Women sound like Elk, Snow Leopards, Bobcats or Vixen.
[when I say vixen, i'm not referring to the vixen's scream, I'm referring to Vixen (female foxes) and the noises they make.]
All women are one of those or a mix of them... this is why a common joke among hunters is "Lmao, that thing sounds like my wife." and the guys lmao at it... because if you listen closely, you can hear a woman.

Pretty cool footage and vocalizations. You have a lot of really helpful info available to us that is different from all the rest. I can appreciate the more "theory based" side to calling by knowing what you are saying to the elk and how and when to say it. Rather than just perfecting the sound and blasting away, one can choose to speak their lingo the right way and surely be more successful in calling in elk. Thanks for the insight and all your content Chris.

Filmed in July... first guess, without any additional information... lost calf.
    Her nose is working hard.
Sounds like this is near a roadway; can see shadows of what appear to be vehicles.
This could be a situation in which her calf was hit by a vehicle.
Lost calf or she lost the herd.

I had a feeling that this much calling wouldn't draw anything in or bring a response. Was there anything we couldn't hear? We're there other elk in the area? This makes me feel a little better when they don't respond. My calls sound pretty damn close to this too

Listen to the Podcast for the full scenario, or jump onto the Elk Module at www.RoeHuntingResources.com to hear NUMEROUS discussions on this vocalization, and why it has nothing to do with Estrous. ...this was filmed in July, btw.

I lived where a herd did (about 100 head) and watched them while I used calls. Bulls did not care to investigate bugles and seemed perhaps they were risking their harem and kept their distance. A simple cow 'mew' brought cows in the where they passed by me on both sides at one time, then maybe last to appear was as usual the bull. The bulls are the same as the big mule deer bucks...they wait for everyone else to go ahead, cows, rag horn bulls and spikes before they came out into the open. Bulls are super wary and most footage I have watched I must assume was taken in national parks or private land refuges. Guys with money pay thousands to hunt private land with a guide. Half the licenses here in Colorado are drawn by out of state hunters. Total BS for us residents who cannot hunt every year because most elk tags and all deer tags are limited to drawings... unless you go 'late season' - after dark. You can pick up road kill though which is about 7000 mule deer a year. If a semi hit it - forget it. As for hit by a sedan they used to say "steak on the grill".
Opening morning near Gunnison the Texans as we called them woke up a herd and the rifle fire lasted about two minutes. Imagine in your mind two minutes of that! I didn't even bother to hike up as it is steep country and I didn't know what trail to drive on so went on about my lame hunt!

i use this call when I'm at home on the porch at 10 pm enjoying beers. It calls the cows in first and they start mewing . When there's enough of a racket around my land the big bulls start coming in . I only have to play this for maybe a hour .

Yes, cow elk do bugle. But it is now as loud or as blown out as a bull it's typically a shorter lower volume. I have also watched and heard calf chirping and they sounded like a bird.
