- It was 1979 and disco was in its prime. Larry Himmel and photojournalist Tom Zizzi set out to explore San Diego nightlife. Five nights and five of the hottest clubs in town-that was their assignment! Mission Valley was the place to see and be seen back then so four of the clubs were there. One in Point Loma. If the disco wasn’t your scene, there were other options. When these stories aired in November 1979 on News 8, they helped people decide what club was right for them. So yes it looked like they were having fun-and no doubt they were-but they were giving our viewers valuable information so they wouldn’t have to waste their time. So let’s teleport back to ’79 - you might want to put your dancing shoes on and join the party.
Maxi's
Crystal T's
Flanagan's
D.O. Mills
Rasputin's
This is what everyone worked for; Friday & Saturday nights, partying & letting loose, just leaving work & business at home! Great times….
We need more news people like Larry there today. Everyone on the news is all angry and outraged 24-7 and Larry is all about enjoying life
BRING BACK DISCO!!!
I was born in '79. This is DEFINITELY my parents' generation!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Me too. By the time I started enjoying music disco was in the ground
Larry was simply the best. I miss him, but not disco. Jaberwocky above the Town n Country, Rasputins in Pt. Loma, Salsa night at the Cortez, San Diego nightlife was the place to be. Thanks for the memories. 🙏💪🌍🌎🌏❤️🇺🇸🖖
At the same time this was going on I was into New Wave in New York. I loved both genres of music
Notice how trim these cats looked. I was born in '76 and all of my Dad's photos from back then looked exactly like this. And he lived in Trinidad 😂
Dancing was a great workout every weekend! No gym was ever needed then.
Nice video! Wish I could've experienced that time.
No you don't
@@johnjaco5544what do you have against dollar drink night, huh?!?!
It was a lot of fun!
@@johnjaco5544why not
It was a pathetic time.@@mutilatedhatred4868
Flanagan's was my spot, awe good memories
Awesome time capsule❤
1967-1969 was the best years for me 🎉
How do you say you tell us is that your old.
Top of the Arc at the Travelodge on Harbor Island was awesome! I Worked at the hotel as a bellman. I would sneak up to the club after work underage. Best view of San Diego as you were dancing. Aw, memories. Also the hotel had a room with mirrors and a round bed. Room 909. 5 feet from the club. Does anybody else remember?
Everyone was so lean!!
lol! Wonder Why?
Coke
Dancing ... 💃🪩🕺 - lots of dancing and NO "Super Size" junk food too!!! 😉
that good old day I miss that day
Compared to today, they were very thin..😂😂

Rumor has it that Larry is still waiting for someone to "High 5" him 44 years later
Love seeing all the people together just having a nice time. 🪩
East county, although nearly a decade later for me: Park Place...
Navajo Inn,
Both were hard rockin' night clubs!
Neutral Grounds, older freind liked that place, All I can remember about Mission Valley..Confetti's
Oh yeah, The Main Attraction access from Kaiser hospital...a so called gentleman's club, ha ha!
Me: ah the DJ is on his phone. Also me: uh o wait! This is 1979!!! Smart phones not invented yet lol
Mission Valley and Point Loma??? Not Downtown or PB how things have changed
Back then the Gaslamp was a dump but now it's the top premier nightlife district of SD
Wow Larry was a hottie!!!
San diego was so much better back in those days. Especially mission valley. This city is so dirty and ghetto now. So so so sad. 😔
I agree. Even the difference in 10 years is really eye opening. Some parts of SD resembles a 3rd world country with illegal aliens everywhere.
🔥🔥🔥Anyone know was that last Disco song at the end?
Shalamar - Uptown Music Festival
@@fozzir DAMN!!! Thanks!
I'll pray for you
Everyone in those clubs was Coked out of there mind 👃🏻 ❄️🏂 😩
Without a doubt !!!
Dollar Drink Nite 😭
Tic toc has entered the chat
📢 ~ Note to this younger generation - at 7:33 minutes in ... THIS is how people used to meet IRL - not on ridiculous dating APPs 💋
Someone die and others are to old with diseases, all we be there step by step
My Rich Uncles, The Alamo, Foggys Notion are all gone... Back in the day we partied our asses off.
Wow, the women were so beautiful!
Ron Burgundy was right
And some good old Mexican cocaine 😊
😂😂
Yes from Tijuanas Cuban 🇨🇺 Falcon.
It's good for you, just makes you want to dance. Nothing wrong with that.
The Mexican cartels weren't as powerful then it was the Colombians
@@elpaiser428 ha, learned about him on Narcos
Everybody was so skinny back in those days because they actually left their homes and werent sitting around on the phone laptops tablets and desktops. They went to dance clubs roller rinks arcades movie theaters amusement parks miniature golfing bowling rode bikes etc...People are so lazy and obese nowdays.
There are also more cars now, no one wants to get run over, smell exhaust fumes or be bombarded by noise.
People ate healthier then too, that's why so many people also have diabetes now. But yeah the world was a better place in that regard because you had to go out and be an active participant in the world rather than now doing so much behind screens
Cocaine…. It’s was the cocaine.
@@HANNIBALBARCA247was gonna say that... seemed like larry wanted to mention it. Talking about cash changing hands, showing the long cocaine pinky nails. It didnt have the stigma back then not till crack came along.
Little cocaine doesn't hurt
Cool how their dancing and not on their phones
They wouldn't have been able to since they didn't have them. Would be kinda hard.
@@stephaniejames4940 point is their having acfual fun 💀
Exactly 💯‼️ 💃🪩🕺
Ledbetter's
That's why past generations were so happy we danced for entertainment...now kids just stay on their phones no interaction
07:30 AIDS hasent been discovered yet😢
Good carefree times
Foggy notion.mom's,the cave,maynards,sting ray,el robo,sneaky petes,to many to remember them all.
@johnjaco5544 ~ Also, Lehr's Greenhouse + spots in North County 💃🪩🕺‼️😘
I can almost smell the cocaine !
@bryanburnap4537 ~ Maybe taste 👅 but definitely NOT smell 👃 - 😂 - 💃🪩🕺‼️😘
us late baby boomers missed the disco area. glad we did
Whatever ... You weren't there - so you don't know 😂 ~ 💃🪩🕺‼️
💃🪩🕺‼️ 😘
Beyond funny, All these people will Be embarrassed beyond belief when they see this.
These people probably died long ago or they're in retirement homes and beyond caring
The same can be said about any era
@@BigBadJerryRogers only 45 years ago
Nah I don’t think they’d be embarrassed…this was probably the best times of their life…They most likely wish life was still like this
If you were still listening to disco in '79 you were a big time lame-o.
Not true at all, the disco influence transcended into the early 80s, then came back in retro appreciation in the 90s.
@@BigBadJerryRogers Yes true, l was alive then. These people were "old" and lame.
@@DiogenesOfCa you must only be into a limited type of music then or you just don't know music history. I appreciate all types of music to varying degrees
@@BigBadJerryRogers I listen to everything from Fela to Death Metal.
I am stating that in '79 Disco was dead.
"Hip" people were already listening to punk and New Wave.
@@DiogenesOfCathis piece was about night clubs not music. "Cool" people were not going to punk clubs, and in the end, punk rock sucked.
Ill agree disco music was on its last legs in 79, however some still liked it and it evolved.
Im not so sure that not following trends or fads just because everyone else is makes you lame.
