Restoring a Piece of History - Random Hands

  • At last! here is a restoration video after a long time just on public demand.
This is the most rusty cleaver I have ever restored, this antique butcher cleaver was send to us from Netherland by one of our supporter Stuw, his instagram @Stuwhoutje. He found it with the help of a metal detector. I did not make any big changes to this cleaver. I did not smoothen those big holes from corrosion and at the end I like that antique look of the cleaver.
    Restoration:
First of all I removed thick layers of rust with gentle hammering then I choosen Electrolysis for removing deeper rust because it is a safer and non damaging way of removing rust. After many hours of electrolysis I simply do a sandblasting for a good looking surface.
Now time to Reshape it using belt sander and files While filing the surface I felt that it is still good tempered and ready to make the bevel I used a wet surface grinder to not destroy its temper. And after sanding now we have a razor sharp blade.
Next I tried a new way to give it a royal look and securing it from further corrosion.
Brass brushing: Simply we heat up cleaver with a gas torch and brush it with a brass wire brush using an angle grinder.
Now time to make its handle. I used brass, resin and wood to make its handle. After blackening and smoothening the wood and a gloss finish it looked good.
For its protection I made a leather cover. I used a wax hardened black leather
to make this fancy cover. And now it is ready to beautify the walls.

Observation: I was curious about the date of this artifact until they said the spine is still hard. If it were medieval, the edge would likely be hardened carbon steel with the rest of the mass of the blade being made of a less valuable form of steel or iron. So it's probably not as old as it looks, but was instead not well preserved. Honestly, anything more than 50 years old in good shape is a rarity.

Nice job. It would’ve been nice to be able to smooth out the whole thing but in the end sometimes you just can’t. So the fact that you got the blade sharp again and that you got rid of all the rest and made it good again that’s pretty impressive even if it looks a little bit spotty.

Many of the tools are very dangerous to use with gloves, like a grinding wheel. If the glove catches then it pulls your hand or arm in. Without a glove, you get scrape or a tiny burn from a spark instead of losing your hand.
