boxes, convert one Snikrot to a warlord, and buy 1-2 Trukks or Killrigs (or kitbash them out of sprue pieces, cardboard from folders, builder's putty and kid's toys), and have the core of a perfectly viable tournament-ready Ork army, which is the mark of a good boxed set as well. A bit of good melee, a bit of good tactical, and a bit of ok'ish shooting, all in one box (and they're Orks, so the shooting isn't their normal MO). A perfectly reasonable start to an otherwise very expensive addiction.
I'm DEF grabbing the Tau one. Crisis suits, breachers, and a new Farsight is perfect for someone building Farsight Enclaves like I am. One box to get one troop, a HQ, and an elite also makes this quite good as just a combat patrol for cheaper than the actual combat patrols, and funny enough same number of models between the 2.
I love the Farsight box and would be tempted to pick it up for some small games at my FLGS. It will also be interesting to see how the World Eaters box stands up to this list.
I’m still trying to wrap my head around the chaos marines getting f***ing Abaddon in their box! Like imagine your an imperial guardsmen or hell even just a regular space marine and the first thing you see invading your ship is Abaddon.
I can't wait for the tau set, I'm buying at least 3. I've been needing more crisis suits and breachers and I can paint 5 different farsights in 5 different ways! Yippie!
I think they should have versatility with some models especially characters. I think with a few heads and gear options, you could have 3*3 or 4*4 possible models for 2-3 the material needed. Imo named characters should be examples of what you could make with clear consistent rules and point cost, just a bit of flavor. Similarly with cultists you could do great things as regular humans, a few (heretek) upgrades and improvised weapons or mutations. With add-ons you need less material and you can multipurpose the base humans as concripts or renegades to be used and modded by genestealer cults, chaos cults and possible a renegade or loyalist faction. For spacemarines having core models makes life easy too: Neophytes in light power armor, regular marines, gravis marines and terminators (without primaris distinction). Perhaps make terminator just a artificer version of gravis, or rather gravis the mass produced version of terminator. Then make veteran upgrades to regular and gravis, jumppack versions and different torsos and poses to really customise them. Alter the rules so sarges are basically veterans added to a group of 4 and one other veteran specialists can be part of a unit of 10 (so 8 regulars). So each unit has some customisation, and you incorporate silly smash captains back into units. Maybe Deathwatch, Grey Knights and Custodes could have some upgrade parts sold separately to save material? Same for Space Wolves, Blood Angels and perhaps Iron Hand to give them a different look without needing a full range of models. This all to prepare for the moment when GW will finally embrace 3D printing, making money of licensing this to clubs and individuals who pay a little to GW (for art and rules).
As an ork player who has a fairly big collection this box is amazing, the kommandos are the new models released with kill team which I’ve not yet got, a band new sculpt (well of a old model) flash gitz terrible in game but look amazing, and beast snagged boyz which are good in game and I only have 10 from the previous box set so glad to see a box without 20 boyz, or 5 nobz or even another dam death dread I swear that is in every box set 100% will buy
As a new Ork player here I'm going to have to go with Orks. I'm happy to get some Kommandos and Snaggas for a discount, and Snikrot looks cool too. I was originally interested in getting theTyranid one for my bug army, but the more I thought about it the less I wanted it (even though I need more Warriors.)
I might grab the Space Marines one. I need more Heavy Intercessors for my Crimson Fists and I could always turn the Assault Intercessors into Death Company for my Blood Angels.
I wish GW wouldn't put characters in their sets like these. I just recently got Castellan Crowe. I'd be interested in the box if it came with a brother captain with a different loadout than the normal one.
Out of all the boxes probably the only one I’m considering picking up is the Orks, but I could just wait to pick up the units I want at discount when sold off.
i want the death guard box so damn badly as it’s not horribly priced and actually has units unlike the combat patrol where it has enough poxwalkers to take terra itself
Im just starting tyranids and i feel like the boarding patrol box is pretty good if youre just starting to collect but otherwise it would be lack luster.
It's the same for me. I have the combat patrol and boarding patrol and think they are good for a start. The only overlap are the warriors, which really dont hurt to have. Also getting a psy and hq unit in the broodlord is very useful and the further warriors allow to field tyranid primes and full units of tyranid warriors, which isnt possible with the combat patrol.
