    I think, it also makes sense, if you can't have enough pilots to man the large quantity of cheaper fighters and it's pointless to compete with the empire in production and manpower, you should go for the small quantity of more expensive and advanced fighters, rather than medium numbers of mediocre fighters. If you can't beat your enemy in quantity, you should fully commit to beating them in quality.

  • @BalooSJ
    @BalooSJ Před rokem +98

    Another thing: hyperdrives on starfighters were a pretty new and rare thing (that's why Obi-Wan has a hyperdrive docking ring on his one-man ship in Attack of the Clones, and that's not the kind of thing you want to rely on if you're expecting a fight). That allows the Rebels to make hit-and-run attacks without having a carrier ship around to bring them in and out.

    • @johnlasley975
      @johnlasley975 Před rokem +7

      basically all republic navy fighters did not have pre-installed hyper drive. as far as i remember, arc-170 did, y wing did and V-19 with its ring. all others didn't. In retrospective, rebellion adapting y-wing seems like a big w, cause they got quite technologically advanced frontline bombers from the start.

    • @mggaming968
      @mggaming968 Před rokem +3

      i thought the hyper drive rings on the jedi star fighters were specifically bcuz the jedi fighters were close to custom jobs with the focus on providing as much speed and maneuverability as possible for the very few pilots (jedi) who could handle them and under normal circumstances a hyper drive wasn't rly an option.
      with anakin modifying his fighter for so long that he actually managed to fit a hyper drive into his fighter but having to radically change the hull shape as a consequence

    • @calebbarnhouse496
      @calebbarnhouse496 Před rokem

      Not really new tech, the reason jedi starfighters needed them was because they were to small, and they needed more room to travel long range, larger fighters like the ARC had them even in the clone wars, the xwing was a refinement, but nothing they lacked the technology to make, just didn't have the blueprints lined up

    • @DragonHeart53
      @DragonHeart53 Před rokem +10

      My guess, is that going cheap is only a short term benefit, and will cost more in the long run. Being poor makes you value what you do have, so you’re more conscious of long term spending. So buying the expensive one with the expectation that you’re going to keep it for longer, than buying the cheap version that you have to keep replacing.
      For the rebels, it was number of pilots. They had too few to spend them all flying cheap fighters, so they have to make their pilots last as long as possible. That means using more expensive fighters.

    The T-65B was also the best blend of all starfighter characteristics. It had durable shields, a decent speed, and powerful laser cannons combined with the ability to launch proton torpedos, all of which made it competent for both fighting in the air/space and fulfilling a ground-attack role.
    It also excelled at the soft factors, which is something no one ever talks about. Like he mentioned, it was relatively easy for bush pilots to pick up. It was built to a high quality, and it was comfortable for most pilots, not just humans.

    Speaking from a legends perspective, there are many reasons why the rebels favoured the x-wing. They were easy to maintain and repair due to a modular design philosophy. They were highly maneuverable which allowed pilots to execute precise movements when dogfighting both in and out of atmosphere. They had a shield generator increasing pilot survivability. As mentioned, they had a hyperdrive. And they were very versatile in their offensive capabilities. Dual proton torpedo launchers allowed them to add bombing runs into their mission profile so they were also able to be utilized to hit ground targets and support infantry. They were just all around better fighters than the empire's. (Yes, I'm aware that certain models of tie fighters out perform the x-wing in certain regards, but the key is that the x-wing does many things very well and TIEs only done or two things better depending on the class)

    This is a good explanation for why muzzle loading single shot muskets were used during the Civil War when far more modern breech loading and even repeating firearms were available. • @celticlad3251
      @celticlad3251 Před rokem

      That is incorrect ... Muzzleloaders were way faster to mass produce over breech-loading and repeating rifles at that time ... Also Military top brass though the regular soldier would go through their ammo too quickly .
      Also breechloaders if not loaded correctly can cause gun powder to collect around the breech and then blow up in your face unexpectedly. They were mostly used for specialized units like sharpshooters
      Same with the early repeating rifles ...hard to mass produce and had paper cartridges that broke open and exploded when the gun was fired ... That changed with Henrys and Spencer rifles that used brass cartridges.
      Both breech and repeating rifles had issues with getting enough ammo to the units that used them ....where as the standardization of the muzzleloader cailber it was much easier to do so

    If my legends knowledge serves me right it was a combo of things; the rebels didn't have as large of a Starfighter fleet so they needed craft that could do multi role like the x and y wing. They didn't have as many carriers as the empire so they had to have Starfighters with hyperdrives, they could never produce the quantity to keep up with the empire in fighters or pilots so they had to make quality ones with higher pilot survivability.

    So when the fighter was being developed by Incom, the Empre began cracking down on independant starfighter manufacturers. The X-Wing was so effective in its test runs, that the Empire decided to jail the entire design team. Finding this out, the Rebellion helped the design team escape with their prototypes and plans. Thus the REAL reason the Rebellion uses X-Wings is because it is the one fighter they make themselves.

  • @CoollikeJ
    @CoollikeJ Před rokem

    So you are telling me, the empire just attaches lasers to some tiny pieces of metal with crappy engines and low dilurability? Keep in mind this is a Galactic Empire, with a massive ammount of resources and money, and that's the best they can do? Meanwhile a Rebellion, not an empire, just a group centered around fighting against them have better ships, a hyperdrive, better maneuverability, better pilots, and more lasers. The only empire fighters I can respect is the Tie Intercepter and Tie Defender and Tie Bomber. The Rebellion has those but better. The Empire was in no position for a war if thats the best they can do.