Discounted Tyranid Warriors is really nice, I want big blocks of Warriors but the cost is a problem, and I can use the Broodlord and more stealers. Not a great box for most, I guess, but it worked for me.
@@cptkrank6802 I’m lucky that I have an FLGS that has a permanent 15% off Warhammer stuff so that box for me was only $108 I think after tax? So it was a fairly good deal then.
@@cgpoly3419 that’s exactly what I bought too, I’m really considering a second combat patrol in the future once I get my gaunts done. I went to eBay and got some cheaper sprues to get two full 30 model units and once I finish those I’ll get a second.
I know this comment is 2 weeks old but it's the same price for the combat patrol where you get the same amount of flesh hounds, 20 bloodletters instead of 10, 3 bloodcrushers and 1 bloodmaster. You're only really missing out on karanak.
After the release of 10th edition, this ranking might change a lot. For example the tyranid box: genestealers will be very strong and if the warriors get a descent profile too, the box will have a very good value- even if gs get a new model in the coming years.
Main issue with Crisis suits in Tau set is just, well, how overcosted they are. Seems like everyone gets free wargear and we got overcosted chassis with pay-to-grab wargear.
I'd rank the Chaos deamons allot higher. I bought it, built em up and sweaped the table of necrons. Karanaks ability to chose a character unit to kill came in handy
Got lucky and found the necron box today after calling 7 shops, including 2 warhammer stores. I really dont understand GW's tactic for making a limited releases of these. Unless they are going to release a second wave I dont see why these couldnt just stick around. A solid amount of them pair well with their combat patrol which would only increase GW sales. Maybe they have plans for 10th
I love the Tyranids one. Maybe it’s because I’m an old school Tyranids player but I always want more genestealers and Warriors at a discount since they’ve skyrocketed in price.
probably wont make one, and even if they did it would be under pointed or just plain a rehash of the other boxes, seems like they really dont want to give guard a cheap way to get models that arent simple infantry
The Admech one is close to the same setup as the combat patrol. They should have changed the range up with some more elite options since its boarding actions.
But now you gotta get into a punch up to get hold of any of these boxes above bottom tier. Definitely get an 'electronics on Black Friday' feel about the whole thing.
I hope that the general enthusiasm for the boarding patrols (i.e. some sell out fast) convinces GW that new and existing players would prefer the slightly lower price point here rather than the costly Combat Patrols; and that if they want to go higher it should be for Christmas battleforces. I won't hold my breath though!
I wish Craftworlds got a new phoenix lord or something with their boarding action box. 2 sets of Corsairs and banshees is pretty good. I already have Jain though...
They should have had the lord of contignation in the DG box, but I understand the sprue issues. I feel that is one of the most sought after models right now.
Boarding Patrol Death Guard is pretty awesome. I wish it had been around two years go when I was buying it all separately. I *could* get it now, but it would be largely symbolic. I doubt I need 12 Deathshroud! Or do I? 🤔
I got the battle sisters battleforce and combat patrol, so the boarding actions will be nice to get me a full 2000 point army. Probably not optimal by any means, but I'll have one.
I got the Chaos Daemons one not being a good bundle. But I'm currently painting up a Combat Patrol Box set. And I just pre ordered the Combat Patrol mainly for Karanak. I think of it like a Renforcment box with a Legendary Character. True It's a hound focused box, but I heard currently they are really good. Besides. I'm going to be getting a Future Combat Patrol Daemons so I can have a good solid force, then think of getting the larger stuff like A Bood Thirster
as an admech player id put the admech one right at the bottom tbh its REALLY bad, kataphrons and skitiari have been in EVERY box together, and you actually only really want one of them in an army not both in addition to that, if you are an admech player YOU ALREADY HAVE ENOUGH SKITARII AND KATAPHRONS AS THEY HAVE BEEN IN EVERY BOX admech REALLY need a vehicle box, like, something that isnt just the 2 troops choice every single time you saw it with the christmas box, the admech one is still on the webstore cos they didnt sell because no one wants more kataphrons and skitarii but also as someone who DOESNT collect eldar, i REALLY want that craftworld box, its basically all the eldar units i like outside of the wraith guard, so im probably going to use it as an entry to an small eldar army, i likely wont go over 1k pts ever, just use it as a little jain zhar force, but i do want it
Gonna go against the grain and say I kind of like the Marines box. It's a nice start for a successor, and if you go to a retailer that gets the discounts you can pick one up for like $90
At the very least, the Thousand Sons Boarding Patrol doesn't have any Tzaangors, so it is a discount box that has a bunch of rubrics which is why I'm picking it up. (I already had Magnus so I didn't get the Christmas box). I already have 20 Tzaangors and yet only 10 rubrics and 5 scarabs. This will balance them out
GW forgot some armies, such as the imperial guard. By the way i don't see how the IG could survive in such mode without tanks, sentinels and cavalry, just by spaming ogryns/bulgryns...
I wonder if the tau one would have gotten so positive a response if it didn't contain a shiny new farsight model. Like if it had shadowsun or old farsight.
Omg if they put 5 wardens, 3 terminators and a blade champion in the custodes box it would be sold out. It literally so easy it builds itself. Just drop a warden and boom five hundred exactly and it can still be built to 750 with character spam
You can tell 40k players are never happy simply based on the reaction to daemons and drukhari. Complaining about more of the same khorne subfaction then turning around and whining that wych cults aren't combat patrol cabals
I started in the hobby in January. I already have everything in the Space Marine box besides the Captain. But I do already have multiple Captains and Lt.'s I can find value in most any spece marine box, I don't even have 2000 points. But this box is a waste. So who is the audience or market for this box?
is it wrong that im upset that there are genestealers in the tyrannid box when their splinter faction has it's own? and seems very similar to the old start collecting tyrannids...
I'm looking to start playing WH40k, some people around me already play kill team and some are starting to build their armies. I'm wondering if boarding patrols are a good product to start kill team and eventually build towards and army or is there another kit you'd recommend for starters?
Kinda annoyed farsight got thrown in with the tau box, sure it's a cool mini but they're just going to use it to justify selling them at a higher price and they're going to sell out rapidly.
Just bought the CSM Boarding Patrol yesterday from a vendor online for $136 CAD + tax. Abaddon was my main point of interest. It seems that this box is sold out almost everywhere, why is that the case? Was it not just released not that long ago?
GW: "After 30 boxes of space marines, we are pretty sure a lot of players out there still need more Assault Intercessors!!!"
The fact that space marines have more choices for assault intercesors rather than harlequin total models , makes me feel nice 😊

As a new Tau player, this is great to hear
I love the Farsight box and would be tempted to pick it up for some small games at my FLGS. It will also be interesting to see how the World Eaters box stands up to this list.
I’m still trying to wrap my head around the chaos marines getting f***ing Abaddon in their box! Like imagine your an imperial guardsmen or hell even just a regular space marine and the first thing you see invading your ship is Abaddon.
The boarding patrol and a box of Blight Termis are the start of my new DeathGuard army
For spacemarines having core models makes life easy too:
Neophytes in light power armor, regular marines, gravis marines and terminators (without primaris distinction).
I kinda want to rate Thousand Sons box higher just because there’s no damn Zangors 😆
The problem with Snikrot is that he is not "warboss" so he can not call Waaagh
Picked up the Chaos Marines, because why not. Great value and have to start a pile of shame some time.
Both this box & the vanguard patrol for daemons are khorne. GW must really want to push the khrone daemon overstock lol
It is great if you're just starting. Some of us had those models 19 years ago, though.
I liked the daemons one, thought about picking it up for my world eaters
I don't like the daemons box for 40k. But it's is really good for AoS. Almost 500 points in models and if anything gives models to summon.
Do you guys think they will also release a imperial guard boarding patrol, or skip it because of the recent release?
probably wont make one, and even if they did it would be under pointed or just plain a rehash of the other boxes, seems like they really dont want to give guard a cheap way to get models that arent simple infantry
If i didnt have a huge CSM painting backlog i'd definately go for the death guard one
Need some corsairs to crew my raiders in my all corsair force so pretty happy
Boarding Patrol Death Guard is pretty awesome. I wish it had been around two years go when I was buying it all separately. I *could* get it now, but it would be largely symbolic. I doubt I need 12 Deathshroud! Or do I? 🤔
I got the battle sisters battleforce and combat patrol, so the boarding actions will be nice to get me a full 2000 point army. Probably not optimal by any means, but I'll have one.
Man I haven't heard someone else say "Battleforce" since 5th/6th edition. Even though I still call the army box sets Battleforce.
As a new player that space marine box was a banger in terms of value
Wooo farsight!
If the eldar set had guardians instead of the corsairs I would have picked it up. Corsairs are more of a drukhari unit imo
Besides. I'm going to be getting a Future Combat Patrol Daemons so I can have a good solid force, then think of getting the larger stuff like A Bood Thirster
as an admech player id put the admech one right at the bottom tbh
its REALLY bad, kataphrons and skitiari have been in EVERY box together, and you actually only really want one of them in an army not both
in addition to that, if you are an admech player YOU ALREADY HAVE ENOUGH SKITARII AND KATAPHRONS AS THEY HAVE BEEN IN EVERY BOX
admech REALLY need a vehicle box, like, something that isnt just the 2 troops choice every single time
you saw it with the christmas box, the admech one is still on the webstore cos they didnt sell because no one wants more kataphrons and skitarii
but also as someone who DOESNT collect eldar, i REALLY want that craftworld box, its basically all the eldar units i like outside of the wraith guard, so im probably going to use it as an entry to an small eldar army, i likely wont go over 1k pts ever, just use it as a little jain zhar force, but i do want it
I want that GK box to come out already. I wanna start working on my Army
Gonna go against the grain and say I kind of like the Marines box. It's a nice start for a successor, and if you go to a retailer that gets the discounts you can pick one up for like $90
I love how us ork player get the biggest discount almost everytime haha
seems a bit pointless to me to rank them before their price comes out, especially sincd they have a great degree of variance in pricing.
seems a bit pointless to rank them given how quickly they sell out 😕
I’ve got the Chaos SM one from a physical store because online it went out in 5 seconds or so…
Personally quite like the tyranid box for the warriors, maybe something else than genestealers would have been nice
World Eaters would be interresting . But hey, still waiting on that
got the chaos one, been thinking about the DG one but the Lord is making me hesitate as i already got one, also thinking about the Necron one.
This will balance them out
I hope they make an IG one soon, I'd like to see what it includes and if it is worth it to include the minis in my army roster.
Probably karskin
@@Whoknows21356 or new Scions
@@alexhousakos that’d be cool. I was actually wanting to build a scion army but this new Codex kinda botched that so
@@Whoknows21356 well it’s the only logical explanation for their delay of Board Patrol IG. If they give us Scions they need to fix the rules.
Eldar:
Pros: Corsairs
Cons: Corsairs
GW forgot some armies, such as the imperial guard. By the way i don't see how the IG could survive in such mode without tanks, sentinels and cavalry, just by spaming ogryns/bulgryns...
As a combat patrol, the Daemons one sucks….
….HOWEVER! It’s basically a “WE Allies” box set that works amazingly!
I wonder if the tau one would have gotten so positive a response if it didn't contain a shiny new farsight model. Like if it had shadowsun or old farsight.
It wouldn't have. If Eldae got a new phoenix lord model in their box it would have been top 5.
I would’ve preferred something else instead of the Warriors in the Necron box. Flayed ones would’ve been a better inclusion I think
Is it just me, but do the new primaris missile launchers look so stupid that id never field them, even if the stats are good
I started in the hobby in January. I already have everything in the Space Marine box besides the Captain. But I do already have multiple Captains and Lt.'s I can find value in most any spece marine box, I don't even have 2000 points. But this box is a waste. So who is the audience or market for this box?
Why would GW put Abaddon in the Chaos Box but not robute in the Space Marine one? Thats just being shitty to customers again.
Tfw no Imperial/Chaos Knights boarding patrol
Been after the ork kill team but only to convert it all. I don't like the new Snikrot model.
is it wrong that im upset that there are genestealers in the tyrannid box when their splinter faction has it's own? and seems very similar to the old start collecting tyrannids...
Thanks for making this
I’m torn I want the tau, grey knights, craft worlds, csm and orcs
I'm looking to start playing WH40k, some people around me already play kill team and some are starting to build their armies.
I'm wondering if boarding patrols are a good product to start kill team and eventually build towards and army or is there another kit you'd recommend for starters?
🙌 1st class content, as always. Thank you. 🙏
“If you want wych cult…”
That’s the problem. No one does. Its harmonculi or archons.
The ork one is good value, but you can't really play boarding patrol with it. There's no warboss so that locks away the Waaagh!
